I do not know why, but I can’t stop watching these videos! I’m not too educated in the mechanical aspect but it’s just so cool to watch you do this stuff
There are a lot of "off grid" people who have Digesters which take human and animal waste and put enzymes in a vessel, with no oxygen. this produces methane, that's not quite pure. it produces about 800 BTU's per cubic foot, rather than natural gas, which is about 1,050 BTU's. They use it to run generators, as well as for heating purposes. It works pretty well, but the engines are about 30% down on power compared to gasoline. It burns so clean, there is no tell-tale odor.
As a mechanic we used to do stuff, but there is one that i was always thinking about... nowdays in the Uk the carbon cleaning service became a really popular thing, we used to do it on a cheap way. Simply just spray some water into the intake (i mean spraying with a window cleaner bottle or a mist nozzle) could you please prove this one for me?? Obviously becareful not to hydrolock the engine.
There os actually evidence of this working. Take a look at a cylinder that has a bad head gasket leaking coolant into it and it is often cleaner then the others. It may take some time but works well. Water is also the cheapest cleaner you can get too
As a CMAT here is a trick many may not have thought of... When a vehicle with a defective electric fuel pump is towed in and parked, disconnect the intake boot and with the help of a driver... use brake clean to start the engine and walk along with it to move the vehicle into the repair bay. Works ever-time and I've never had a problem ! Nice video...
"Will a Gas Engine Run on Brake Parts Cleaner?" Ok, you have my attention lol. You are doing a great job making these videos entertaining... cant think of anything to suggest for improvement. Very interesting and entertaining videos as is.
Yip I use brake clean routinely to richen up a petrol engine(testing for fuel trims, air leaks etc) run an engine with no fuel pump, and occasionally start diesels(outing it direct into the intake so it can't pool in the intercooler) . Not to mention its amazing cleaning properties. Amazing stuff. It will flash on a hot catalyst tho so be warned when cleaning oil leaks on a running engine :)
I've used brake parts cleaner multiple times to start old vehicles in scrap yards to see if they run, I almost bring brake parts cleaner instead of starting fluid on purpose. Love what you do Project Farm!
I may be a little late, but "That throttle work" is also the quickest method to diagnose a way-too-common carburetor problem. Even though the manufacturer is REQUIRED by the EPA to certify their engines for gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol, they still use gasket, etc, material that degrades in ethanol. If someone puts pump/automotive gasoline containing the standard additive level of ethanol into their mower for normal use, sooner or later it will cause the mower to stop running. The most common problem I have seen is that the needle valve seat (part of the carburetor that opens up to let gas into the carburetor) will swell up and cause the carb bowl to only fill part way, and the mower just won't run any more. Unless you literally choke it with your hand. The normal intake vacuum isn't strong enough to pull up gas from a partly filled bowl, but when you choke it outside the normal mechanism, the increased vacuum causes fuel to flow, and the engine to run, until you take your hand away and stop choking it. The seal that swells up and causes the whole mower to quit costs less than $0.50 each.
I cant imagine you being able too make them more educational. Love all your videos. Thanks for doing what you do! Quick question for you. Are you just farm smart, or did you take a mechanical engineering course?
Ive got a suggestion, when you compare carbon buildup running different fuels or showing the see through cylinder head, why not show what it looks like on regular gasoline? like for the carbon buildup show what the engine looks like running on gasoline for a similar amount of time so we can have something to compare it to. Also why arent you cleaning the valves and cylinder head so carbon buildup transferring from the piston and valves to the cylinder head doesnt happen?
Thank you for this recommendation. The goal of leaving the piston and valves uncleaned is to determine if the product cleans. This stuff actually did a pretty good job cleaning carbon off of the piston. Thanks again.
Well if you are trying to determine if it cleans why not run it twice once uncleaned to see if it cleans then clean it and run it again to see if it makes it dirty?
Here's an idea! Shell and bp advertise there has burned cleaner and or even will clean your engine at there to tear fuel. We should compare to in your area is considered not so good fuel.
I like this idea. Try a long term test of different brands or grades of gasoline. Discount versus brand name and a separate test- regular vs. Premium. Run for hours or days.
I think it could be interesting to see the results clean, dirty will it clean? Temperature differences. shoot yea! I know it would be a lot but if you or a friend even had a thermal type camera to see the flashing burn temperature difference while using the see thrue head that would be cool to. But that's a lot of $$$.
Hey! I think your videos are great the way they are! Very interesting very to the point and informative, I wouldn’t change anything! Also something that may be a little to dangerous but an idea nonetheless, could an engine run on acetylene?
