  • In this video we will take a look at INS Navigation system of the Viggen. The navigation system is used for various weapons and is a central part of the Viggen. This video should give you a basic introduction into how the navigation system is operated.

    Just bought the Viggen a few days ago and I greatly appreciate your videos. Your way of teaching fits me perfectly. I would be completly lost without them. Hope to see alot more coming, especially on the Viggen. Thanks for the videos so far.

    First off, great video that simply explains how the waypoint system works. For anyone who finds this later: There isn't a mistake in the video but when you're using the radar to select/move a waypoint it's based on a three position switch for [TV|T0|T1]. I have all of these on discrete buttons like many people seem to. What this means it that when you go to [T1] to move the cursor then [TV] to select it you then need to "move" the switch back to [T0] or press whatever you have that set as or else the cursor and waypoint will simply keep moving in front of you since it still thinks you're in T1 slewing mode. At least that's my understanding and what seems to be proven out testing in game.

    In another video they mentioned the flaps, or some other function, that is tied to the wheels. If you raise the wheels to early during takeoff you will loose alot of lift. So you should have them down longer then usual.

    Im used to NATO/WAPA planes and helicopters, so getting into the viggen is a pretty big difference, NAV SYS wise, all though its not years off the old russian style NAVSYS

      Thanks for your kind words! Yeah, considering the age of the aircraft the nav system is very advanced. This video just touches the surface of what it can do. Besides the possiblity of setting additional target waypoints (BXx), search areas for reconnaissance and fuel calculations it can even do time on target calculations as well as timed missile impacts for the Rb04s where the system calculates the time you need to take off to deliver the weapon just at the right time. Cool stuff!

    Tip: Get more altitude before pulling your gear up. When you pull your gear up the flaps comes up too, which makes an airpocket that does not generate any lift.

    Thanks for the informative tutorials. At 19:05 you say that RB-04s will fly toward the updated target waypoint if launched at that moment, but wouldn't it fly in the direction that the aircraft is heading when launched until it detected a target in single or group mode?

    CK-37 is not an INS, an INS is a self contained system that operates based on input from its own accelerometers, which is then integrated twice to obtain position. CK-37 takes data from all the primary sensors of the aircraft (airspeed, attitude, altitude etc.), calculates the TVV and integrates it once. The advantage over INS is that it does not need alignment (the only thing that aligns during startup is the ADI) but if you loose flight instruments the position readout degrades with them (while INS provides position until it is damaged itself)

    Fantastic video, you've done a wonderful job in the Viggen said so far. Glad I found your channel. Are you going to do a tutorial on how to set missile waypoints in the mission editor for the advanced Anti-Ship weapon? I think it's the RB15?

    Hey Jon - is the fly-over update process the same without a 3-position switch? I can't seem to get the manual nav updates to work.

      I think I have seen it mentioned in the forums that the key-command currently only works for the 3-position switch. Hopefully fixed in the next update.

      I have been using three separate buttons on the base of a flight stick. I press first detent as I approach the nav point and 2nd detend as I over fly it. It seems to work fine like this.

    What does the SLAV SI and the HOJD CI SI switches do?

      Either slave the Gyrocompass to the actual compass or use it in unslaved gyro mode.

      SLAV = slave, bind. HOJD i guess is HÖJD - altitude.

    When you change the position of the target waypoint like you did at 19:20, does it act like a radar fix? (Like how one can make a navigation update "fix" using the radar or flying over where a waypoint is supposed to be) Or does it simply change the position of your target waypoint (In this case, M4) and does not change the position of navigation points such as B1, B2, etc.

      No, at 19:20 it does not act like a radar fix, because:
      On normal B Waypoints, doing that would act like a radar fix, and update the navigation system to the new possition.
      On target M Waypoints and target BX Waypoints, doing that does not act like a radar fix. It will only update the location of that waypoint.
      The reason behind that is, that a target waypoint could be off as either the intel is wrong or the target moved, therefore a target is not a very suitable for updating your whole navigation to, like a fixed landmark would be.
      If I hadn't changed the waypoint from the navigation B4 Waypoint to the target M4 Waypoint, doing the movment at 19:20 would have moved our navigation system's reference point. It just depends on how the waypoints are named.

      Oh now I get it ! Thanks for clarifying. I was thinking that moving he target waypoint would mean the whole flight plan would be out . So now I understand. We can fly recon mission online, mark some targets with recon mode and then rearm and head out again and use the recon points co ordinates for our M1 point. Our flight home will still be accurate :) Thanks for making this video. I thought I had the basics worked out but you have helped me alot.

      rawnukles That sounds like a fun strategy for the Viggen! Be careful though because the mavericks can't be re-armed onto the aircraft then actually work (If you think you'll use them for an anti-ship strike that is.)

