    STORYLINE:
Palestinian children injured in the ongoing war in Gaza are adapting to life in the United Arab Emirates where they are receiving treatment.
The scars of the war are apparent everywhere, on the child who’s missing a part of his leg, his friend with a bandaged eye, the girl who’s trying to walk with her two new prosthetic limbs, or the kid who has a hole in his neck.
These are the children injured in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, who have been brought to the United Arab Emirates for treatment.
They’ve been here with some of their family members for months now, some for up to seven months.
In this temporary home, they’re trying to make life as normal as possible, the children are attending classes and nursery, with some even having decorated the rooms, they live in at the Emirates Humanitarian City (EHC).
However, it took a very long time to even get them to this level of normalcy.
Dr. Samah Saeed, who’s leading the mental health project at EHC said: “Most of them were resistant at the beginning, but we were knocking doors, going to them as part of a counselling process.:
The patients are screened once they arrive in the UAE and get mental health evaluations.
Doctors are looking for signs of PTSD, depressive disorders and such.
But Saeed says it’s challenging as they don’t know their psychological history, and if they’ve had any treatment or any medications previously.
And what’s even more challenging, is working with victims of war who may eventually return to that environment, she says.
The hospital at the Emirates Humanitarian City provides treatment for chronic and acute conditions, in addition to services such as oncology, paediatrics, and dental.
They also work with 10 hospitals in the UAE capital where they send patients to get treatment.
“The hardest thing has been being away from the family,” she says.
