I remember as a kid in 75 same thing happened to us , we were in 65 Falcon Wagon , cooked engine no roadside assist .............Dad had to hitch to the nearest town while Mum and us kids stayed at the car all night and 1/2 the next day waiting for Dad to come back
Hi roll with it, out and about with family doing the best thing ever, exploring this great country of ours! Doesn't matter where or what, don't worry about small things, get out and get it into you, we grow old quickly and kids fly the nest in no time at all! Enjoyed your vid, life long memories to look back on and you will!
It’s all part of the great Australian adventure. Good times and bad they all colour your life with memories. Great to see you’re so positive about it. Keep on camping! 👍
That RACV roadside is brilliant. When your towing a camper and the family is with you its massive peace of mind!!! Great to see all was fairly smooth for you guys:D
Upped to the top RAC in WA 3 years ago but haven't done a big road trip yet, glad I have it though because once you are used to paying for it you don't notice the extra! glad to see RAC follow through with all the benefits.
Just checked my NRMA roadside and I realised that we're not covered for the caravan being towed. RACV much better coverage and yearly price. Have just cxled NRMA policy and started one with RACV. Great policy. Thanks for uploading the details of what they covered because otherwise I wouldn't necessarily have gone to check what our current roadside assist policy covers us for - or doesn't in our case.. Great vid.
Sorry about ya truck, sucks to be up ship creek without a paddle, having roadside assist a must , the show must go on. So happy you guys are safe and sound.
Hi Justin, I've been following for a long time. Is this the only time the BT has had an issue? Just saw the latest dropped vid, hope it's an easy fix! My BT at 140k towing the van and fingers crossed! Great vids! Keep on keeping on👍
Great Vid. I just went and checked my RACQ extra care. I've got the same car and recently blew the top hose for the intercooler which is a very common problem and replaced with metal pipes. I was reading, yesterday, that the coolant hose and housing (?) is another common issue that occurs around the 100k mark. I'm going to look for a stronger coolant hose or maybe get one fabricated. Its a scary proposition that it can blow and cook the engine so quickly. Anyway, looking forward to the Cairns vid
Bit of bad luck guys, but on such a great adventure, you can just about count on some drama somewhere along the road. Good thing you were properly prepared for the journey. Pity you missed out on the NT, lived there for 17 years, loved the place! Love you videos of your trip, fantastic.
when you said "you just have to laugh" I laughed. it was our favorite saying when we traveled, if something went wrong. keep going guys it's enjoyable seeing this beautiful country from someone else's eye's.
Cooling hoses splitting and blowing off on BT50 often means the EGR cooler is starting to fail, it over pressures the cooling system causing leaks and hoses to pop off. Get the EGR cooler pressure tested.
you just never know whats around the corner i hate electric gauges no water no temp good to see you had cover its a good thing all went well thanks for sharing the real bits enjoy the break
same hose split on my ranger lost all the water the temp gauge did not move as it reads last temp before water loss, and there is no low water level warning gauge from header tankThe engine was a total write offmy dealer had 6 vehicles with same issuenew engine fitted 1000 miles later top hose split this time in day light so saw steam from under hood able to stop instantly my glove box is now full of spare hoses
I also had a HF installed. Not necessary if you have a sat phone but being able to chat to vks and other groups plus access to rfds and abc radio was nice.
Sorry about your vehicle I hope you get it fixed soon enjoying your videos of Australia and best places to enjoy stay all the best to your family have a great day
Oh man, we just broke down between Katherine and Darwin and lucky had premium road side assistance. Good to know it happens to the most seasoned and experienced travellers (not that I wish this on anyone). But made me feel a lot better to see that with some positive attitude and road side assistance you'll get through it. Fun times
Great advice to make sure you're covered with RACV. Love your spirit guys & hope it was under warranty for you. Safe travels, our paths may cross in a few months.
Hi TIAV. Just wondering if you’re able to do a quick follow up in a future vid regarding what part failed, point it out etc. and what you suggest to prevent it. As a BT owner it’d be great info. (Currently looking at upgrading to alloy intercooler pipes, low coolant alarm etc. after watching this vid). Thanks again for you’re great clips! Safe travels.

