The connection between Carter and Benton was arguably one of the biggest draws of the show - it outlasted the departures of other doctors and still stayed strong through the entirety of the series.
I mean, that's what made all of the early season characters so good. They all felt like real people. They had flaws, some of them bigger than others, but they also all had redeeming traits. Even the characters I hated like Romano and Weaver. The reason the later seasons struggled was the writers couldn't match the depth of these characters.
He cared about Carter so much he flew with him. Even in the meeting room you can see how quiet but hopeful Benton is. There is no way he would let that kid ruin his life
I just started binge-watching the show on HBO Max and I love the relationship between Benton and Carter. Benton's hard on him, but it's only 'cause he genuinely cares for him.
The only person to not speak in the room, yet had the strongest voice in the end. Benton was rough around the edges, but he really did have a heart of gold. I loved this show!
I've only seen Benton do that tender little side-of-the-head kiss he does with one other male on the show, and that was his son. He loves Carter so much. I always lose it with this scene

The way Carter clung to Benton so desperately...that's when I lost it completely. It's clear that Carter grew up in an emotionally constipated environment so I've always thought it was so ironic that someone as emotionally restrained as Benton would be the perfect 'big brother'/mentor for Carter. They had amazing chemistry and I loved that Peter was the one who was there for Carter when his life was probably at its lowest point and then again with the kidney transplant storyline. Amazing acting this wonderful cast and brilliant writing.
DarlingNikki2 i frequently tell people that Benton saved Carter’s life 3 times. Operating on him after the stabbing, interjecting during his transplant ... and getting him in that van. I think what made the first 8 seasons of the show so special was that it wasn’t just rooted in romantic relationships. The friendships were just as important.
Aaron Burgin when it was apparent to me was when he was working on Carter right after the stabbing. When he was told what happened, he went to Carter, to Lucy, & back to Carter. Carter knew he would be fine when he saw that Benton was the doctor working on him.
The costuming in this scene is very telling. Mark, Deb, Weaver, and Anspaugh are all dressed as doctors, lab-coats/equipment etc, and they all speak in terms of what he could lose in his job/career. Benton is dressed as a “civilian”, and is the one who follows him as he tries to leave, and is the one who taps into a baser level of human feeling, which is why Carter lashes out and hits him. But also why Carter accepts his help. Just a lovely detail in a very powerful scene.
The acting in this scene is phenomenal. You can see how uncomfortable Carter is when he realises what's about to happen. He knows there's no point in denying it, but he still doesn't want to admit it, because he's ashamed, and you can see it so clearly in his body language. Just the way when he shrugs, his arm hits the blinds, because that's how it is in real life, things don't go smooth for the sake of a dramatic movie scene. I also love how he fights the tears two times before he finally gives in and cries and shows his emotions. Before that he's just gone on autopilot, shoving the emotions away. All those little details is what makes the dramatic scenes of ER so good. You actually feel what the characters feel. Most other shows just try to make scenes like this as dramatic as possible with characters screaming and crying hysterically.
Amazing comment "chef kiss" hitting the blinder was probably a mistake by N. Wyle but they didn't stop the scene. But yeah I like it, it shouldn't be perfect like it's more realistic.
Benton didn’t just put Carter on the plane. He actually went with him. One of the few scenes where you can see that despite everything he does care about Carter A LOT.
Yeah in today's shows everything is personal, everyone thinks about themselves not the others. It is what we see in the real world but you we don't want to watch that on the TV too

