Religion VS Reality

  • When presented together, the two propositions in this video are obviously silly, yet only one of them is recognized as such. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with how our standards shift when we’re dealing with reality as opposed to dealing with something far more fantastical. Perhaps it also has something to do with having a well established political and social system of norms and traditions backing up and perpetuating one of those silly propositions, often presented to us by loved ones when we were vulnerable children, or emotionally compromised by something.
    Why do people accept such silly beliefs, but then live as though they don’t actually believe those things? Perhaps it’s because servitude to a lifetime of running from the whip, whilst chasing the carrot, is too exhausting. I tend to think it’s just not real enough for them, and they’re lying to themselves, a skin-deep lie, because they want it to be true. Maybe they don’t believe as sincerely as their facade makes it seem. After all, if I believed my existence in eternity depends upon what I do in this fleeting instant of a life, then my every waking moment would be devoted to that eternity. Yet that’s not what we see when we look at most believers. We see people standing in line at the bank. We see people sitting in traffic, suffering occasional road rage. We see people not concerned with eternity. We see people concerned with reality.

      +Huỳnh Thiên Trung religion is:
      the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
      Atheism is: the belief in no gods.
      (By definition)
      The belief in gods, doesn't equal the belief in no God.
      Saying Atheism and religion are the same is kinda like saying life and death are the same.

      I don't believe in damnation. For people who don't believe in God to begin with, most think they will just cease to exist. That's basically what I believe if you don't live forever in Heaven. If God is extremely loving, then there is no such thing as eternal torment.

    This reminds me of a conversation I had with my Lit professor, who also teaches Hebrew scripture. Assuming for the sake of argument that the Christian heaven exists, and is exactly as the tenets of Christianity describe it, there are going to be a lot of disappointed Christians. The popular conception of the afterlife is that it's a place of happiness, where you can do all the activities you enjoyed in life without consequence. However, think about that for a second. You won't be able to have sex, because you're dead, and there's no need for sexual reproduction. You won't be able to eat your favorite foods, because you're dead, and have no metabolism. You won't be able to meet long lost loved ones, because what guarantee do you have that they ended up in the same place? If you left friends and family behind on Earth, you won't be allowed to cry for them, because God wipes away your tears and forces you not to mourn. For all you know, you could end up the equivalent of a brain in a jar once you get to heaven, because you no longer need a body to stay alive. You won't be able to do the activities you enjoyed in life, because if you're in heaven, you're only there to fulfill your one desire, which is to be with God forever. Although I'm non-religious and my professor is a theologian, we ended up agreeing.
    People base their concept of heaven on their experiences in life, because that's the only frame of reference they have. Yet the things in life that we find most fulfilling all stem from the fact that we will eventually die and therefore have to make the most of our time here. Take that away and all you're left with is doing the same thing for eternity, for no reason at all. And really, do you want to spend an eternity doing nothing but kissing the ass of a petty genocidal tyrant like the Biblegod?

    • @Wildrhody
      @Wildrhody 8 років тому +1

      +FrozenWolf150 Nice point you made! And, I loved the "brain in a jar," analogy:) That pretty much sums it up. I have to think there is more, beyond this existence, however...not in a religious sense, by any means. More along the lines of reincarnation. The word "resurrection," is anagram for "intercourser."
      Firstly, the word "intercourse" is strange wording for the sexual act, when one really thinks about it. Breaking the word down...Inter means to place a dead body in a grave or tomb....Inter(-) means between; among; in the midst of....and Courser means one who courses through a continuous passage or progress through time, or a succession of stages, like in the course of a battle, in the course of a year, or perhaps in the course of a certain time allotment or eternity. Maybe one's placement is dependent on their previous knowledge and deeds??

      +tabularasa0606 Given that the vast majority of scientists go to Hell, I'm figuring that they've already found a way to turn that fire and brimstone into a sustainable energy system for the use of all inhabitants including, of course, heat for the still producing fine whiskey.

    • @greenjelly01
      @greenjelly01 8 років тому +1

      +FrozenWolf150 It is not that there aren't philosophical counter arguments to the lack of body or metabolism in heaven - after all, God could just make your soul experience the happiness without needing the body. What is *really* funny is that the Christian ideals of happiness in heaven are all based on corporeal forms of happiness on earth.

Human psychology can just be so strange.I just hate so much all the issues thinking like this causes and how many people’s lives are ruined, how many lives taken because of people feeling they are crazy because of societal pressures.

      @@alexangell903 For sure. I had this conversation with a (spiritual, but not main-stream religious. Self described pegan) friend last night because she sings for the choir of a Catholic chruch (For the music, not the other aspects). I brought up the idea that people may also gravitate towards the sense of community they feel from it when they're feeling down, to which we both agreed that that's how they get you. Furthermore the fact that they have to prey on the vulnerable to gain a following is despicable, and a sign of what she called a "bad religion," or a cult.

      It's not really all about intelligence, although it does play a role. The main thing is to have the courage to question your own beliefs and what you were taught. Alot of intelligent people just can't bring themselves to question their religion because they were taught that questioning is wrong and blind faith is good. Also their ego won't bring them to admit that they were wrong this whole time.

