I'm grateful for the video and insite. I was working on my 1972 Porsche 911 2.4 L engine. Couldn't turn the crankshaft fully. Only able to turn crank to allow 180 degrees only distributer back and forth between position 2 and 5...Firing order in 911 is 1,6,2,4,3,5. Ruled out sized piston because I was able to turn so much on the crank. Removed all rockers and still couldn't turn fully. After seeing video I have clarity. Bent valve.

Perfect! The first video I clicked on that explained perfectly and quickly what I was looking for that described what happened to my engine. Thank you.
Hi ED, Well, first you need to inspect if any damage happened to the engine block, pistons, mating surfaces ect. I think Toyota 4runner 3.0L and 3.5 non interference but I'm not 100% sure. I put new gasket and head on this block. Everything works like new. I filmed few cool videos during this engine rebuild process how to defect, inspect components and assemble but not edited and posted yet. Yeah, something like that. Plz, let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!
I have 85 vf1000r motorcycle engine (V4 engine) 2 front and 2 in rear that sat for many years. I unstucked by soaking the cylinder with MMO oil for many days and slow rocking the whole bike in 5th gear back and forth until I was able to turn full and unseized the engine. It has a lot of rust in it. I removed as much rust as I can by cranking with starter and pour MMO oil in the carb intake and shooting them out via spark plug holes. But I think I might have bent the intake valve on the rear cylinders in the process because I have very low PSI around 40 and the adjacent has 150 psi, I have blow back from the intake when I check compression basically losing compression from the intake. The valves were very rusty but now I think i might have bent the valve because when I turn by hand after unseizing, it has binding at some point when the engine was turned by hand just your what you did in the video. The front cylinders are ok with 180 PSI which are very good which didn't have those rusty valves like those rear ones. I bought a used engine but this one will need second gear to be under cutted in order for it not to pop out. I have been thinking to remove the head of the bad cylinders and replaced just the head from the spare engine and hopefully will achieve good psi again. Been thinking to swap the engine required a lot of work. What do you think ? Bent valve or rusted valve seats caused low compression? Motorcycle engines are all interference.
Hi Truong Ho! Thanks for sharing your story. I would just swap new/new used engine. Nowadays rebuilding engines not worth it. How much in parts and work it will cost to restore original engine compare to get good used one?
what was the root cause? was it the timing belt not replaced at the proper interval or no timing cover or a seized or high resistance on the camshaft bearings (bent camshaft/improper bearing cap torque)? thanks for posting this video. Very informative.

PistonShack hello am fredroger30@gmail.com have u an answer for my 93 century Buick , it ran good , but I let it sit for 2yrs. Now I can only turn crank about 180 degrees either way , I took off the belt and starter and used blaster spray in all cylinders twice , inside the valve covers I see are very clean , have checked flywheel also and nothing is loose or binding , how could it be a loose rod screw if so for sitting for 2yrs? Why won 't the engine crank turn all the way ? Only 40k miles on this car and I would like to keep it . This is puzzling.
I was wondering if there is any hope against buying a new head because mine is 1k$. I have 4age 20v and bought as a project as the crank pulley had broken but not the gear or timing belt, just pulley for accessories. I have replaced everything and bought new pulley key etc and new timing belt and now it won't turn. The timing belt never broke or skipped a tooth to my knowledge and the car ran for about an hour then slowly died with not much sound of metal banging around. But it is def frozen in one position after turning freely either direction. Any chance this could be ANYTHING else? Probably valve collision huh?(interference engine)
Hey how do I set my timing to top dead center if I forgot set it when taking off old belt . Was changing my timing belt and I forgot to set my timing before taking off my old belt so. Can I still set it with the belt in there or do I have to have a belt on there in order to put it too dead center
Hi Robert! I would set crankshaft to 1st cylinder to TDC and camshaft to 1st TDC compression stroke when both valves closed. Verified make sure 1 piston at TDC and check manufactures timing marks as well. After you got belt/chain installed rotate crankshaft with ratchet 360 few times make sure pistons don't touch valves. Always check vehicle repair manual for any specs.