A small amount at a time or lo flow.. You know how sooty it is by itself. Lighting a torch with the valve barely cracked with no oxygen and all the little black soot worms floating around. That stuff is extremely rich.
If you add acetylene to a small milk container and a short burst of oxy before running a lit torch over it , I reckon that would be very similar to what would happen in the combustion chamber. Be good to see if it does clog up the spark plug and valves.
What did you expect, 200+ customized responses per video? Most of the ideas are pretty same-y, so unless its really interesting or a lot of people want it chances are its not going to warrant a video. However given the video content has literally been pulled from the comments for some time now, claiming comments are being ignored is pretty silly.
Alien Mechanic I have used annealed copper for this cut on a home built CNC with success. I have not yet done this on larger engines though myself. Just an older cast steel Briggs. Google "fedtech gaskets" I believe if you can design it they can make it, if it's something worthy of the costs.
Could you try running a tank of fuel through a regular engine, then the same amount of fuel through the fuel vapor engine and compare running time? I'd find it interesting to know how much longer one might run over the other. For fuel economy purposes, I mean. I've heard of people running cars on fuel vapors in competitions, but I wonder how much it boosts economy.
dirty ford101 diesel will run just fine , you have to start with diesel and stop with diesel or the fuel injector will jam when the cooking oil cools down and becomes think ......... , you will also need fuel tank heater to keep the oil warm and yes it will run with used cooking oil just make sure that it is not dirty (should not contain big enough particles to clog the fuel line or injectors)
People that run it all the time filter it to start with. Not bad in warmer climates but would be tough to keep hot enough in cold places. I've seen diesel heaters used in rigs running up North that use coolant to heat the fuel which was diesel and maybe it'd keep the cooking oil hot enough. Just don't know about that. I'd just run diesel and try and dodge the headaches.
This would be a good one for a diesel engine. With (really) old formulations of the stuff. New stuff wouldnt burn by design. To bad he doesnt have any of those.
The vapor setup ran amazingly well! I take it you did another video on running gas on vapor?! I'll go look for it, I wonder how it compares efficiency wise, afr changes, better/worse mixture in the combustion chamber etc. Neat stuff man this channel has hours and hours of awesome information!! You can't trust manufactures, or most groups that review products, what a gift to have someone doing all sorts of tests and showing real results!!
@@ProjectFarm the set up this guy has isn't doing anything differently from the carburator. The he's highly agitating the fuel causing as much atomization as the carburator would do left in it's own. For it to be useful at all you have to dial in the agitation rate. It else it's just a cook looking perpetual motion machine you see where they hide the motor. My bubbler set up on my power washer nets noticeable gains. It operates a little lower rpm than it did off the carb but my water psi hasn't dropped. I also need to use a little fuel by way of through the carb or starting fluid to get the motor started. Since engines use more to start than they do to idle. My ratio will run it but won't start it. And that's where you see the difference in consumption. I had to mes with mine quite a bit to get it right. And my pressure washer was the most thirsty small engine tool I owned now is at least 25-30% better
Yeah, Project Farm mentioned that at the start of the video. Could also try running on freon while it is still available, but burning freon can be deadly because of phosgene gas (mustard gas) produced!
ojars zvaigzne Freon won’t burn as fuel I even vented some into the intake manifold of a diesel before it was illegal to vent and all it did was make a little phosgene in the exhaust and then engine shut off from lack of oxygen seconds after
Another great vid mate. Looks like it runs lean after checking the spark plug. But it still works. Also probably won't be getting the upper cylinder lubricated like petrol provides. Cheers mate 👍

@KevinHendley Yes it will I had a Go-Kart and didn't want to leave it there to go get gas and i noticed a full can of Axe in the ditch (odd I know) and bypassed the air filter and cranked on it while spraying and drove the thing all the way back to the barn (where I had gasoline) I took off head cause I didn't feel much compression and the axe had eaten into the head gasket. But yes it will run on axe.

Thank you for this recommendation.
There os actually evidence of this working. Take a look at a cylinder that has a bad head gasket leaking coolant into it and it is often cleaner then the others. It may take some time but works well. Water is also the cheapest cleaner you can get too
Ferenc Samarus I have to admit in the u.s. this is not common practice.
I bet a water-meth injection system would keep engines nice and clean
that is true. Also water injection was used in WW2 planes with superchargers. There the cleaning was a happy byproduct but still happened
Great tip! Thank you
"Will a Gas Engine Run on Brake Parts Cleaner?"
Ok, you have my attention lol.
You are doing a great job making these videos entertaining... cant think of anything to suggest for improvement.
Very interesting and entertaining videos as is.
LOL! Thanks for commenting.