That’s so uncool guys, hope it all went well afterwards and you get back on the road quickly. We had troubles on our trip last year, we wrote of our land cruiser in Nolan’s Brooke Cape York, lived in the Cape for 3 months though, so worked out awesome for us.
My brother had a Timing Belt go in the NT had been just fitted ( Madza Belt Split) and he had RACQ Top service, overnight Tennant Ck bus from Tennant Ck to the Alice plane to Cairns car to Cairns all covered, rebuilt motor paid for by Mazda Darwin. Love your coverage of the trip exceptional.
Well such is life 😀 but you guys handled it perfectly. You have also convinced me how sensible it is when travelling to have the full cover re roadside assistance. Love watching a true blue Aussie family travelling Australia 🇦🇺👍
Lived and worked in top end for many years in automotive trade, replaced belts every 40k and coolant belts& hoses every 80k, never had a customer break down from cooling system failure, something to be said for preventative ma maintenance, its only expensive until you break down then you find out what expensive truly is.
Years ago I had a coolant level alarm that had a probe you drilled into the expansion tank it made a horrible noise if level dropped or you did some extreme down hill decent looking at what happened to you I might see if they are still out there great show
Hot tip in the Territory, Pop open your bonnet its still a law in the NT that you must stop for a broken down vehicle due to the long distances between places.
Cant agree more, road side cover is essential. I broke down on Magnetic Island. The racv paid for car hire and accommodation in a resort for two weeks while we waited for a part to come from Japan. Had a a ball.😂
such great spirits, loving it! also thank you for all the useful info reg. roadside assistance, we are planning a 6 month camper van trip around Australia. your videos are super helpful, ton of great info!
Great video, I have a bt50 to I replace the standard radiator for a aluminium one twice the size Mazda radiators can’t handle Australia conditions just way to small especially if you are towing, and a nothing thing is to invest in a aftermarket temperature gauge as oem gauges don’t move until it’s all to late, safe travels
We broke down at 3 Ways last year. Blown Turbo ...... just started our trip. RACQ Premium Roadside Assistance saved us. Spent a week in Tennant Creek. 3 weeks later lost the caravan off the hitch near Daley Waters. Roadside Assist again......ultimate lifesaver. Best $299 ever spent
Bad luck about the coolant hose, I have mentioned this on an earlier video but get an engine guard temp alarm which takes its temp from the cylinder head and sounds a very loud alarm when you preset over temp is reached, as you advised a blown coolant hose and coolant loss does not always indicate a problem because the coolant it reads off has escaped, plus the engine guard has a large digital display so you will know what temp normal is, with or without the van, very good on long hill climbs to back off the throttle to baby the motor, keep up the good work, good to hear the RACV, I have similar coverage with RACWA, I had worked for them for 23 years before retiring and saw similar good outcomes Regards Tony
That's some welcome advice Tony. Several years ago we did a motor under very similar circumstances to the one in this video and had to wear the cost of a brand new motor. We ended up trading in on a new Mazda bt50 and at around 12,00k had to replace another engine (this time under warranty) due to the oil pump not priming after a dealer service. I've become a little paranoid when towing now and I'll definitely be taking your advice. 👍
Steven Plahn , The other bit of insurance especially when Towing is that I have fitted a scan guage, It connects to the OBD plug and gives you a lot of additional engine & gearbox monitoring but the main component is that it can read & clear fault codes, I have a list of the codes & what they mean to hopefully fix the problem and carry on without the vehicle going into limp home mode rendering it useless with 2.5 tons of Caravan on the back, we are in Perth and have done the Nullarbor the last 8 years to my visit wife’s relos in QLD
Tough break. Look up Engine Guard. Genuine Aussie made sensor & alarm made up your way. $99 measures engine temp externally, so fluid loss does not cancel out the alarm warnings like the OEM temp gauge, which needs fluid to work. I bought 2 for both vehicles, because you learn the hard way that by the time the temp gauge shows a problem its all over. Not what you want in the middle of nowhere. Hope #Mazda look after you for all the free PR you have given them.
That hose was a recall on the 2012 model. I had it blow and cook the motor. Luckily replaced under warranty. Mazda always new they were a problem. My BT 50 had two motors three gearboxes new suspension and air con. It has been the worst ute I’ve ever had. They have been fixing stuff on it for 8years for free it cos it has been such a lemon. Blowing smoke on startup now. Hope it will last till the new Isuzu comes out.
