Trouble Getting Your Thread Started Up Your Guide Foot Ramp? This Video May Help You Figure Out Why!

  • Most people starting out in rod building have trouble getting the thread to climb up the guide foot ramp. This is usually because the grind is not correct on the ramp.
We have to grind the angle down on the ramp of the guide foot and we will need the thickness of the guide foot at the point of the ramp to be thinner than the thickness of the thread we're using.
This sounds easy enough, but it's actually a little more complicated than that.
I hope this video helps someone out with getting their guide wraps started up the guide foot ramps!

Pretty god stuff, of note, after grinding end down on guide, make sure to round your edges, rubbing them with a metal rod works pretty well, this prevents them form cutting the inside of the thread when they come under high tension during a long fight, do it from above though you don't want to increase clearance under the toe. Another trick is to seat the guide {as he illustrated with a band} then before wrapping put a light coat of clear hard sealer {let dry} on the lead in finishing the taper even finer.

Great tips! Thanks heaps, I have been sanding down but I don't think I've had the angle quite right.
    Never again haha

If you have a new guide that hasn't been sanded down, take a look at the tip and see if it is more ball shaped than pointed. If it is more rounded over at the tip, you will probably need to grind it back far enough to get the front of the point at a 90° angle to the bottom of the foot before you start grinding the angle into it. I hope that makes sense.

@@TheFishingHobby makes sense, and a great video thanks. I need a small bench grinder anyway so another justification to purchase one hahaha cheers

I'm not sure what is easily available to you in New Zealand, but I use these very inexpensive diamond grinding wheels in my lathe. I would imagine they would also work well in a drill because I do not run them at very high RPMs at all (as round 600). www.harborfreight.com/large-diamond-rotary-grinding-wheel-set-4-piece-69658.html
You may be able to find some on bangood or similar websites that ship to NZ.

I appreciate that. I was nervous about making the change thinking it may be too much of a distraction...but it is a huge timesaver. Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. It is hard to get things quiet enough to record audio at times and then I have to spend hours editing out my uhs and ums haha! I may go back to doing my own voiceovers, but I wanted to give this a shot and see what people think about it.
