theyre essentially like rolex, guccie, apple and tesla except with no added quality, ie, people buy them for the clout.
That said, i honestly dont know how fender could improve their guitars to the point of their price points. Even if EVERY guitar came out of that factory perfect feeling and playing, theres only SO polished a handmade guitar can BE really. They cant imbue it with magic...as long as quality of other companies grow, Fender wont be able to really combat it🤷
To answer the question posed in the description, yes Fender should be very worried about the quality of the Chinese copies. Just today I received my Chinese Strat copy. 2 piece mahogany body, maple neck, nitro finish. I was expecting it to be like my Chibson SG, a great instrument but with crappy tuners, junk pickups, puny pots etc. But I was wrong. I paid $157 for it and it is absolutely amazing right out of the foam. Without question better than any Squier in existence. And definitely approaching an American Fender product. AS IS!! I bought authentic Fender tuners, tremolo, etc, and I think I may return them. The tuners are surprisingly good. The pickups are shockingly good. The neck is perfect, its set up perfect and it plays like a dream. FYI I've built many Partscasters and never got a call from Fender. So the fact that you did tells me this is definitely striking a nerve with them, as it should. And for me, perhaps the biggest question it raises is why can't FENDER make a guitar this good IN CHINA? Because they make guitars in China too. And they charge more for them and they are nowhere near as good as what I just got. So they are the ones with some soul searching to do, not you. Keep it up brother, I'm loving these vids!

This is just companies trying to squeeze every cent from consumers. Companies like fender and gibson have rested on their laurels and got sloppy thinking oversees wouldnt catch up in craftsmanship. Keep up the videos!

After seeing Fulton's video on the Frankie, I decided to look up and list down parts and see how much I can get away with with decent budget parts and I got it to around $550 which includes painting from my local custom shop in my country. It's insane how Fender is selling it for $2k.
Player for 45 years. Always was leery of Fender for its pricing and lack of creativity - always putting out the same stuff and trying so hard to convince me their sound was essential. Thanks for this splash of cold water, Fender. I almost bought into your marketing and convinced myself I NEEDED a Telecaster.
I purchased a chibson Adam Jones antique silverburst LP from Ali express. $300. The paint, neck, headstock, fretwork was remarkable. I replaced the pickups with Alnicos, and the rest of the electronics, added a gibson custom truss cover and brass gibson custom switch cover on the back and grover locking tuners. All together it cost me $750 including the guitar. Ive played an orginal and mine is better for 1/3 the price. I love it and cant put it down. Its a rock beast. If I could post picks here i would. You would be impressed.
Kind of ironic that in the process of attempting to take down videos that "may harm their brand" they ultimately end up doing more damage to their brand by making it very clear that they're not interested in fair competition or constructive criticism. They've come a LONG way from the days of Leo Fender taking prototype guitars to clubs to have musicians give feedback on the instrument.
I made my own Frankenstrat in 2008. Most fun project I ever built. Not to mention the satisfaction you get when you're done building it and hearing it for the first time when you plug it in. Priceless!!
Fender. I bought a Fender Custom Strat, in the 1980's, built to my specks for $ 1,600.00. It was a very nice guitar. I recently bought a Chibson Custom Strat for about $350.00 that is every bit as good as the Fender Strat. All I did to the Chibson was change the nut, and the trem block, and I genuinely love playing it.
I took a punt and ordered one.
I already have a "not quite Chibson", a non-reverse Firebird style guitar with no name on the headstock, two P90's, a wrap around tailpiece and the controls all in slightly the wrong place so they look like they are huddling together, scared of the vast expanse of bright yellow body they find themselves marooned on.
I also built a Peavey Axis Sport copy from an AliExpress kit, added some fake Grovers, a cheap Floyd and a "Tone" knob.
Anyhow, fingers crossed that lightening strikes twice.
Now I have to add more Van Halen tunes to the band's playlist.

