  • I do a teardown and test of a Victron Energie Atlas Combi 12-800. It is a combined battery charger and 230VAC inverter. The battery charger of the Atlas Combi is suitable for a 230 VAC, (50 Hz) mains voltage. The charger works automatically, so batteries may remain permanently connected to the charger, even during winter storage. The Atlas Combi is suitable for starter batteries and semi-traction batteries of the lead/acid type in open or sealed designs. The inverter converts the 12 VDC into 230 VAC, 50 Hz.

Just connect the primary to 220 and check the current draw, if it's high, than it's shorted. They may have connected the transformer to the case to create an Earth potential, when it tuns on battery.

That is testing for catastrophic failure, 230VAC is not current limited. I wanted to avoid that by using a non-destructive insulation tester, but I used a too high voltage, for me to be sure that it was not causing more harm.

    Hi Mads
I am surprised that you have a leakage through to GND. Did not expect that !
if you would be able to make a conduction between the primary or secondary winding through GND with your tester the transformer would be broken anyway.
Anyway, if you feel for it, ship it to me and I will disassemble it and give it a new primary winding, however the secondary winding I will have to reuse the olde copper since I don't have that size on stock.
I can see you liv about 130 Km from me.
It is up to You :)
    Regards Allan

Great video mate.. the battery is falling below low voltage cut out I think mate, but your right i think in that it should not show a load on the inverter when its unloaded like you said the transformer is toast🤣...

The small battery behaves as expected, it will drop hard below its working voltage and under voltage setting of the inverter. That works fine. As others suggested, I might have completely killed a slightly defective transformer, but that was then bound to fail eventually and should not be used.

@@KaizerPowerElectronicsDk agreed, it was probably scrapped for failing a hi pot test in the first place

I forgot if I mentioned that in the video... This was part of a thrown out lot of battery chargers and inverters from a marine company. Chances are good that it was all defective in various states.

@@KaizerPowerElectronicsDk yeah I think the transformer was already dead hence the load light with no load connected

I don't think that inverter charger is bad at all, your batteries are way too small and unable to deliver enough current, that's why it cuts out when trying to power loads.
Output voltage really depends on battery voltage in these types of inverters that use a step up transformer.
Set it up properly with a proper battery and you will find that it works 100% no problem.

It still has a inverter under load at all times. I am aware that battery is not going to power a heat fun, where it as it should, drops the battery voltage and goes in under voltage. So are you sure that a suitable battery would result in "inverter under load" to go away even when there is no load? Even when output voltage is normal on the small battery.
