"There are no straight women. There are just women who haven't seen Rachel Weisz in The Mummy yet." But seriously, I love this movie so much. And Rachel Weisz is the MVP. Everybody in this movie looks like they're having a blast, but she takes it to a whole new level.
I love Rachel in other movies but not so much in this one. Her character is too goofy. Plus everyone forgets she is literally the cause of the entire catastrophe, she resurrected him out of sheer stupidity. Besides, I was too distracted by Patricia Velasquez tbh.
@nodak81 Yeah, but that's when you get into the whole Evil Dead thing. If they don't read from the book, there's no movie. Personally, I just love the playfulness and class Rachel Weisz brings to it. Patricia Velasquez is gorgeous but she had a better chance to shine in Mummy Returns.

Odd the subtitles were off. But the Imhotep/Beni exchange was more or less Beni's prayer in Hebrew, Imhotep recognized it as "the language of the slaves" he then says "I may yet have a use for you". While extending the gold he says "And the rewards will be great" While shaking the broken Canopic Jar he asks "Where are the other sacred jars" a moment of foreshadowing to the hunting down of the rest of the Americans that opened the box.
Amazing how even the mummy knew that the speakers of that language would sell their own family for a dollar. Thousands of years, and nothing about them changed.
28:35 Here, when the man spoke Hebrew, the mummy recognized it as "the language of slaves", a call back to the Israelite being enslaved in Egypt, and thus he decided to keep the guy around as his servant.
One of many inaccuracies in the movie, as the Israelites were never slaves, there's no evidence in any Egyptian records or physical evidence of their exodus across the desert into Israel. The Egyptians didn't use slaves to build pyramids and monuments anyway, they used unskilled labourers to haul the stones, skilled stonemasons and brick layers to place them and carpenters to build the sleds and ramps. Still a great movie, a classic switch your brain off adventure flick.
@@Ali-bu6lo Well ye lol, obviously it's a comedy/horror/adventure type thing in the same vein as Indiana Jones, nobody was expecting realism, but they didn't have to make shit up about Egypt (like making a 5th canopic jar, saying they pulled out the heart which Egyptians didn't actually do). Saying that though they do get a lot accurate, like the hieroglyphs. I watched a video of an Egyptologist translating every scene with them in, and they match up with what they're supposed to say surprisingly well. Compare that to Tom Cruise's Mummy film, where they just scribbled a bunch of random hieroglyphs that don't mean anything out of context, copied from surviving parchments of the book of the dead. Most of the hieroglyphs I think were more early AD Coptic writings than ancient Egyptian.
@@greypilgrim228 At this point in time things in movies were still heavily influenced by Christian biblical teachings and ideas. And within that idea everyone "knows" that Egypt had slaves as their manual labor. It was simply something the writers took as fact because that's likely how they were raised and wrote it into the movie as such.
"If Jack Burton was Indiana Jones..." is an excellent description of O'Connell's personality. The trick with the mirrors was tested by "Mythbusters", and it works - as long as the sun is in exactly the right place, which it usually isn't, and it moves during the day. So it's not really that useful.
While it 'works', it's pretty much accepted that it's not how they lit up dark rooms. As you mentioned, the sun moves constantly so you only get minutes at a time before it moves out of position, becmoning useless. Chances are they just used regular torches/firelight. There is obviously the 'Bahgdad battery' theory too, which isn't too far-fetched as instructions on making a galvanic style battery has also been found in ancient Indian texts as well, so may had some form of basic electrical lighting.
Saw this movie originally with my niece and nephew. Enjoyed it then and it still holds up well today. Brendan Fraser's best performance to me was in 'The Whale' (2022).
A friend of mine through middle school and I STILL quote this movie! She's always reminded me of Evie, and she's always said that I remind her of Rick. Too bad she's not interested in marriage at all. Still, my heart aches for her. 🥰
Somehow I feel so bad for Benny, and yet, he did it to himself more than once, just like being on the wrong side of a river 😂 🤣 He was so dumb there! And that "war face" on O'Connell! That one worked well!
The Mummy is either one of the most enjoyable bad movies ever made, or one of the most nonsensical good movies ever made. It's completely ludicrous, and yet so much fun to watch.