Eddie has had the copyright for the stripe design since 2001 but since you aren't making and selling the guitars I don't quite understand the issue.

Great job! Your video is right on so many points. If I won the lottery I would try to build a EVH guitar before I would give Fender $2000 for a copy. These companies are getting out of hand with this crap. $40,000 for a Gibson greeny? Your not Peter Green, your not EVH. Music is fun, play what you feel and be yourself. If you are a rich guy who wants to hang guitars on your wall knock yourself out. Companies need to stop telling people what to do. Sorry for the rant

You can say “America! I do what I want!” all day long, but to pretend that’s not a counterfeit EVH Frankenstein is just silly. I own an EVH Frankenstein and I’d probably confuse the two if they were hanging on a wall across the room.
Of course they don’t use the same components as a Fender/EVH! They’re counterfeit!
I’m no lawyer, but as I understand it, trademark holders must aggressively defend their trademarks or risk losing them. And to pretend that guitar doesn’t infringe on Fender/EVH’s trademark isn’t being intellectually honest. It’s just not.
It can feel good to tie the 1st amendment into this, but it has nothing to do with it. It’s just more rah rah America nonsense.
But you’re buying a counterfeit instrument. Period.
Just own it.
Alllll of that said, I don’t have any personal issue with anyone buying guitars off Aliexpress. I’m interested in doing it myself but haven’t found anything that has made me pull the trigger yet.
I may even pick up a Franky like that one. Because I’m an idiot with more gear than sense.
But here’s the difference… if and when I do I won’t pretend I’m in the right because of some false sense of entitlement to “do whatever I want.”
I’ll know I bought a counterfeit instrument that violates a legal and defendable trademark.

I definitely appreciate you opinion brother. The counterfeit line can be a very fine one as far as legal definition. That's why and how they have been coming over by the 100's every day for years. UCC trade and legalese terms they throw around with no validity. Its such a smoke show.. I just like to show what's out there . You should go and watch Guitar Max's most recent video. He asked a lawyer about the legal consequences of owning this type of guitar in the US (his case was related to a Burny guitar though)

I ordered 2 Frankie’s from your original unboxing video from the seller you got yours from. Unfortunately only one came and I have had only one tracking number the entire time so I assumed two guitars were going to be packed into one package. I have to sort that out. The neck seems to have a small crack that looks like it was fixed. Not sure if it part of the relicing process or what. The Floyd bridge is majorly crooked and not sure if it’s a decent one or not. Can I send you some photos for you to take a look and see how it compares to yours? I’m not a luthier or very good with guitar setups so I really am not sure. It definitely needs some work to play but it sure looks authentic. I got a 1941 quarter as well.
Oscar Wilde originally said the imitation is the greatest for of flattery. I own expensive Gibson and Fender guitars but honestly my cheap $3-500 guitars get most of the action. The big companies have forgotten entirely what good finishing work is. I appreciate your opinions on this topic and you could not be more correct!

To each his own. I have close to 25 guitars. I know I am in a minority but I don't buy Gibson or Fender body shaped guitar that aren't made by those brands or officially licensed by them. I have always respected Fender & Gibson for creating the best guitar designs. I know it's legal for other companies to use those designs and they should have copyrighted them back in the 50's. As for Chinese counterfeiting, when they put Gibson or Fender on a headstock along with fake serial numbers that is the definition of counterfeiting. I may be in a minority here but to me the guitar in the video is a counterfeit guitar. Eddie Van Halen has put out a line of guitars since 1991. He made a deal with Fender over the EVH brand. Building your own partscaster is completely different then manufacturing them and selling worldwide. Fender isn't the only only one being stolen from, the estate of Eddie Van Halen is also. Just my opinion which I am entitled to. If these companies want to sell copies of guitars they should should at the very least put their name on them.

Great Video Review. Is it complicated to install the : EVH D-Tuna System - Chrome? Does the Guitar actually have a Floyd Rose. A Floyd Rose-style tremolo?

