I find it fascinating that so many people talk about the original as if it was a solo....it wasn't, it was a duet. And the harmonies made it stick together. Much like this one.
He has said in his "How I arrange music" video he picks a song, listens to the original and then finds all the covers he can so he can figure what can he add to it to make it his own.
Same for me: Geoff is my favorite Bass singer and Sound of Silence is one of my favorite songs. And this cover made it right into my favorite list of Geoff's song. It is so beautifull and unique.
Something literally just occured to me. Between classes, rehearsals, travel., performances and everything else it is amazing you have time to do these videos on top of everything else you have going on in your life.
I think you can pretty much predict which note he's singing by what hand gesture he uses. CAN he sing without the gestures? LOL - I don't mind, but it's definitely work a chuckle.
Geoff absolutely killed it with this one! I'd love to see him, Avi, and Tim get together and do an epic base cover of something(if it hasn't happened already).
Most of the covers we get of this have a faster cadence, such as the PTX, the Disturbed and the original. I love the fact that Geoff slowed it down, so much that it sounds like he's directing the song at a personal level, right to the listener. Disturbed's cover is more about the anger directed at those who didn't listen, where Geoffs cover is the one that pulls the listener aside, to 'explain' how life really works. I love ALL the different covers of this song. Of course, after hearing this I'd assume that this back up group are the 4 Geoffs from Shenandoah, 16 tons and others
He has a Gorgeous Voice. Deep and sexy. Lol....his solos are sweet ......love his redemption of Elvis Presley's way on down? And Country Roads by Jong Denver is beautiful too. 😊👍
I just wanted to let you know that it's been about a year since I visited your channel, and you've really bumped up the quality of your production. You can tell you've put in a lot of work into your delivery and the cleaner, professional presentation of the video. Really great work! This was a great reaction and looking forward to being an active subscriber again!
VoicePlay "Valhalla calling" is amaaazing! Not only you get it on your mind the video production is great AND for last...their voices are just a PERFECT blend for the genre!
Geoff is just amazing was listening without headphones saw you react at the start was like what did I miss grabbed headphones and rewound my goodness that hum at the start with the piano WOW then the e hit and your face said it all.dang he can sing
I loved your reaction to Geoff's version of this song. When I first heard it I thought of it as completely different feeling to the other versions I knew. I've been hanging out on this planet for quite a while now and have seen a lot of things (both good and bad), and loved the original and so had to listen to covers by artists that I already liked. Each one seems to bring its own emotions to the song. Simon and Garfunkel - This to me seemed to be a warning of where we were heading unless we did something about it Disturbed - To me this was anger that we allowed the warning to go unheeded and let it happen Pentatonix - I saw this as sorrow that we allowed it to happen as well as hope that maybe we could fight back and still turn it around Geoff Castellucci - To me this seems to fell like maybe we failed on turning it around and are standing on the precipice of the end or our society. This is just how the songs feel to me. I still haven't listened to the version by The Mona Lisa Twins (I'd recommend you check out their version of Wish You Were Here) so I'm not sure what feeling that's going to dredge up.
Yay. Im soooooo happy you are doing new geoff and voiceplay content. Missed the "what was that note" thing you would say in every video. Lmao. And this was a stunning arrangement. You should check out nothing else matters from voiceplay.
Loved the reaction Maggie!! I heard it described really well. The OG was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger, and Geoff's version is the sadness and reflection afterwards. Every time I listen to this cover, I cry. It touches my soul, and I feel like a am seeing the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Absolutely amazing cover.
You ROCK!! Thank you!! I am so happy for your support of bringing great artists to our channel and to be able to also choose cool videos to feature on the channel! 🙏💖🎶🐶
In guitar playing there is a saying that what you don't play just be just as effective (or even more so) than what you do play, this particular arrangement is a great demonstration of that saying
Always, always, always love your reactions. Every week I look forward to seeing something you have posted. But I have to be honest I want so much to see your reaction to VoicePlay's "Dream On" and "Nothing Else Matters". Both really shows off Eli's rock voice not to mention the ridiculous arrangement in their renition.