@MadMike1 I would add the original Road House with Patrick Swayze to that list. Does it make much sense as a story? Not really. Do I enjoy watching it anyway? Yup.
One of the best feel good movies back then. Great comedy, adventure and thrill. A hero and heroin with weaknesses and strengths. Such a good piece of entertainment.
There aren't words strong enough to describe how much I love this movie. Everyone is incredible on their respective roles (especially Kevin J O'Connor as Beni) but there's just something special about the 3 leads - Brendan, Rachel, and Arnold - that helps this movie overshadow everything else in this genre for me. Oh, and Winston. We love Winston. We particularly love how, the moment he finds out he could die on this mission, nothing else matters and he's in with his whole entire British heart.
That destruction scene at the end was so good that it almost got the film company in trouble with the country where they were filming. The wall at the front is an actual wall, and a national land mark. When they saw the footage of that destruction, they actually thought that the wall had been destroyed as well.
BANGER... after BANGER... after BANGER! I'm always excited seeing what you'll watch each week, and I'm always pleasantly surprised. Im pretty sure you've covered like 90% of my favorite movies of all time at this point.
Brendan Fraser nearly died during the scene where his character is hanged. Rachel Weisz remembered, "He [Fraser] stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated."
Yeah, i just read up on that. It caused him to black out and at no point did he need resuscitated or stop breathing so to say he nearly died is a real exaggeration and this thing people do of taking what happened and stretching it to it's most extreme interpretation i do not like (you guys believe all these kind of stories and repeat them for different movies as fact with zero research). He had crew around him and would have never been in legitimate danger of being left to choke to death. He basically had the equivalent of a choke hold put on him therefor blacked out. Scary at the time i have no doubt.
I'm really glad you checked this one out, Ames. It's a fun ride. It's also one of the first movies I saw with my wife in theatres, and so I try to watch it every year on the same day to remember her.
"HEY BENNY, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER!" Is one of my favorite lines in any movie iver ever seen. Idk why but it has stuck to me since first watched this movie
I watched this so much as a kid & its been one of my favorites ever since!!! I even played the Playstation game back in the day because I loved it so much. One of the most underrated films ever in my opinion & the best adaption to the classic Mummy. Also...Rachel Weisz & Brendan Fraiser have no right to be so attractive in this movie!!! You've also got the most weasely character in film history...damn you Benny!! Jonathan is a riot too & i love him!😂 The sequel ain't bad either but im so happy you're reviewing this!! Big Winston salute🙌
Fuck yea we are. One of my favorite movies ever. 10/10 soundtrack, great cinematography, VFX that still hold up, great cast, plus all the main characters are extremely attractive lol. Not to be too much of a pop culture snob but to all the people who don't understand - yes this is a stellar movie but it's a "reboot" or "remake" of a movie that's been made before, similar to how there are 3 The Things. The original Mummy (1932) is basically the same story - a team of archaeologists finds Imhotep and resurrects him using the Scroll of Thoth and then he escapes, but, the second half of the movie is a bit different. The Mummy as a story has been done in media quite a bit whether it's Invincible, Goosebumps, etc.
This film is the very definition of good entertainment. Just like you said, a fantastic blend of comedy, horror, action, and romance. There's few instances of pause, and little thinking needed. One of my favorites!
Your watch brought me back to the theater, seeing this for the first time! At the time it was unique, a horror movie with essentially no blood. A romance with 1 true kiss. a love story tragedy in the background. Just all around style and warmth and humor on top of a lovely mummy movie. This is a film i will always stop to watch if i catch it. Keep up the great work.
My favorite thing about this movie is the way all the gory scenes were suggested by shadows or off camera with the other characters reacting to it. It was a brilliant homage to the old Boris Karloff Mummy movies of the 1930s. Those movies played on Saturday night "Creature Features" when I was a kid back in the 70s
*The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.* *Side trivia:* *1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply).* *2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel.* *3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move.* *4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.*
I remember watching this as a kid, and I was absolutely shocked shoeless watching the initial reveal in the pyramidal crypt, of Imhotep. Absoluely chilled, as an adult, not so much haha, but that first time as a child watching it, two hands over eyes were the only save. Hope you enjoyed it :)
For me, beauty is more than just physical looks, and in this movie Rachel Weisz checks all of the boxes. A smart, brave, nerdy librarian who *also* happens to be stunningly beautiful? Yes, please. Another movie from the same guy that has a lot of the same vibes to it (and also has the actor who played Beni in it - he likes using that guy) that has been mostly forgotten is the Lovecraftian action-adventure-horror movie Deep Rising. It came out the year before The Mummy, and some of the CGI shows it, but it's still loads of over-the-top campy fun. I don't want to say too much else about it in case you decide to watch it, because spoilers, but I definitely recommend it.
