- Unbox and teardown of an ASUS TUF 4090. I unbox the card, then take it apart to look at the pcb. Afterwards a quick test of the card in port royal looking at power consumption and quick overclock attempt.

When the TUF looks better than the Strix(4090), because i prefer a plaindesign over a clowndesign
Halleluyah!
strix 4090 is one of the ugliest by far
Love these types of videos. Full of detail unlike majority of the bigger UA-camrs who just say it has this much boost clock, this many CUDA cores, this much vram as if we can't see all that on the spec page. Getting a full tear down, comparison to Strix PCB, look at the thermal paste application and thermal pad placement, power delivery and overclocking performance is rare. Keep up the good work
It’s because they are sellers not really reviewers
Thanks a ton for this video. Very good info. I ordered a non OC for the reasons you described, and am glad I did. Great to see you are using a thor psu as well.
Alright my bad, you just answered all of my questions in this one video haha. Thanks.
Also 622watts? Holy crap
Of the 4090 graphics cards, TUF has a really cool design.👍😍
great thanks for showing the pcb. appreciate it
Thanks for the teardown! Looks like a solid card. It's kinda interesting that they used flat package SMD capacitors on the left side VRM , and can-type capacitors on the right.
Btw, the Thor PSU measures power from the wall, so it includes conversion losses. The power monitoring in GPU-Z sensors or HWinfo should be pretty accurate.
Good point. Thanks
I managed to order the same card, also non-oc, it should be by my side on Tuesday. The more I look review of the TUF the more I'm happy with my choice :)
how is the coil whine? I see ppl saying tuf models have it but probably varies.
I got the Base model... $200 extra for OC lmao! You are one of the only people I've seen running a 11th gen with a 4090.
It's my test bench in a case. I have newer gen stuff ofc.
I needed this video because I just got this card
I like how teh 3090 ti and 30 series tufs in general look but still decent looking.
Underrated channel
Keep it up
And some edit ideas from other youtubers:)👍
Appreciate it!
Hi JC loving each one of your videos as always ❤️, literally are like a godsend info for me, as I was lucky enough to get an asus Tuf 4090 non oc , and last week I was messing around with asus software gpu tweak III to tune for OC , getting +150 on gpu clock, 1500 in memory, with power target in 133% without artifacts in games, but I have a question for your vast knowledge Of this cards, do you recommend increasing gpu voltage slider to 10 or 20 % or even above that?
I want to know your opinión cuz asus gpu tweak III tutorial suggest increasing that value for 3000 series cards, so I Dont know if it’s safe in this generation or is more headroom for that, what do you think? Thanks again for everything you do in your channel 😃
I would suggest you go to 15 and see what clocks you can get. At a certain point increasing it further will not gain you any additional speed on ambient. These cards tend to clock max on air at about 520-530 watts. 1500 on Mem is very good btw.
Good video brother, I will shoot for a Founders when my time comes along
Great video bro
Thanks for the video. I preordered a Tuf card because of the price too, hoping it would have the same performance as the higher-priced cards. I am a little disappointed the Tuf doesn't have all the phases of the Strix, but I guess most of it is just for show and overbuilt anyways. I'm still deciding which water block to get. I hear Optimus is going to have the Strix/Tuf block out in November.
just get ekwb they will ship them next month
Don’t worry the phases are completely irrelevant these things are SO overbuilt. The cheapest 4090 from zotac is already overbuilt as fuck. They would be overbuilt even if the base TGP was 600W lmao
@@MacA60230 this gen is the MOST OVERBUILT ever.
Hi. Great video. Do you know what type of screw those 4 long ones on the back plate are? Specifically the one near the "R" on RTX logo. Mine looks *slightly* marked so was going to replace the screw :)
Ah perfect! Just what i wanted to see. Personally hate all the AIB card designs, I love the FE look so I plan on buying this card and designing an FE inspired shroud. Thanks to your video I can see its going to be very easy to take the plastic off and replace it with my own :)
Do you mean the pc 'board' or the whole thing?