Enjoying your VLOG The breakdown was a real shame, but these things do happen on the Road. Good to see that RACV helped you out. RAC in Perth, WA were not keen at all on a roadside collection just south of Kojonup (263km south of Perth), and furthermore, they were not able/willing to entertain backloading on a flatbed like you had, or even towing our 26' van. Growing up in Darwin and buying Parts for Cars & Motorcycles: NT = Not Today Not Tomorrow Not Tuesday Next Thursday ("and then when that date came: oh....we actually meant the following Thursday...")
Stayed in same park in Timber Creek 10 years ago on our trip. Should have done the river cruise, you'd have seen hundreds of crocs. Good luck with the car but I assume by now it's all sorted
Mazda should cover it under warranty, ive seen a few 2013-2014 with 150-170k kms get engine replacements after doing a headgasket, they did have good mazda service history tho. All the best
I guess you have to factor such a situation into the equation when you are travelling for months or years on end. It's now late Jan, you guys are probably in Cairns and the car is fixed or nearly so, but the wet season has started late...you know what they say - when it rains, it pours, and I'm talking about the trip, not the weather! I hope Mazda is abiding the rules here in Oz - its not ok for the car to blow hose, pop the head and you guys end up with the bill regardless of being in or out of warranty - it just needs to be within the typical running lifetime of a vehicle - at least 10 years I would expect. Let us know how they treat you - we can cheer or jeer for you! Anyhow, I hope things have gone well and you guys are back on the road happy.
When you get to Cairns go straight down to Toyota and get a 200 series! I had a Mazda BT. Had problems from day 1 Bought me a 200 series haven’t looked back. Leaves the BT for dead, especially when towing
I've read lot's of reviews and I worked at a truck workshop in town with various reps coming and going in their utes. They didn't own the ute's as they were work vehicles. The Mazda's they had heaps of problems with auto trans failures predominantly but the manual's weren't fail safe either. A friend of mine was a rep and traveled the country & had the same story. Maybe it's something they've sorted on the later models. 4 cylinder expecting too much with the amount of weight on board perhaps but of coarse the hot weather put's even more stress on everything so possibly shorter travel distances departing in the early morning and be off the road by midday. Best thing and most popular ute by far everywhere is the Ford Ranger 5 cylinder 3.2. You will always have more torque and hp because you have more cylinders firing at any given time-also smoother. Aussie designed and engineered so even better. The only thing better if you take out the low ratio is a VW Amarok V6 or a Dodge Ram or Ford F150. That's some pretty serious weight you've got on the back. Bad luck with the hose blowing off-it's possibly something that could have happened to anyone and with the hot weather no doubt it all happened rather quick. Great video and a great tip with the UHF radio to keep abreast of road conditions and events out the ordinary. An area I've never being on the west coast nor the northern territory. Love to see Uluru etc. Even the Fincke racing at Alice springs would be real interesting. You guys handled it real well!
coolant hose going to the EGR? did the same hose on my ranger, it had popped out of a holding clip and was rubbing on the fuel return line bracket. caught it early
You guys should be trying to market things to keep kids quiet on long trips like that iPad holder. I want to go around Australia but my three year old daughter is a nightmare on long trips. Anyway, love your videos and keep up the awesome work!
Hi from the Uk. Follow your vlogs and really enjoy everything about them. I feel your pain when something like this happens, but you seem to have a good back up plan with roadside assit. We too tow a caravan, 28footer twin axle with a Range Rover pulling it. Fickle things Range Rovers. Fantastic when they run right but can leave you pulling your hair out when things go wrong. Got a good one at the moment and it makes easy work of the towing. Absolutley love how you have set yourselves up to go off grid and still have some luxuries. Keep your chin up and hopefully the Mazda will be hauling you on more adventures soon.
@@TripInAVan how did Mazda go in the end? Was it a gasket? Did it get covered under warranty? The BT-50 is a possibility for my next car, so I was intrigued as to how you went...
Ha ha I was sooo surprised watching this one…. Only cause I knew the Mazda packed it in, but just for whatever reason I had never watched this episode!!! I suppose from bad things (Mazda packing it in) good things happen (the 200 series).