As someone who is claustrophobic as well, I think I could handle going into a pyramid nowadays because there is usually a clearly marked exit, but if it’s somewhere that I couldn’t easily find my way out of, then I’d start to freak out. A good movie suggestion for a fellow claustrophobic, is The Descent. 17:59 Actually on soft sand, camels are faster than horses because they have wider feet, same principle as snowshoes.
The original BW Mummy, with Boris Karloff, is very good. The Hammer Horror Mummy movie is very good too. Some of the Hammer Horror films are on Tubi. Peter Cushing was involved with the Hammer movies.
Awww... you missed my favorite line in the movie! "Oh.... My... God... Winston! Pedal faster!". 🤣 I love this movie.... it's just the right balance of high adventure story, and campy comedy. I think you need to watch it again, and turn on subtitles to see the subtitles... they were there! I swear!
The VFX team came to my school to give a presentation on this the year it came out, the tech they were working with was insane at the time, it was an amazing behind the scenes look into how they made everything come to life, no pun intended. That sequence where O'Connell is swinging around plowing through all those mummies was great because everything that wasn't him and the sword were CGI, they just built and animated the characters around his swings.
3 people knew The Mummy needed to suck them dry to regenerate and they also knew The Mummy feared cats. Still amazes me they never thought to keep a cat near each of them.
Saw this at a cinema matinee when it dropped. Amazing! Wasn't sure about the casting of Encino Man as the lead but DAMN if Brendan Frasier isn't a treasure. Should watch The Whale. Easily the best performance of his career. I remember the ride. Did it about 20 years ago here in Orlando. The decor of the queuing was AMAZING. "Let me see your war face" ded lol
The Mummy is an absolute timeless cinematic masterpiece. Peak adventure story, humour, everything. I can watch it anyday, anywhere, anytime, rain or shine.
I sincerely consider this the last great adventure movie we ever got. After this we get a lot of revisionist or deconstructionist adventure movies with a more serious tone. Was just thinking. The cutting out of his tongue would be a huge curse for ancient Egyptians. As I remember, a part of their afterlife belief is that you have to recite a specific death spell or be doomed .
Since I too love Rachel Weisz, and you tied this to Big Trouble in Little China which I also love, you unquestionably get my worthless gold star of the day! ❤ Thank you for another great reaction. This was fun!

@@HumungusO_o You said Imhotep was ignorant. Ignorant of what? The other person is pointing out how he's not being ignorant and knows that Benny is just a tool.
"There are no straight women. There are just women who haven't seen Rachel Weisz in The Mummy yet."
But seriously, I love this movie so much.
@@nodak81Too goofy? The whole movie is goofy, but in a great way. She is fantastic in this movie, as is Brendan Fraser. I'd watch the movies just for them alone.
@@nodak81 Stupidity though? It's the '20s and she's an academic, of course she doesn't put stock in superstitions. We in the audience happen to know what's up, but why would she? TBF, the archaeologist on the other crew reacts to her reading from the book like he knows, but he may already have had some experience of this stuff in the field that she lacks.
@@nodak81 No, the guards/guardians are the cause. They cursed him to eternal life and then entombed him, making it inevitable that he would return, and giving them and their descendants an endless task. If they had just killed him, that would have been the end of it, but no, their over developed sense of vengeance caused the whole mess.
Brendon Fraser was almost actually hanged when the stunt failed.
Fraser, there’s no ‘i’ in it.

The Mummy is a great movie!
@greypilgrim228 Demanding accuracy to real history from a movie with a walking corpse in it is laughable.
The Bible talks about it. @greypilgrim228
If Jack Burton was competent, and Indiana Jones.
Yay!! I used to play this movie over and over when I was a kid!🍿🥤
Saw this movie originally with my niece and nephew. Enjoyed it then and it still holds up well today. Brendan Fraser's best performance to me was in 'The Whale' (2022).