It appears to be a old FR II. It works well but they a very cheap Floyd. I installed a D-tuna on it. Easy job. just make sure that your string are stretched out first.
I know why they are scared… I watched your review video and immediately ordered one from the Chibson guy you referred to… Now if I did not do that I would have had to buy one of their multi thousand dollar guitars… American companies SHOULD be terrified of overseas guitars… They made BILLIONS off of us for decades and that seems like it is going to end and that terrifies them!

Having worked in "the biz" for many years, the one thing Fender can get actually mad about is the headstock shape...
Not at me they can't. I didn't build it. Lol. Take that up with the manufacturer.

I can understand why an American manufactured product costs more than an asian manufactured product and that Fender invests many millions in advertising, research and developement. They probably also paid EVH a lot of money to allow them to market his piece of art however Fender also owns a reputable production facility in Asia called Squier who also produce good guitars. There will always be fans and collectors who 'need' a brand name but there's nothing stopping Fender producing a budget version via Squier of this iconic guitar. At the end of the day they're all copies unless it's the original. It's just a question of cornering your segment of the market. If Squier produced an EVH copy for 350€ ( yes I'm a European) most people would buy it because it's much easier and less risky to buy a brand product from a reputable source than buying direct from Ali-Express. How do I know? I've done it and it wasn't always a success. Granted I always got the product, eventually, or I got a refund, eventually but that was only buying parts. I've never bought a guitar that way and I never would. I'm not knocking it, it's just not for me.
The EVH pot its label/sticker on the packaging reads made in China.😂😂😂

⚡⚡i am playing guitar for 40+ years now and that is the only thing i am really good at ! i have never owned a fender or gibson guitar, not because i could not afford it, but i did not want to afford it ! and all of my instruments are very good to excellent quality and play up to my (high!) standards. ever so often i have tried a fender or gibson in a store or elsewhere but i was never convinced to pay the price ! ⚡⚡

When Fender is shipping $1500 Tom Delonge strats out with crooked neck heels and off center bridges they really need to look inward before they come after anyone. It's ridiculous that any Fender, outside of maybe the master built custom shops, costs more than $800 with modern manufacturing processes. Everything is CNC cut now, finishes are comparable on the $160 Firefly guitars I have bought recently to anything that Fender is putting out in their American made line. Anyone who is still snobbish about Gibson/Fender/Musicman being better quality instruments hasn't picked up any of these new gen imports.

Glad I found your channel and I am now a subscriber thanks , I wish I found your channel a year ago as I bought a Frankenstrat from aliexpress and it was pretty crappy and needed alot of work but the paintjob and body alone which was good would be over $300 anyway if you were to have it done over here in a custom shop so essentially I payed for an evh body and spray and i'm fine with that but the neck and the action and the fake floyd rose was bad so always do your homework and recomendations for good sellers is important , I've run into one other bad guitar store on aliexpress that sold me a crap guitar and Aliexpress would'nt let me leave a review but am happy to name and shame here so that no one falls for them

The real issue is that no one who is buying a $250 guitar is going to spend 2k on a guitar. They are not losing customers, it's a different market completely.

That's a very good point. These arrogant big-name guitar manufacturers are just playing a deep-psychology con game on those who are willing to pay high prices to be seen as 'belonging' to an elite club. Meanwhile they pay their production workers (wage slaves) shit and pass half the price of the guitars straight through to the venture capital companies that actually own them, for redistribution to their investors and shareholders. This is a form of vampirism. And they have the retail buyers (many of whom put it on a credit card and let the bank rape them too) believing these overpriced guitars are an 'investment.'
It's kind of funny how Eddie had a Gibson logo on the headstock of the frankenstrat and that never bothered anyone. Then later it had a Kramer neck and logo and it wasn't a Kramer. Then it ended up with a Fender neck with no logo, but the headstock shape was licensed by Femder.. It isn"t a Gibson, Kramer, or a Fender and no one cared.

