The levees broke in New Orleans in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina and the city was catastrophically flooded causing over a thousand deaths. This magnificent song makes me think of that disaster and what the people of New Orleans went through.
When The Levee Breaks is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics are about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. After the flood there was a migration north (Chicago) because there was so much destruction that there was no work and no where to live. A levee is a ridge of sediment deposited naturally along the side of a river by overflowing waters or it can be man-made to keep rising flood waters of a river from flooding a city or urban area.
There's always a teachers pet who can't wait to read this description to people. Let's give you a star. But, beyond the literal story, are you capable of unfolding the metaphors in this song?
According to Wikipedia, the flooding covered 70,000 square km (27,000 square miles) at a depth of up to 9 m (30 feet). It caused 250 million to 1 billion dollars (in 1927 dollars!) in damages.
That is Robert Plant playing the harmonica! They layed down Johns drum track by putting him at the foot of a stairway in an old English mansion so to get the best reverb🎶🎶❤
This song is gritty, raw, dirty; it's backwater Mississippi delta blues music. I agree with you regarding Zep. Jimmy has said so himself that it was four master musicians, who, after combining their talents, became an alchemical reaction that created Led Zeppelin - a new entity. Zeppelin is always a journey. For me, this song's heavy, thunderous groove carves furrows into your brain until it becomes blues infused goo. Thanks for the reaction.
I just recently discovered Led Zeppelin for me. I don’t know why I thought I wouldn’t like their style when growing up. I grew up with 90’s music so I never thought to even listen to them back then. I got into Pink Floyd and some other bands of my parents’ generation but Led Zeppelin escaped me somehow. And I can’t get enough of them now. They’re great. Just magnificent.
It happens to many people -- there is so much music - great music, but we're influenced by various things that pull us in directions - and then certain bands stay on the periphery of our lives until we're ready or open to really hearing them.
A levee is a earthen dam built to hold back swollen rivers so they don't overflow on to the land. Old blues song from the 1920s about floods in Mississippi. Millions of African Americans immigrated from the South to northern cities, many went to and settled in Chicago. It's the final track on their fourth album. Yeah, that album was that good. I just gave it a listen the other day.
A levee is like a dam, holding back water in a river or a lake, to keep it from flooding farms and homes nearby. WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS, MAMA YOU'VE GOT TO MOVE is the absolute truth!
The record was made in an old country house. Bonzo set up his drums in the stairwell because he had noticed that they had special acoustics. When the Levee breaks is a cover version of an old American blues song.
@@ohboi9578 In the movie it might get loud, Jimmy Page showed the stairwell where Bonzo's drum kit was. He says that he liked the special acoustics and the reverb. This is how the special drum sound came about in the title. The country house was called Haedley Grange. Grange. Here is the excerpt. ua-cam.com/video/KWI9bMe7gHE/v-deo.html
This song was originally recorded in 1929 by the legendary blues guitarist Memphis Minnie and her husband, Kansas Joe McCoy. It tells the story of "The Great Mississippi Flood" of 1927 that destroyed countless homes and livestock, and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, the majority of them being African Americans. Many African American families chose to go find work in northern cities like New York, Baltimore, and especially, Chicago. This is because Chicago was the transportation and industrial hub of the country and there were tons of jobs available in the stockyards and factories, and jobs in transportation, like railroad porters.
You need to watch “Moby Dick”, it’s a drum solo, and you will see he doesn’t hit that hard. He’s powerful, but he’s also mic’ed up really well. Levee is a cover of a song about the Mississippi River floods in the 1920’s, and the migration to Chicago from the South. Robert Plant plays the harmonica and Jimmy Page is using a slide. Have you reacted to “In My Time of Dying”? The live version at Earl’s Court is excellent. Jimmy is using a slide in this song as well, and Robert’s vocals are great. Bonzo, as always, is tremendous.

"When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. "When the Levee Breaks" was re-worked by English rock group Led Zeppelin as the last song on their untitled fourth album. Singer Robert Plant used many of the original lyrics and the songwriting is credited to Memphis Minnie and the individual members of Led Zeppelin.
