Most lawnmowers will run on almost anything. He should try Bacardi 151 next or Everclear 190 proof. EDIT: I just found out they don't sell Bacardi 151 anymore. WTF? Wikipedia say Bacardi 151 is typically mixed in sweet drinks. Myself and my friends always drank it straight.
Bretton Ferguson They stopped selling it because Bacardi heavily promoted 151 to bartenders to use in flaming drinks and fire tricks while at the exact same time basically telling them, "don't set this alight, wink wink, and certainly don't remove the flame arrester cap! That would be wrong, wink wink!" They thought that half-assed, deliberately insincere warning would protect them from lawsuits if a bartender was burned - and it might have, but unfortunately the most notable victim was an innocent bystander who'd entered a bar to watch a basketball game and who didn't even know the bartender was planning on any fire tricks. She suffered third-degree burns, spent over a month in the burn ward, and was disfigured for life; she and her health insurance provider sued Bacardi and won, with the judge ruling that Bacardi's warnings were insincere and would lead a reasonable person to think there was no real risk.
Wow, I am astonished at all of the things that the mowers have run on. Perhaps you could do a little board where you record successes and failures. I think that would be a great addition to the video series and would help us viewers (especially those who haven't been following along the whole time) by not suggesting things that have already been tried.
When I was in college I used to run my car on anything with a flammable sticker. If I came across it, then into the car it went. Never replaced the CAT and never had any engine related issues. Fuel injectors were replaced when I bought the car and this stunt did nothing to them. You would be shocked what a motor will run on. Especially if mixed with gasoline.

WD-40 vs Starting Fluid in a Diesel Engine. For years I have used WD-40(no straw) to start hand pump hydraulic starter diesel lifeboat engines. These lifeboats were a massive pain in the ass. Especially in the dead of winter near the Sea of Okhotsk. And this ship only had regular starting fluid in the boats. One day, I couldn't get one of the lifeboats started an old timer told me to try WD-40, Sure enough, it worked like a charm, no knocking either. This same engine would go on to have injection pump issues and be impossible to start in the cold, but with WD-40 it was not an issue.
I have a good one for you. I am a painter as mentioned before. I was surprised on the paint thinner. I have a lot around my house. I use it to clean my equipment. One of the major components of oil paint is linseed oil. I was wondering how that engine would run on a combination of linseed oil and paint thinner. Maybe I can get rid of it on the cheap. LOL
Never did I think I'd be interested in knowing if an engine would run on paint thinner. But thanks for answering the questions I didn't know I was even looking for
On the paint thinner, the first engine seemed to run smoother than ever. Also, you should make a compilation video to show the deposit results of all the fuels you've tried side-by-side, for a full visual comparison.

Garrett Burrows Yeah,I wouldnt. I have used twocycle gas. It cruds up the cylinder head, slark plug and valves if you use it all the time. Then again,on a worn engine,it boosts the compression much like a wet compression test using oil in the cylinder. My mower is 30 years old so I dont care what I use in it any more. I doubt I can even get new parts for it. Its an old Snapper friction drive mower, the last of the best mower snapper ever produced.
Tailslol White gas/coleman fuel/ naptha is not the same as paint thinner. The first 3, seem pretty much the same, if not exactly the same. Paint thinner/solvent is something different and does not volatilize like the “gasses”. I sometimes used my Paint thinner/solvent soaked rags in my wood stove just to get rid of them. They do not really burn very well. I would not dare put a “gas” soaked rag in my wood stove as it would explode. That is why I am really surprised that paint thinner could power a lawn mower.
As a teenager in the early 60s I had to get the grass mowed before my dad got home. I got started and ran out of gas and had no more. I used paint thinner to which I added some linseed oil to get enough to finish the job. It ran well enough to get the job done.

I asked Dad will it run on Mineral Spirits? Back then you could but at bulk at certain gas station. We tried it cold, would not run. Dad had the idea lets run gas and get it hot. Hot the engine then did run on mineral spirits, but I remember it smoking and not running that well but it ran. So I guess I beat you to this test 52 years ago, lol. Great video, loved it.

