  • This is some of my drumstick collection from famous drummers of the past from the great American Drum Companies of Slingerland,Ludwig,Gretsch,and Rogers from the 60`s and 70`s. When an artist would endorse a drum company back in the 60`s,they would have the drum company make a model stick for them which the public could buy.Today,the major drum companies do not make sticks for their artist. The sticks are now made by Vic Firth, Pro-Mark ,Regal Tip, and other stick makers. It was great when the sticks were made by the drum companies like Slingerland, who back in the 60`s was the largest manufacturer of drums in the world.Then in the late 70`s Ludwig was the biggest drum plant.I enjoy drum history and these drumsticks are a great part of this history of these great drum companies like Slingerland,Gretsch,Rogers, and Ludwig. The great jazz drummers from the past all had sticks made for them by these American drum companies. I have seen lots of vintage drums on youtube of these great American drum companies,but never a video on drumsticks from the past. All drumsticks shown here were made in the U.S.A. Here is a part of my collection for you to check out. For more info about me, go to kenloomer.com.

    I took a drum lesson from Steve Smith in 1980. After the lesson I asked him what kind of sticks he uses. He grabbed a pair of Vic Firth 2B out of his stick bag and handed them to me and said keep them! I still have them in the non eco friendly clear Vic Firth bag! 👍👏
    I saw him at a drum clinic about 7 years ago. I asked if he remembered and Steve said that he didn’t.😂😂😂

      Wonderful you took a lesson from Steve Smith.Way back in 1980 he was playing with the rock band Journey so those heavy 2B sticks I`m sure he used.I saw Steve Smith with his jazz band back about 4 years ago and of course he was using his Steve Smith Vic Firth Signature Sticks.

    I used to have some Cappella B.R. sticks, and loved the bead on them. It chimed like crazy!
    I started playing Regal Tip in 1992 when I was 16, and have stayed with them ever since. Today I play Jazz and Groovers models.

    Very enjoyable to see all these Ken. Thank you. The ones that spoke to me were the Rogers Roy Burns model. I had a pair that Roy gave me after clinic/drum competition 48 years ago. Long gone, but I still have a signed album "Drum set Artistry" that I received also. He was a wonderfull man. Years later, I got to speak to him again at a NAMM show in LA. I never had a camera with me and never had the guts to ask Louie or Buddy for sticks back then. I should have just ordered them from the catalogs. Cheers!

      Wonderful you got to see Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,and Roy Burns.I know Roy Burns was a big Rogers guy,but in the Slingerland book by Rob Cook,he said" The Slingerland kit I used was far and away the best drums I ever owned,and the Radio King solid maple shell snare was the best snare drum". Like you,I enjoyed talking with Roy Burns and he was an excellent drummer. I have so many pictures I took of all of these great drummers,and have put them in my video`s. Nice video, Ken. I also agree with you about the VF BR sig stick, they are quite heavy, and I know drummers would love it if there was a way to have Buddy's Pro Drum shop stick brought back, like VF did with Keith Moon's sig stick last year. I mean, they already make a BR sig stick, this can be their "BR Heritage" or "Classic" model.
    I find it hard to believe he actually played a stick as heavy as the VF stick is. I know a lot of guys like that VF stick because of its weight, adding the extra Heritage or Classic BR model would give drummers a chance to check out a pair of sticks from yesterdays drummers as they played them.

    The Joe Morello 11A model from the 1970's is much thicker (more like a 5a) than it was in the 50's and '60's. I asked Bill Ludwig (2) why this was the case and he told me that when the lathe cutting knife was sharpened, the sticks would get fatter. The knife itself turned one revolution as it went across the spinning stick in the lathe. When the blade was sharpened, the blade was of a smaller diameter and when it passed over the stick it was no longer the same diameter as the pre-sharpened blade. When I asked him why not have a new cutting knife made he told me that it was very expensive to make a new knife. I never cared for the sticks from the '70's. I have some of the much thinner 11A Ludwig sticks from the late 50's and early '60's, some of which were painted white.

      Excellent information on the Ludwig 11 A Joe Morello drumsticks. I have seen some of the early 60`s model 11 A sticks and you are right about it being thinner. Now I know why. Thanks so much for your comment.

    Love your videos, Ken. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into them. I was wondering what you thought of Promark sticks, especially the Louis Bellson model 727. They're a little longer and thinner than a standard 5A and have a nylon tip. If you're familiar with them, what are your thoughts? Thanks

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  6 років тому +2

      I have played on that Promark Louie Bellson 727 model stick before.For me it felt a little to light in my hands.Also I never use nylon tips since it makes the cymbal sound a little too bright. I like much better the wood sound on a cymbal. Over all Promark makes excellent sticks with so many models to choose from. Up to each drummer to find out what stick is best for your type of playing.I always like to check out the model sticks of other drummers to see if I would like it also. So far the Vic Firth 5A works best for me. Thanks Bill for your comment.

    Hi Ken. One quick question for you.....the vic firth Buddy Rich model drumstick, how does it differ from the ludwig 15A BR model?
    also there is a stick by Vater called the West Side model. It looks just like the BR vic firth signature stick but its tan instead of white.....................I really think its cool that someone like yourself would take the pleasure and the time of collecting so many sticks that are very wonderful to have. I think Joe Morello has a stick with pro-mark but I'm not sure of that.
    Pro-mark 5A is what Buddy Rich used according to Cathy when I spoke to her via email one day.
    She said that the BR signature vic firth stick was made for more of todays player.
    Also, I really love the fact that you're taking the time to reproduce charts of Buddy's. I feel that I would love to do the same
    but I mainly write all of my own charts. From one jazz lover to another ken, believe me, I would love to see you in concert,
    and would love to have my own band one day that produces music similar to jazz that is still being kept alive by you and other wonderful musicians. Love all that you're doing for the jazz world. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
    take care.

