The easiest way I've found to get around the cap shortage is to just make them yourself. Dixie Gun Works has the Tap-O-Cap, and there's a section in the book TM 31-210 dedicated to making priming compound so you don't have to rely on outside sources for that, either.
I literally was searching this exact topic aprox 60 min ago when this video shows posted. Then I refreshed my sub feed and there you were!! :) Going through my dismal supply of production caps and test fitting on the sliX-shot nipples I just put on a cylinder for a Walker clone.
I checked and I got CCI, RWS, and Remington. The Rems are an old sealed tin I got at a garage sale for 50 cents or something like that. The makers do not have the excuse that military takes priority for these type of primers! 😉I hope.
Just now left Bass Pro with my first box of CCI 11s. Almost went home to order Remington 10s because Bass Pro has none and I was unaware that CCI 11s would work. Thanks, you’ve saved me from waiting for shipping.
CCI sucks balls! 1 in 3 won't detonate. Remington is my choice but always stick a cotton ball in your tin, as vibration causes the chemicals to break loose.
They are ultra rare here too. Sometimes around black powder hunting season our local store will come up with a few dozen packs of CCI # 11s but they go within minutes of being put out, so you kind of have to be there. I've never even seen a CCI #10 in the real world. I guess they just aren't in demand here. I'm not sure. I prefer Rem. #10s, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a tin in over 3 years now of them, so I guess they are pretty impossible to get here anymore. I was going to invest in a cap maker, but at about $100 when all is said and done, it just isn't in my budget right now. You would think that with the massive shortage every where CCI would see the opportunity to clean up and make a fortune. Even if only for a little while start production for a couple of months and fix this mess, but apparently their CEO has no vision. Because if it was me, I can see a massive opportunity to dominate the market! (Apparently they picked the wrong man for the job!)
Just measured some cci #10 & #11 they are the same length at .168 the diameter on the #10 was.172 the diameter on the #11 was.178. I found that interesting.
Where I live I can find CCI#11 but not Rem.#10. Before the Shortage I bought a bunch of RWS 1075 and 1075+ which seem to fit better but now I can't find them anymore and Graf and Sons doesn't have them either. I also got a few WIN #11Mag. but they fall off badly. Only one place in town I can find anything. They had a few Rem.#10 for a couple of weeks and they fit my Pietta's but now all he can get are Rem#11 which fall off. I bought the tool from .22LR Reloader but had issues with fit also the priming compound doesn't work unless I leave out the Yellow (Dextrin) and use Duco Cement Diluted with Acetone. Pack the Compound firmly before adding the Duco/Acetone mix and dry overnight. I made a small loading block for the caps with the holes a little tight and use a flat ended drill bit to flatten the cups and form them to the inside of the holes in the loading block before filling. Now my DIY caps stay on the Cones and actually fire most of the time. I used to only get 1 or 2 per cylinder.
This cap shortage has had me passing on buying a cap & ball gun. Nobody local carries any and most online places I’ve gone to are out. It ridiculous that CCI only makes them once a year and who knows what’s going on at Remington with their financial problems.
Thank you very much Dustin! You are a gentleman. Perhaps on your follow up video, if you have cross reference by manufacturer on the 10’s & 11’s caps? This video was done quickly & very insightful content. Thank again sir!
Great video. I have the Cap maker from Sharpshooter 22 and the Prime-All priming compound from Sharpshooter 22 and they work great. I also have. Good supply of RWS 1075, Remington #10s and CCI#11s for all my percussion firearms. But I can remember for the past 3 years it was hard to find percussion caps. Take care, thank you.
Hi Dustin, I ordered a set of your cappers and they work very well on all of my cap & ball revolvers both Pietta and Uberti. And I love the lightning shipping!
I just shot a CAS match with two ‘61 Navies. Using both CCI 11 and RWS 1075 caps, had at least one or two chambers fail to fire the first time around on every stage. And I was seating the caps with a dowel. Very frustrating. Remingtons never did that to me.😬
It seems Remington #10s are now in stock on cabelas website for $13. I purchased 5 tins and got free shipping and no hazard fee because I’ve shipped them to the store to pick up.
I really wish percussion caps were easier to get, I have made my own with the .22LR reloader kit but I’d rather just buy them, it takes quite a bit of time to make them by hand, also the mercury fulminate leaves less residue on the cones than .22 primer does
Here in Europe, percussion caps are hard to find, very hard, recently sellier and bellot started making them, but they sell everything very quickly, no matter how many are made, everything is sold...hello from europe !
Like yourself, I stocked up on components prior to the plan-demik. When everyone else was out of ammo, caps, primers, powder etc. I was ok. And like the grasshopper to the ant, folks wanted my stuff. Sorry, but their poor planing is not my fault. After the big über shortage, some years back, I swore that I'd never be caught short again. Living on a pension, that's 12% below the national poverty level, I'd buy components every month. Not alot, but I was methodical in my approach to things.
I talked to CCI at NRAAM this year. The rep I spoke with said they make one batch of percussion caps a year and ship them out. He said there are no plans to change this practice.
Just tried the CCI # 11 on my Pietta/Remington New Army and they would not stay on the nipples. I had to bend the end of them a bit with fingers to get them to stay on. Maybe the Pietta nipples are slightly smaller in diameter.
I find the CCI #11's fall off the stock nipples, the CCI#10's hold on better, however they need a wooden Dowel's extra bit of help to insure firing off the first time haha. Remington # 10's are my Absolute Favorite ones! AND Ive been able to find some for the first time in 2 years at a store! thanks for the video
I am a huge fan of the Uberti 61 Navy! I have been using an assortment of the CCI's and Remington caps. I like the Remington's on my revolver but prefer the CCI's on my rifles and shotgun.
I have a 58 army Buffalo pistol 44 caliber. The 11 just fall off my gun. I am not found no tens to compare them with. I have to pinch the 11 down to get them to stay on the gun
Nipples are a factor as well. The stock nipples are conical, while aftermarket ones like SlixShots are straight-walled. The mark against the CCI caps really manifests if you mount them onto a stock nipple, because the outer diameter of the nipple is smaller at the top than it is farther down, and the shorter cap doesn't get as far down as the Remington caps.
I was fortunate to pick up some #10 CCI's from Sportsman's last year. They limited me to one tin. I felt fortunate. I do notice that they're hard to put on the nipples. Ant thoughts?
Nobody carries caps! I found one last pack of cci 11 at academy sports and i went to the remmington site and they said multiple locations near me carry it but i called each location and they dont carry them anymore. *_Let us know what you find out!!_*
Not my experience at all on an older Italian 1858 repro---Rem #10 works great, CCI #11 all fall off quite easily under recoil. So, it all depends on the gun/nipple.
That’s interesting. I know the quality control of these Italian companies used to be pretty spotty, but it seems to have improved now. Different nipples can definitely still have different results though.
Hola, soy Español vivo en Madrid, tengo licencias F y AU,como puedo conseguir el porta pistones de 12?,está en venta en Madrid? O como lo puedo conseguir, tengo un Remington 1850 new army c-44.
I'm partial to the Remington 10's, even if they're as rare as hen's teeth now. But I need to give the CCI 11's a re-evaluation. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Winchester brand caps, which I've seen in stock only slightly more frequently than CCI's (those I haven't seen locally for over a year now).
Powder Valley, Buffalo Arms and Graf and Sons all have RWS #11 caps in stock if you are in a pinch. I emailed CCI recently and got the normal corporate BS response. So Dustin, when you email or talk to them, it is time to stop being nice. Let them know we are tired of their BS. Give us the straight facts. Is their a production run at this time? If not, when? Just my two cents worth.
There's no such thing as remington #10's, I haven't found any of those in at least 5 years. I can find CCI's from time to time so I grab those when I see them