Heavy Delta Blues Influenced by the original. Levees line the Mississippi River, when they fail, the results are catastrophic. When Hurricane Catrina hit, New Orleans had levees, which the storm surge broke, look at videos of the power of the water as it destroys New Orleans.
Bros! This is one of my top favorite Zep songs! So killer! That blues harmonica is soooo freakin’ good! But as usual, they all come together to create something amazing. Keep killin’ it!
Tool are another band with four equal persons. Adam started the band, and Maynard now stands - in concert- behind or beside the drummer. The levee is a wall of dirt and clay to protect a village, town or city from flooding.
As you say, this drum sound and riff is the bar that all other rock drumming is measured against. I love many other drummers, but The Mighty Bonzo reigns Supreme.
Awesome! It didn’t even matter that there was no video or even an album cover, because I loved watching your faces. And just so you know, a levee is an embankment, like a dam, usually built around a town to prevent a river overflowing. Can you please check out my favourite Led Zep song, Thank You and please do some more Queen, lots of fans want you to see their Live Aid set
Oh my God, I love this song - I downloaded it a couple of years ago. You feel you come back down to earth after you've listened to it - fabulous. Led Zeppelin are just amazing - what a band!! Great reaction guys, I love hearing your comments.
The drums on this tune were recorded in a stairwell. Guys stop what u r doing and watch Yoyoka's cover of Led Zeppelin tunes. Watch her cover of Burn by Deep Purple. Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, Good Times Bad Times and even Immigrant Song. Some of these covers when she was 8 man. Even if you don't record a reaction you owe it to yourself to listen to this amazing musician.
Led Zeppelin was a perfect example of something that is greater than the sum of its parts. All four were outstanding musicians, but together they became something off the scale. I never saw them play live, but I was lucky enough to see the Plant and Page "No Quarter" tour, with Jason Bonham on drums. It was incredible. I'm really enjoying seeing young people appreciating them today, thank you! If you want to try some other tracks, have a listen to The Battle of Evermore (LZ IV) (with the amazing Sandy Denny on guest vocals), The Ocean (Houses/Holy) (my favourite alongside Kashmir and this (When the Levee Breaks)) and for something a bit different Thank You (LZ II)
A levee is like a dam that holds water back. When levee breaks, neighborhoods get flooded. Catastrophe. Going to Chicago for work home since town is flooding
To get a sense of the importance of levees, you only have to look for vids about Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mississippi got the full wrath of the hurricane itself and it looked like New Orleans dodged a bullet at first. And then the levees failed and the water flooded parts of New Orleans. Many people died and others left homeless. Quite a few evacuated to Houston, Tx, and many stayed leaving New Orleans behind. In 1975 I was a student at the University of Miami and had a minor in climatology. My professor went on and on about the levee system and how much of the city of New Orleans is below sea level and that some day they would fail and people would die. So, 30 years later, that's exactly what happened.
A levee is a big berm that is constructed to keep a river from flooding during storms. Levees usually run parallel to the river, and are often right next to the river.
It’s an American blues song. That’s why Patrick “feels America”. Btw, Led Zeppelin we’re huge in America bc of their sound. A levee is like a dam that keeps water in or out.
There is no lead in Zeppelin. Yep. That is what makes them so great. Jimmy found three guys who were on the same level as him. Can't be duplicated and that's why the decision to end the band when Bonzo died wasn't even a question.
The song is inspired by an old Delta blues number. The levees were on the Mississippi to prevent flooding. There was a big agricultural industry, cotton and other things around there, and a lot of workers, and share croppers were all around the river. There are some notable delta blues songs about the floods down there, such as Charlie Patton's water, and "When the levee breaks" by Memphis Minnie, and Kansas Joe McCoy. It was the land where the blues began, and Chicago was the next step because a lot of delta musicians moved there, and started playing electric blues.
Jon Bonham's drumming on "Fool in the Rain" is phenomenal!!!! If you read up on what he's doing before you listen to it, you'll be even more impressed. My favorite song of all time, by the way.