    Hey Jon, trying to pinpoint your accent, I'm guessing Austrian?
    Just a few questions because I have yet to buy this module:
    1. Does it come with a campaign? I'd really like to see what scenarios Leatherneck have/can come up with.
    2. Is a knowledge of the mission editor required for this aircraft? Considering waypoints are more or less supposed to be pre programmed.

      With regards to you struggling to take off, towards the bottom of the HUD there is some symbology that shows when you're supposed to rotate, a line will increase between the 2 vertical bars, once they intersect, the aircraft hits Vr/V1.

      Your guess is very correct, I am Austrian indeed!
      1. There is no campaing in the open beta yet, however as far as I understood, there will be one soonish. However, currently there are several pre-built missions that seem to be quit advanced. Way beyond my skill level though!
      2. I think the mission editor is the most powerfull training-tool DCS has, as you can set up many diffrent training scenarios within a couple of minutes. Definatly worth trying to get used to it.
      Regarding the Viggen: The pre-built missions don't require the use of the mission editor at all. Neither should any community made missions require you to edit the mission before flying.
      However, it is also important to notice that most of the Viggen's real missions are pre-planned. This is also how the navigation/targeting systems are desinged. There is no taking-off and looking for targets as you would to in the A-10C or the Ka-50. You take-off, fly to your weapon release point, shoot everything you have within .2 of a second and then RTB. In DCS, even if you don't get any waypoints from the mission itselfe, you still can use the F10 map and inputing coordinates by hand to get you to the target. However, if you do it like that in the sim or not is still up to you.
      Thanks for the tip with the speed indication for takeoff. Will check that out!

      +Retrofly from what I've seen it's absolutely possible, but it's obviously not ideal for a strike aircraft such as this.

      There is no "locking-on" with them. They are self guided and try to find their own targets within the target area. The target area is designated by setting a target waypoint (Mx) like shown in the video. My next video will cover this.

      They talked about them in another video, there is several modes - single and multi. Single all goes on 1 target, multi they split up between the targets. They got radar so they are fire and forget. Get close (and low, they have a max cealing for firing) and fire :)

      Well, standard takeoff is with second AFB stage. However, with this load-out more power would have helped...

      There is no standard, it's determined through performance calculations and runway conditions. Zone 2 is fine for a 17-18T plane however the overrotation pretty much killed all the excess thrust you needed to get in the air smoothly.

      It drinks fuel like nobodies buisness, but I use it for takeoff with a full load, can be a bitch to get off the gorund otherwise, you heard the compressor stalls in this vid :D

    i read in the beat manual that its possible to set fix points as waypoints or targetpoints when over fly them and use the radar trigger T0 and T1. Can you tell me how to do this ? F.e online there are often no way points at all,only wide target areas. I like to use the BK90 weapon but need to fly over target 1 time to select a target point...is that possible and how ?
    btw Radar screen is really useless for groundtargets (it shows nothing) and only good for ships, but you have to zoom in a lot !

      You can create target point by just converting waypoints (Bx) to target points (Tx) and then moving them with the radar as shown in the video. If you turn the radar off, pressing the TV Fix trigger will move the currently selected target point to your position.

      I've been doing the same thing. Converting existing waypoints into targets points and placing them on a target with the radar or visually. The manual says you can use Recon mode to create waypoints and points of interest and even create tracking points for ships with bearing and speed.
      I can't figure out how to make it work in game yet though. Fascinating plane with all this dead reckoning fixing ...

      I've just been playing with this but I'm still confused.
      I can turn a nav way point (B1) into a target point (M1).
      But if I go to recon radar mode and create a new point. (M1) yellow M .
      I can't seem to turn it into an attack point.
      To make the recon point I selected recon radar mode and fix trigger a point then click "Bx" then select a number on data pad while IN mode selected.
      The same procedure in NAV mode makes Bx 1-9 points.
      Or yellow "M" points when radar in recon mode.
      It would be great if we could create these recon points and then convert them to attack points and leave the navigation points untouched...

      I don't think that is possible. There is no separate storage of target points M and waypoints B outside of the reccon mode in the AJS-37.
      Therefore, copying those reccon M points over to the attack mode is not possible as you would be overwriting your current waypoints I guess. Easiest way would probably be to read out the coordinates and then use them for new BX point.

      Thats a good idea. It is a dilemma, how to use this plane on multiplayer servers where we can't plan our waypoints...
      But we can take off fly a recon mission, mark some recon points where we find targets and then land and rearm and head out again with the targets marked.
