  • I tried something new to me, negative watercolor painting. The process was relaxing and I overall enjoyed the outcome. So today's video is a bit more chatty, because I wanted you to know how I was approaching it, what worked for me, and what I would do differently next time. If you don't want to hear me babble, just turn me off and put your own soundtrack over it. I'm never offended! I hope you like it and let me know if you've tried this painting technique before! See you next week. XO, B.

Never tried negative painting, but I really like how these turned out. Especially after you outlined. The leaves were my favorite. The shadows made it pop. Great job!

You are fortunate to have good enough vision to paint and see color. My father became about 90% blind suddenly, from a motorcycle accident and has permanent damage to both of his optic nerves. Glasses are no help for him. You are very creative.

I love that you're using a script liner brush rather than a marker. Much more organic

Ha! re seeing! Yes I have glasses too and I need a strong white light over my desk, which helps a lot. Love the negative painting, I'll have to give that a go! PS: your video is not boring and I love the voice over!

Thanks for the feedback! I too, need bright lights to work, but I haven't found a sweet spot that works all the time or for every project. Sigh, it's tough getting older 😩🫣😆

I just came to your tutorial after I have torn up three different attempts at this. I’ve never liked watercolour painting anyway so for me this technique is now a done deal. One thing for sure is having the right paper and the right brushes are imperative. However, At 86 years old my eyesight is good (with glasses) but my patience is lousy. Your tutorial has told me that it ain’t just me😂

Oh no! I'm sorry it wasn't working for you before. I should try another negative painting. These (and the ones I talked about in the video) were my first and only ones. Then I discovered alcohol Ink and got busy with that. And now, although back with watercolors for a bit, I'm into neurographic lines again.... Never a dull moment in my brain, haha!

I haven't yet tried negative painting, and now I am intrigued! Thank you for sharing it all in this video: successes and failures, likes and not-so-much. As for the eyesight, I hear you! I started taking the multivitamins for your eyes (Ocuvite 50+) and they do make a difference. And although wear about a +150 or +175 readers, I bought a pair of +300s just for fine doodling and more detailed painting. Those work too!

Ooh great feedback, I will try those multivitamins! I might have to up my prescription for fine lining as well. But I think part of not being able to see has also to do with me trying to keep my head out of the shot, haha.

Working with negative space is a great technique with watercoloring. Even in sketching… using charcoal. Love your calming voice and music in your tutorial. Beautiful results… thank you🌸 very recently I noticed my eyesight is challenged from looking at my cell phone screen, and I have been using those glasses that block out with the blue tint lens. I forget what you call those glasses, but I’ve been using those to watch television as well.

I have yet to try charcoal drawing, that's good to know. I have those glasses as well, but trying to find the right distance with my transitions is sometimes challenging, especially when I'm trying to keep my noggin' out of the shot, haha 😆

I too am trying to figure out negative painting. Definitely tricky for me, beginning with the fact that even a very simple drawing is a challenge for me. What I do believe tho, is that your choice of Canson XL paper contributed to your dissatisfaction with results sometimes. It was a good choice for learning on of course, as it's student grade and cheaper. I do think that you'd be more pleased with using a 100% cotton paper. (Just a "FWIW-FYI comment. :-))

Thanks for the feedback! I have 100% cotton paper, but I keep wanting to save it for some reason. I need to pull it out more often.

I really like your results - I think my favourite is the eucalyptus leaves. I’ve tried negative painting and got totally lost, maybe I’ll give it another try.
My eyes have always been poor, but they’ve deteriorated even further now - but I’m 67 you know! ☺️

Thanks so much! Of all the ways I tried, sketching out each layer one at a time was the easiest to see and figure out what to paint next. I hope you'll give it another try ❤️