You have had a pretty good run with the BT50. Especially as you’re giving it a bit of a hiding pulling all that weight. I was interested in upgrading to one but after joining the Owners group on FB I decided to pass. Heard that pipe blowing off was a common issue along with a few other common issues. Pity.
It’s a5 cylinder diesel from Europe I relieve from Volvo But used in many euro vehicles Good motor generally Just a few points that need addressing Like most things these days Nothing is bulletproof Except maybe a landcruiser
Good choice..I have a BT-50 and I have had a few problems, if you can wait till 2020-21 get the d-max from Mazda or Isuzu. Mazda will no longer get the BT50 from Ford They will be selling Dmax's
You may joke or not believe in NT TIME but it's real, take it from a travelling family running a caravan park in Darwin region. Hope to see you guys when you come back across top end
A good end to bad day. On any trip I do whether it be 100km of 10000km I always have a spare set of hoses and belts just in case. Never had to use them but cheap insurance. Always kept in my spares drawer and replace them every 4years if not used. Hopefully you’re covered under warranty.
Has no one ever told you, that you must let the engine cool all the way down before adding any fluids to it, this is so the metal that makes up the engine doesn't cool down to quickly and crack.
I have RACQ ultra cover for 20 years never used it yet but it’s a good insurance had it when travel with her caravan and I have it when I travel long distance with the boat wouldn’t be without it
Funny your broken down our ford ranger blew 3rd cylinder at kangeroo island and now we are stuck at victor harbour. Been without a car for 3 weeks. Luck the local ford dealer adrian brien ford have looked after us with a loan car. Hope you get back on the road soon.
Hi Justin and Bec, firstly I hope you get this communication as this is an old vid. We are about to take off in our van and went to increase our RACQ Roadside Assist but the max towing distance is 100k. I checked RACV and they are the same. Do you have a non-standard Roadside Assist that let you have your van and ute towed to Cairns when your BT50 died? Or is the Assist you had 3 years ago no longer available? We are towing with a BT50!! Thanks, Paul
@@TripInAVan I've been watching heaps of us vids past cpl days....1st vid I saw was ur Ute blowing up.....how'd u go getting it fixed or did u get a new truck??what's ur background/job etc??u from Victoria??keep up the good work😎👍
Bummer, having a breakdown, I had similar problems in 12/2014,was in RACQ,for 25Yrs,but still cost $1,400 to get to Tennant Creek, was broken down 250klm south of Tennant Creek, ended up stuck there, for 3 years,$10,500 in parts, machining, rebuilt my Winnebago engine myself in Caravan Park,I don't care if I never see Northern Territory again in my life?
We had the same thing happen to us just near Tennant Creek. Hole in the block. Sent tow vehicle and caravan back to Gold Coast on back load (cos RACQ Ultra at the time didn't cover caravan). Had 4 nights in a motel in town waiting for bus. Then 32 hrs in a McCaffety bus back to the Goldie. Never again. Will pay difference to fly. RACQ reimbursed us for the back load truck.
I'm not sure I understand.. wouldn't you have seen the temp gauge rising when the coolant started leaking ? And then stopped the car immediately.. How did it turn into a blown head gasket so quickly ? Surely the signs were there that temp is increasing
A coolant system holds around 10 liters of water, when it's got 15 - 20 psi behind it a blown hose can empty the engine in seconds, had a similar thing happen on a 2L diesel Hilux. Even Toyotas break sometimes.
I remember as a kid in 75 same thing happened to us , we were in 65 Falcon Wagon , cooked engine no roadside assist .............Dad had to hitch to the nearest town while Mum and us kids stayed at the car all night and 1/2 the next day waiting for Dad to come back

Cooling hoses splitting and blowing off on BT50 often means the EGR cooler is starting to fail, it over pressures the cooling system causing leaks and hoses to pop off. Get the EGR cooler pressure tested.
Shouldn't the EGR only be active during idle or low load? Could the EGR be simply deleted with a resister

Watching this, and a rental car banner ad pops up. How appropriate!
CharlesinGA smart those google ads hey
Stayed in same park in Timber Creek 10 years ago on our trip. Should have done the river cruise, you'd have seen hundreds of crocs. Good luck with the car but I assume by now it's all sorted
Cheers mate, we did get it all sorted so we are rolling again.
Great to see you using channel 40 uhf, i have cover most of oz carting oversize loads and it is so much easier when everyone is on ch 40.
