  • The van had unfortunately been having issues for a few months. Ultimately, I chose to have the engine rebuilt by a reputable Sprinter engine rebuilder. The catch was that he is up in Toledo, Ohio and I’m in the Tampa Bay area but he was highly recommended in the t1n Sprinter community.
In this video, I document my journey to retrieve the van and my drive back home (1,100-miles over a 22-hour period on an untested engine). This video shows all the challenges along the way as well as my commentary related to the engine rebuild and how the van did on the drive home.
Thanks for watching and please remember to subscribe to the Rambling with Phil UA-cam channel to see more videos like this one as well as travel and DIY videos.

So I don't know if you said. How much was this rebuild and install?

It was about $7,700 plus I paid for new fuel injectors (about another $2.5k). It was the best price I could find actually

@@RamblingWithPhil I just got done rebuilding my own engine. I'm paranoid about every noise now. I had no shop manual nothing. There's an idler gear on the timing chain that drives the HPFP. It has a dot on it and no one knows where it's suppose to be aligned. Neither do I. There's several things like this. I had to reuse the stretch bolts so I don't know what will happen there. And no, I didn't have an option. I don't have the resources for new stuff

What did they say was wrong with your engine? What caused the knocking sound.

They never did because they used someone else’s block as the rebuilt engine & put it into my van. At the time they hadn’t taken my engine apart yet & I never followed back up.
Thanks for watching & your question!

The knocking noise was probably the gear for whatever turns the high pressure pump, not sure what it's called, but mine sounded like nuts rattling around in the engine. Then one day it didn't start. Only a company in Dallas figured it out. Cost about 7000.00 with new injectors and high pressure pump that I didn't need!
