Benton might have been a hard ass dr but he very good and he Carter was his baby dr that he took care of. No matter how much he fought against showing favorites
Benton's "Is he conscious!?" gets me every time. Peter and Carter had a true mentor/student loving relationship that developed really well. Can you imagine when he got that call, and they said it was Lucy and Carter - I wished we could see THAT. He had to have bolted to the elevator, pushed the button and then ran for the stairs when the doors didn't immediately open.
i love the "untold" bits of that tiny moment, you hear the elevator ding as it arrives in the ER, meaning it was on its way down from 3 when brenton got the call, he missed it and no way he's waiting so he bolts down 3 flights of stairs..
Peter Benton at his best. NOTHING was going to stop him from Carter. Both ER groups needing Benton to stabilize Carter and Lucy. As a kid, I remember Mom calling friends saying she won't be sane until Thursday. Awesome supporting cast.
I’ll never forget seeing this episode for the first time. When Benton was running down the stairs to the ER, I was literally saying to the tv, “Go, Peter, go, Peter, go!!!” As an RN working full-time, I always felt exhausted after watching ER. Felt like I just worked a shift. My nurse brain never turned off. Excellent medical writing. (most of the time, I caught them in an error every now now and then, but it wasn’t often.)
This episode is so powerful, I gotta say Carter is my absolute favorite and this was so hard to see him like this.. And the way Benton ran down there and went right to Carter, that shows just how close and how much he truly cared about him... I give this show 100 out of 10!!
man that camera work going from the cop picking up the perp's chart, to benton running down the stairs into the exam room... just so fast-paced and dynamic for TV back then. The impact that ER had on modern TV is undeniable.
One little thing I loved about Jing-Mei and Carter's relationship is that she's the only one who regularly calls him John, and he's one of few people she let continue to call her Deb after she changed her name. Their rivalry-to-friendship was so fun to watch develop.

I love Greys but it really is apples and oranges. Grey's anatomy is about the surgeon's lives while they are surgeons, i.e. medical soap opera but ER was at least 80% about the medicine I think. These two episodes were my favorites. Back then we didn't get to know 100% of why a person was killed off but turns out Kellie Martin had a family member die and would get panic attacks and therefore requested to be let go. I just love how Benton, who never shows emotion, finally shows how much he loves Carter. Best bromance there ever was.
I hadn’t watched the episode in years, and popped it on s few years ago. Seeing him just running flooded my thoughts of how Benton and Carter’s growth was one thing I kept watching the show for.

Considering that Lucy was stabbed multiple times she managed to last long. Really scary. She was stabbed 4 or 5 times. One in her neck, chest, and abdomen. She knew she was dying. She was a med student and she knew what her injuries would lead to.
@@amandasmith2399 that I know. Carter was lucky that he survived. As Carter explained to Banfield 'he lost function in his left kidney and he went to Africa few years. He had another kidney condition.
If you remember though, Lucy was awake longer, she and Carter passed out at the same time, meaning that Carter's injury's were more severe for blood loss, while Lucy's were slower (that being said, we dont' know how long Lucy was lying on the floor before Cater walked in). But in the end, Carter's injuries were able to be repaired whereas Lucy's were not, though her prognosis was initially better than Carter's. They both had fatal wounds - but Carter's were found and repaired in time. I always wonder if Carter had found Lucy and instead of Paul stabbing him, it was just Lucy that got stabbed (and the actress wasn't leaving) if it would have saved her or if the time between when Carter got stabbed and they found them made a difference in Lucy living or dying.
When Carter turns and looks at Lucy, then all of a sudden al noises and voices are gone except the cardiac machine...chills to the bone! Standing ovation for the director of this episode

For me it’s the most impressive episode of the entire series… my favorite character is Carter so you can imagine how I felt the first time I saw it… it’s very impressive seeing it even today… the emotions are well played by these great actors…
This episode became a whole new level of emotional for me when I had a similar experience in the hospital I worked. It has taken me 15 years to watch it again, and right now I’m a bit of a crying mess...
My dear Lady, that is proof that you and a great many others who work in situations like that and ICU, CCU, you are not made of stone. I saw many nurses break down quietly when a patient they know is dying, the family around them - it is very emotional for all.
Kidney transplant happened because he went to Africa and caught an infection. Hathaway and Ross organized the kidney and they just knew that some doctor in Chicago received it. Of course the starting point was the stab wound.
One of the best TV episodes ever!! So much drama, action and great acting... all showing realistic, intense emotion. I liked how Benton was so worried and emotional over Carter. And how Dr Weaver’s performance was brilliant!! Very intense and mesmerising moments.
Because as much as this show was about the drama of working in the ER, it was also about their lives. We grew to love each of these characters. The only other television show of that time that was able to do the same thing in my opinion was NYPD Blue.
Benton really truly cared for Carter. Carter wasn't his style, but he knew that he had the passion for the job. He was going to make sure Carter lived and there was nothing, but God himself, could do to stop him.