Sorry to hear about your wheels! Good that you plan ahead and hope the 4x4 gets fixed asap xo 🙏🏻🇦🇺👍🏻
premium roadside assistance, saved us an expensive tow from millstream falls to karatha
What company ?
Did they say RSE ?
Mazda should cover it under warranty, ive seen a few 2013-2014 with 150-170k kms get engine replacements after doing a headgasket, they did have good mazda service history tho.
All the best
Ranger & BT 50 don’t have separate trans cooling system need after market trans cooling added, biggest issue with them when towing.
Scott Cameron yeah I’ve got the aftermarket cooler fitted
Trip In A Van - RoadTrip Australia Series good work, just plane old bad luck! Hope the rest of the trip is smooth sailing.
Benny Banger it all worked out pretty good mate and we are rolling again. Good times
Thanks for another great episode
When you get to Cairns go straight down to Toyota and get a 200 series!
I had a Mazda BT. Had problems from day 1
Bought me a 200 series haven’t looked back. Leaves the BT for dead, especially when towing
200 series won't be free
You guys handled it real well!
it's 90kmh with a trailer and same as trucks in the nt and wa.
SA is 110kmh
coolant hose going to the EGR? did the same hose on my ranger, it had popped out of a holding clip and was rubbing on the fuel return line bracket. caught it early
Def will be getting that roadside assist .... hope it all gets sorted soon for you guys .... 🤗🤗
Sarah Nading cheers mate
Happy Australia Days
Mark Saxon cheers mate🍺
You guys should be trying to market things to keep kids quiet on long trips like that iPad holder. I want to go around Australia but my three year old daughter is a nightmare on long trips.
Anyway, love your videos and keep up the awesome work!
Walter Trejo it’s just an occy strap😂😂
BUGGER!
I know that’s a Toyota ad, but still relevant.
NT time sounds like Hawaii Time.
We should all be on their time. 🤙🏽
Dave D LOL
Love it. 😆
Your right
Hi from the Uk. Keep your chin up and hopefully the Mazda will be hauling you on more adventures soon.
top cover with road side assist is always worth it.
Carmelo T stoked we had it
Oh dear, I have RAC WA, hope not to use it.. Heading South to TAS.. Hope to follow you on your next adventure
Jan L safe travels
It's nice
I have the roadside extra care as well and you can pay it monthly it’s not much over 20 dollars a month well worth the money
Cheers.guys good vid.gonna do the lap soon and didnt even think of roadside assist.sounds like money well spent to me.cheers....
Great video! Good to see you made a positive experience out of a bad situation 👍👍
Red Wazzies thanks mate, all part of the fun hey ✌️
@@TripInAVan how did Mazda go in the end? Was it a gasket? Did it get covered under warranty? The BT-50 is a possibility for my next car, so I was intrigued as to how you went...
Thoes towies are the true unsung heroes in all of this.
Happy Australia Day guys great vid once again there's nothing we can do in situations like that unpredictable automotive world 🇦🇺🍻👍🏽
Ha ha I was sooo surprised watching this one…. Only cause I knew the Mazda packed it in, but just for whatever reason I had never watched this episode!!!
I suppose from bad things (Mazda packing it in) good things happen (the 200 series).
Yeah it all worked out in the end hey
Hi Justin, you look like Rafael Nadal the tennis player but a good looking one .😄😁
You have had a pretty good run with the BT50. Especially as you’re giving it a bit of a hiding pulling all that weight. I was interested in upgrading to one but after joining the Owners group on FB I decided to pass. Heard that pipe blowing off was a common issue along with a few other common issues. Pity.
I heard they had a ford engine, don't know if that's true
ladytradiej westy Ranger and BT50 are the same engine as far as I know.
It’s a5 cylinder diesel from Europe
I relieve from Volvo
But used in many euro vehicles
Good motor generally
Just a few points that need addressing
Like most things these days
Nothing is bulletproof
Except maybe a landcruiser
Scott Dean LC200 yes and the Pajero!
Good choice..I have a BT-50 and I have had a few problems, if you can wait till 2020-21 get the d-max from Mazda or Isuzu. Mazda will no longer get the BT50 from Ford They will be selling Dmax's
Hope they fix the ute under warranty m8, same thing happened to me in Brissy though not in middle of Top end.
