I had this played at my best friends memorial, at his request, in the middle of the ocean as we spread his ashes in the water. We had talked about it since we were teenagers, following the band up and down the East Coast in the 80's, early 90's, so I knew this is what he wanted.❤ It's an absolutely beautiful song...and a beautiful way to say goodbye or "see ya later"... And i think many Deadheads probably use Ripple in the same way...what a gift and a Blessing... Thank you, Jerry & Hunter❤😇✌️
I played a recorded version of Ripple from a Dead CD at my little brother's funeral over the sound system in the church. Johnny was not a huge fan of the Dead, but with this beautiful song, I could see there was not a dry eye in congregation. He was a church pastor, called to Glory way too early, and had a lot of friends. I doubt I'll ever have as many friends as my younger brother.
I was at these shows in 91. Changed everything. I was in the pit, after getting robbed outside the warfield, we held on tight to out tickets. man oh man what a memory! Never doubt the power of musical connection to further your humanity.
"Ripple in still waters, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow." The whole song is like a Zen koan; only gets better with age and a little wisdom.
There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. To be there .. virtually for this rehearsal, warm up enjoying the pure beauty Thank you for bringing Jerry alive to me .. .TODAY through youtube.. Thank you ..
I"m convinced this was written as a prayer. I read somewhere that JG didn't love playing it live most of the time -- felt it was too sacred to be performed loosely. If that's not true, I'd rather not be disillusioned. It's so amazing to be able to listen in on their work-in-progress chatter; "genius at work," literally. Mr Angus, I can't thank you enough for promoting it here.
I was born right during this show, I had no idea. I am Grateful for the Warlocks, Grateful Dead,Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way (Gray). The Dead, Furthur, Rat Dog, Phil Lesh and Friends, Mickey Hart Band, and the Many Others I don't have space to write. The legend only contunes to grow!
I saw him with the JGB band about that time. His bass player OD'd after the tour. He closed that show, it was in the Rochester War Memorial in NY, with "What A wonderful World." I was truly moved. I recognized a liberty in playing in this band and his solos that was different than his playing with the G.D. I came away thinking I liked his playing with this band as much if not more than with the GD. He gave his soul to us in his music for safe keeping and to share.
This takes me back. I'm in my 50s, got to see the Dead a few times. I also play guitar and once I heard this song I learned it in a day. Had to. Like Redemption Song or Yesterday. I had to learn it. There's a version of it that JGB does that's been played on Sirius that I can't seem to locate. It's the best version of one of the best songs ever written
I fuckin loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvv this song!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you lord for good music like this................................:)
So fun to sing along and harmonize with Jerry. One of the few songs that sounds good when harmonizing throughout the whole song. Often it is just the refrains that sound good with harmony. Jerry and Dqvid sound so special together!!
Ripple... If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You, who choose to lead, must follow But if you fall you fall alone. If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, da da, da da da da da La da da da, La da da, da da, La da da da, La da, da da.
I've always planned to have the tune (along with P.H.'s Lighter Shade of Pale and a few select others) starting at 4:20 PM on 4/20/20XX, to be blasting out at heaven's shattering Richter Scale 7.77 inducing volume, from four Sikorsky Raiders (each with two massive speaker rigs) Cris-crossing high enough above to deafeningly rock the world of everyone on the ground below from Palo Alto to Half Moon Bay to San Rafael to Sausalito while my surviving dear ones hand scatter my ashes on SF Bay from a party catamaran then scatter a trail of seeds culled from Thailand to Tibet and Santa Cruz to the Oregon border, from the boat dock to the memorial party restaurant... I guess I should probably start thinking about opening a go-fund-me type account maybe...
The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues Fourteen years ago, I began writing The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues. It's the only book that combines all of Jerry's side band dates and the Grateful Dead's dates together by venue. Alphabetically by state, there are over 1300 venues that include rehearsal, recording, performance, living spaces and planned/canceled show venues. The history of each venue is here including architects, builders, owners, opening night performances and other notable appearances, murals, statues, stage prosceniums, backstage areas, pipe organs, secret rooms, hidden tunnels, restorations and demolitions. Jerry's history at each venue includes the bands he played with, setlists, opening acts and other information giving the reader an idea of what went down at every date on every tour. In many cases via dated photos, what guitar Jerry was playing, and other anecdotal stuff that we love to read. I've added eyewitness reports to as many specific dates as possible. These are numerous, hysterical and heartwarming. Thus far I‘ve collected over 1120 hi res venue photos approved by over 900 photographers. I've utilized college and public library special collections, historical societies, museums, Flickr and others. There aren't any Jerry photos, I have photos of the venues themselves to highlight where he played. Jerry owned over 130 musical instruments in his lifetime, giving away most of them. It's all chronicled in a 300 page section called Jerry's Musical Instruments. Envision a two volume, 2400 page set protected in a slipcase, similar to an old bible. This is a book that resembles the records kept for medieval pilgrimages to holy sites. People will want to know centuries from now where it all took place...so there ya go! On June 3rd the Kickstarter campaign launches with a cool little video starring me, and Jerry! That's where you can get the pre-purchase discount. I need your help to reach my goal in order to print this fantastic book. If I’m successful the book will be printed and ready in March 2024.
With great talent, comes great responsibility! :) Keeping Grisman behind those smooth Garcia vocals would be a challenge, indeed! Beautiful song, great performance.
I played it for my dad at his memorial a few weeks ago. I introduced him to Jerry with Ripple back in the early 80's and he loved it. ua-cam.com/video/pHLcvIfCa7c/v-deo.html