Well I don’t regret buying my two Wolfgangs but I’m with you: no more Fender products for me! No more Gibsons or any other brand that complains about these fake China guitars.
Fender might as well try and go after Linn Elsworth, Wayne Charvel, and Grover Jackson for "trademark infringement" by copying Fenders headstock, etc. back in the day to begin with. It's ridiculous.

Can legally do whatever you want as long as you don't try to sell it as the EVH model, interesting Fender would call, sounds like someone needs more work to do.
I ordered mine from same seller. In Lefthand. Which is something that Fender doesn't even offer. I hope that mine is a good one like yours. BTW I wouldn't have taken the plunge without your honest opinion and knowledge.

@BUDGETGUITAR got my lefthand one today. Some differences....headstock has evh logo, one dead fret (fixable) at high E 13th, had to remove a tiny bit of wood in tremolo cavity to get it to sit all the way down, had to raise the pickup by puting a shim under the foam, and had to do a basic setup as expected.
Overall, I am very pleased. It just looks the part, the pickup screams in the best possible way . I'm a child of the 80s and had the posters on the wall all VH. This is a Frankenstrat.
I am going to change out the potentiometer this one doesn't taper it is either on or off. I am going to get an EVH strap. I already changed out the volume knob for a tone. May put on the D-tuna.
After that I will be done and very happy.
That's great. I'm glad that it worked out. I am curious how equal qc is as people get theirs. I just put a 500k EVH pot in mine also. It was a surprisingly scratchy pot, but it does the trick. Thanks for the update. I really appreciate it.
Maybe somebody already said this but the original also had a Gibson decal that eddie put on the headstock in the early days.

I bought an EVH bumblebee. I had to remove the neck and shim it so I could set it up. $1,149.00!
I just remembered. I needed to put a block of wood in the trem cavity to get the trem to sit flush. They should take lessons from whoever made this Chibson.
Great video and superb points. What makes me laugh. Is as you said, EVH made his original Frankie from seconds / parts. It was a cheap guitar that he pieced together. It was and is a cheap guitar. Yet Fender…they make a “custom shop” copy and charge $20k or whatever, and fans lap it up. Who are the fools? It goes so to show the ridiculousness of Fender trying get heavyweight on you… when they change $20k for a copy of a $1000 parts guitar made by EVH.
Don’t take you video, as that Frankie guitar was around decades before Fender got anywhere near it.

Fender USA has outpriced themselves. $2000 for a guitar put together with a screwdriver is just plain wrong. The best telecaster I've ever owned is a partscaster. Do it like EVH folks! Build your own.

My understanding is that the stripes are trademarked and have been for a long time. Eddies lawyers had sent out cease and desists letters to companies throughout the 00’s because of the use of the stripes. I don’t think it’s the body.
Got the same frankenstrat from aliexpress 2 years or so ago.....same build quality.....the actual evh is not $2000 more in quality or playability improvement that s for sure......mine did not have the reflectors....put them on after wards.....and had to order the right coin....as in Canada.....american coins are rare....but came with shaller copy locking tuners......a bit overkill......but really like that it feels like they actually painted it by tapping it off like Eddie did.

I feel the exact same way as you do.... I build my own guitars now. I wanted a new Tele, but didn't want to pay through the nose for one. So, I looked up the specs on a 1952 Tele and built one to spec, I did add locking tuners... Body shape has a larger tit, that is the differences from Fender... Love my build. Now on my 4th and 5th build... I doubt I buy another electric guitar, ever... I did build an awesome LP knock off using my Ibanez LP as a guide. Names on the headstock mean nothing. The amp has no idea what name is on the headstock.

Why are they pissed? Probably because people like us are cutting out the middle man. Many guitar companies have their guitars made in China and/or Mexico, Indonesia, etc., and are sold to us at a hefty price. These Chinese replica guitars are getting better and better and the competition is what worries them. Otherwise, why should or would they care.