_| I never would have thought a gas engine would run in mineral spirits, you definitely got my thumbs up on this test …_ Uhm, you're aware that gasoline is also a *_mineral_*_ spirit_ (›spirit‹ here in terms of rectified spirits) as in fundamentally minerally, biologically and organically-sourced? Gasoline is a biologically organic distillate same as spiritus or turpentine oil (which is the organic juice of a birch) - as all chemically-sourced fuel-types like ethanol et al.
@@gunners4129 Pretty much every kind of fuel or flammable fluid is dyed artificially for *distinctiveness* and marked to reveal when being burned. That being said, _they all dyed for either natural distinctiveness by humans for handling of such chemicals or for reasons of preventing tax-evasion_ …
This is great stuff. In a post apocalyptic world I can stop worrying about what to do if I can only get paint thinner for my lawn mower. Although it looks like I should probably be leaning to red lawn mowers because the paint thinner trick seems to work better in them. Great video as always.
You should try using diesel fuel as engine oil and see if diesel keeps it lubed enough or if it seized up or if it runs better or once heats up diesel ignition occurs
I have 2 more ideas considering the cost of suitable substitutes 1. Toluene 2. Turpentine Basically both are kind of ok to run in gasoline engine considering octane rating Basic idea is to find a cost effective replacement for gasoline Both are way cheaper than gasoline when bought in bulk (for industrial use ofcourse) My guess is that some ratio of toluene and turpentine mix might just be as good as or even better than gasoline. I know some people run on 80+% toluene but has difficulty in starting when cold It would be really interesting to see how it turns out
Toluene also makes for some great sniffing! It's been decades, but we used to sniff up gallons of toluene in Texas! Great stuff, and I always figured you'd be able to run an engine off it.
@@anselmofrias3330 I remember a motor sport tribunal in the UK hearing a case involving toluene. Someone had raced a car in a category where competitors had to use normal pump gasoline, and the scrutineers took a fuel sample and found it contained about 55% toluene, which has a higher octane rating than normal gasoline. It turned out that the specification of pump gasoline lists toluene as a permitted constituent and sets no minimum or maximum limit on what proportion it constitutes, although normally it is a very small proportion. The competitor was found not to have infringed the rules. I also remember a court case in which someone who was driving erratically on the road was found to have been sniffing the fumes from Evo-Stik, a popular adhesive that at that time used toluene as the solvent. He was charged with driving under the influence of a drug, and argued that Evo-Stik is not a drug. The court ruled that by inhaling the toluene vapor from the Evo-Stik in order to produce an effect resembling drunkenness he had used toluene as a drug, and found him guilty.
Well, I know that some people have done that, but how about running an engine on hydrogen? Just throw it through air intake along with air, and give it two stroke oil through fuel line in carburetor, so it doesn't seize. You could build a simple hydrogen generator with no problem, and results might be interesting. Careful though; as hydrogen burns very aggressivly (explodes actually) it might damage or destroy aluminum piston. But if you're careful it should be fine. And I wouldn't run it in see-through engine, glass might not last very long, and no one wants you dead.
Awesome stuff!! Do you think you will ever compile all of these tests and data into one, simple guide? A sort of quick reference guide? Just a thought. Thank you for the content, I can't wait to see what's next.
George Tinc Small iInternal combustion engines work fine with hydrogen. If he buys it from a gas supplier in a proper gas bottle, no more dangerous than oxygen or acetylene, both of which are extremely dangerous in the wrong hands.
Storage, not use would be my concern. I know the dangers of Oxy/Acetylene as it comes with cutting torches, i remember some idiot cutting over the lines and catching them on fire with a molten piece of metal, never saw so many students run so fast...... the teacher had a fuck it attitude and later told us even after running as far as we ended up, we'd still have been in hell, as the tanks would likely have leveled the block. Thank God for Flashbacks.
You should try and have one of these engines run for a couple of days non stop and see if it would eventually melt down, or if the internal parts would eventually break.
I know somebody that did regularly in what you would call a weed whacker, because they were too lazy to get 2 stroke oil. It still worked well from what I could see.
Found myself out of gas 3/4 mile away from home out on rough ground in the pasture and low and behold after sorting around in the junk in back of the old ‘75 Jeep Honcho found a half gallon of you know what. Well it was a hot day but it ran well enough to get us back home and often times a hot day with ethanol would result in vapor lock. Had to run non alcohol gas especially in the summer! Wouldn’t say it ran super well or that the exhaust smelled top notch but much better than hoofing it!
Acetone, acetate, denatured alcohol, methyl ethyl keytones, or MEK, or even lacquer thinner, or a synthetic reducer made for rust inhibitive oxide would all work. I just can’t imagine the seals in the motors handling that level of solvent for a very long time. Especially MEK, or lacquer thinner.
Can you run Coleman fuel or whitegas in an engine?? My dad told me stories about a lawn mover that couldent cut very thick grass until he did this i want to see the outcome or what happens to the engine.
It will run great. I use 50 to 1 oil mix Coleman fuel in all my 2 strokes. Have been doing it for several years. It cuts problems way down from standard pump gas. Doesn't go bad like pump gas.
The problems I found it cuts down is pump gas related issues. Such as the gas doesn't go bad as fast and gums up the carburetor. It also seems that the fuel lines last longer. If you used regular pump gas with methanol, no moisture issues. We also run it in all our saws at work and has cut way down on fuel issues and a trip to the mechanic. A gallon of Colman fuel last several years. And for a typical homeowner who weedeats once a week or two it usually last me along time.
Coleman fuel avoids e10 pump gas shelf life issues, but it is so expensove, and has a rather low octane rating. You are better off finding something like sunoco optima in all reality
@@devinwilliams3489 yes it is expensive. I think I paid about 6 or 7 dollars for Wal-Mart brand last year and for me it lasted most of the season. My thinking is, one trip to the repair shop more than pays for several gallons. So far my experience has been nothing but positive. Been running it for a good number of years in my blowers and weedeaters and not a single trip for repair. I notice little to no issues running it.
Hi Project Farm im from the last video's comments, can u please try running 100% ethanol in a gas engine to see if it does damage to the engine or does it help keep the piston and valves clean or no effect at all,i would really like to see that
My dad used to own an Old tractor from the 40s, that had a gasoline engine (DeSoto inline 6). The tractor actually had two tanks, one for gasoline and one for "white spirit", and you could switch between them. Apparently back then people ran them on paint thinner, and used the gasoline mostly for cold starts.
@@ProjectFarm the trans fluid clean up is to put 1 qt in the oil a few hundred miles before you are due for a change, not in the fuel, at least not that I have ever heard
I think the greatest thing learnt from your channel is that if i'm ever out of gas for my lawnmower/weedeater/blower/chainsaw, i'll just find the closest volatile liquid, pour it in and go for it.
Imagine this was commonly done on outboard motors. Know thats what my grandfather did in the 1960’s. Remember starting those engines was commonly a problem, and had to row home more than once. I didn’t realize there were specific oils meant for mixing with gas for 2 stroke engines, other than normal crankcase 30 wt. I believe the problem with regular crankcase oils is that they produce an ash which accumulates over time. Does anyone know when oil meant for mixing with gas for 2 stroke engines became available, or did I just not know better.
@@glaucouswingedgull in the old days, for me that was the late 70's that is all we used. I worked for the park district and the old man who was in charge always had us do it tgat way, and there was no real set ratio, just glob some in ghe tank :)