I've always finished my caps from the Tap-O-Cap by running them through a 12 point socket on a dowel the size of the nipple they are to be used on.
Thanks for clearing up some of the confusion many foks have regarding caps!
3:35 I like how the one cap was like "Up, up and away!" and just leaves on it's own.

I found I had a tin of rare German rifle caps, they work for my 1860 snubnose.
I recently got some RWS 1075s. They seem to fit my Uberti 51 navy quite well.
WHERE did you find caps?!?!?!

@@therightisright8276 Powder Valley had some a couple weeks ago. They still might.
Powderinc has rws at $220. Per 1000..
@@kimberlyschuhs5903 Thanks! Be sure to keep sealed, don't shake or rattle as it loosens chemicals from caps and won't detonate.
Thanks for your videos!
Just found a case of CCI #11s from the late 70s/early 80s and they work perfectly. $25 on eBay. They can be found.
CCI number 11 caps tend to fit better on the colt style repros but on the remington style repros they tend to be too loose

the cci 10's fit my pietta 1851 navy perfectly on the stock nipples, never had an issue with them (out of 200 or so shots)
I picked up a cap maker a couple of months ago. The caps work great for my little single shot Derringer. I haven't tried them on a revolver yet tho.

I think that our C&B needs an updgrade with the slixshot nipples and, on it , the CCI are fitting very very well

Make my own with kit from 22 reloader. It’s time consuming and tedious but can make a lot cheap.
Ive always had better luck with the #10s they always felt tighter and in my experience were less likely to fly off when firing
I can find CCI #11 on occasion but the #10s are non-existent.
ive got some hornady balls and some cci no 11 caps but no powder right now
Been making my own for 3 years now. Girlfriend is mad because she cant take my beer cans back, i save them for my caps.

How long will caps stay good loaded on to a cylinder ?
As long as they’re not exposed to extreme elements, they can last indefinitely on there.

With Slix shot nipples. They a designed for Remington #10 only .