Did you replace the neck or sand it / clean it to remove allot of the dark gray "relic" the neck had when it arrived? It looks really good now, interested in buying one - appreciate the video and your position on Fender... they should go cry to "mommy".. Thanks!
Thank you. The neck is how it came, but I did angle the string bar and add the cigarette burns, and polished the frets. Other than that, the neck is how it arrived

The body on your guitar is probably glued together wood offcuts or at best Basswood. I bought one of these guitars and asked for pictures because I am left handed and wanted to make sure they are sending me the right guitar and not a right hander. I have not got the guitar yet but I looked at the pictures they sent and mine has EVH on the headstock. I don't know why since the original Frankenstrat never had that but well, I am guessing it will not be my daily player and will probably hang on my wall so I am not going to cry about it.
Here's an idea Fender! Lower your damn prices so that the average Joe can own a piece of Van halen history!!!!

Fun fact all the knock off guitars I bought all came better packaged than every squier I have bought one of which had the body and neck completely separated due to someone stepping on it during shipping

Thank you. Honestly, it's all about finding good communication. If that's good it usually goes smoothly. If they are slow, responding walk away. Many are good, and many are bad. I usually buy guitars from Ebay.

If anything it’s the Chinese maker that’s infringing, but you can’t prevent that. China is beyond Fender and any guitar makers grasp. The best they can do is prevent the import into the USA. But it seems they got in anyway. It’s weird how they can and a company like Tokai can’t?

Fender's got nothing to fear. They just introduced their awesome squiersonic range which are better than chenders..... i have bought quite a few.

Thank you. It's a flush mount. I decided to keep the FR because it functions so well. I did however change the string retaining blocks to another set. They had just a bit too much corrosion on them. Thanks for watching 🙂

The crazy parts to me, are as you’ve pointed out, (1) the original guitar was NOT a Fender guitar, and (2) the guitar from AliE does not have any Fender demarcations. I love Fender, but this is just dumb.
I loved Fender also. I hope they set straight the guy that called from EVH brand. I have thousands of dollars of Fender products. Plus bought some for the parts upgrades for this guitar. Now I can't in good conscience purchase their products any longer. That's a shame. I was going the next day to buy the EVH from Guitar Center to have both for a comparison video. Then mod the Ali guitar to my specs and keep the EVH stock to display. Yeah, that got messed up. I think mostly they are embarrassed at what a good guitar that China made. That's the only thing I can come up with that makes since. Thanks for watching brother.

This is very similar to when when a heavy handed band management group demonetizes a “What Makes (song name) Great” YT video, because it has snippets of their music it. It’s ridiculous, but I still like the band/song.

Back in the early 2000s I had a hobby/ side business relicing “vintage” Tele guitar necks and hardware.
The necks were “licensed by Fender,” bought from a reputable supplier (where I had a dealer account), but they were not Fender brand.
This was the early days of reliving and I put a lot of time into doing very authentic looking work.
Sometimes I’d get a hold of a a few bootleg Fender Tele water slides and add them to the headstocks. Even though I clearly stated the make of the neck, in my description, if my photos showed any part of that headstock logo, EBay would pull down and send me a message about them not allowing the sale of counterfeit products.
It was frustrating, but I knew the rules. So I’d edit the photos by smearing thru the logo, repost the auction and everything went fine from there.

The prices Fender are charging for the EVH guitars are just utterly ridiculous for a guitar which was basically just a random collection of standard parts put together by someone who (no offence to Ed!) absolutely was not a skilled guitar builder by any stretch of the imagination. The Chinese guitar, to me, is far more in the spirit of the original. Fender prices in general have gone insane over the past few years - I used to play US Strats, but they're just not worth the money these days compared to what else is out there, they've slipped into becoming a 'lifestyle brand' rather than the working man's guitar company that they used to be.
