    I’m doing mine the same. I already got the monitor coming and have the controller board on hand. Found a guy on eBay doing frames prefabricated for that exact monitor and arcade1up cabinet. It was $50 shipped but that’s not too bad. Plexiglass looks high quality. I also already got the GRS flight yoke installed and just waiting on the KongsR’us guys for availability on their Starcade Launchbox setup that has all the rest of the later Star Wars arcade games and with the GRS yoke once I get their upgrade kit and an old PC to set it all up it should really be the ultimate Star Wars arcade setup that I always wanted. Also working on it with my kids so it’s become a family affair.

I'm curious if I coukd mod a 20 inch monitor into my maxhine? Sonce your machine is a okder gen Im not sure if yours originally had a BOE monitir. Currently I have a 17 inch BOE monitor and Im wondering which monitor could I mod up to a 20 inch monitor for the MK2 deluxe?

    Hey just out of curiosity, how is emulation for mk2 and mk3 on your pi setup? I'm assuming a Pi 3?
    All images I've tried had the old sound MAME emulation glitch. Was too annoying, so I avoid those games in PI, as I'm pretty competitive mk snob since I've owned orig cabs.
    Switched to regular emulation in PC for that and Killer Instinct.

    • @ArcadeSchool
      @ArcadeSchool  4 роки тому +1

      Works great on the Pi 3 B+. You may or may not need to reduce the volume on MK2 & 3, depending on what they were set at in the image. Every once in a while there was a small amount of clipping/distortion in the sounds for me when there were uppercuts, but turning the volume down to under 80% or so in the operator's menu fixes it.

    Hi and thenk you for the upload. I am looking to buy one of these and would appreciate if you know the answers for these questions:
    1. Do you know the backlight lifespan for the model or if there is an OSD backlight hours counter?
    2. Do you know the minimum brightness level it could reach? Today`s DElls of 300cd/m2 start at around 40cd/m2 minimal brightness.

    • @ArcadeSchool

      Awesome, lemme know how it goes! I actually ended up later putting on tempered glass and using poster board (with the same MKII insert) instead of the spray painted plexi, so check those out if you haven't already (ua-cam.com/video/z5GfLsrPqPs/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/n_FbFGK9gHE/v-deo.html). Love your channel by the way, Erik!

    • @ArcadeSchool
      @ArcadeSchool  5 років тому +1

      Also of note: It's WAY easier and more graceful to use posterboard for the bezel than to try to spray paint the plexiglass (or glass, whatever you decide to use). When I made my bezel out of poster board, I made one small mistake though: I spray painted it with gloss black paint. If you're applying a vinyl decal to it, it doesn't matter (you don't even have to paint it of course), but if you're going for a black bezel, use satin or matte paint, not gloss. Gloss makes "wet" looking marks wherever it makes contact with the plexi or glass. Get white poster board though and paint it if you need it to be a color, because black is the most expensive because they have to print the black on there, and white is the cheapest.

      Thanks! I went to Lowe's or Home Depot (can't remember which) with the old plexi/bezel and just had them cut me a piece to size. I think it was only $12 and they cut it for me for free. I later ended up replacing that new plexi though with tempered glass from One Day Glass online. It wasn't cheap, but I did get a bulk discount because I got a couple of them at the same time, but YMMV. Then, I made a bezel to put behind the glass out of some black posterboard. Came out pretty sweet! There are some videos of it on my channel.

    Do you happen to have a link on where you purchased the DVI-D to HDMI adapter? I cannot tell if the HDMI part is a female or male.

    I want to mod my MK cabinet but im hesitant about the button layout.. It's good for MK, but not for every game.. I cant imagine playing SF2 with the MK button layout for example. Has the MK button layout hindered your experience with any other games or has it been alright to play with?

    • @ArcadeSchool
      @ArcadeSchool  4 роки тому +1

      Once you get used to it, it feels weird to even play SF on the standard SF-style layout. It ends up becoming something you get used to. For example I prefer to play Marvel Superheroes on my MK cab because of it (and because I like the IL joysticks better than Sanwa).

    How did you deal with the sound? I have sound when it starts up but not when I play games.

    • @ArcadeSchool
      @ArcadeSchool  4 роки тому

      Sounds like there's a setting in the emulator somewhere, either Emulation Station or MAME itself. I'm not sure, I didn't have that issue with mine, but if it plays sound on bootup, then that rules out anything being hooked up wrong, so it has to be a setting in something.

      Hmm, HDMI to DVI-D should work, but you may have to set the input source on the monitor from VGA to DVI. It depends on the model of the monitor (not just the game cabinet you have, as they used a few different models of monitors even in cabinets of the same game). The model is printed on a sticker on the back of the monitor, and you should be able to search Amazon for that model number and get the correct result. Usually all the LCD controller boards sold on there have the model number(s) they support in the title of the product, so it should come right up.

It might actually be a setting on the monitor itself, not the Raspberry Pi, because the Pi is only outputting HDMI. If messing with the settings on the monitor doesn't work, then it might be a bad DVI port on the monitor, but at least the VGA works anyway.

