Your homemade C-notch kit is far stronger than almost all of the commercial kits out there. Being boxed like that… solid. Stronger than original. As for your (Jess’s) springs… I’d have just removed that broken spring, as well as the one immediately above it. My ‘73 came with 4 leafs and 1 short helper. Plenty for something that won’t see serious loads. But hey, what’s done is done. Keep up the great vids!
@@madgingercustoms A bit more info for you: I bought a brand new set of Dorman springs for my ‘73 (shortbed, 2WD if that matters). I installed a DJM lowering kit, but the rear was still too high. So I pulled 2 springs out, leaving just 2 springs and the stiff helper spring. It rides very nice, but I doubt I could carry much more than a load of groceries (heavy dump runs are a definite no-go). I’m just about to go your route though - C-notch. I’m going to re-install those springs to gain back some load carrying capacity, and pull the DJM hangers off and go back to stock. It will give me slightly more drop, but also make the truck more useful. Anyway, love your channel - doing things like the rest of us, and doing it was a sense of humor at times. 👍
Sorry, me too , I'm with Jess , but then again, I've lived in the country all of my life ,and a low truck just doesn't fit the bill !! I do, however, appreciate your work and talent !😊
Get an aluminum driveshaft from a truck. Make sure it is longer than you need. Cut the rear yoke off, shorten to your requirement and weld the rear yoke back on. Phase as it should on a flat bench or work table. I did this years ago for a 70 chevelle. Got the driveshaft from a gm van. I have an vid on this.
@madgingercustoms let me rephrase that. Get one from the junkyard. I looked up my old vid. Got it from a ford van. 4 inch in diameter. I have 2 vids on this. 7 years ago.
I'm seriously considering the Bestarc you suggested in another video so I can use it with my JD's garage plasma table wheen I put it together. For those who don't know, you also need an air compressor to run a plasma.
Always liked the ranchero- elcamino look, but getting and out of them made me realize why I prefer trucks. I don’t want to drop down to get in and stand up to get out.
Just take out the broken spring and the corresponding one on the other side to get another 1/4" lift, or take out two springs. Add the air shocks. Run larger rims & tires on the rear. It'll be fine.
You have a steady hand while cutting with the plasma. Sketchy way to hold up the back of the truck. I installed 5.5 to 4.5 1.5” wide adapters. I installed Mustang 17”torque trust wheels and they look great. It’s an inch too low for me.
Truck looks awesome itd look alot better if you get rid of that rear bumper and put a bumper that fits up next to the body like it should have and it won't look so low to Jess
I like the diy, its a great video and process was sound. As far as too low, meh... Im not a fan at the moment. I think some is the optics and how those wheels look. I think with some better wheels with little more meat they will look 100% better because when you just look at the stance, its very nice. Great job, love the channel.
Congratulations! you took a neat old truck and turned it into a motorized skateboard. Not just anyone can achieve that. I'm with Jess, only you said not to be afraid to hurt your feelings. You didn't build this so Jess could have the truck SHE WANTS, you built the truck that YOU WANT. At least you admitted it, you are honest. Now about that square body chevy 4WD Jess WANTS.....Or can"t you find one Puddin or Mortske hasn't destroyed yet?
I watch these C-notch videos and worry about frame stiffness due to the loss of cross section. A simple bolt-on loop under the axle to bridge the gap would restore frame stiffness and not impede axle movement. Oval track sprint cars and midgets have used a similar arrangement for decades.
@@madgingercustoms The physics does not bode well for you. You took a 5" frame section and reduced it to less than 2 inches. The stiffness of a beam is BH^3/12. Where H is the height.. Maybe OK with a 4-link but with leaf springs, the rear shackle will be wiggly with 1/16 the stiffness in the frame rail.
Fire is only a problem if you have to call the trucks...🙂 and BTW you wouldn't be the first to fall asleep on a creeper..Done it many times.. the wife just hit the "panic button" on the keyfob...🙂
Way to go Dave you’ve upset the Jess. Now if you want to make it look better, shorten the box and chop the roof. Jess you’ll look good in anything that you drive.👍👍🇨🇦
Yeah I think she's right you owe her a square body Chevy that looks like crap I don't care what anyone says every lowered vehicle I've ever ridden in rides like garbage because you can't alter the suspension or ride height and expect good results every time
Dave, you did hurt dirty. All you had to do is take some leaf out if she's not gonna use it that hard for a truck s*** you can get away with. A Ford leaf truck or put a mono leaf out of a newer Chevy in it.
Dave, you're in the doghouse. You didn't build her truck you made that for yourself, Dave. In most trucks have raked to him even if it's only three inches four inches
- Jess is right, it's too low. I have never understood why people want to lower a vehicle. It doesn't make it look better, it makes it look worse. Especially a pickup. To each his own, I guess.
Yeah that's what I was saying, a truck should be something you have to climb up into. But this was at least saved from the junkyard. I'm sure it will grow on me
I live below the poverty level. You don't understand this 1 AM on disability. I do not make enough money to even wipe my a** with toilet paper. I'm trying to be. I'm not trying to get ugle i worked hard most of my life. I beat it to hell, 😂😂😂
Comparatively the recent plasma cutters are very affordable considering what they used to cost. I paid $750 for a used Miller 3/8 machine back in the day! Now they are a fraction of what they were.
Dave, you do excellent work. But, I never liked any truck lowered; kinda makes the purpose of a truck worthless in my opinion. I think Jess should have that Chevy square body with a little lift. That Ford is ugly now, in my opinion.
Have seen some guys find drive shafts with the correct ends on them (and long enough to shorten) on rockauto for cheap. Ship them in, shorten to taste, and go. Maybe an option if you can figure out an oem one to start with.
G'day guys... looking forward to this sweet build!!