    Interesting buddy rich models. I was talking to guy the other day and he showed me a pair of sticks that buddy used that were made by carpella I think. The model that vic copied was way to big in the diameter. I used to use the vater version of that model. I wanted it to be thinner like around .560 and I had some made and it just didn't feel right. I've been using the Regal Tip 5ax after playing all types of brands and models.

      Thanks for enjoying my stick collection.They are a big part of drum history. Buddy Rich did use the Cappella model they made for him in the 70`s. Just to let you know,Cappella made the BR model sticks for Slingerland. Capella made sticks for Gretsch,Slingerland,Rogers and a few other drum companies. I think the Pro Drum Shop BR model was made by Cappella. This was the style of stick he liked the best. Very close to a 5A model today.

      KenLoomer Thanks for your reply Ken. I used 5 A sticks for years(still have about 6 or 7 pairs), but my main reason for changing sticks is how they feel in my hands, they are ethier to heavy or too light) Back in the early 70s I used Joe Morrello 11A. I'd like a pair of Joe's 11A sticks, but I don'f know where to find them. Your stick collection is very cool. The main difference between the Ludwig BR stick and the Pro Drum Shop BR stick is the tip of the stick. The Pro Drum Shop tip is acron shaped,and the Ludwig BR stick is smooth out at the end as you can see in the video. Both the same length of 16 inches. The Ludwig stick is a little lighter in weight. For me, I like the Pro Drum shop stick better. I know Buddy liked this stick better since this is what he wanted when they made the stick for him.

      I know Buddy Rich liked the Slingerland BR model sticks the best.When he played his Slingerland Radio King drums from 1983 to 1987,he had the Pro Drum Shop in LA make him a copy of the Slingerland BR sticks.As you can see in this video,Buddy gave me a pair of those sticks. It could be that the Pro Drum Shop stop making those sticks,so Buddy went to the Pro-Mark 5A model like Cathy Rich said maybe in 86. I did see Buddy in 1986,but did not notice what sticks he had then.

    I found a pair of Ruether 2b sticks at a yard sale it has the same blue ink and made in U.S.A. stamp as some you have here. It has a really thin neck and nylon tip. I can't seem to find any info on them.

      I never heard of a Ruether 2b stick. Could be a local music store that made sticks.Here in Tampa,Florida a local music store name Paragon,made sticks for their store with the Paragon name.

    Are the BR sticks still available at Pro Drum Shop?

    • @KenLoomer

      The BR Pro Shop sticks were only made in the 80`s,so they do not have them anymore.

    When I bought a pair of Vic Firth's Buddy Rich signature sticks, I adored them, mainly because I thought I was drumming with the real-deal sticks favoured by the man himself. They're heavier than any other stick I've used before, but if it was good enough for Buddy then I'd be willing to drum away with them - but from various internet sources (including this one) it's a little disappointing to realise my sticks are only Vic Firth's take on his sticks as opposed to having perfectly matched weights and whatnot, if only Ludwig would re-manufacture the sticks he once used they'd be doing themselves and Buddy's fans like myself a big favour. I still use the Vic Firths, without a doubt they are decent sticks, just a shame they are not legit in this sense. Thanks for the video anyhow :)

      The Vic Firth Buddy Rich sticks come no where near what Buddy Rich used when he was with Ludwig in the early 80`s.The Vic Firth BR stick is too long and heavy and the white paint is not a good look or feel to the stick.They tried to copy that BR Ludwig 15A model stick with the taper tip to it,but failed to come close to what Buddy played. The Vic Firth 5A model is much closer to weight and feel to what Buddy played. I know Buddy really liked the Slingerland BR model stick best and that is what the Pro Drum Shop copied for Buddy. Maybe some drum stick company will make that stick again. Thanks Damien for your comment.

    what companies made drumsticks back in the 1920's-50's for all the greats to use

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  8 років тому +1

      The big drum companies like Leedy,Ludwig,Slingerland made their own sticks back in the 20`s to the 40`s. Then in the late 60`s to the 70`s,Capella would make the sticks for Gretsch,Slingerland,Rogers and some other drum companies. Of course now,most of the drum companies do not make their own sticks. I think now only Ludwig make their own sticks,but so hard to find them for sale.

      The stick I use all the time is the Vic Firth 5A wood tip model. It has the best feel for me for the type of music that I play.

    Why have they stopped making these Ken and how do they compare to today’s sticks.

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  6 років тому

      Why have they stopped making what Roy? I don`t understand your question. You know that Rogers and Slingerland no longer make drums so of course they don`t make drum sticks anymore. Gretsch and Ludwig no longer makes sticks for their artist. What are you talking about? Today`s drummers have 100`s of models of sticks to choose from today. As in the video,I choose the Vic Firth 5A model since this works best for me. No way I can compare drum stick models from the past when today you have 100`s of models to choose from.

      @KenLoomer  11 місяців тому +1

      The Gretsch 3D model, or the Sonny Payne drum stick model which is only 15 inches long is a rare stick. I only have one pair, so I will keep it. My 1966 Gretsch Catalog listed those sticks for $1.40 a pair.

      Ringo Starr sold his 1964 Ludwig drums for 2.4 million last year. Maybe you can buy his sticks! I would say the three most famous drummers of all time is 1.Gene Krupa 2. Buddy Rich. and 3. Ringo Starr. I have a pair of Slingerland brushes that Gene Krupa gave to me back in 1971. Would like to get a pair of Ringo sticks one day.

      KenLoomer if it's the same pair he has, it just says "WFL Buddy rich model" on the sticks. They're from the 50's and I think we're from Ludwig. super hard to find. Only seen one sell on eBay for like $30