      @@dragongamer2670 Theres the difference. Most people these days arent getting into these for collecting.. they want to actually play the games. The only other way to play some of these are was to go to the arcade. You say this thing will fall apart... old machines have components fail all the time too. With the upgrades, you van probably get one of these at 500

      @@dragongamer2670 You're projecting your own interest in collecting original games and arcades onto others. I don't want an original arcade unit. I want a cabinet that I can mod with a Pi, so I have 1,000's of games on it. That's what people are modding these for. Further---real wood, monitor, sanwa/happ joysticks, buttons, yadda yadda....these are exactly the kinds of mods that people are making on these machines. The only original thing left on my A1U are the side panels with the graphics. Why not an original arcade then? Not logical in my apartment. Only one game. And I can't customize it to my liking. Modding is a completely different hobby than collecting.

      @@dragongamer2670 1) You invented anyone here saying Arcade1Up's would be worth $1K in the future. If someone thoroughly customizes an Arcade1Up cabinet---it is no longer an Arcade1Up cabinet. 2) People are using Arcade1Up's to essentially build MAME MACHINES. 3) Those MAME machines (whether it's a Pi or PC) can sometimes be sold for over $1K or more, simply based on being built with high quality monitors, authentic joysticks, buttons, custom woodwork, using a high end PC etc. In other words, they ARE getting what they paid for. Your argument as stated is "Modded Arcade1Up's aren't worth $1K" The answer would be---no one said they were. It used to be a Arcade1Up. Now it's a MAME cabinet with $1K worth of hardware (or whatever value of components they used). And 4) Yes, you are projecting your own hobbies on to others, and you just did it again with emulation. You're not "telling me how it is sadly" with emulation, simply because I, and many 1,000's of others have used emulators for years, with great enjoyment. You're being the "Audiophile snob" going on about how vinyl is so much better than MP3's or streaming. Sure, but only a small number of people actually CARE or can tell the difference. The system that I currently use, I love....1,000's of games to enjoy, and play great. Family and friends love it too. Which is why I made a cabinet for it. Because it's awesome. Way prefer it over a single authentic arcade. Played both plenty. That's why I made what I made and not what you're talking about. Also got the original Arcade1Up cab on sale, which made it cheaper and far simpler than cutting/building the cabinet myself. Comparing modding and emulation to collecting and authentic playing is comparing apples to oranges. I also collect authentic retro games and systems as well. Not the same thing. Not even remotely.

      @@dragongamer2670 No. You're not understanding that everything you're saying is irrelevant. The original person you were responding to was referring to Arcade1Up's on the market, and they accurately stated: "I see modded cabs on ebay for $1000 and up. Stock ones $300 and up."
      Your response was:
      "Dude these machines are a joke. No one is going to pay $1000 for a machine that is going to fall apart over the years. Real Arcade machines last cause they use real wood and good joysticks and buttons. A real arcade collector will not pay for something that has no value"
      • He simply said modded A1UP cabs (which technically aren't A1UP cabs) are being bought and sold for up to $1K and more, and stock ones around $300 and up. That's just a simple fact.
      • Secondly, those modded cabs that are selling for $1K+, are selling for $1K+ because they are modded with the very components you just listed above as being valuable.
      If you replaced the stock monitor with a $5K monitor...it doesn't matter if you think it's stupid, the cab is now worth $5K.
      • Also, no where did he state that "real arcade collectors" are buying them. You inserted that narrative, and it's irrelevant comparisons to authentic arcades. You are the only one trying to compare the two. What he and you both wrote is there right above.
      Then someone wrote:
      "Most people these days arent getting into these for collecting.." (Again...referring specifically to those buying and modding Arcade1Up cabinets.)
      Your response:
      "Highly disagree! This is why - People are getting into game collecting.."
      • Then who is buying them and creating the ever growing 3rd party custom cab communities? The Tooth Fairy? Hulk Hogan? Just because these people aren't in your little world, doesn't mean they don't exist. Somebody is supporting this demand.
      People getting into game collecting is irrelevant. Other people are into MAME cabinets. That's who's buying and building these MAME cabinets. This is a video and thread about customizing a MAME cabinet. Not authentic Arcades and Arcade machine collecting.
      "Until you realize some games cannot be played that way or the emulation is really bad or the game doesn't play the way it was suppose to play. LoL!"
      • Why on Earth would someone build (or buy) a cabinet for their MAME/emulation system if the games they wanted to play didn't work on their MAME/emulation system to their satisfaction? What a stupid argument.
      "...modding something makes it more Valuable. Sadly that isn't the case when it comes to Retro Stuff.
      • Good thing this isn't a thread about modding retro stuff.
      "So yeah good luck telling the sales people on the Retro Convention floor that the Modded un-original games and systems you have are worth more?"
      • Why would someone be selling their MAME cabinet to a retro sales dealer at a retro convention? They're selling like hot cakes where people buy custom MAME cabs and parts though!
      "Yes people can mod any computer or machine to make it into a Mame machine. Duh! Does it mean it would last as long? NO!"
      • Modded with what? Authentic arcade components and high quality wood-all of the things you listed above as lasting a long time? Surprisingly--very long! (My brother in law's has been going 20 years and still strong).
      "Also again MAME cannot play every single Arcade machine correctly."
      • Who is this news to? You don't think people who use and build MAME cabs (or just use Pi's etc) know this, and already play MAME cabs, Pi, PC etc.? They're into MAME and emulation. Of course they know this.
      Have people been using emulation and enjoying it for over 20 years? Yup! That means thousands and thousands of people play 1,000's of games they enjoy to THEIR satisfaction (and they don't care about you or your friend's opinions). How about that! A whole different world exists outside your little bubble!
      And some of them would like to play those 1,000's of games in a cabinet. And there's a market for it. It's that simple. And that market alone is what sets the value. Not you and your standards of gaming.