Saw it in the theater when it came out. It's an all around fun movie.
I bet she's going to just love Benny!
O'Connell chair maneuver > Riker chair manuever (st:tng)
The Mummy is either one of the most enjoyable bad movies ever made, or one of the most nonsensical good movies ever made. It's completely ludicrous, and yet so much fun to watch.
The Mummy is one of those "critic-proof" movies like Commando or Face/Off.
Are there problems with it? Absolutely
Do I care? No
@MadMike1 I would add the original Road House with Patrick Swayze to that list.
SO many beautiful humans in this movie, eye candy for all!
BANGER... after BANGER... after BANGER!
Ames, I LOVE you! Thank you for letting us spend this time with you. One of my favorite movies.
Another great Frasier movie is
Blast from the Past
Its a great movie if you wanna smile the whole time
That’s such a classic feel good movie
I love the romance in this movie! Not what I expected, but it's just a fun action/romance/comedy. It is such a feel good movie.
Save the librarian, save the world. Damn. Now I want to watch, Heroes.
27:26 Let me see your war face is such a good reference 😂
Kevin J Connor who plays Beni plays a similar type of character in the movie 'Deep Rising' which is really worth a watch.
Thank you, I can never remember his name!
I remember seeing that movie in the theater when I was in high school with a friend of mine.
36:45 --- Isn't that what everyone really wants at least ONCE in their lives? To be a hero.
I saw this movie 4 times in theaters and once at the drive in. It never gets old.
I loved this movie when it came out. I really enjoyed your reaction. It was a lot of fun watching this with you with all your comments. Thanks!
And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.*
*Side trivia:*
*1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply).*
*2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel.*
*3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move.*
I adored your laughs through this!
“Let me see your war face.”
FMJ reference had me dying of laughter. 😂😂😂😂😂
LOVE your indiana jones hat! 😍 ENJOYED YOUR REACTION! 😁 SO GLAD you watched this, it was GREAT going on this adventure WITH YOU! 👍☺
FYI Brendan Fraser did is own stunts. Love you reaction!
Okay, the “Lemme see your War Face” was a nice homage, and a perfect Ames move!
Awww... you missed my favorite line in the movie! "Oh.... My... God...
The sequel is also a must watch.
Also, the Jumanji series??? You’ll love it.
3 people knew The Mummy needed to suck them dry to regenerate and they also knew The Mummy feared cats. Still amazes me they never thought to keep a cat near each of them.
I really enjoyed your video. This is the first one of yours I've seen. Great job!
The decor of the queuing was AMAZING.

easily one of my favorite movies growing up
The Mummy is an absolute timeless cinematic masterpiece. Peak adventure story, humour, everything. I can watch it anyday, anywhere, anytime, rain or shine.
I sincerely consider this the last great adventure movie we ever got. After this we get a lot of revisionist or deconstructionist adventure movies with a more serious tone. This movie is *fun* and that's what I love about it so much. Even Benny being the little shit that he is still immensely likeable.
Your comment about him needing a breath mint nearly made me spit out my tea :)
I remember when this movie came out it had the best tag line, "This ain't your daddy's mummy!"
Brendan is still in the running for being the best leading man from before the new millennium…… he’s absolutely gorgeous. I will die on that hill… he’s also running against Bill Paxton from 1996’s Twister…..
Those two are baby daddy’s of mine in another universe 😂😂😂😂😂
Was just thinking. The cutting out of his tongue would be a huge curse for ancient Egyptians. As I remember, a part of their afterlife belief is that you have to recite a specific death spell or be doomed .
I thought it was because you had to say your own name when you have to be judged. Ancient Egyptians believed that the name was sacred.
7:23 Not sure why there are no captions on this one but he said "The Desert will kill him"
One of my favourite movies of all time. Watch it all the time.
Since I too love Rachel Weisz, and you tied this to Big Trouble in Little China which I also love, you unquestionably get my worthless gold star of the day! ❤
Thank you for another great reaction. This was fun!
Great adventure. Only thing that I dislike is the plucking job on Rachel Weisz's eyebrows
They may have taken it a smidge too far, but I do prefer the look from the usual.
