Really enjoyed this masterclass, I took copious notes and made many diagrams. The progressions are spot on with great coaching points from Dave Coombes, precisely what I need to use as coach at a small, rural club here in Australia. I am the first ever goalkeeper coach at our club and learning as I go along, so grateful for the content you present Conor. Have you other masterclasses that I could view and where might I find them, as I need all the help I can get.

I play football for my school only in the fall, and I have a goalie camp starting today. I haven't been able to play goalie for a few months, but have been staying in shape and keeping my reactions up with basketball. Do you have any tips for me?

19:38 in, if you look at the game Chelsea 6-1 Middlesbrough and Chelsea 2-0 goal. We GK coaches must rethink how we train our young keepers. Why stand at the post, or a few step out from the post when we easy can save a shoot to the post even if we stand slighty more central and have the cheast in a angle towards the field? We all know that the ball will target the players in Golden zone. We cant stand with our backs against the goal. We have to rethink our traning.
This also applies to that block that is always trained in all situations. Look at the first goal and you will see how incredibly bad it is in the penalty area..But still everyone says it's so good.
This is not criticism, but food for thought. Why isn't anyone watching matches at the very highest level and thinking. Are we training the right things? Why are there goals in situations goalkeepers practice on, shouldn't we change something? The outfield players change their game every year and if you look back in time, an incredible amount has happened.
I don't train my goalkeepers to stand at the post on cut backs, and they have increased their save percentage as they are quicker in the center

I appreciate the comment, but I disagree.. If you were to position as you say, and they were to shoot from that cut back angle, it would be very difficult to make the save. And as Dave says in the video, rather than positioning yourself like that, and just waiting for a very difficult close range shot from a central area, at least being positioned at your front post gives you the opportunity to cut out the cross or cutback
@@ConorOKeefe Okay, but how often does the shot hit the front post? When, for example, the striker has a back who covers, and it is cut backs that the outfield players train on. To put the ball in centrally, cut backs. Look at the second goal that Chelsea scores. According to you, he is standing exactly right, but still he is not close to saving the shot. So according to you, there is a greater chance that the shot will hit the first post than that it will be a cut back? Why then do you train on cut backs, if there is a greater chance that the shot will hit the post? It is contradictory.
We need to develop training for the game that takes place during matches. Not doing as we have always done. It's just a matter of watching matches every weekend and building the training on that. I'm not saying you shouldn't cover the post, but the goalkeeper can absolutely save a finish that goes towards the post even if you stand a little more centrally with your chest angled. Then the chance of following laterally on the cut back increases Or in what way would it not be possible to save at the post if you stand at an angle to increase the possibility of saving shots from straight ahead?
@@74Walle I understand your point, but the reason that there are very few shots to the front post is because the Goalkeepers are often there. How many cut backs in games are cut out by defenders or missed? A lot more than are scored.
We would never really know a true comparison until you could assess GKs that don’t come to the front post - I would guess that this would result in many more shots to that area than there are currently
But I appreciate the debate, even if we don’t agree, it’s great to hear other goalkeeping points of view!

In my opinion, it's outdated to teach goalkeepers to go down with one leg on low balls. Why do they do this? Otherwise, a super interesting video!
I don't do it myself, I think it's protect against the ball going through the legs, but I find that it restricts my movement too much!
