  • In this episode I give you a top-down view of how I pick up stitches around a neckline edge for a collar without gaps!
Check out this last weeks Technique Tutorial for picking up stitches along an edge: • How To: Pick Up and Kn...
If you want to knit up a sample and work the method with me:
Using a US 10 / 6 mm circular needle in a 16" / 40 cm length and bulky weight yarn, cast on 60 sts. Do not join to work in the round (the cast on method doesn't matter but I used a standard long tail method).
    Row 1 (WS): Purl.
    Row 2 (RS): K2, m1R, knit to last 2 sts, m1L, k2. (2 sts increased)
Rep [Rows 1 and 2] 3 more times.
At the end of the final repeat of Row 2 (a RS row), do not turn your work. Instead, with the RS still facing, cast on 10 sts using the backwards loop method. Place a marker and join to work in the round. You should have 78 stitches total.
Knit 5 or 6 rounds, then bind off knitwise. This completes the "neckline" sample.
You may place locking markers at approximate locations to simulate the shoulder seam. I did this by laying the swatch flat and placing them at the fold line - about 4 stitches in from the start of the increase / sloped edges of the neckline.
Using a US 8 / 5 mm circular needle in a 16" / 40 cm length, starting at one shoulder seam, pick up and knit 84 stitches total: 60 stitches along the cast on edge, 7 stitches down each neckline edge (6 using the Golden Ratio and one more into the column to close the gap) and 10 sts into the front cast on edge. Place a marker and join to work in the round.
Work 2 x 2 ribbing for your desired length. Bind off in pattern.

Great explanation! Thank you so much making a video from my request for how to pick up stitches on a neckline! Great tips - especially how to close gaps between the angled part of the neckline to the cast on at the bottom. I noticed in your sample that you increased 2 stitches beyond the edge - I think that helps also to eliminate the gaps and going doing a needle size or 2. I'll definitely try this on my next sweater. Thank you and very much enjoying these videos!

You're so welcome, Deborah! And yes, I do prefer to do the shaping 2 stitches in from the edge, rather than 1. I find it easier for pick up a clean edge. Thanks for watching!
