    I have always done the MARS mod on my radios. Radios are used to communicate and it is in my best interest to have my radios be used at full potential. As a prepper, we may need those FRS/GMRS and other freqs to communicate/organize neighbors/friends/family in effort to save lives and such. I have thought about doing MARS, as I served and love the Military and my Country, in light of recent government attitudes, i feel like i do NOT want to give them my radio capabilities, that this could be detrimental to my health in the future. It will be interesting to watch your journey into that area, if you decide to do so. PEACE

      Thank you for your service and for a wonderful well-thought out comment. I view MARS as an opportunity to move the needle in terms of my comms training while giving back to our great country. However, it will likely just be a one year commitment given the number of weekly hours required.

    I really like it because of the interoperability. Did this to my FT3D, and now I don't have to carry multiple radios for different radio services. For the FT3D, you just have to pry off the 0 resistor behind the rubber grommet behind the battery. It isn't clean as desoldering, but it still works, and you don't have to use much force. It's like Yaesu is telling you "pry this off. We dare you. Unlock the power of this radio." I hear it's exactly the same with the FT2D and FT5D as well.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 роки тому +4

      The modification for the FT-60 was similar. I used a razor blade with good success. They pretty much want you do it. ;-) It's too bad that the FT3D was discontinued and replaced so quickly with the FT5D. I believe it was related to component shortages. It's a good HT from what I've heard.

    I ordered mine, and I can’t wait until it arrives. I’ve been using a Baofeng UV9R Pro and GMRS9R and making good contacts on hikes. But the squelch is uncontrollable at times. Even though there’s 0-9, it’s really just on or off. Sometimes when it’s set to 1 or 9, it’ll just cut out while the transmission is clear as day. I’ve got a MARS mod VX6R on the way now with some Smiley 5/8 antennas for each band, and the barometer option. I’ve made an adjustable dipole for 6 meters and summit contacts, but the battery situation is a little difficult. Have you found a USB charging solution? Either a USB adapter charge cable, or aftermarket batteries? Because I just bring one 40,000mAh battery on backpacking trips for everything, and it’s worked well for overnights on the Baofengs.

      Thank you. Yes, they should be coming soon. I am waiting for one myself. I still have the prototype. It will be nice to have the production run with the shielded cable and integrated ferrite beads. The VX-6R is an older radio that is still relevant today, but do your research. For what I do, it fits the bill and is at a price point where I can have 2 or 3 units. Some are having good success with the FT5DR, but I have no experience with it and it's bit pricey for me to have 2 or 3 units if it's going to be my EDC radio. 73's.

      @@TheTechPrepper I hear ya. I looked at the FT5DR, but it seems fragle in comparison with the VX-6R. I've got an Anytone 878 (actually four...). It's a great radio and does a lot of cool stuff - like the FT5DR, but at a lower price. Still, the rugged construction and the small form factor of the VX-6R appeal to me. Like you, I often carry a radio when I run, usually a UV-5R. But in my area, its poor selectivity results in a lot of noise coming through.

      @TheTechPrepper  2 роки тому +2

      @@racerveza4904 The FT5DR seems fragile to me, too. The AnyTone 878 is a great radio. When I get into DMR next year, I will very likely be going for the newer model which has a more complete APRS implementation. I recall that the earlier models were little more than only APRS beacons with no ability to send or receive messages. If you have time, have you played with encryption in CPS for the 878. Curious on your thoughts.

    • @racerveza4904
      @racerveza4904 2 роки тому

      @@TheTechPrepper No, I haven’t played around with encryption. If you’re interested in secured comms, one neat thing it can do is send SMS messages via DMR simplex. They’re brief transmissions, and I don’t think a scanner with DMR capability would be able to decode them. You’re right about APRS. Two of mine are the newer version, and they’re able to do TX and RX, including messages. As you say, the first gen model basically just beacons.

    • @racerveza4904
      @racerveza4904 2 роки тому

      @@TheTechPrepper I just remembered - another thing you can do with the AT878II is to ask another AT878II to send you its location. This is done via simplex, not using APRS. Here's how it's described in the manual: "Ranging(7)When caller and receiver both GPS positioned, if the caller turn on ranging function and the receiver is within communication range, Tx radio will detect the distance and direction between two radios at fixed interval, and then show the information on the display of Tx radio."

    Very interesting. Any thoughts on the narrowband issues between Ham, MURS, FRS, & GMRS? In years past, I had two separate radios... a Yaesu FT-2400H (VHF) modified for MARS/CAP, & a Kenwood TK-805DH (UHF). The Kenwood was a Commercial Radio, but was user programmable from the face of the Radio, plus it had a VFO Mode. For lowland VHF, the Yaesu FT-650 & Icom IC-575H worked well for base radios. While I used a Motorola MaxTrac mobile, I'd like to try a Alinco for more frequency agility.

    Something to know about Yaesu radios. After you do the mars mod put the radio on a meter and check your power output. The Yaesu radios do not transmit full power when you go out of band. That seems to be the trend with Yaesu radios. I have had my Yaesu radios mars modded by HRO and GigaParts when I purchased them new. Every HT and mobile radio out of band high power was reduced at least in half. HT's had a tendency to tx between 1 and 2 watts. So doing the mars mod will reduce your power output when you tx out of band.