What a great card love it!!!
That 622 watts is what's being drawn from the wall... not what the card is drawing from the power supply. Refer to the PSU manual to verify ! I have the same PSU and 4090 Tuf.
i have a founders coming super excited i have never had a top teir card
FINALLY!!! A reasonable man! I did the same. Spent the money I saved on an x3d for 359 on ebay new. Selling my 3600 for maybe 75 or 100. And 3080 for 5-600. Recoup a little of the costs.. the x3d made a huge dif in d2 at 4k max settings. Was wondering if my cpu was the issue and knew it was when I bitter up the 4090 with very little gain in fps… locked at 115 fps it peaks at 60% power and runs at 49/59 c base temp and hot spot. I like it cool in my house. ~65° or so…Just insane, at 50% fan too. Silent till 60 or so…
those tuf temps are quite better than the other models i've seen, msi suprim, gigabyte, reference, even aorus model too.
I have the gaming oc have not tried it yet and a trio coming. I will check it out soon, but yes it is doing a good job for sure.
Thanks for an excellent tear down! What size are the thermal pads? Look like 2 or 3mm?
Id have to measure and get back to you. Seems this is an area of interest. In the future when I tear cards down I will measure them
@@JCustom great thanks!
Cool. Card fits in the case when it’s open. Could it do that with the squid cable it (the gpu) comes with?
Yes just run it around the back. If you have a small case than custom cables would help the mess
Intents and purposes^
You taught me something I taught you something
❤
You said you prefer the Founders. Is that purely aesthetically?
I'm going with a custom loop as well and I was wondering if you could go with TUF or FE for that.
Wish you had a shot of the back of the PCB. Curious if the output filtering. If you have it apart again, please post some pics.
I expect to have the block early Nov so I will then.
Great substantive video, was getting tired of seeing nothing but 4090 benchmark graph videos from other creators.
love the scene recording instead of the screen recording.
This is the card I ordered. When I will get it I have no idea. All of the online stores sold out so fast, so it is a backorder. I am curious about you mentioning flashing the other bios, and would like to know what advantage that would have. I'm also considering water cooling it. Is there a specific one that would work best with this card?
So far I only know of 2 coming out the ek
And Optimus. I’m sure bitspower will release one and so will phanteks. It’s quite a bit of heat so I’m not expecting amazing results temp wise on water. Optimus might perform well but also might be quite a wait. As for flashing the bios it would just to be get the power/boost curve of the Strix which may or not even matter. Originally I thought I’d need to flash to get the 600w watt cap but it seems I may not need to given what I’m seeing in some games.
nice card, but its very wide! I've tried to fit it in LianLi O11D XL and with included power connector I can't close the side panel without serious bend of the cables, so I left it open for now. they made the plug to the card so stiff and 1inch long, I think, to prevent melting when bended . waiting for cable from corsair to my power supply because the plug is much shorter and it will be, probably, easier to close side panel. If I didn't know about cables melting problem I would, probably, put the side panel even if it made me uncomfortable to watch how it pushes against the cables. it looks like a lot of cases will struggle to 4090 cards not only because of length, but because of how wide they are, and sticking cables out of them.
Im going the same route, but EK block and vertical mount in XL case. Hope it works out. Also just make sure ur 16 pin CLICKS when you put it in all the way. 99% of melted cabled were proven to be 2-4MM out of socket. Even had melt lines over all the pins proving they were not put in all the way.
Looks perfect for a deshroud mod (no pertruding tabs etc. on the actual heat sink)! Just slap some some 120mm fans on this and you will have your own noctua edition!