Wasn’t talking about style in terms of practicing medicine. Talking about the way he carries himself. Benton and Carter are dissimilar in terms of personality, which is why they clashed a lot early. Like I said, Benton saw that Carter truly cared for the job and the patients.
Benton and Carter had a great mentor/ student relationship and yes they clashed in the early days. However as you can see here he cared about him a lot and in the seasons that followed he helped him get help for addiction and was there when he needed a kidney due to one failing as a result of what you see in this episode many years later near the end of the series. They ended up having a kind of father/ son sort of relationship.
I always liked the Benton/Carter relationship. Seeing Benton charging down the stairs like that is a reminder of how much better we all can be to each other.
@@sugaloaf9889 The camera work, the mix of frenetic activity with the quiet moments where you have a brief moment to catch your breathe and then bang, back into another crisis, accompanied by one of the most excellent TV music scores, all added to the suspense and adrenaline surges!
When the police officer was trying to ask questions while Carter was conscious but far from stable, I can empathize with that situation. After having held pressure on a patient’s arm to stop the severe bleeding in a one small but deep cut, a police officer appeared and began to read the patient the Miranda Rights. This made the patient tense his arm and the new blood clot shot out of the arm and went up to the ceiling. While I again put pressure over the wound (which was bleeding freely again), the officer was removed from the ER! Back when this happened (over 40 years ago), night shift personnel included me and one other staff person. You can imagine how hectic things were.
Well in fairness its not remotely the same thing. If the cop was reading the patient miranda warnings that means it was someone under arrest and that could have waited. The cop in this episode was trying to find out who stabbed him because the guy was still on the loose somewhere in the hospital and they had to know who they were looking for before he killed somebody else. Also a more grim reason is because they need his statement for evidence and if he dies they won't be able to get it and maybe not be able to prove the guy murdered him.
It made me tear up this episode. Even Alex Kingston (Elizabeth Corday) couldn’t stop crying during a scene when Lucy whispered. I would too. I made me value life more.
If I ever get stabbed I would like Eriq Lasalle to reprise his role as Benton and operate on me. Best surgeon there, even better than Romano and Corday.
Corday with the cop would have been me: I'd be soooooooo "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!" When she says "HEEEEEEEEEEEREEEEE!!!" I'm like YES THANK YOU! GO LIZZIE!
Jhon's evolution and painful process of both recovery and guilt for Lucy's death is impressive since they had many frictions in their relationship as mentor and student, here he shows that deep down he cared for her and more because before the attack he It had caught her attention and she had left her alone with the patient who attacked them. It is also amazing how at the end of the sixth season we found out about John's drug addiction and how Peter Beanton accompanies him to the rehab clinic in Atlanta and We can also see the impact that Dr. Mark Greene had on him since later in the remaining seasons Jhon had with the other students and residents. a very realistic character in this show and the actuation of Noah Wyle is amazing
You're lucky. You don't have to wait between episodes. We had to wait a whole week between seeing Carter and Lucy get stabbed before we could find out what was going to happen. There was no binge watching them.
I just ordered a DVD player to watch this show again. I loved the character of Lucy and I'm so excited to watch season 5 & 6 again soon. But this episode is heartbreaking!
Only notice on the millionth rewatch that this short scene shows multiple ways how “in the way” the cops are for the medical team in this moment - starting with Benton literally running into one. I know they’re both trying to do their jobs but I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be for ER doctors in real life
Ellen Crawford as Lydia turned in such a great performance in this ep, albeit much more subdued than the main cast. She's composed, competent as ever, but just barely holding it together and on the brink of tears as she helps work on Carter. Maura Tierney was amazing too, staying brisk and focused until she finds the knife and has to have that little moment to herself in the supply room. This entire cast was incredible.
Damn, was this ever a emotionally powerful episode. The pain, concern, and and panic in the eyes of all of the doctors & nurses trying to save Lucy & Carter was top-notch!
One of the most heart wrenching episodes of ER. To think that Carter would be the one to survive from his injuries and Lucy would die from hers. How the whole team came together to save to people that where part of their family and knowing that they where going to lose one. Very sad and heartbreaking. 👨⚕️👩⚕️🗡🧑😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This was the most intense episode I ever watched. I remember at the end of the previous episode, both Carter and Lucy on the floor. Then Lucy died and I bawled like a baby.
Same, myself, my mother and my girlfriend saw it when I was a teenager and even I cried till I couldn't cry anymore, my brother came in right as lucy flatilined and he cursed up a storm, he started watching 3 weeks before thus episode came on the first time.
This show firing at all f*cking cylinders, why it's one of the best. The performances, writing, camera work, even the scoring, top notch. One my favorite parts is them weaving (no pun intended) the scary tone into the score,
The one vital thing about this episode that no one mentions, Benton was faced with a hard choice between saving Carter or Lucy. He kept being pulled back and forth into each room and for the last room pull, Benton paused and looked in Carter's room & then Lucy's room. He chose to fully focus on saving Carter. That was a hard decision for him.
I mean it wasn't a hard decision, he was told to go bc Corday was on her way. He also preferred to be with Carter let's admit that lol. It annoyed me later in the episode when he was slow to help Cleo's patient, and wondered where Corday was - DUH, SHES WITH LUCY!!!!!! But he loved Carter so I do understand.