    From reading these comments religious people are okay with not asking questions.. The 2 variables of this video were one in the same, the situation of the house is the same as religion but people are saying that doesn't count because he was trying to get her to spend her money but when you think about it when people just accept religion without really knowing what it is they are sacrificing their ability to think on their own, they live in fear & division for the short time here on earth.. It's actually not the same both people in the video are advertising places of residents (locations) while real religion (Christianity at least) advertises God, a relationship with God, and everything that comes with him which just so happens to include heaven. The video actually makes a point worth noting, I have seen some conversations between atheist and Christians, and quite a few of them are lacking personal testimonies (which is something so important that people will believe it over physical evidence or lack thereof) one of the reasons Jesus was so saught after by people was because people talked about him and what he did.

      I think most of you do not realize that the motivation for christians to live a good life and help others is not hell. If you study the old vs the new testament you will see how what jesus says and thinks is so different than what is written before. We are not living a life of fear, we are not making decisions based on ohh, I would do this, but then I'd go to hell so nahh. For example, you see a toddler on the street alone, why don't you murder her? Are you just afraid of prison? Or are you just a better person than that? Our motivation for good is simply to do good, and nothing more. God is not a policemen we fear, but a parent we love. We have a relationship with him, which is loving and trusting and we find him within ourselves. And in the end, if he doesn't exist, then what? We lived a life full of good, love, respect, happiness, and care. It is not about the afterlife, or not just about that. I hope you understood it, my english is a work in progress.

    • @mihai10stoica

But when I go to churches and see old ladies crawling around mumbling 'prayers', and kissing pictures, and teaching their grandsons to do the same, I can't help but think they're a bit brainwashed. I don't care if god actually exists or not, and I don't care if you're good or bad. What I'm asking is why do you choose to believe in such things, when a simple honest look around you would indicate they don't exist. And if it's the love, respect, happiness and care you mention, you can have that without god, and they'd be even more genuine.

    I enjoy watching your videos. As a Christian, I do believe these things, but seeing the outside perspective gives me reason to believe and understand why people don’t believe what I do. It’s ludicrous and I know it, and some points your videos have made show direct contradictions to what I’ve heard in my church (The Greater Insult in particular), and that helps me to logically inspect my religion.
    While I wouldn’t consider myself atheist, as I do believe that God is real out there, there’s no physical evidence to support the claim besides the existence of the universe. It’s all based on faith. Both theists and atheists believe in something, and how they view the world doesn’t have to be wrong. I agree with you on your terms of organized religion, though. It’s become corporate and it’s always been about control, even in classical times. I keep my beliefs to myself usually nowadays because of the rifts I see.
    I most likely won’t ever leave the theist realm unless it is definitively proven a God could not exist by any terms. That said, your videos give me a lot to think about, and not many other channels can say the same.

      @Aleara that is all maybe's, and one of those maybe is that a god exists, now what strikes me as odd is the fact that most religions mentions a god that created us and not a flying spaghetti monster or a simpler life form, or natural processes. You might say well its the easiest thing to come up with, "an all mighty being created us" but the only reason you assume its so easy to come up with is because of the fact it existed for thousands of years. Its 3 a.m I'm drunk and i don't know what the hell I'm saying but maybe logical thinking is not what will prove a god exists or not, after all as science continues to advance the world keeps getting weirder and weirder and its not really logical anymore whatever "logical" means (quantum physics for instance) Personally i find it fascinating how some religions can not be "debunked" (true they always interpret it different ways) but if a book can always be interpreted to not have any faults that's some hell of a book . Also, food for thought.

    Whether you agree with her politics or not Ayn Rand had the right idea about heaven:
    “The restriction they seek to escape is the law of identity. The freedom they seek is freedom from the fact that an A will remain an A, no matter what their tears or tantrums-that a river will not bring them milk, no matter what their hunger-that water will not run uphill, no matter what comforts they could gain if it did, and if they want to lift it to the roof of a skyscraper, they must do it by a process of thought and labor, in which the nature of an inch of pipe line counts, but their feelings do not-that their feelings are impotent to alter the course of a single speck of dust in space or the nature of any action they have committed.
    Heaven is where every wish is reality, and it sounds horrible.

      I'm an anarchist and not particularly a fan of Rand, but I do so wish more people would approach government in the same way that they should religion; by attempting to argue for it against a null hypothesis.

      +CapnHolic It has to be hilarious in hindsight, seeing that libertarians do want to achieve absolute freedom to create a heaven... for their own selfishness.

      Not sure about all libertarians, but Ayn Rand's whole philosophy was based on selfishness. She wrote a book about it.
      John Oliver did a great 'How is this still a thing?' on her.

      @CapnHolic 8 років тому

      some person I'm not a huge fan of a lot of her ideas, but it does go deeper than just be selfish, and is semi thought provoking.
      That said a lot of what she wrote is not applicable to the world we live in. Works just fine in the worlds of her books, but not reality. Also the politicians that love her would be generally despised by her. In Atlas Shrugged there is nothing but disdain show for "the men in washington" AKA lobbyists.

    I like this video because I can share it on my Facebook page. And it does not explicitly use the word atheist. Therefore I can get my Christian friends to look at it. It is very clear, that we should use our brains when people make grand claims Like religions 10 to do. I am also glad that it does not specifically mention any one religion. Good job.

    motion picture is actually a great way of presenting complex, commonly held dialogues into a one-way monologue, provided the flow is sufficiently common and reasonable, and we do'n't strawman.
    Well done.

    This a good example of conformity. If it was only a small minority of people who believed in god, no one would accept any such absurd notion. But, when the vast majority of people believe in god, others begin to consider it as a possibility. After all, there must be some reason so many people believe this. A majority this large couldn't possibly be wrong.
