I forgot to mention, that with the thumb-over-the-top technique, not only the top F# melody note will be conveniently ready for playing, but also the thumb will conveniently mute the 5th string so overall sound would stay clean. Learn using the thumb like this, it's worth it.
Love this song , it has a lot of emotions going on with the demise of the miners here in the uk, they got shafted pun intended , you play so well even mk would be proud 👍👍
Hi Pavel!! Always tried this song trying to do the high note lick and the bass part with just my first finger... But it's too busy...!! So trying your advice with the thumb... Sure it will be easier but just trying to beat the habit I've developed over about 35 years!! Love the water of life lesson..... Come over to UK for an open mic when you can!!! B-)
Marbletown sounds good. But how about Boom Like That? That one is not that hard but it has a couple of cool solos which are tricky. Keep up the good work. Every song you do is awesome!
Thanks a lot for doing this one Pavel, i was waiting for this one to make its way into the songbook! And another Dire Straits mystery solved! And a question for you if you dont mind. Do you have any suggestions for hand positioning or even stretches to make the thumb method easier? I can use my thumb while holding the bm chord but when the index finger comes down I intuitively move my thumb back towards the back of the guitar. Ive watched and rewatched your video a few times and it looks like your thumb stays in place (at the side of the fretboard) instead of moving, even when the index comes down. In fact in the video it looks like you could even barre the low E string withbur thumb while the index is in place over the other 5... I know you specifically said hand size doesnt matter lol, but as someone with small hands...I just cannot seem to get my index to stretch over and up enough whilst holding the chord with thumb, ring and middle fingers... Do you have any suggestions or is it just a flexibilty thing that comes with time?
I second Berk, In the sky is so underrated...I have just found cover from Paulo Nava (with my comemnt from 4 moths ago). Paulo has got only 29 views in over two years, what's wrong with people? And even for me the sax part went unappreciated in original for quire a while. 'Even' for me bexause my son is playing sax and we have Selmer Alto around. But you don't have to deal with saxophone part ;-)
@@Martiny-t5sLook! The bass stops during the lick but it need to continue? Look at the thumb 4:35 The boon boom boom boom boom stops for a second during the lick. Maybe I am too picky. Again huge fan!!

But with the thumb over we do not touch the 5th string or do we?
This is gold dust. Thanks Pavel!
Thank you Pavel !!!
Bravo 👏

Muchas gracias, capo! Soy medio malerva para la viola, pero me voy a poner las pilas. Esta canción es un temazo!!

This is really awesome man. Could you do an tutorial of Marbletown?
Thank you! Marbletown is one of the next for sure. Some complex stuff right there.

Great job. That's a dedication. Bravo.
When "Back To Tupelo" and "Silvertown Blues", Pavel?
Maybe one of the next! Who knows, I usually came up with an idea for a lesson just 2-3 days before an actual recording.
I see. Well then, when and what, whatever happens, happens.

I've got pretty much same problem here as yours, though my fingers are pretty long. Maybe it's just the matter of practice

In the sky please!!!
Would love to! Trying to figure out what to say about this one.

In the Bm the bass is 5 and 6 the entire time?
It alternates! But pretty much yes, I hold Bm/F# the entire time with my thumb.
@@PavelFomenkovThank you!!
Your voice sounds like Mark Knopfler.
I’m not even trying. If it is, its natural.
Look again… you seem to stop the BASS for 2 seconds when you do the lick!! Ecample after the grass so green… 0:23
No dude... what
