A dead head acquaintance in Canada back in 98 taped this for me on a cassette. I still listen to it in the shed here in Australia. Andy from Squamish are you out there? Andy had a massive collection of 100+ bootleg tapes at his house. Like many, he followed the dead around some years and even over to Europe. He told me him and Jerry met eyes in an art gallery in Amsterdam, but instead of going up to him, he just nodded and Jerry nodded back. That’s my only real connection to the Dead, faint indeed, but it’s something, at least to me.💀🎸
You don't get this good by "getting high," you do it with hard work and practice. When they weren't struggling with addictions the greats were all working hard at honing their craft. Don't waste time on drugs, invest it wisely and reap a huge reward!
Gerry was a classic and distinctive guitar player ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" This piece proves it - too bad he died from a heroin overdose- had he kicked the habit we would probably still be listening to him today. Thanks YT for keeping the memory alive- GREAT VIDEO. Thanks for Sharing
Peter Bussell he DIDN'T die from a heroin overdose, though the junk certainly "helped" things along, sadly. We ARE still listening to him today (maybe you meant LIVE?). And we definitely don't need UA-cam to keep his memory alive(though I, too, am grateful for the videos I can so easily access here!)!
I'm always trying to explain to folks that the Grateful Dead was the 'minor' work of Jerry. It's often difficult because of the fame of this one project. Jerr did so much more, all the time, for so many decades. His guitar, voice and style was heard and seen so many places, with so many musicians. Heck, I own five of his ties! As if many know he designed such goofy things. Jerry Garcia was everywhere. Wishing everyone would just get along together. Peace.
The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues Fourteen years ago, I began writing The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues. It's the only book that combines all of Jerry's side band dates and the Grateful Dead's dates together by venue. Alphabetically by state, there are over 1300 venues that include rehearsal, recording, performance, living spaces and planned/canceled show venues. The history of each venue is here including architects, builders, owners, opening night performances and other notable appearances, murals, statues, stage prosceniums, backstage areas, pipe organs, secret rooms, hidden tunnels, restorations and demolitions. Jerry's history at each venue includes the bands he played with, setlists, opening acts and other information giving the reader an idea of what went down at every date on every tour. In many cases via dated photos, what guitar Jerry was playing, and other anecdotal stuff that we love to read. I've added eyewitness reports to as many specific dates as possible. These are numerous, hysterical and heartwarming. Thus far I‘ve collected over 1120 hi res venue photos approved by over 900 photographers. I've utilized college and public library special collections, historical societies, museums, Flickr and others. There aren't any Jerry photos, I have photos of the venues themselves to highlight where he played. Jerry owned over 130 musical instruments in his lifetime, giving away most of them. It's all chronicled in a 300 page section called Jerry's Musical Instruments. Envision a two volume, 2400 page set protected in a slipcase, similar to an old bible. This is a book that resembles the records kept for medieval pilgrimages to holy sites. People will want to know centuries from now where it all took place...so there ya go! On June 3rd the Kickstarter campaign launches with a cool little video starring me, and Jerry! That's where you can get the pre-purchase discount. I need your help to reach my goal in order to print this fantastic book. If I’m successful the book will be printed and ready in March 2024.
Gris after all that still introed with 3 bars and you can just see Garcia just shake his head and pushes up his glasses and thus The Thrill is Gone> Tremendous as usual. South Carolina was here
Quite Curious how things worked out ???? Because 99.9 percent of people come back for more n usually hop on the bus and Open the door for others.... ✨🌹✌️💖🎶😋🌈💫✨
It's a thrill to watch and hear this great song beautifully/virtuosically performed by artists of the first order. Right now I'm going to find out who composed this tune - I want to know whether it originated with The Grateful Dead. Whoops! It was made famous by B.B. King, not "The Dead."
As a huge Jerry fan and a deadhead, I acknowledge and agree that Jerry was a master and was constantly working on other projects. However, the bulk of Jerry's time and energy was in the Dead, it was not his "minor" project at all. Just in terms of hours, it was the vast majority of his work.
@edelweissstudio if he didn't get a bad rap from non-deadheads, he'd be ranked higher. he's far better than the mainstream realizes. most don't even know he was a rather accomplished bluegrass musician before he ever picked up an electric guitar.
the thrill is still there, just open your ears.open your thoughts.yes jerry died of a heart attack doing what the good docs recommended...or prescribed.
@OneWorldHistory With all due respect: no way. The Grateful Dead was his major work. That's what he pledged allegiance to. He says so in many interviews. His side projects were numerous, and often very good, but he was first and foremost a member of The Grateful Dead. It's where he hit his highest notes of musicianship no doubt.
The Dead was not his minor work by any stretch of the imagination. Also, Jerry didn't design the ties. Othes designed them based on his artwork. Jerry only signed off on the ties...
"The melody is just whatever you want to play". Nothing set in stone, gotta love Jer.
Little late in time, been wanderin' around, never seen this take,...thank you, ...badass groove....
unbelievable - so cool to see these videos of great artists collaborating and talking. makes me want to buy a set of bongos and a mandolin
Enjoyed the beginning with the rehearsal banter, shows you how Garcia was running the show, really on the ball.
Two extra-planetary travelers, like comets, meeting around the planet Earth. Once in a lifetime.
Dude knew every scale and note like second nature, his hard work does not fall on deaf ears. Your a beast Jerry.

Getting high is the huge reward?
Smoking some sativa to release my inner creative cleaner, toilet is dirty.
Imagine Jerry's greatness without the junk in his life....
Orale.
Beat that playing. No way.
love watching these musical genius's interact

Get your facts straight!
Serenity Knolls in Marin County.
sigue Jerry siendo único !!!!!!
Two hell angels in earth
Jerry could play. God dammn.
David was Jerry’s best friend. He would come over to Jerry's house and play. It was Jerry’s joy.
I have never really listened to the Grateful Dead. I was introduced to Garcia's music via Old and In the Way
me too friend, my boys now too
Quite Curious how things worked out ???? Because 99.9 percent of people come back for more n usually hop on the bus and Open the door for others.... ✨🌹✌️💖🎶😋🌈💫✨

@lsailor in 94 it was 25 bucks! memory worth 25 million.
LOL "We're just trying to get into the groove- we're not actually playing..",says the Jerryman.
Peter, he didn't die of a heroin overdose. He died of a heart attack at Serenity Knolls rehab.

I just posted a take on The Thrill is Gone. I love this version!
Jerry!
free free - from the spell... I wish you well.
Kickass
Whoely smokes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes i agree!!
@leftasmokingcrater Exactly. That OneWorldHistory person is mixed up. The Dead was his only constant musical outlet. It was his home. Minor?!
I don't know how to classify this. Blues with a Latin / Calypso influence maybe ? Oh hell I'll just call it outstanding.
Which one is Garcia? South Carolina was here and there!!!
this my dabbin' song.
@edelweissstudio He died in rehab, trying to kick the habit...not from an overdose! C'mon now
Sweet
@edelweissstudio if he didn't get a bad rap from non-deadheads, he'd be ranked higher. he's far better than the mainstream realizes. most don't even know he was a rather accomplished bluegrass musician before he ever picked up an electric guitar.
