Up here in Alaska, a suppressor on your bolt rifle is a pretty common thing nowadays, the idea being that it’s harder for brown bear and grizzlies to pinpoint the location of the shot(s) and gives you a little more time breaking an animal down. Some places, a rifle shot is an invitation for bears to come to your kill site.
Fudd lore. If you don't think a bear will smell you or the blood from what you just killed miles away you're drinking Kool aid. Also they'll still hear your suppressed shot a mile away too.

Just a rant but as a call of duty player it bugs me that in the newer games suppressors don’t affect muzzle flash, only sound and range, so the only thing that hides my muzzle flash is an actual flash hider. Especially in the new mw2 since they’re obviously going for some sort of gun realism

Thank America. In 1934, all sorts of stupid things were restricted. “Family is important. Make sure you invest time into them.”
Also don't forget about port pop. Especially on short barrels that eject at high pressure. Port pop on those is so loud your suppressor could be as big as a 55 gallon drum and still not make it quieter. I would also think about direct thread, especially for SBRs. You end up with a lot more effective length because you gain a lot of volume in the blast chamber, which reduces back pressure, which reduces port pop. Plus you save a little weight and inherently have better concentricity, which is going to help with POI and reduce the chance of baffle strikes. If you go the form one route, you may even get away with a tighter bore, which will also help with suppression.
Noted. Thnx for this bit of info

"Payback" with Mel Gibson: he uses a pillow as a silencer for his .44 Magnum revolver.
Jerry Miculek did something similar and I for the life of me can't remember whether he did it with a revolver
Saw a video where this was tested. Actually did a decent job reducing the decibels, especially when you consider that decibels are logarithmic. Of course, this means nothing for a revolver.

On the subject of dB's not telling the full story and some suppressors having a deeper tone, note that the lower the tone, the less the direction of the source of that tone can be perceived. This is why so many audio systems use just one subwoofer, rather than having two sub woofers for stereo bass, because stereo imaging in bass is not perceptible in open air.
❤
WoW, Brownells! That is a big partnership. Best parts selection online by far.
In my experience, DI guns being dirtier due to suppressors is generally over stated. The vast majority of the junk flying back into the action comes from the chamber as the fired case is extracted, not the gas tube. Piston guns are cleaner, but it's not a night and day comparison. Both get dirty much faster than an unsupressed gun.
Depends on how over gassed the gun is 😂. I’ve got an AR-10 that was over gassed even without a can (2-3 o’clock ejection, heavy recoil), with significant gas back through the charging handle and a ton out of the bcg. Sticking a can on it make it almost tear the rim off the case, ejection was 20 ft forward and 1 o’clock ejection pattern. And it would give me a ‘gas ‘stache’ if I shot it much. Essentially unusable.
Adjustable gas block fixed all the issues. Highest I’ve ever turned it was 6 (out of 15).😮
Get a piston operated AR.
Adams Arms makes a great kit.
Cup on end of gas rod helps escaping gas blow forward and really reduces blowback. And keeps carbon build up way down.

Using electromagnetic energy, the gun (railgun) can fire a shell weighing 10kg at up to 5,400mph over 100 miles - with such force and accuracy it penetrates three concrete walls or six half-inch thick steel plates.Feb 5, 2015
However the very first time I had ever heard of an actual railgun... it was projected to launch a 22 lb tungsten projectile at the 30,000+ mph figure. This would allow directed fire from VA across the Atlantic, over Africa, SWA, India, China, skip across the Pacific and hit metal on metal at Camp Pendleton.
Moral of the story is smaller caliber @ drastically higher velocity kills shit without prejudice.
Great information. When I got my suppressor I was more worried about the cost than anything. So I went with the Osprey 45k so I can shoot multiple calibers. 45acp, 9mm and 300 blk out which I have yet to aquire. Eventually I'd like to get one that will take both 5.56x45 and 308 Winchester. If I can work on any additional caliber I would consider it a bonus.
Makes me wonder what a 20” would be like shooting with a suppressor. The M16 is already one of the smoothest. I bet there is zero flash but one hell of a snap when that bullet breaks the sound barrier.
I feel supersonic rounds through a suppressor would be optimal in any ranged engagement simply because of the crack of the rounds further masking the shot