That’s not much different of an idea than how the noctua edition was made lol
@@JCustom I mean you could just slap 3 T-30s on it.. would make for a great video. Did this with my asrock 6900xtxh and it`s almost like watercooling at this point
Do you recommend to clean the graphic card at least until the first layer without removing the paste. I have an open case setup but the graphic card Is the only item I’ve kept as it is I would like to clean it a bit
if only i one day can afford to get a gaming pc and a great gpu. i hear people here in norway had to pay 2374 dollars in stores on release for 4090 cards. cant wait for the day i can play with cards like trhis. good video. i enjoy watching videos about new pc tech (hw)
yeah I'm looking to buy atm in Europe, currently the TUF is around 2300-2450 euro with the lower end reference cards like the MSI trio and Gigabyte windforce being around 2150. roughly a 250 euro mark up on the MSRP :(
Might be the tuf oc. If you can get the reg tuf get it. It’s the same card literally.
They have high VATs there, so everything including a hamburger is more expensive.
did you ever flash the strix bios? also did you get the waterblock? I have this same oc model and i really am interested to see what i can do with it. I am having some stability issues with forza and a few other games crashing even at stock speeds. I have to have the fans running around 50% to help. my temps are well within spec and between 48-60 while gaming. I have not checked hotspot temps or anything yet. do you think i could maybe have a bad thermal pad on one of the vram chips or something not being cooled properly? I am tempted to disassemble it and check but hate to open up a card if its software. i have plenty of experience opening cards but its always just the anxiety of messing something up lol
Yes I did a phanteks block video where I have it flashed. A bios flash would not fix the issue you have. If your temps are fine (check with gpuz). You can try down clocking and check stability. I did have your issue before with a 980ti that I ended up having to rma
Hi, I’m wondering if you found a solution because I think i have the same problem
one thing to note. this one have 2x hdmi 2.1 ports. For people with gaming tv its good.
I have this one on pre-order. I wanted a founders, but best buy is not getting what they expected of them. They keep getting 3090Tis sent to them. I have a Tuf 3080Ti that i've been doing Deep Learning Toolbox in Matlab and 3d. My current tuff ran perfect with great temps for 1.5 years now.
That Optimus shade 😆
oh they got rid of the separate memory heatsink ? why... that was genius ! yea with the stock thermal pads they were cooking but I replaced them with high end ones and memory went cooler while the core stayed the same, not losing any thermal capacity to the memories because of the separate heatsink.
Most factory overclocking is achievable on most of the same model cores, It's more to do with the headroom beyond that point. OC versus nonOC .. It generally often depends, the cores are indeed binned and sorted. A lot of the people that are buying the top tier models are going to water block(s) and overclock the crap of them. Other people who are concerned about anything that may hiccup latency don't want to run software in the background to ensure that the OCs are enabled.
For the most part, people already realized that the 40 series consistency is very good and a lot of that is attributed to TSMC. Samsung was quite the opposite.
.. Also the power delivery of whatever PCB it's mounted to.
Had a camera go bust and got an insurance for it, then I saw I could order gift cards in the insurance shop. So then I bought a gift card with 9% discount and used that to buy a 4090 TUF.
So its superduper expensive, but I think maybe its still a good time to switch my 3090, as I do game in 4K. So the 3090 is barely quick enough for 4K max res gaming.. With 4090 it will have better headroom.
Other than that Ive been happy with 3090. But of course in the coming years it might not be able to run everything at max in 4k.
Does the 6 missing VRAM Phase inductor make a difference?
What do you lose from 18 instead of 24 thats on the strix?
What does the missing 6 mean?
They had this at micro center and the gigabyte, 1800 for this, 1700 for the gigabyte but the tuf was OC, I just went for this because it looks amazing
Which Micro center? The one on Tustin sold out in an hr
not likely to find it instock at MC at this point. I have 5 around me being in nyc and all are sold out of 4090s
@@thesos0 that’s where I was at, some idiot said they were going to use the sign in sheet instead of the line and so many people lost their place in line. It was crazy but glad I got mine
tbh if this is cheaper than he strix i see no reason to buy the strix over the tuf oc
JC, The plastic shroud, are those screw holds/standoffs that reach out to the board plastic? then the metal fan holder screws into the plastic shroud?
Basically if I replace the plastic shroud i need to include screw holes to it not just to hold the fan frames but also attatch to the board?
Cheers.