You may joke or not believe in NT TIME but it's real, take it from a travelling family running a caravan park in Darwin region.
Hope to see you guys when you come back across top end
how much does it cost to drive a ute towing a van around australia?
we spend about $1000 a week
Our car was written off in Darwin as well lol.. hired a car as well to do the national parks.. beautiful places are never easy!
Good luck your get it sorted
A good end to bad day. On any trip I do whether it be 100km of 10000km I always have a spare set of hoses and belts just in case. Never had to use them but cheap insurance. Always kept in my spares drawer and replace them every 4years if not used. Hopefully you’re covered under warranty.
What a stunning country 🇳🇿
I had a 2013 bt50 gt. 140k on the clock and done the same thing. Took 4 months but new motor under warranty.
Has no one ever told you, that you must let the engine cool all the way down before adding any fluids to it, this is so the metal that makes up the engine doesn't cool down to quickly and crack.
bruce taylor yep, we did that. Might not have come across that way in the video, but we were stuck on the side of the road for a long time
I have RACQ ultra cover for 20 years never used it yet but it’s a good insurance had it when travel with her caravan and I have it when I travel long distance with the boat wouldn’t be without it
Awesome job super cool video keeps it up more!!!!!!!
Glad it happened where you had comms. On that note what wifi and mobile system / booster do you have and recommend. Thanks
Neil Whitehead we have the Cel fi go. We’ve had great results with it
Great episode guys. Keep smiling! :D
Oh I’m not sure mate.. it was racv top cover.. from memory they had to tow it to the closest repairer which at the time was cairns.
Thanks for the reply. I think they've blocked that loophole and put a dollar limit on towing. @@TripInAVan
Hope everything works out for the best.
bruce poole cheers mate
Just came across ur channel the other day and must say u lot are truly "livin the dream "awesome stuff....!Got a good setup🤘
oldmatelinc cheers mate, glad your enjoying it
@@TripInAVan I've been watching heaps of us vids past cpl days....1st vid I saw was ur Ute blowing up.....how'd u go getting it fixed or did u get a new truck??what's ur background/job etc??u from Victoria??keep up the good work😎👍
oldmatelinc yeah got it sorted. Had to fit a new long block. I’m a heavy vehicle mechanic by trade. Not from Vic but the misso is👌
Do u have a base or u live on road 24/7 /365 days a year??🤘what Do u do 4 coin along ur travels?
Bummer, having a breakdown, I had similar problems in 12/2014,was in RACQ,for 25Yrs,but still cost $1,400 to get to Tennant Creek, was broken down 250klm south of Tennant Creek, ended up stuck there, for 3 years,$10,500 in parts, machining, rebuilt my Winnebago engine myself in Caravan Park,I don't care if I never see Northern Territory again in my life?
Wrapped your back
happy 2020
Michael Calleja cheers mate. 🍺
Hi yust watched your clip ho did you go was it covered under warranty and what was the damage thank mark
Yep, just in warranty . It was a blown egr hose
Did thay replace motor and was head cracked
Just smile and wave bro smile and wave lol
We had the same thing happen to us just near Tennant Creek. Hole in the block. Sent tow vehicle and caravan back to Gold Coast on back load (cos RACQ Ultra at the time didn't cover caravan). Had 4 nights in a motel in town waiting for bus. Then 32 hrs in a McCaffety bus back to the Goldie. Never again. Will pay difference to fly. RACQ reimbursed us for the back load truck.
Known issue methinks?
Mate had the same issue and did an engine in a work ute. Warranty job in the end.
Good luck with it all.
I'm not sure I understand.. wouldn't you have seen the temp gauge rising when the coolant started leaking ? And then stopped the car immediately..
How did it turn into a blown head gasket so quickly ? Surely the signs were there that temp is increasing
Ronald Reagan the temp gauge only works when there’s coolant in the engine.
A coolant system holds around 10 liters of water, when it's got 15 - 20 psi behind it a blown hose can empty the engine in seconds, had a similar thing happen on a 2L diesel Hilux. Even Toyotas break sometimes.
Do you think the hose that split would be worth replacing with a new one as a precaution I have a 2015 bt50
it would be worth getting your mechanic to check them next service.
We need an episode 25 to update on the repairs on the truck. Did Mazda cover it?etc