Why would anyone run a vic on vegetable oil when you can make perfectly good biodiesel out of it? Dumping cooking oil into your fuel tank would be dumb to say the least.
Love you videos, you are an awesome mechanic. I once put a gallon of paint thinner and high test 93 shell octane in my 2012 Camaro 3.6 L and it ran like a champ
Jumbie, i can burn metal but by no means do i call myself a welder lol. just had the idea when thinking about an engine running on vapors....and i wonder if it could be possible or would it just explode?
Michigan Farming bag now that won't work the wd-40 these days won't even ignite if you hit it with a lighter..... better chance at hitting it with a high power bullet so it ignites.
Thanks to your videos, i got a little sly and tried a few things on my moped. I found a bottle of rubbing alcohol like 98% isopropyl alcohol on the street the other day and i was running out of gas, i put it in the gas tank, it was like 500ml to 400-500ml or so gas and it run great, it needed a few kicks on the kick starter when it was cold though as i have no choke. After that i tried straight lacquer thinner which is mostly toluene-xylene after i evacuated the gas tank and surprisingly had no difference from gas, smelled cleaner too compared to the rich mixture i run at idle. Not really reasonable or clean to use such chemicals as fuel as most are more expensive than gas, but having watched your videos and knowing my way around in chemicals it was a nice experiment! Next thing i'll try is mineral spirits straight and with toluene-xylene as octane booster in case it runs rough. Thanks again for those nice experiments, i have enjoyed all of them!