Entire shroud is metal. The oem fans are on a bracket that screw into the shroud. The shroud is then screwed to the pcb. I am not sure on what your looking to accomplish, but if it is to use larger fans you will need a new shroud.
@@JCustom oh wow so that's cast metal ! I thought it'll be plastic. Very nice.
Thanks for that info. I've designed a Founders Edition style shroud that would utelise the 3 fans and their metal bracket, in theory I want to replace the shroud with my own 3D printed one. It looks like the in this particular card the heatsink can remain bolted in to the PCB, is that correct?
@@JCustom Thanks for your video I actually managed to get the same card and deshrouded it and made a new one that is FE inspired :) you can see it on r/pcmods if you are interested.
The FE Edition uses 7950 honeywell pads. They should have used them as well here :/
thanks for this gonna pre order the tuf gaming from bh photo for like $1594 now since it can reach 600w
Did you do it? I was thinking about doing the same
@@hpd_hero no not yet they don't have a ship date and the strix has not been in stock since launch day so I have a feeling we will see it go in stock very soon so I will wait. If its possible I would like to get it from bh or newegg since I know I won't have to wait forever vs ordering it from blt shop
Bh is a gamble for pc parts. Often it can take much much longer than other shops.
@@hpd_hero no I ended up getting a msi gaming trio x but it can overclock past 3ghz so its good.
@@JCustom I was able to get a msi gaming x trio and its going past 3ghz with no added voltage just increase the core to about 260 just move power target to 106
If possible, could you tell me what the length of the card is without the shroud? or atleast the distace from the fins to the end of the card. I want to fit it in my ncase m1 while im waiting for the waterblock.
to the end of the heatpipe from the start of the pcb aprox 13inches
any coil whine you encountered with your 4090 TUF? Thanks
so out of the tuff regular or regular trio would you go?? the fact the reg trio doesnt have a vapor chamber makes me lean tuff but.... i'm not 100%
I just got the tuf 4090 oc a few weeks ago. Sadly at the moment the price difference between the normal and the oc is the same. And the oc version popped up in stock so I bought the oc version 🤷🏻♂️. Don’t think they make much difference between the 2 tho
Now the og version has a plastic housing and think it’s made cheaper? Glad I didn’t go that route
doesnt your thor II have the 16pin for the gpu? keep us posted if the strix bios is working gonna follow you asap if it does.
Does not. I’m almost 100% sure the bios will work fine just need updated nv flash
Hello,
my TUF OC 4090 is crashing with black screen and Windows Freeze at +1000Mhz Memory Clock.
My suggestion is that the Thermalpads are not correctly in contact with every single ram module.
Does anyone knows how to coppermod the Tuf?
I don't know how thick the copper and the thermalpads has to be.
Dont want to disamble my 2250 € card at the moment...
Thanks
Hallo can i run the card on 850w PSU when i do not OC the card in MSi afterburner its the same model but is OC ver. Thanks for help
I'm torn between TUF or Strix, i'm goin to custom watercool so which one should i get?
@J C please can you tell me the thickness of the Thermalpads?
I’m wondering what are the thickness of those thermal pads on the 4090 TUF?
Is it possible to take of the ASUS 4090 TUF's Shroud & Fan assembly without unscrewing the GPU Heatsink? I'm asking because you removed the four GPU Heatsink screws, but it looks like it isn't necessary.
Yes you can remove it without removing the heatsink
Hi,
I have a Tuf 4090 card which is working great but I've noticed that when the pc is off the red light which normally indicates a power issues is on.(not blinking)
When the pc is on, no light and no issues.
I have a seasonic prime tx-1000 titanium PSU, all is working well.
Any idea?
Thanks
Could be your adapter cable or your psu cables. I have had this with previous gpus tends to be a bad cable.
Any informations on the thickness of thermal Pads?