Hi, great video. I have a 2011 bmw 535i xdrive with N55. It was running, though rough, when I shut it off and have a timing code. I have removed the spark plugs and injectors. For what ever reason I cannot turn the crank at all either way. Why?? Im replacing the timing chain and all the guards but I need to get it to TDC first. I am unable to. The engine was not seized before. What could have happened? Any ideas?? Thx
Hi Linda! Did you try to turn the engine over with a starter or at the crank pulley with a ratchet? It should turn over. I don't think you have broken valves or seized up engine. I would take the valve covers first off to see what is going on. Then, if need it, take the timing cover to check if something got jammed up.
I replaced a tensioner on my 03 pontiac vibe. I turned crank to release tensioner. Tried to pull the crank another 1/4 turn and it wouldn't go past a certain point. stupid me tried to start the car anyways, and it wouldnt even turn over. Would that be enough to cause something like this? We took off valve cover and pulled the crank, thr crank will only move like 1/4 turn in either direction but the chain does not appear to be moving when we do this. Could the tension replacement caused the chain to come off? kinda hoping for that since that may mean my engine is safe? Before this i had a loud chain rattle. (the reason i replaced the timing chain tensioner). Great video! thanks for any advice :)

Nice video. I wanted to free up the pistons on my SUV that's been sitting on the driveway for the past 5 years due to some problem with distributor. So, I am going to take off spark plugs and pour two teaspoons of engine oil into each hole of spark plugs and turn the crankshaft manually in clockwise after a week of letting the oil sink. So is this the way to do it or will it mess up the timing . And , is there certain limit on number of turns or can I turn it few more times until I feel the pistons being lubricated? I subscribed . Thank you.
Hey Kumar! It should not effect engine timing. Good time to check timing marks and condition of the timing components. I will go slow just with ratchet or braking bar. Soon as I can make fer 360 degrees turns. Disable ignition and injectors then crank engine over few times with a starter. Connect everything back and try to start the engine. Bzw, what vehicle do you have? Thanks Brotha!
Hello i have the same problem with my 1.4 12valve fiat engine. I took it to a mechanic to have a timing belt replaced. When i took it the car was running fine i got home i turned it of and the next day when i started it there was a banging sound that for time period od 2 minutes resulted with the engine shutting off by it self. Now its only half turning. My question is could it be the reason that my mechanic didn't do a proper job or some of the new parts malfunctioning? I called him and he said oh well you need a new engine. Now im frustrated and trying to figure out my self what happened. Great video thank you 👍
Oh, no. It doesn't sound any good. It's difficult to tell for sure what's happened. I would take front engine timing cover to take detailed look what failed and why component caused engine to fail. It could be mechanic error installing timing belt and setting belt tension incorrectly or faulty parts, which is unlikely. I would take every timing component and examine for manufacture defects as well. If you can take everything apart and film simple video it will help to figure it out. Cheers!
i got a problem . I turned the crankshaft clockwise accidentally while having the camshafts locked in the guided positions is there a way i can turn it back counter clockwise without unlocking or do i have to do a whole turn all over again please advise me
Hey Juan. I would turn engine clockwise to set 1st cylinder in TDC, check reference marks on crank pulley and housing then verify make sure your 1st piston in TDC.
I thought it was the starter but I got it replaced, it wont turn the flywheel over all the way. Last time I drove it cut off while I was driving now it just clicks when trying to start.
Working on installing my injectors I think a little screw fell down into the cylinder and now I can only turn the crank shaft 180 degrees. Could it have jammed something?
I have a f150 with the 5.0 and I can turn it over by hand but every once in a while it gets caught up on something and you can here something clacking on something then it gets stuck but if you work it a little bit it'll get past the point where it get caught up on. Do you have any idea why that is if you don't mind me askin?
I’m having this issue of not being able to turn crankshaft 360 but on a four stroke 150cc gy6 scooter. The scooter starts but I immediately turn it off because all you hear is loud clacking and no exhaust it seems. Could this be my problem as well?
Hi Roland, Sounds like might be a valve train issue. Did you check oil pressure and engine compression? Take valve cover and oil pan to get a closer look what happed. Let me know what did you find. Cheers!
@@collinsmccarthy5625 I don’t remember exactly but I do remember I had to go back and reassemble again which ultimately fixed whatever I had screwed up initially.
@@Roland-Henry facts, ended up taking my valve cover off to make sure everything is timed properly. Going back in tonight to try and align everything. I pray the valves arent bent.