guys, just have peace and an open mind, especially on a grateful dead song, smoke a bowl, both of you, then your mind will open up and you will be at peace within and without
Me too man....Its because your what they call.....a REAL deadhead.....and the song is simply beautiful...so ....let it do what it does to ya.....thats what they wanted it to do.......
jesus christ Grissman with the fuckin mandolin its almost like will Ferrel with the cowbell he's like NOTICE ME!! and in his head he hears Christopher Walken saying I NEED MORE MANDOLIN!!!!
Could be. Hard to tell since he is blocked the few times he is in camera view. I met him a couple of years ago. Really nice guy. Any chance it could be Dave Nelson?
Hi Cathy, I'm writing The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues and looking for first hand memories/eye witness accounts for specific dates. Please email me at slipnut01@gmail.com
I'm not a Deadhead, but Jerry Garcia is definitely a "great souled one" as they say about Gandhi. If anyone thinks white people don't have "soul in their music" as do Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and many other, have a listen to this hippie out of the San Francisco Bay Area. He just screams "guru".....
Wolff Bachner If you listen to any interviews with Jerry Garcia......he sounds like a guru. He was brilliant, kind, was a great story teller and had a wonderful philosophy......peace, love and the brotherhood of man. He was also extremely funny. When he talks about the Grateful Dead, Neal Cassidy, Ken Kesey, Palo Alto and San Francisco in the 1950s and 1960's, he speaks of such things as playing music for one minute at the Acid Tests and then quitting because the band was so high. At the very least, I would say that Jerry Garcia was interested in sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.....
+Black Angel I heard Jerry once say in an interview that he liked anything that "enhanced the human experience" and that he didn't think he'd have time for all the things he could potentially like in this lifetime. Who could be mad at that? Keep truckin
Check out Grateful Dawg. There's much discussion on how and Why the work well together. Being polar opposites at times, can only enhance their duo likeness.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Speaks to the soul.
Amen.
Absolutley!
Yes.Beautiful ,awesome song. 🕊🕊🕊🌻🌻🌻❤❤❤
Indeed.