As a mechanic we used brake cleaner to drive cars into the shop that had failed fuel pumps.
junkyardhemi I drove a motorcycle without a carb using brake cleaner once...
Thanks for commenting on this.
junkyardhemi Old school!👍👍😎
Yip I use brake clean routinely to richen up a petrol engine(testing for fuel trims, air leaks etc) run an engine with no fuel pump, and occasionally start diesels(outing it direct into the intake so it can't pool in the intercooler) . Not to mention its amazing cleaning properties. Amazing stuff. It will flash on a hot catalyst tho so be warned when cleaning oil leaks on a running engine :)
Yes, i've done that too
I'm amazed that all of these tests have run on the vapor mower. Well some needed fuel mixed but still amazed.
Thanks for commenting.
I've used brake parts cleaner multiple times to start old vehicles in scrap yards to see if they run, I almost bring brake parts cleaner instead of starting fluid on purpose. Love what you do Project Farm!
Thank you!
@3:22
That throttle work though!
You did a great job keeping it going, until I guess the engine heated up enough to atomize.
Thank you!
TheGirfan1234 I like this idea.
You have the best channel on UA-cam. Please keep making these videos. I'm a small engine mechanic and I love watching your experiments.
Thank you
These videos are super entertaining! Thank you and what a great channel!
Thank you very much!
Here's an idea! Shell and bp advertise there has burned cleaner and or even will clean your engine at there to tear fuel. We should compare to in your area is considered not so good fuel.
Thank you for this recommendation.
Everytime I think my life sucks and I watch one of your videos.... I realize I could have been a lawnmower and feel better.
You got to have the best kept lawn on UA-cam! I love the videos and how concise you are. Keep it up!
Thanks 👍
Magic fingers getting that thing started.
MAF cleaner works as well if you're out of starter and everything else. Tested first hand on my generator, really revs up the V-twin.
what happens to an engine when you fill the crankcase with water or coolant instead of oil?
Thank you for this recommendation.
It won't run. My dad filled his chainsaw with old antifreeze coolant that he thought was mixed gas. Wouldn't start
hand held garage I'm not saying as fuel I'm saying in place of oil
water would boil off pretty fast I'd think, plus no lube properties
cdouglas1942 yeah I want to see what happens.
I’d love to see a similar test with that EGR cleaner aerosol you get for removing carbon deposits. I think a carbon removal series needs to be done.
Thank you for the video idea!
Man seeing your videos now versus 2 years ago, you've come a long way man! Much more thorough and professional. Congrats and awesome work!
Thank you very much!
Please try Liqui Moly Cera Tec or Liqui Moly Anti-Friction Oil Treatment In a test or vs each other. thanks
Thank you for this recommendation.
Yes!
try to do videos on cleaning catalytic converters no one found the right stuff to clean them and i think you'll find it !
Thank you for this recommendation.
Thanks!! I've been waiting for this vid, keep up the great work, mabye try butane or propane??
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
Your videos are among my favorite videos on UA-cam. Thanks for all of the effort that goes into making them.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for this recommendation and thanks for the positive comment.
Oh I definitely know, what would make the engine stop first build up in the exhaust? Around the valve, or just clog the spark plug?
If you add acetylene to a small milk container and a short burst of oxy before running a lit torch over it , I reckon that would be very similar to what would happen in the combustion chamber.
Be good to see if it does clog up the spark plug and valves.
Sounds like when we used to shoot 2 liter bottles across the shop in the same way!
6:54 shows how you can tell this engine's got some serious balls!
Thank you!
Can you show us at what rpm valves will float on a lawn mower? I’d guess 7000rpm!
Thank you for this recommendation.
Please use some sort of remote method to rev this up if it is done. One of these engines can be rather dangerous coming apart at high RPM.
I don't think you can get much more than 4000 rpm. Also the risk of blowing the engine gets real high.
He's just ignoring all of your comments you look at every single comment and the reply from project farm is "Thank you for this recommendation".
What did you expect, 200+ customized responses per video? Most of the ideas are pretty same-y, so unless its really interesting or a lot of people want it chances are its not going to warrant a video. However given the video content has literally been pulled from the comments for some time now, claiming comments are being ignored is pretty silly.
Project Farm, you are seriously one of the best channels going on youtube
Thank you!
Is it possible to use alternative materials for head gasket?
When it is impossible to get an original gasket, like for an old engine
Thank you for this recommendation. I'll see if I can do a video on this.
Project Farm Do 30 pack beer boxes first!
Alien Mechanic yes , condoms are good alternative! JK
I'd try cardboard rtv cork a few layers of thick foil and of course just jb weld the head to the block
Thanks for the recommendation.