My car is a dodge charger 2011 it turn complete but is a little hard to turn it manually probably the valves are bent no too much but enough to wont start at all, replaced starter and battery but still the same.
What are the reasons for the crankshaft not turning? Because its hitting the intake valves? Can be there be any other reason as to why it cannot turn? I made a tight turn and my engine seized. It turned about a full cycle roughly until it got stuck. If the reason why it got seized was because of oil starvation from the g-force (my theory), why would this cause the crankshaft not to move?
Yeah, if crankshaft does not turn 360 that could be the cam/valves issue. If it dosn't turn at all most likely engine seized up. Take timing belt (chain) off then try to turn crank and cams separately to isolate the issue. When and How this problem occurred?
@@PistonShack I drifted around a corner and my engine shut off. I take off spark plugs, starter and try to turn crankshaft but moves about one cycle and half before it gets stuck in one position. Now it doesn't move at all. How would I test camshaft?
Hi, this is the first video of yours that I have seen. You said that the cylinder head in this video is done for, not worth rebuilding. Then you describe buying a used one and "getting it to spec". Isn't that what a machine shop does? If you're not a machinist yourself, how can you get a cylinder head or engine block to spec? It requires tools that only a machine shop would have. I would rather have a professionally rebuilt head or block put back into my car as opposed to throwing a used one in there. Even if it was tested. I would prefer one with fresh factory specs.
Happy New Year! That head was damaged, that's right. I got used (like new) cylinder head. Checked warpage and distortion of the cylinder head and block prior to installation. Cleaned old gasket and carbon deposits to get parts ready for measurements and assembly. Both of them were in VW factory specifications. Replaced cylinder head gasket and head bolts. Torqued head bolts to the factory requirements. VW don't recommend machining heads and blocks. You can machine head and block but nowadays cheaper and easy to find good one VW 2.0 swap from the wrecker or just swap whole engine. I hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching.
@@PistonShack Thank you for the answer. Like I thought, you could only do checks and brush up the cylinder head. If it needed any work, it would need to go to a machine shop. I'm glad it worked out for you! Happy New Year :)
Hi Hablando, well you just do some search on your make and model. You can find info online. What kind vehicle do you drive (year, make, model, engine) I might can answer your question.
My 01 tahoe revd up 7000 rpm during auto start i Then stop it from running. now it just a loud click as I try start it ... I tried turn crank only go 180. I took plugs out, crank barely move @ all now
Hey Bro! Sounds like you might have dropped valve or skipped timing chain. I would take valve covers and inspect cams, chain, rockers, springs ect. Take oil pan off to look for any metal franments. Let me know what did you find?
My engine is kind of doing the same thing but it spins a little more. I never started my engine though. I was simply changing the timing belt. When I try to spin it by hand it gets stuck. What can I do?
Hi Michel, That's good timing belt did not brake at hwy speed or idle. Set 1st cylinder at Top Dead Centre - aligning marks on crank and camshaft sprockets. Get engine timing to specs, turned 360 degrees 3 times make sure no any issues. That should be OK. Let me know how everything is going.
Hi brotha, Oh, I see what happened. I have done transmission on Ford trucks v8 couple times. I will share how I did and what worked for me. There're two ways to get gear box split from the engine: 1. Proper way. 1) remove starter motor; 2) remove propeller (drive) shafts; 3) switch transmission to N; 4 ) mark position of the range selector arm to the gear box for future reference; 5) remove drive plate cover on the bottom for the engine; 6) remove torque converter nuts, you should be able even to move drive plate by pushing with long enough flat screwdriver or prybar. 2. Second, "red neck style" 1) remove bell housing bolts and pull engine out with torque converter attached to the drive plate. 2) undo torque converter nuts when engine is out. This way transmission input shaft probably will get busted, replace the seal after and you should be good to go no leaks. Well, I hope it will help you out. Let me know how is your progress. Thanks for watching and appreciated if you subscribe to support my hobby small channel. Happy Holidays to you and your Family.

It could be mechanic error installing timing belt and setting belt tension incorrectly or faulty parts, which is unlikely. I would take every timing component and examine for manufacture defects as well. If you can take everything apart and film simple video it will help to figure it out. Cheers!
Respect for sure
Thanks brotha! What's happened to your vehicle?