This song is always playing in my head, especially the line: "If I knew the way, I would take you home."
One of my all-time favorite songs
This is one of my favorite songs to play especially around a campfire with everyone singing truly a masterpiece
Played this at my husband's funeral 8 years ago. Still hard to listen to, but how hauntingly beautiful.
CuzKatieSays
Cuz Katie, I've heard this song is based on Psalm 23, very appropriate and beautiful for your husbands funeral.peace to you.

Why do I get so emotional still? Always timeless and relevant.....

My heart is full but always room for one more song. ✌🏽
Every performance is a rehearsal for therse guys. Love their rehearsals!!!!!
Yes! Just like sitting on the porch rocking with a cold one
The magic of two gray heads
I saw him with the JGB band about that time. His bass player OD'd after the tour. He closed that show, it was in the Rochester War Memorial in NY, with "What A wonderful World." I was truly moved. Bassit John Kahn died after Jerry passed; in 1996.
I was there in Rochester (‘91) special venue, special show…
The best song that Robert Hunter ever wrote........he was a true legendary songwriter for our time...
This takes me back. I'm in my 50s, got to see the Dead a few times. I also play guitar and once I heard this song I learned it in a day. Had to. Like Redemption Song or Yesterday. I had to learn it. For me sitting in a nice chair, sipping a nice drink, and watching this would be my heaven.
Sweet singing. Love to have this melody in my mind.
damn Jerry's guitar has the perfect sound.
I fuckin loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvv this song!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you lord for good music like this................................:)
Harmonious doesn’t say enough.truly takes me to a blissful realm.
So fun to sing along and harmonize with Jerry. One of the few songs that sounds good when harmonizing throughout the whole song. Often it is just the refrains that sound good with harmony. Jerry and Dqvid sound so special together!!
They were friends...and I love that, for it made the music so much more fun,
Makes my heart happy 💜
Nice. Great posts!!! Absolutely love the candid stage chatter. Beautiful music. Music is the best.
Good to se David and Jerry play together. In this classic song RIPPLE.
So glad for the internets. My tape collection got chewed up years ago
😢
Happy 80th birthday Jerry.
Ripple...
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.
There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
You, who choose to lead, must follow
But if you fall you fall alone.
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.
La dee da da da,
La da da da da,
Da da da, da da, da da da da da
La da da da,
La da da, da da,
La da da da,
La da, da da.
I plan to perform a version of "Ripple" for my wake

Extraordinary, but maybe not for JG. Wish I had seen them live.
Me too.
Great pickin all round,I thought the guitar was a little jumpy, otherwise lovely sound. Thanks.
cool day
Jerrys fighting it the whole way, lol... mix is too thick, too much grissman
There are TWO mandolins on this. The Griss and the dude in back.
I could barely hear Jerry sing 🤷🏼♂️
2 beards on a feather..god bless ya, may the wind always be behind ya Jerry.
musicismagic “two beards on a feather” lo-o-o-o-o-o-Ove it my dear😌
This one's got two mandolins on it.
Can't always remember the words
+Dan Eadie yet we hear all our hearts filled with the breath of song.
One of the most psychedelic songs I've ever heard.
loved jerry, seemed like he was druged up
Who is the second mandolin player behind the drum set?
Joe Craven?
Could be. Hard to tell since he is blocked the few times he is in camera view. I met him a couple of years ago. Really nice guy.
Any chance it could be Dave Nelson?
oops! Jerry!!! .. forgettin the lyrics D'OH! lol

Sounds like you are a Dead head...
Grismans mandolin is way too bright in this mix....
wait... who are these guys? oh never mind they were in Deliverance right?
DG at times did not serve the music at hand but rather inserted himself. Love his playing but sometimes you have to sit in the back seat.
grisman plays a wonderful mandoline but has a ego like a mountain
takes himself way too serious
Check out Grateful Dawg. There's much discussion on how and Why the work well together. Being polar opposites at times, can only enhance their duo likeness.
Too much mandolin. It's over powering and too loud. Should have been like studio version on American Beauty.
Smile when you say that.
I like grisman on this recording...
Jerry seems sad here.
