Lord, let Your Word guide us and shape our hearts to mirror Your own. Please teach us Your ways and grant us the grace to walk in them with humility and great love for You. Help us to love You more every day so that we can one day love You perfectly in heaven.

Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, deciding, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand God's voice in the Scriptures that we may revere & treasure both the Old & the New Testaments which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. May our hearts never grow dull & may our ears never tire of listening to your voice. Amen. ❤
I was baptized October 1979 I left the church thst was the biggest mistake of my life I did many confessions I've been back in the church 13 months .i am practicing Catholic.

I love the gospels so much. In Mark, I love the immediacy of language & the action orientation. At first it doesn’t seem to have deep theology until you start meditating on what it says. Jesus read the thoughts of the scribes & Pharisees when they thought who can forgive sins but God alone. Then to show them He was indeed God & could forgive sin, Jesus challenges their unspoken thoughts to prove He can forgive sin He heals the man’s paralysis! Who can heal like that but God?

It is amazing how you hear a message (that you may have heard before) yet with your enthusiasm, your “current” references (Chip & JoAnna) that make me smile, and just the tone of your voice which reflects your love for the Lord….makes it all brand new! You are a blessing to us all…I am praying for you and us all.
We have just returned from the Holy Land. I loved the Sea of Galilee and the surrounding areas, Capernaum, the synagogue, the house of Peter's Mother in Law, the Mount of Beatitudes, Magdala, the Jordan River, Cana and beyond. To walk where Jesus walked, to see what He saw, to know He spent a large part of His public ministry there, just felt so good, and these first two chapters of Mark come alive to me. Praise God we have the Gospel of Mark today. My takeaway from my trip is that Jesus lives in my heart and is present to me in the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. I did not have to travel to the Holy Land to "find" Jesus, but the experience is giving a visual to me as I hear and read Scripture, as I pray the Mass and the Mysteries of the Rosary, and make the Stations of the Cross. Lord, thank you for the Incarnation of Jesus, for His Life, Death and Resurrection to forgive our sins and reconcile us to you. Amen.

i've read the Gospel of Mark maybe 3 or 4x before. i didn't even noticed that he loved the word 'immediately'. all i know is that it is the shortest of the 4. thanks Father Mike and Jeff for all the insights that you share to us.

I was baptized in the Catholic church. Since I was not baptized as a baby I was an adult They give you a sponsor the one that I chose was my high school classmate. I was gone for the church for thirteen years and I return I've been baff for fifteen months I was married in the Catholic Church . All my children we're baptized Catholic church. My twin boys fourteen years old my daughter 16 years old. Make sure all that was done to all my children.
The role of the Godparents is so important and makes total sense that their faith is used to speak for them. In today's society baptism can be just another social gathering and the true meaning of the event is missed out. The touching of unclean things makes marks clean things and the image of Jesus' healing handing being placed upon the sick is for me an amazing image and I pray he places his hands on me and all who are following this bible in a year. Amen x
Actually, it's the Church's faith that come into place at infant baptism. Given that there are parents and godparents who don't care much about the faith, that's probably for the better.

Day 154..Yes, another messianic checkpoint!
I've always liked Mark's gospel, actually took a course on his version and learned many things..must have been amazing that John (the Baptist) knew that the Messiah was coming, and he was born to bare witness to this.
I've often thought the same of Simeon, when he saw Mary and Joseph bringing Jesus to the temple..did John think to himself, now I can die, after the Baptism of Jesus, I've completed what I was born to do?
Hopefully we'll all know we see them someday!!!
So much going on here in just the first couple of chapters! This is like, all facts and matter. If one just learned from this gospel, they could know alot about our Lord.
The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and his soul hates him that loves violence..for the Lord is righteous, he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.

Yes, John did say that, he said that Jesus must increase and he John must decrease and not too long after , John was executed, he finished what he came to do.

I really appreciate Fr Mike pointing out here that Mark goes back and forth between past and present tense. What a valuable awareness for us to have as we read Mark. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.
The concept of the vicarious faith of the friends calls Jesus to heal the afflicted man - good justification of infant baptism

So good to be back in the Gospels, I look at quite a lot of faith based stuff on you tube, and make notes if it gets my interest, one thing I learned about the four Gospels was this, they reflect the four faces of Jesus on the throne of God.
Matthew portrays Jesus as King, lineage from Abraham and David valid kingship. = LION
Mark portrays Jesus as a servant. = OX
Luke portrays Jesus as a man, lineage from Adam. = MAN
John portrays Jesus as God, no genealogy = EAGLE
Interesting about it being the Gospel of Peter, I will note that one down ! loved this reading today, thank you.

It is an excellent episode about Mark’s gospel, Jesus’ baptism, and how He made the Baptism holy.
*Loved learning the facts about Mark and the Gospel. Mark (Jewish name, John) being Simon Peter’s travel companion throughout the Middle East as well as Europe and the gospel being Peter’s experience of Jesus’ story. Mark and St. Paul is having some issues, then Barnabus is taking his side. Mark, Matthew, and Luke Gospels are similar (synoptic) Gospels with Mark's gospel as the base / template for Matthew and Luke. John's gospel is quite opposite of Mark as Mark is shortest, while John has long readings and teachings of Jesus. “Immediately” is a favorite word of Mark showing the immediacy and urgency of Jesus' actions/messiah. The past tense and the present tense are getting mixed (Mark 1: 40 to 44)- Jesus’ story, and the miracles are indeed happening today (are still relevant) as they had happened before.
* Like the reconciliation between Mark, St. Paul, Peter, and Barnabus, we all Christ followers are indeed made to love each other despite our imperfections. Together , we are stronger against the devil, and together, we can help spread the Gospels.
* Psalm 11- The Song of Trust in God- An energizing Psalm!
* Yes, Jesus’ baptism was not for His remission of sins, but it was anointment of Jesus as the King, like David. Through Jesus’ baptism, the baptism waters and the process became Holy.
* Loved knowing the connection between the Heaven being torn apart when Jesus was baptized and then when the temple cloth was torn apart when Jesus was crucified.

I never thought about it would Jesus was that heptize so the people that go in that same water will be made clean. Also I think another reason Jesus was baptized. It's showing us what we need to do.
For the origin of the synoptic gospels: the Church Fathers rejected the Mark as the first gospel and Matthew and Luke take from him. The Church Fathers stated the the written order of the gospels is the same as they are in most bibles: Matthew first (probably in Hebrew, then rewritten or translated into Greek) then Mark, then Luke, lastly John.