Great video! You should repost this video titled “What happens when interference Engine Timing Chain/Belt Breaks”
Great suggestion! Check it out.
How many miles was that timing belt on there for?
HEy Humm. I am not sure how many miles was on this timing belt but vehicle had around 200K
i got a problem .
Could that be the only problem, I don't want to have to take off the top of I don't have to. I have a 2013 Chevy Impala. It turns but not 360.
Take one of the valve covers to check belt/chain sprockets and valve train before digging any dipper. Btw, what is history of this issue?
I thought it was the starter but I got it replaced, it wont turn the flywheel over all the way. Last time I drove it cut off while I was driving now it just clicks when trying to start.
Working on installing my injectors I think a little screw fell down into the cylinder and now I can only turn the crank shaft 180 degrees. Could it have jammed something?
That's not good. I would get borescope camera to look inside the cylinder then get that screw up there.
@@PistonShack Thanks for the inform. I will do.
I have a f150 with the 5.0 and I can turn it over by hand but every once in a while it gets caught up on something and you can here something clacking on something then it gets stuck but if you work it a little bit it'll get past the point where it get caught up on. Do you have any idea why that is if you don't mind me askin?
And I drain the oil and found no metal shavings
What happen to the engine if we rotate the crankshaft 180 Degrees from timing mark?
Nothing should happen. Can you rotate full 360 degrees?
I’m having this issue of not being able to turn crankshaft 360 but on a four stroke 150cc gy6 scooter. The scooter starts but I immediately turn it off because all you hear is loud clacking and no exhaust it seems. Could this be my problem as well?
Hi Roland,
Sounds like might be a valve train issue. Did you check oil pressure and engine compression? Take valve cover and oil pan to get a closer look what happed. Let me know what did you find. Cheers!
Bro same sh*t, i need answers.
Very good video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Who Invented the modern engine
Just subscribed... good content dude
Thank you so much brotha! Take care.
@@pcrb141 You're so welcome! It worked out well. Cheers!
How do I know if my engine is an interference engine or free wheeling?
Hi Hablando, well you just do some search on your make and model. You can find info online. What kind vehicle do you drive (year, make, model, engine) I might can answer your question.
@@PistonShack 1.9l brm 2006 vw tdi engine?

Thanks bro good video
You are so welcome brotha! i'm glad it helped you out)
Turn the cam shaft as well
What made this happen
Got the same problem on my Chevy 3.6. What a bummer
That's bummer, indeed. I guess you can pick a another engine cheap from wreckers.
@@PistonShack thanks im gonna remove head an see
My engine is kind of doing the same thing but it spins a little more.
If you drive a manual and it’s on an engine stand, make sure your clutch has room to move…..
Thanks for the heads up.
I’m having this problem on my v8 f150 but I don’t even have the heads on I’m trying to turn the engine over to remove the torque converter bolts help😩
Hi brotha,
Oh, I see what happened. I have done transmission on Ford trucks v8 couple times.
I will share how I did and what worked for me. There're two ways to get gear box split from the engine:
2. Second, "red neck style"
1) remove bell housing bolts and pull engine out with torque converter attached to the drive plate.
I started removing the torque converter bolts I got two of them out but one of them rounded and I’m so exhausted😂
@@CountryBoy-re9xp Just leave them for now. Pull the engine with torque converter attached and deal with them when engine is out or you can use bolt removal socket to grab stripped nuts.
Will do my man I’ll let you know my progress when I get back to it
@@CountryBoy-re9xp Sound good! Cheers.
My motorcycle has this problem. Very sad.
Why is there so much burned ash on the pistons?? How do you clean it?
It's okay. Soot and carbon deposits built up over time. I will make a video how to clean it up.
@@PistonShack it’s called the classic warm er up good and send er a screamin at 8k *waaaadaaadddaaaaaddaaaadd* and watch the carbon fly lmaoo
For me my rear cam isn’t turning not the crack shaft 😭
Hi Carlos. I would take timing cover and valve cover to see what is going on with it. What vehicle do you have?
I just was about to sell my car for cheap thinking my engine lock up but it spins 180 both sides
Loosen the valves see what happens
I wish, I could do it. I don't have that engine any longer. What will happen?
Damn...
That was end of the cylinder head(
It's a v,8
No, this one 4 cylinder.