I do love this one - I could listen to it all day. He also managed to incorporate all the emotion of Simon and Garfunkel. Please do VoicePlay's version of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters".
As soon as you mentioned Lion King my brain put it together. This arrangement feels like A Phil Collins arrangement. That's not to take away from Geoff because I love it but it has those hall marks of 80's/90's Phil
The original will always be my favorite, but this is on my short list of "pretty close" covers, along with the Peter Hollens / Tim Foust version and The Hound and the Fox with Adam Chance. I especially like that very low rumble that just tickles the back of your brain.
I genuinely thought I wouldn't have liked it because it seemed like a simple song and because Pentatonix already sang it and made it sound glorious. But my expectations lied to me, Geoff made it sound ethereal enough and I enjoyed it.
You have got to hear voiceplay “Valhalla Calling” very Viking and I believe GEOFF hits a new low note! 🤯 At first I thought Eric Holloway was singing the bass line here who is an accomplished singer in the Octavist range. His voice is lower than Geoff’s.
I missed them, but his solitude just added to the somber tone. The one coming out on the 14th has his clones. It is so good, and it isn’t a genre that I usually listen to.
Liked, subscribed and hoping to see you check out more of Geoff and VoicePlay. It doesn't look like you've reacted to their cover of Nothing Else Matters yet, and that is a tragedy.
A really fine arrangement from Geoff. The piano and percussion worked very nicely. Only at one point did I have an issue. IMO driving "Take my arms that I might reach you" down into the basement struck me as showing off at the cost of missing some of the meaning of the song. 'Reach' and 'Teach' from the previous line need to be connected in some fashion. This is the protest against the blind blanket conformity that dominated US cultural aspirations at the time. Those lines need not be sung identically as S&G did. Kirstin sings the two differently. But there is a connected message there and what Geoff did (IMO) negates the second line of that pair. BTW I have been a major fan of this song since around Christmas 1964.Yes I am one of the 16 or 17 people (lol) who bought the Wednesday Morning 3 AM album on the first go around.

Nice reaction as always Maggie. I will be surprised if you see this request but I would really super love it if you could react to Angelica Hale singing a cover of Easy on Me. She is 15 in the video and she is really amazing. She is amazing because of the health issues when she was 4, and due to those issues she ended up on life support for several days and even got Sepsis and lost the use of both Kidneys. Due to the illness she got scarring on her lungs and only has 80% use in one of them and scarring in her throat because of intubation. I really think you could never tell any of that based on her skill. Take care and keep on reacting!
Can you please react to Queensryche on the future? Songs worth reacting : Queen of the reich (live in Tokyo 84) Someone else (studio version) I will remember (unplugged 1992) Road to madness (studio version) Anybody listening (official video)
Okay ... I almost didn't want to watch this, because apparently there was first released a version with bad background. where the background mix was abruptly cut off multiple times and was horrendous. This mix was much much much better. He needs to track down those bad versions and delete them with extreme prejudice because unfortunately its hard to un-hear it, even when listening to the correct one.
How so? No shade at all if it wasn't your thing, but I always find comments like "could have done better" to be curious because "better" is so subjective. Many people love it or hate it as is, but it seems those who think it could be "better" are really just thinking it should have sounded more like the version of SoS they personally prefer (either the original or Disturbed's). One might not like his creative choices, but that doesn't mean it was done poorly or carelessly. This isn't a dig, I'm just curious because I've seen a few comments like this and it's not a criticism I understand.
@@maeco7 I think it is a great arrangement. I am just surprised he didn't belt the bridge of the song. Instead he just used head voice but we all know he can belt those notes.
@@maeco7 a lot has to be that this cover has been done to death already and i just didn't feel it like others did. it felt like there was something missing or that low bass for this song doesn't work for me