Brake fluid is only moderately flammable. It will burn if it gets heated enough, but it is not classified by OSHA as a combustible.
Robert G diesels use hot air for igniting the fuel instead of a spark plug
Also compression plays a big part in its combustion.

Uhm, you're aware that gasoline is also a *_mineral_*_ spirit_ (›spirit‹ here in terms of rectified spirits) as in fundamentally minerally, biologically and organically-sourced? Gasoline is a biologically organic distillate same as spiritus or turpentine oil (which is the organic juice of a birch) - as all chemically-sourced fuel-types like ethanol et al.
Aren't mineral spirits white? Pretty sure this is paint thinner kinda like lacquer
@@gunners4129 Pretty much every kind of fuel or flammable fluid is dyed artificially for *distinctiveness* and marked to reveal when being burned. For instance, that's why heating oil/oil fuel is dyed I think orange, to reveal when be used as fuel in cars - to immediately reveal its use due to the excessive coloured smoke.
Thank you!
You should try using diesel fuel as engine oil and see if diesel keeps it lubed enough or if it seized up or if it runs better or once heats up diesel ignition occurs
Thank you for this recommendation.
Diesel engines have oil delivery systems on them for a reason, y'know. The oil pump is not there just to look pretty.
i agree with this one, the small amount of diesel that gets burnt of in the combustion cycle might add a little bit to the combustion.
I have 2 more ideas considering the cost of suitable substitutes
1. Toluene
2. Turpentine
Basically both are kind of ok to run in gasoline engine considering octane rating
Basic idea is to find a cost effective replacement for gasoline
Both are way cheaper than gasoline when bought in bulk (for industrial use ofcourse)
My guess is that some ratio of toluene and turpentine mix might just be as good as or even better than gasoline. I know some people run on 80+% toluene but has difficulty in starting when cold
It would be really interesting to see how it turns out
Great video idea!
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the safety precaution on the see though engine.
+Project Farm Thank you for your response. Can't wait for new video
I can’t believe you read so many comments! It’s insane man! I give you all the respect and props!
Thanks!
Awesome stuff!! Do you think you will ever compile all of these tests and data into one, simple guide? A sort of quick reference guide? Just a thought. Thank you for the content, I can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
Who would dislike this video?
Thank you!
Gas companies lol
CYLENTKILLS KUO DESTINY The EPA as well
Definitely earned a thumbs up. 👍

'I wonder if an engine would run on paint thinner?'
That thought just popped into my mind,...I did a search, and sure enough Project Farm covered it!
Will an engine run on acetylene or hydrogen?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Be careful with acetylene. It is pressure /impact sensitive and may spontaneously combust.
I'd be more worried about the damn Hydrogen.........
Thank you for this recommendation.
Still waiting to see one of these motors run on hopes and dreams...
Or a mix of the media's lies, distortions, and exaggeration and people's ignorance.
@@electric7487 infinite power, totally green and renewable.
That would be the Dem model sir. 🤠
@@SailingSarah indeed.
The new Green deal?
I am very surprised it ran so well. Learn something new all the time. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you!
Try to run a engine with strong Moonshine 😬, great video as usual👍👍👍👍
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
AXE body spray, that sounds weird enough. And that shit burns like crazy!
Thank you for this recommendation.
Great video! How about wd40 in the crank case instead of engine oil?
Thank you for this recommendation.
As usual another awesome video. Love what you do.
Thanks!
Love the videos project farm. Still hoping to see a vid on will a small engine run on 118 octane racing fuel. Would be awesome
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
This might be a little more challenging but what about HHO/hydrogen running a engine? I know it will work but what are the effects on a engine?
This is a terrific video idea. Thank you for this recommendation.
Hey could you please test if you can use WD-40 as oil in a small engine?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Thanks for sharing.
How about running an engine on Nail Polish Remover
Junovay Plays acetone, I would also like to see it
Thank you for this recommendation.
thats pretty much the same as this
Acetone, acetate, denatured alcohol, methyl ethyl keytones, or MEK, or even lacquer thinner, or a synthetic reducer made for rust inhibitive oxide would all work.
Thank you for this recommendation.
Lighter fluid. charcoal/BBQ lighting fluid.
Thank you for this recommendation.
I like how masterfully crafted that transparent fuel tank system is
Thanks for the feedback.
What about water in the crank case instead of oil?
Thank you for this recommendation.
mystic1754 it's called an idea .
i would like to see you replace the oil with water to see what kind of if any lubricant it will offer it
It offers basically none from what I've seen in the past... engine fails just like no oil.
yeah but it would make for a good video
Thank you for this recommendation.
Will a engine run 25% NITRO RC CAR FUEL?