So I ended up picking up a Tuf 4090. I also have the Suprim like we talked about but on air my Tuf hotspot hits 95-100c when I run port royal or furmark and stuff like that. Even at 100% PL and not maxed. All of the other temps look great but when the card is pushed to full utilization the hotspot goes 20c over core. Should I repaste? Or return
Hot spot at 100c is completely normal , I wouldn’t mind to repaste it
I wonder what buying the OC version gives you above this if anything? In Australia the OC version is like $400 more.
Nothing. It’s the same card just with a diff boost base which means nothing. The gaming sku is required by asus due to fe pricing. The oc is what asus wants to sell it at. You will see the gaming magically disappear over time. If you can get it, get the gaming non oc now
@@JCustom Over here it's a USD$400 jump from nonOC to OC TUF. so VRMs, power phases, the PCB is exactly the same. it just a higher boost right? Damn what a scam the OC is
I got a question man, I know you use Furmark, can you run cinebench r23 full cpu load and Furmark at same time without crashes for overall stability test? When I run cpu full load Furmark crashes or I get blue screen on overclocked 13900 k ddr5 system, but if I run Furmark on its own and or cbr23 on its own no issues. What does this mean?
What psu do you have? If your crashing running them together its normally a power issue.
Hello.
The first part that you disassemble, the frame and the fans....
Will they void the warranty?
Greetings.
In North America no. It may differ per region but generally unless you physically damage the item, there is no void of warranty
@@JCustom Thank you so much 😁
The total board power is 620W but the GPU chip power is 550-600W.
Why do they add a 4x8 adapter if the card is not OC? You only need the 3x8 adapter to reach the 450W! Like Zotac Trinity non OC comes with 3x8 adapter.
Aibs really shouldn’t be playing those games. The fe is 4 x8 and the base price. I don’t have a 3x8 card but I feel it will use a 4x8 and draw the additional anyway (if not vbios capped) I highly doubt partners would alter the way the sensing is worked just to differentiate skus. I do have a trio on order base one, if it ever arrives I’ll give it a try with the suprim bios lol
Can you tell me the exact dimensions of the PCB? Thanks! :)
J C can you tell me how this tuff has 2.5mm or 3mm thermopads? ? because I'm going to replace it and I don't know which one to buy.
Thanks in advance for the info.
I own the same model and they used both 2.5mm and 3 mm thermal pads for VRAM and ICs, respectively. FYI I've replaced the pads and found little difference in the VRAM temps.
I wish they just sell PCBs and let the user deal with cooling.
What is the difference between the TUF and ROG Strix ? I know the ROG Strix has the vapor chamber and likely a different bios flash.....but is there any actual difference in the gpu that makes it actually better and worth $400 more ? I will be water cooling it anyway so the better cooler means nothing to me.
You get extra phases on the strix ( it doesn’t mean anything on a regular use basis even for overclocking) the strix cooler also performs better by 2-4 degrees( tuf is also a vapor chamber). If your watercooling you should only be getting the tuf
Do you know how much smaller the deshrouding makes the card? I want to put it in a smaller case
not enough so that it matters as the heatsink is not much smaller than the frame in length
Inno3d cards any good, just brought one, never had one before?
They are hard to get here in the US
Can you put 3 120mm fans on the heatsink if you remove the cover?
The original fan is smaller than 120mm. You could definitely make something to use 3x120mm fans but you will have to design a mount/shroud
@@JCustom im just talking without a shroud to get even better temps and lower noise.
How much does it matter between TUF/Strix/Strix OC if you're just gonna custom loop?
None just silicone lottery. Same for air tbh. The strix cooler performs better but no worth the premium unless you prefer the look
Do you have loud coil whine ?
The Flossy Carter reference
Anybody know the size of the thermal pads for the ASUS tug 4090?
do you have inductors(Drossel) noise? I have the same TUF 4090 OC and the noise of the inductors(Drossel) under load is very strong, is this normal?
I do not have that on the 4-5 tufs I'v had already. Noisest 4090 I've had so far was a strix.
The best 4090 vs the worst 4090 probably doesn't have much performance difference at all. This TUF at 500 watts vs Strix at 600 watts is probably offering nothing in performance. I want the FE but depends on how available they are.