... Will a gas engine work on shattered hopes and dreams? :D
Mine doesn't.
Mine does
Will it run on thoughts and prayers?
@@mwingaa yeah, a 50cc 4 stroke will do that, lol
Nope, only a common man works on those.
There isn’t anything that you need to change. Have yet to find a video I wouldn’t watch again or recommend to others. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks, will do!
Will a gas engine run off cooking oil and gas mixture
Thank you for this recommendation.
Sure, with enough gas. Like 2-cycle oil.
Simply put, yes. People do this a lot with such mix. I have played with it too. It does make a mess of the engine in time. Cleanable but messy.
dirty ford101 diesel will run just fine , you have to start with diesel and stop with diesel or the fuel injector will jam when the cooking oil cools down and becomes think ......... , you will also need fuel tank heater to keep the oil warm and yes it will run with used cooking oil just make sure that it is not dirty (should not contain big enough particles to clog the fuel line or injectors)
Will a engine run on parts washer fluid?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Yes let's do this one! +projectfarm
This would be a good one for a diesel engine. With (really) old formulations of the stuff. New stuff wouldnt burn by design. To bad he doesnt have any of those.
No it will not, it will die from vaporlock. *edit Hydrolock, sorry :)
wolvenar he has a tractor
You made a bong for your lawnmower😂
The vapor setup ran amazingly well! I take it you did another video on running gas on vapor?! I'll go look for it, I wonder how it compares efficiency wise, afr changes, better/worse mixture in the combustion chamber etc. Neat stuff man this channel has hours and hours of awesome information!! You can't trust manufactures, or most groups that review products, what a gift to have someone doing all sorts of tests and showing real results!!
Thank you. Yes, the engine ran on gas vapors but with only minimal fuel efficiency gains.
Some kind of diesel additive(s) mixed with gasoline maybe?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Hope you weren't breathing too much of that stuff mate. Benzenes in most forms are pretty toxic.
Yeah, Project Farm mentioned that at the start of the video. Could also try running on freon while it is still available, but burning freon can be deadly because of phosgene gas (mustard gas) produced!
ojars zvaigzne Freon won’t burn as fuel I even vented some into the intake manifold of a diesel before it was illegal to vent and all it did was make a little phosgene in the exhaust and then engine shut off from lack of oxygen seconds after
ojars zvaigzne but with Freon only there’s no way it would burn
Another great vid mate. Looks like it runs lean after checking the spark plug. But it still works.
Also probably won't be getting the upper cylinder lubricated like petrol provides.
Cheers mate 👍
Great point and thanks for the positive comment. Cheers
Glad to see I'm not the only one who starts my small engines with a drill, sans pull starter. I do this with my generator when we lose power. Very convenient IMO. Great videos!
Thank you very much!
Have you run an engine using gasification of wood?
Not yet, but I plan to do so soon. Thank you for this recommendation.
Project Farm Been telling people about your channel, especially the engine destruction tests of oil additives.
North Korea has been using wood gas to power vehicles for some time.
nighthawkinlight has a great video on that subject!
Jeffrey Beyer great idea. Never thought of that.👍
Ya always use a good Briggs motor; never see ya mess with those crap tecumseh motors
Love it!
Thank You
Briggs motors are mostly plastic now and disposable
Canola in the crank case
Thank you for this recommendation.
I am following your shows from Europe. Congratulations for the working method and for the intellectual honesty of yours. My appreciation for your efforts and for the the way you conduct the technical tests, reviews and presentations.
Thank you for the positive comment!
Will an engine run on Axe body spray... Or any other aerosol
Thank you for this recommendation.
How about running the see through eingine on gas vapors
Thank you for this recommendation.
Would love to see this!!! Then you could see the difference in burn from the air fuel mixture, that would be a great learning experience!!!
Project Farm please test NMF (No more friction) it's a oil additive that semis are starting to run. Heard extremely good things about it. Amazon has it 44$ 175 5* reviews. It's like the messiah of motor oil we all been waiting for. Cleans all carbon and particles demagnetises for oil mobility is and reduces friction by about 30-40%
Did you ever try to run an engine off of lighter fluid? That would he interesting to watch. But if it might be dangerous, don't do it then.
Thank you for this recommendation.
Zippo fluid is essentially naphtha, so yes it will run. This is also the solvent used to clean printing presses.
lighter fluid for burning lamp (the one they used 100 years ago) or propane/butane? As the later is widely used in cars (or it's specific version).
@@drgrunn174 Gas will work without problems, but the lamp fuel is more akin to diesel, so you'd probably have to mix it with gasoline.
