The DMDD diagnosis first appeared in the DSM-5 in 2013 after decades of research on children with severe, impairing irritability lead by Ellen Leibenluft, M.D. - NIMH. In the 1990's these characteristic symptoms were either misdiagnosed as childhood onset bipolar disorder (which later went away in adulthood which is not a characteristic of bipolar disorder) or was labeled as ADHD with aggression because this label or "diagnosis" for these set of symptoms had not yet been created at that point.