Can you try acetone?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Since Christmas is coming up we need an idea for a holiday run. Like Eggnog for oil
LOL! Thank you for this recommendation.
Hi Project Farm im from the last video's comments, can u please try running 100% ethanol in a gas engine to see if it does damage to the engine or does it help keep the piston and valves clean or no effect at all,i would really like to see that
He did, a couple months ago,
ua-cam.com/video/2XB2MeNgVW0/v-deo.html
My dad used to own an Old tractor from the 40s, that had a gasoline engine (DeSoto inline 6). The tractor actually had two tanks, one for gasoline and one for "white spirit", and you could switch between them. Apparently back then people ran them on paint thinner, and used the gasoline mostly for cold starts.
Great information. Thank you
Can you spray NITROUS in the intake to see what will happen?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Cant wait to see this !!! I am sure you will make an epic video with NITROUS! Lawn mower on nitrous will look awesome!
Can it run on my hopes and dreams?
I wish it would. Thanks for commenting.
Same. Haha, love the vids, keep it up
Yes it will become my husband had a 1939 john deere H run on paint thinner when I ran out of gas
These videos are pure gold post apoc.
Mahalo!
Thank you!
I say try this on a Dodge Hellcat next
@Homefront: you first
Test to see how well transmission fluid cleans up carbon deposits. Been hearing that's an old mechanics trick for ever..
Thank you for this recommendation.
@@ProjectFarm the trans fluid clean up is to put 1 qt in the oil a few hundred miles before you are due for a change, not in the fuel, at least not that I have ever heard
mtd610 I do that in my Diesels. Works great!
Run an engine on axe or old spice body spray

gabriel molina I know right
Project Farm you should do this one. My brother buys tons of that shit. I'd gladly use it for the lawn lol

He did and there was no change. I know... bummer.
How about straight up NOS in gas engine?
Sithhy since nos is essentially better air, nope it wont run
Thank you for this recommendation.
U seem very good with small engines. I have an Old Diesel roto tiller. I never had time to work on. Needs work. Just a thought. Any way. Love the vid.
I'd love to have a small diesel engine. Please let me know if you'd like to sell it and where you're located at projectfarm52@gmail.com
I’m stunned… paint thinner worked! 4 years old but still very much informative to new subs!
Thanks for watching!
You should get a engine to run off a shot of NOS or see how how much nos it takes to blow it up
Tool Craze there are vids of this on youtube

Run a 2 stroke using regular motor oil mixed with gas
Thank you for this recommendation.
When I was a kid I had a 94 suzuki rm250 that when I was out of cash I would use 10w40 Castrol as my premix oil. It stunk like crap and fouled the occasional plug but would keep me going til I could scrounge and get some maxima super m
how about moonshine?
I think he already ran everclear...
really, its best to just use the fuel the engine was made for. I'm just saying try it for the heck of it. This is why he makes these videos.
Unless you can get it to 190 proof it probably won't work.
already DONE
I love watching these videos because in a SHTF scenario I know what I can run a generator off of in a pinch or any engine for that matter.

Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
They did this on haggard garage
AndrewKidd14145 yes with a Liquid Cooled V8 Car Engine Filled With Soda in the Radiator Not In an Air Cooled Engine Like Project Farm
Why would anyone run a vic on vegetable oil when you can make perfectly good biodiesel out of it? Dumping cooking oil into your fuel tank would be dumb to say the least.

try running an engine on acetylene and oxygen
Chris Beard lol
Thank you for this recommendation.
chris you must be a welder for that suggestion
Jumbie, i can burn metal but by no means do i call myself a welder lol. just had the idea when thinking about an engine running on vapors....and i wonder if it could be possible or would it just explode?
Setting the mix must be super easy on this. I remember the safety briefing on acetylene and it ignites over such a wide range of air/acetylene ratio.
Try running a engine on wd40!!
Michigan Farming there's already a multitude of videos on it
Thank you for this recommendation.
I want to know the answer to that too!
Michigan Farming bag now that won't work the wd-40 these days won't even ignite if you hit it with a lighter..... better chance at hitting it with a high power bullet so it ignites.
Try to run the engine on wegetableoil mixed with gasoline
Thank you for this recommendation.
You are welcome!