Yeah I want a fe as well. I was benching cyberpunk with all ultra no dlss and rt on. I was getting mid 550s. So I think there is no difference tbh in the power pull
So there is no hardware difference between oc and non-oc?
0 difference
little information why you didn't show VRM, hot spot temperatures and memory temperatures
Good point. I will do so for the other cards if that is helpful
If you close case clock speed decrease. I had asus rog strix 4090 and i sold 2 days ago and i earn 500 euros... so eazy now i have buy a 4090 tuf for 550 euros less. Lets see how much i can sell after hehe.
Why would you buy an AIB over a FE? Because NVIDIA doesn't sell the 40-series FE here in Australia!
Can we import 4090 FE’s? Is that common?
@@legendhasit2568 - yeah, you could but the problem happens if you have to RMA.

Did you accidentally buy the OG Tuf 4090? It uses parts from the 3090 TUF including a bigger PCB.
by any chance you know the serial number of the fan for the shroud?
Not sure what your asking ?
@@JCustom it could be irrelevant. but im wondering if i can buy a replacement for the fans for this GPU
no coil whine a tuf?

thats the money game they play
what power cable aer you using for it?
I use cablemod cables non adapter. 90 degree versions or standard.
oc model was the only 4090 available, i had no choice
The oc version was the only choice!
I'm just not impressed by the AIB 4090's... very very likely to cancel my 4090 order and wait for 4090 Ti. I have a feeling Nvidia is artificially gimping the 4090 to make the 4090 ti more attractive toward enthusiasts.
I think there is some time until they have dies from the rtx 6000 quadro to use for GeForce. It also would not be much of a performance gain for gaming.
In my country this card cost 2750$ :(
They are all the same.... Those who got their hands on a 4090... They are all the same... except the founders edition. I have the MSI 4090 and it too overclocks to 3000+. 3090 to the core to be exact and +600 to the mem, 11100 mem. Stable. Until someone comes out with a new bios to unlock voltage.. These dont OC that great. This Card feels more like they finally had all the Software for the current gen master. You could unlock DLSS3 on your 3000 series card by doing some google searches. It be pretty much the same as like the 4070-4080... without spending a penny.
You're wrong about 4090 TUF-4090 TUF OC being the same(Just a bios flash). Chips are tested to see what they're capable of, chips that have BETTER overclocking capabilities will be made into the OC model. But yes, it is a waste of money for what you get out of it.
No one is testing these dies when it comes to these variants. Very often when this is done there is some type of marking on the die. You don't need to bin for 40mhz on a boost clock. Everyone of these 4090s will boost well into 2900. I understand why people think that way but no there is no binning for majority of models especially cards of this tier. Only cards you will see binning on is HOF and some of the previous KPES to an extent. Don't be fooled by the marketing.
@@JCustom Looked around for myself and it turns out you're correct. Would be nice if every tech channel was like you. Everyone compares X with Y but always fail to mention they're the same thing. I guess I need to be more skeptical in the future. (Edit) Thank you for taking the time to inform me.
But at a $200 premium.. Its a waste of money. 5-6% is stupid and pointless unless you're tryn to get some pointless benchmark score.
Does it have coolingpads on the back?
Yea there are pads on the back
No problem with a melting cable?
I have never had that problem
whats your water cooling setup?
For which? got quite a few.
The OC models have better binning.
They aren't binned. They maybe saving the better dies but not for these low models. You might expect it on something like the matrix but trust me no one is binning for 50mhz. I've had about 7 4090 asus tuf/strix cards now, best one is still a reg tuf.
@@JCustom you should make a video on it
Thing is, "who would be buying the AIB cards"... Nvidia doesnt have the distribution that the AIB partners have... yet. I know I have yet to see Nvidia cards that were imported into Bosnia whereas there were "a lot of" AIB cards.
Yeah it could be hard to get a fe in certain places
@@JCustom Yep, here in Japan virtually impossible.