    There is no type acceptance or certification for part 97. If you can get a radio to transmit in the ham bands and meet the spurious emissions requirements, you're good to go. That's one of the great things about HAM Radio. In the beginning, I'm told, there weren't any radios built specifically for this purpose. Most if not all of the other services have actual type acceptance where the hardware must be certified for use with that service under normal operation. This is what makes using a piece of ham equipment somewhat problematic for use on other services save a few like MARS legally under normal conditions. Note: This is my take based on seeing alot of monkey poo fights over this issue and how I interpret the rules. I am no arbiter of truth nor the authority. Just my two cents. Great video, I do enjoy them greatly.

      I appreciate the support. It makes it easy to be myself and just roll with it. Recently, I stopped editing out the occasional adult language as there's no more time for these edits and frankly I let one or two choice words come out in normal conversation. In general, there's only one take and I just talk about my actual experiences. I picked up an antenna sponsor for the HF series that I'm kicking off later this month. Before agreeing, I told them: I only care about NVIS deployments; that they need to be field expedient deployments for me to consider accepting the antenna; that they will be compromised deployments given my location; that all I care about is making targeted local/regional contacts; and that I will be honest on how well the antenna systems meet my requirements. They agreed, so we'll see how this goes. If they make demands, I'll go just continue to buy the gear myself as I've been doing the last two years.

    pretty funny that I have all the same radios. Ft-60r/VX-6r with mars mod/btech murs V1/ btech UV-5x3 triband. what antenna did you settle on for the VX-6r? looks like OEM? where did you source it? thanks

    • @TheTechPrepper

      Stock antenna. The OEM is just the factory/stock antenna. Currently, I am more concerned about moisture getting into the radio and the stock maintains the integrity of the seal and works well enough for my needs in my area. However, I always carry a second or third high-gain antenna. I often have the Comet BNC-24 dual bander as a backup for every day carry. Depending on where I am hiking I will a have Slim Jim J-Pole and some times even my 2m Arrow II backpacker yagi in the ruck.

    Which mobile radio you would recommend for a mars mod shtf situation?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 роки тому +4

      This is going to be a controversial topic. I have my own opinion based on my experiences and needs. Also, I am a Yaesu fan boy, so I am very biased toward that particular band. It really depends on what you want to accomplish. For me personally, I have assembled a number of mobile manpacks. If I had to rank order them for SHTF they would be as follows: Yaesu FT-818ND, Yaesu FT-857D and then the Yaesu FT-8900. If you don't need all-band (HF/VHF/UHF) capabilities then the FT-8900 would be my pick. It's what I showed at the end of the video. It's a quad-band mobile rig that can transmit out of band with the MARS mod. It also does crossband repeat. The first two provide HF capabilities, too. The FT-818ND is my first choice because of its size and weight. I can carry it along with other gear up a mountain along with me support gear with it out it killing me like the FT-857D. More on this topic later this month. I could talk about this for an hour. Please do your research. Check out the IC-705. It is not my thing because of its odd form factor, it is too delicate and the tough screen does not work with my levels of sweat. I could forgive those if it supported 20 watts, but it does not.

      In general, a good dual band 2m/440 antenna covers the ham bands and MURS/FRS/GMRS frequencies. I use the same dual band antenna for all of them. If you want to get pedantic, you can get better performance if you specifically purchase a mono band (single band) antenna specifically tuned for the frequency range you want to work.

    I tend to have issues with GPS units being intergrally combined with transmitters from an operational security standpoint. You have little to no knowledge or control over when your GPS data is being transmitted and how it is being shared in many instances.
    Cellphones are the worst offenders of abusing GPS data. Try turning off all GPS tracking in all the apps in your phone. Then check your Google timeline after about a week. Then put your phone in airplane mode for about a week. Then turn off airplane mode, make a phone call, check email, use your phone for 10-15 min. then go check your Google timeline.
    I prefer a separate GPS device, such as a dongle to a tablet, laptop, or pi type device that uses an air gap to gps.
    I don't know anything specific about amateur radios with GPS that would be negative, but if the radio and GPS are separate then there is minimal possibility of unwanted dissemination of GPS information.
    Geofencing is used to SPAM you inside stores when you approaching certian shelved items based on other harvested data.
    Edward Snowden reported physically destroys the onboard camera and microphone on cellphones he uses. He has to plug in an earpiece with a microphone to use his phone. There is no possibility of video from his phone.
    He reportedly has disable GPS chips also, but keeping you phone in a Faraday box except when in use may also be effective.

    • @TheTechPrepper

      These are all excellent points. Thanks for sharing these points with the viewers on the channel.
      I am also a big fan of standalone GPS units and my Garmin Instinct Solar watch. It has minimal capabilities to interface with a smart phone, but I have all that turned off. Security issues aside, I prefer simple in the field. I trust my "dumb" GPS more than the ones that have their tentacles connected to the Internet.