TV has changed. Along with many fewer viewers, we'll never see 20+ episodes of a show per year (over the course of 15 years!), enough to really get this deeply involved with such well-developed characters.
Watched this when it originally aired. Took me days to get over this episode .... It was one of the saddest and most horrific episodes - and yet one of the best ....
Wow! This still gets my heart everytime ! You knew these guys were family to each other and what they had to do was so extremely hard on them because of their love for one another. But they go beyond their best to do everything humanely possible to save them.
The way Malucci says "Look at this, look at this". He is so angry that someone stab Lucy so many times =/ I also like how Elizabeth is nervous, but Mark remains calma
I've worked in many hospitals in large cities and states. You wouldn't believe how many deaths have accurred because items are not where they should be or not been around at all. ALSO, before your small child or infant NEEDS the ED make SURE they can adequately care for your little one, you'd be surprised how many are not. Very true fact!!!!
*tenderly* Ohhh, I know…..pretty much as soon as he opened his eyes and asked about Lucy, that was the last thing he remembered before getting stabbed was her 😔

Nice thought. But if it was me I think I'd rather have a real surgeon working on me instead of an actor
Romano was the best surgeon in the hospital. Total prick, but the best which is why he was chief.
Benton was also exceptional.
This episode wrecked me. I was only 14 when I watched it and I cried for a week.
Corday with the cop would have been me: I'd be soooooooo "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!" When she says "HEEEEEEEEEEEREEEEE!!!" I'm like YES THANK YOU! GO LIZZIE!
Had me hype when Peter came down those stairs
I’m literally 12 and my mom showed me this show and I’m in love with it now
You're lucky.
One of the best dr benton scenes. He came a long way. In the first episode they didnt want him to do anything but now he is the most wanted man.
ER was FANTASTIC!!!
Benton is one of the greatest characters ever put on screen.
I watched this show as a teen and just liked it. Now Im in Nursing school and actually understand everything their doing and what they are saying.
One of the few times Romano shows his humanity
by far the best episode of TV I have ever seen
I cried so hard during these episodes. They song they played during this still haunts me.
After all this years I still cry when I watch this episode!
Same. I didn’t watch this show religiously, but I watched this episode from beginning to end. It is a rough one. Gets me every time.
Same, myself, my mother and my girlfriend saw it when I was a teenager and even I cried till I couldn't cry anymore, my brother came in right as lucy flatilined and he cursed up a storm, he started watching 3 weeks before thus episode came on the first time.
One of the best episodes ever.
I love Benton and Carters friendship. They were the first Surgery Bromance.
Gods this show kept kicking me in the feels every single time
Some of the finest moments in the history of television in this episode.
This show firing at all f*cking cylinders, why it's one of the best. The performances, writing, camera work, even the scoring, top notch. One my favorite parts is them weaving (no pun intended) the scary tone into the score,
can we all appreciate the amazing soundtrack?
ER was great show to watch. No other show beat them. It look so real ER all Dr. And Nurses did great job. I still watch it the reruns. 👍😷🏥🚑
Rewatching after years and it takes me right back, tears and ..... goosebumps. So so sad 😞
No, he asked Carrie if she had another surgeon coming and she told him yes and to go.
GOD I MISS THIS SHOW!!!
TV has changed. Along with many fewer viewers, we'll never see 20+ episodes of a show per year (over the course of 15 years!), enough to really get this deeply involved with such well-developed characters.
Still watch it every day.
I miss this show. My kind of show
Watched this when it originally aired. Took me days to get over this episode .... It was one of the saddest and most horrific episodes - and yet one of the best ....
ER is the medical drama that all other medical dramas wish they could be.
I didn't watch this show but this episode had me riveted. I even cried when Lucy died.
Wow! This still gets my heart everytime ! You knew these guys were family to each other and what they had to do was so extremely hard on them because of their love for one another. But they go beyond their best to do everything humanely possible to save them.
this is one of my favorite episodes from ER
ER is BETTER THAN GREYS ANATOMY
God I fucking love Carter and Benton's relationship
Benton carter relationship was great goes to show how benton concerned for carter and how he worked to help his former student
Still love the fact that Dr. Benton worked on his student! That's a real doc! Been there... done that!
The way Malucci says "Look at this, look at this". He is so angry that someone stab Lucy so many times =/
I also like how Elizabeth is nervous, but Mark remains calma
I could never be an ER doctor. I like stressful situations but not that stressful.
This is my fav episode,I wasn't going to cry till I see Benton come in the room
This shows how much Peter cared about Carter he just ran full speed in there
Nice camera tracking work.
This episode I distinctly remembered.
The way Carter was so worried saying ' Is that Lucy🥺😨'
*tenderly* Ohhh, I know…..pretty much as soon as he opened his eyes and asked about Lucy, that was the last thing he remembered before getting stabbed was her 😔
ER is the best ever of any medical show…just the best…ER, NYPD Blue, The West Wing