You were right at the start: "sounds like thunder," then later you said "Its a huricane; it's a storm." When the rains come and the levee made of earth holding back the water fails, there will be a massive flood, as happened in real life.
Levee is a dam which holds back water on rivers so they don't flood farmland or towns below them.Chicago was a town up north that was still hiring for workers and many in our southern regions went north to Detroit or Chicago for jobs.
This is actually a cover of a song written about a real tragic even in 1920s which cost many lives, mostly black. It has of course been given a big make over by Zeppelin! Robert Plant on vocals and harmonica.
The drum sound came from the "room" , which was an old haunted mansion in the English countryside. After the first three albums and heavy, non-stop touring, the band borrowed the Rolling Stone's mobile recording van and took off to this damp old mansion. They could, and did, record whenever they felt the urge, which was unlike the "studio" setting that they had on their previous albums. And Page, who produced, wanted an expansive sound. He wanted what it sounded like in a room. So, he and Plant would move Bonzo's drums all around the house, looking for that expansive acoustic. Sometimes, upstairs in the corridor, or in the entry way to the house. This fourth album is one of the greatest ever.

Outstanding harmonica Robert!!! Heavy drums Bonzo!! They all four are GOATS! Complete FIRE!🔥
A levee holds the water back. Like a damn, sort of.
GREAT Reaction, love watching these with you guys
Heavy Delta Blues Influenced by the original. Levees line the Mississippi River, when they fail, the results are catastrophic. When Hurricane Catrina hit, New Orleans had levees, which the storm surge broke, look at videos of the power of the water as it destroys New Orleans.
My first time hearing this,. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
I forgot how good some of these songs are, I get stuck with my same ones....🎶🎶🎶😎
Bros! This is one of my top favorite Zep songs! So killer! That blues harmonica is soooo freakin’ good! But as usual, they all come together to create something amazing. Keep killin’ it!
I just love this song !!! I think you guys gonna like Rock and Roll live at MSG as well !
I love the "Bonzo..." just at the start ... the man, the myth, himself :)
Hello Friends
Reaction Queen
Song. No One But You
hanks
My favorite by Led Zeppelin song..very haunting!
You guys gotta watch the live version of "in my time of dying", it's similar to this song but the slide guitar is insane.
The Battle of Evermore (same album) also underrated.
Oh my God, I love this song - I downloaded it a couple of years ago. You feel you come back down to earth after you've listened to it - fabulous. Led Zeppelin are just amazing - what a band!! Great reaction guys, I love hearing your comments.
I Just ADORE this song!!!
Pure power!
Delta Blues!!!! With a sprinkle of magic Zep's rock.
Production is everything, nobody outshines the others.
A levee is like a dam that holds water back. When levee breaks, neighborhoods get flooded. Catastrophe. Going to Chicago for work home since town is flooding
In my time of dying, by Zepplin will blow your mind, just check it out!!!
RUSH????? Love from Canada..love your intelligent reactions😎❤️
Yes!
So, 30 years later, that's exactly what happened.
the levee refers to the banks of the mississippi river in this song i believe.
Just imagine that rain coming down, driving driving driving, down, down, down going down with the water.
God I love this song. It never gets old. Never. Would love to see if you two can survive THE GATES OF DELIRIUM -YES.
Each of these men had a job and they each did their jobs with excellence. When they combined their jobs it was a masterpiece. Thank you peace ✌️
They never disappoint! Try The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song. Also Ten Years Gone and The Rover!
Julie's always is right, take her advice... Zepellin Goddess!
Jimmy didn't want any one member to be any more important then the other.
Levee is a dam which holds back water on rivers so they don't flood farmland or towns below them.Chicago was a town up north that was still hiring for workers and many in our southern regions went north to Detroit or Chicago for jobs.
Yeah, You Fill the feelin he put into His Drums. WhA!😁
The Levee is like a damn stopping the water flooding the towns, villages and farms. If it breaks disaster.