I love these videos. I always put one just before bedtime and fell asleep watching. There something terribly relaxing about them.
Thank you and hope you enjoy the video!
@@ProjectFarm did you really answer a comment posted onto a one year old video within 10 minutes? Man you really care about your community. Thanks for being awesome!
brake cleaner spray is cheaper alternative for "start" spray :D :D :D
Thank you for this recommendation.
Good Lord, don't use regular brake cleaner in a motor. It produces phosgene gas when it's combusted. Non-chlorinated won't, but don't ever suggest this....someone might make a deadly mistake. And no, it's not a myth.
@@SealofPerfection deadly mistake it's not like hes burning a gallon of it a shot of the spray wont juxt the engine or you. You dont know what your talking about
Yep, I've used for start up many times.
@@SealofPerfection Wouldn't even be a problem if you sucked air in straight from the exhaust, just not enough of it.
Will you do some diesel engine tests?
Thank you for this recommendation. I'm trying to locate an affordable diesel for upcoming videos.
Do you do a video every week so you can mow the lawns at the same time? :)
LOL! It seems to work well that way. Thanks for commenting.
The clear shot through the plastic cylinder head is very interesting. Keep it up! Mighty fine stuff you're doing. Addictive!
Would an engine run backwards if you spin it backwards and out the carb on the exaust port??, I guess theoretically it would, but it would be interesting to see.
Brian Reiff 2 stroke will run backwards. Probably would only need to change the spark timing.
Thank you for this recommendation.
jaj040 ha, knew i was forgetting a variable, It can never be that simple, never mind them
No. On a 4 stroke the valve timing vs the ignition spark timing will be incorrect and self defeating
Two strokes can run either direction but 4 strokes can't. Most 2 stroke snowmobiles made in the last 10 years you push a button to reverse the engine so you can back up.
E85 next time?
Thank you for this recommendation.
If there is a way to run the engine off propane that would be quite interesting
Thank you for this recommendation.
Project Farm if not you could try antifreeze or HEET if you have not already
Some gasoline engines can be converted to use propane quite easily, Ford offers propane conversion kits for some of their large commercial vehicles.
Yep. Propane and compressed natural gas are common alternative fuels for vehicles.
I've driven cars across the shop with dead a dead fuel pump with propane pumped in the intake
Always so relaxing to watch Project farm on a Sunday Afternoon!
Glad you enjoy it!
will in run on compressed air cans.. note i mean the liquid that comes out when you flip the can upside down.
Thank you for this recommendation.
PLEASE don't try it, it won't work ,also Please please be careful about phosgene gas and don't use chlorinated chemicals in an engine
DO NOT BURN THAT GAS 1,1 difluorothane is poisonous when burned, your lungs will hurt after inhaling that stuff, not worth it.
What if you used 100% Marvel Mystery Oil in place of the normal engine oil?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Yes on old style brake cleaner (very flammable) no on the new safe (non flammable)
I can’t help you but the only way I can is by watching ads
Highly appreciate your work!
Thank you
Will an engine run on atf
Thank you for this recommendation.
A diesel will.
Run a petrol engine on hot diesel vapors. Dangerous but intresting 😀
Thank you for this recommendation.
Did you get high off the fumes?
I got so addicted to your videos since a few days. Please keep those great videos coming . 👍🏼👍🏼

kerosene or ether ?
Thank you for this recommendation.
ether has been tested in the form of starting fluid
Kerosine no way it's similar to diesel
will an engine run on farts?
If you eat enough taco bell you could power the space shuttle.
Best part was when you used it to mow the lawn.
Thank you Project Farm, I've driven 25 miles so far no problem with break cleaner on my 2020 Mercedes SL
Thanks for sharing.
Will a Gas Engine Run on A1 Jet Fuel?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Used to work at an airport as a fueling manager, and no it won't. But it runs in a diesel!
Jet a1 is essentially kerosene with some additives
Its a "cleaner" diesel. They don't run diesel in jets because it smokes up the place like no other
People look through his video list before you ask him to do some thing I've seen comments for things his already don't don't waste his time like that and for all the comments he sure don't have alot of likes to this video

Daryl Gardiner hey brother
will a engine run on wd40
Thank you for this recommendation.
Yes.
Will an engine run on wd40
I couldn't run it on WD 39, but I rate your chances @ +1.
I can remember using WD-40 as a substitute for ether to start cold diesel gensets. Was not as good as the real stuff but it got the engines going.
I remember watching these crazy engine videos back when I was in school roughly 5 years ago. I still sometimes rewatch them because it answers questions I never even thought about :P
Thanks for the feedback.
