There’s so many films such as Past Lives, the Zone of Interest, Perfect Days, Anatomy of a Fall etc. that I’m dying to see. From the movies I’ve seen tho, my top 3 is probably The Boy and the Heron, Fallen Leaves and Poor Things. This year has been full of all kinds of amazing films and I’m still waiting for many of them to reach my part of the world. Also extra shout out to Barbenheimer. Cinema is alive!
My absolute favourite movie of the year was The Holdovers! Just a really sad but funny, sweet, cozy, old school, and perfectly comforting movie to watch this holiday and winter season! I hope to god Paul Giamatti gets an Best Actor nom and this wins Best Screenplay. It'w the kind of film that'll make you laugh, tear up, feel good, and think "They really dont make movies like this anymore huh?"
Absolutely agreed! By far my favourite film of 2023
I expected films like Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, etc to end up on my favorites list of the year, and I also expected some indies like Past Lives to surprise me as well, but I NEVER expected that film's like Suzume and Godzilla Minus One would skyrocket to the top of my favorites list for the entire year, right behind The Boy and The Heron, bc aside from Ghibli, I'm nowhere near as big a fan of modern Japanese media as I am of classic Japanese cinema.
Those two films genuinely blew me away and made me feel a level of unbridled, unfettered, grand emotion that I don't think I've experienced in a film since Interstellar. and I've yet to watch Perfect Days and Monster, so my list might actually end up with even more Japanese films still. just an amazing year all around, I really hope Suzume gets nominated for Best Animated Feature, I hope The Boy and The Heron wins Best Animated Feature and Best Score, and I hope Godzilla Minus One wins Best VFX at the Oscars.
My top 5 so far is Past Lives, Perfect Days, Spider Verse, John Wick 4 and Boy and Heron (from top 1 to top 5)
Godzilla Minus One was also my favourite movie of the year followed by Past Lives.
Killers of the Flower Moon is by far the best film I've seen all year - perfect flow at an extremely brisk pace
I desperately need to see Past Lives. Waiting on my friend to be free so we can watch it together. Also, heard of this Finnish movie called, "Fallen Leaves" that sounds pretty interesting.
An actor in it also started in the video game, Alan Wake II. And funnily enough, that game features a 16-min, live-action short film that plays in a dark, abandoned theatre. It is called, "Yötön Yö" and it is actually logged on Letterboxd lol
It is one of my favorite things I saw last year.
Could you do a video on the Gormenghast-series? One of the greatest literary works of the 20th century, or literature as a whole. Love this channel, great stuff!

I love this second channel so much. Jake's got a great approach to reviewing and appreciating films that make me really respect his opinions. Even though these videos don't get tons of reviews, I always enjoy hearing what both of you guys have to say!
My favorites this year were The Sweet East, The Beast, Leave the World Behind, Killers of the Flower Moon, in water, Asteroid City, May December, Evil Does Not Exist, The First Slam Dunk, Cade: the tortured crossing and Godzilla Minus One. I also really liked Sanctuary, Priscilla, Fallen Leaves, Perfect Days, Do Not Expect Much from the End of the World, In Our Day, Last Summer and Magic Mike’s Last Dance. But the best thing I’ve seen all year (and I’m not generally much of a TV guy) is The Curse, at least the nine episodes I’ve seen so far.

Good list! My only hard disagrees would be The Pope's Exorcist (it was dumb, but I enjoyed it- in fact, there were a lot of horror movies this year that could be placed into that category for me, such as M3gan, Slotherhouse, Thanksgiving, Renfield, etc), Barbie (which bored the crap out of me) and Talk To Me (which left no impression on me whatsoever, though in fairness I was pretty stoned when I watched it so maybe I should give it another chance). My own best movies of 2023 list (so far*) would be:
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. Oppenheimer
3. Sisu
4. Saw X (it mainly ranks so highly due to how pleasantly surprised I was that it was actually good- probably the best in the entire franchise including the first one)
5. Inside (can't believe how few people even noticed this one, it's not a movie to watch multiple times but as a one-off experience it was amazing)
6. A Haunting In Venice
7. Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1
8. Infinity Pool
9. Blood and Gold
10. Dream Scenario
Top 5 honourable mentions:
1. V/H/S/85 (not as good as 94, but still pretty decent)
2. Cocaine Bear
3. The Last Voyage of the Demeter
4. The Marsh King's Daughter
5. Cobweb (the ending massively let it down, but until then it was engaging and creepy)
*I say so far because I have yet to watch Godzilla Minus One, Beau Is Afraid, Asteroid City, The Holdovers, Saltburn, Ferrari, Poor Things and Freud's Last Session, some of which at least I feel sure will eventually make it to my top 10 list when I finally get around to seeing them.
It was hard to find a lot of movies this year, most of them came to a theater about an hour away and I just couldn’t find a time to go see films like Dream Scenario, Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives, etc. I’m trying to catch up before the Oscar’s even though I won’t watch the Oscar’s.

I agree with a lot of your lists. Cocaine Bear I was expecting to be bad but I kind of loved it totally unexpected for me. Beau is probably my favorite of the year.

I didn't like Shazam 2, but I think Ant-Man: Quantumania was a way worse experience for me. Mostly because I genuinely love the first two (I like Shazam, but I liked the Ant-Man movies more probably) and it took out everything I loved about those movies on top of just being not being good and feeling like a pointless movie.
It's really hard to say what my favourite movie of the year was there were a lot of good ones. They Cloned Tyrone is my favourite underrated movie of the year though. That's a gem that was buried on Netflix and did not get the recognition it deserved.
Funny watching this as I'm going to see Godzilla Minus One at IMAX this weekend, can't wait! Still need to see Poor Things and Beau Is Afraid too.

Agree about spiderverse feeling like half a story. Whenever I think about it I only remember that I didn't get a full story. Kinda overshadows the presentation.

At least Across the Spiderverse had a beginning, middle, and end. Miles escaped the spider-society, but whoopsie doopsie there's a cliffhanger!
Dune had a 2 hour first act and 1/3 of a second half, then ended. that shit was LITERALLY 1/2 of a movie.

Some of the films I saw last year that I LOVED (no particular order, not all of em are from 2023) (also, I've DEF forgotten a number of movies I saw the moment I started writing this comment): High and Low, Cure, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Mother (Bong Joon Ho), Silence, Across the Spider-Verse, Mission Impossible 7, Anatomy of a Fall, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, 12th Fail (a Bollywood movie)
My biggest disappointments were The Holdovers, Eileen, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon. My worst of the year (in no particular order, I disliked or hated them all for very different reasons) are Cocaine Bear, Saltburn, The Mario Bros Movie, Poor Things, Napoleon, Five Nights at Freddie's, Gran Turismo and The Meg 2. My biggest guilty pleasures were Scream 6, Beau is Afraid and The Killer.
And these are my favourites! They are in no particular order past #1 and #2. I have yet to see Godzilla Minus 1 and Anatomy of Fall.