Anyone can "succeed" in rehab so long as you play by the rules. They tell you everything you need to know in the first 48 hours. The next 28 days are just a repeat and for the individual to dry/clean out. Rehabs aren't about actual healing. They've become money making ventures so long as the insurance companies continue to pay out
Benton was the truest friend ever, being willing to throw the hard words at Carter when he needed to have it happen. Carter was in friggin' denial all the way up to that sidewalk, so Benton knew he had to hit him where it hurt -- and it worked.
I love how when Carter first enters the next shot is Benton looking straight at him. Out of all the people in that room he respected Benton the most and the disappointment on Benton's face is so apparent. When Carter breaks down it's so heartwarming how Peter embraces him like family.
For someone that been through a Sb going through addiction to Opioids and pain killers this episode really hit close to home.. First your blindsided by the people who care about you, then you lie, then you’re in denial, then your angry, then frustrated, then emotional... This episode hit an addictive person right on the money.. Praying for anyone who has this issue. It’s not fun.
It’s truly touching to see how much everyone cares for Carter, especially Mark, Kerry, and Peter. They did everything they could to help him get better.
I'm glad that Benton not only was able to get him onto the plane but actually got on with him. One of my favorite scenes of this show, just so emotional.
I haven't watched this show since I was like 10 years old. Just watched this scene, and started crying at the end... I need to rewatch this show as an adult.
Andrew, absolutely have to agree with you. This scene brought tears to my eyes. Maybe one of the first times that I actually saw Benton as being a caring individual.
Another great one is when Benton transfers to another hospital “Hey Peter, I’m a good doctor because of you.” “No you’re not but keep trying.” Even as he walks out the door Benton still pushes Carter to work harder.
I always cry when Carter cries! When Carter cries, you know something is seriously wrong! Carter and Benton were my favorites, and Carter took Lucy's death so hard! But this great Dr. overcame it all! And he went through renal failure, and the death of his son Joshua! Rest in peace Joshua! Even though this show was a drama, it felt like the characters were so real! To me this show was the best show that ever aired, and there will never be a better show than ER!
ANSPAUGH: "Is that it?" BENTON: "No." (Read: "Hell, no.") The only person who could have possibly gotten through to Carter in that moment was Benton, and he did. This story arc really showcased the respect and care these two men have for each other. It's beautiful and humbling.
I remember watching this episode back in 2010 when I was 15, this storyline was one of my favourites and Carter was my favourite character. I remember thinking how well they portrayed addiction, despite being 15 with no experience or thorough understanding of addiction, this scene was extremely powerful and it stuck with me. I'm now 27, and 12 years after first watching this scene here I am again, re-watching it, except this time with my own personal experience with addiction to painkillers. I didn't think it was possible for this scene to be even more powerful but watching it now with a deeper understanding of just how Carter feels, god this is one of my favourite scenes of all time in any TV series or movie. It will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I watched this years ago. Never knowing the pain of addiction. Im 40 broke my back at 18 and have been an addict to codeine/ morphine for a while. The drs in the UK used to just throw medication at you. Never monitoring you. I love this clip because they all cared about them. Am struggling badly. I still work full time and everything but it is evil. I wish u all the best.x
I watched it as a teen when it originally aired. I had a lot of experience with addiction by that point, multiple adults in my immediate and extended family, and I also thought it was very well done. This is the first time I’m rewatching it but it’s stuck with me all this time. I think I’m gonna binge the series, I’ve never rewatched it.

I kind of feel bad for Carter, there's so much loss and pain in his life. His brother died at a very young age, his mother became very distant, his cousin had an overdose, he and Lucy get stabbed and she dies before he can apologize for his misjudgement, Mark Greene passes away, and then his son dies. I mean the guy can't even catch a break. But I will say he does try to have a bit of a positive attitude throughout most of the series, he I think grows the most throughout the show.
Dennis Gants death is why I couldn’t understand why he treated Lucy so badly. He saw first hand what a mentor treating somebody so harshly could lead to. I know he had just had his heartbroken by Anna but that was no excuse.
@@piperjaycie Everybody's different and treats issues differently, Lucy had a lot more resiliency with how she treated her patients more so than Gant did. I also think by the time season 5 and 6 came around Carter started to come a little bit more confident with himself but that confidence started to go to borderline arrogance with his students and that guilt from his own arrogance is what led to him having this downfall at the end of season 6.

Teacher and apprentice became a blood brothers relationship. Once you respect someone that inner voice inside you always listens to what they have to say.
One of the things this story revealed was that Carter was never allowed to ask for help growing up. He was always the dependable one, and when he is the one who needed help, he couldn’t ask for it.
@@Harry-bn5mp You have to be kidding, right? If he was some hermit living in a cave, without anybody depending on him, you might have a case. Carter could be an ambulance driver and this shit would need to get addressed pretty much the same way. Not to mention that outside of the people in the room genuinely caring for him, their heads would role if he ended up seriously hurting or killing a patient later on.
I love Carter and Peters relationship.....There amazing friends......Peter really cares about him.......Getting on a plane with him.......And making sure he gets the help he needs.......Thats a true friend........
I still remember that scene when he takes the pain pill right after his first back and then rushes to the bathroom to spit it out. The acting was amazing!
Carter is one of the lucky ones. An addict with people around him who care about him and who have the medical knowledge of how to deal with it. I didn't have that. In fact, my brother told me no when I asked him for help. His wife is a doctor. I had to hit rock bottom on my own and decide it was time to get help on my own. It's the most effective way, granted. But certainly the least pleasant, apart from dying due to overdosing. I'm just grateful that my mother decided to emigrate to The Netherlands from Poland, before I was born, so that I could have decent healthcare and many opportunities.
The relationship between those two was one of the best parts of the show. Two guys who couldn't stand each other in the beginning, became the most inseparable of friends. What a story, told so well.
It took rewatching the show to realize that Benton and Carter were really the best characters to watch 2 phenomenal actors performing at a stellar rate. Benton really becomes more nurturing and kinder to Carter once he himself becomes a father. But always Carter was this little annoying brother to him, especially in the beginning, but eventually involves it evolves into a very deep brotherly love and bond The early season where Carter wants Benton to come to his family graduation,. Benton is too arrogant to even realize that Carter really wants him to come bcause he highly admires him as a friend. And then you see the evolution of their bond, when Carter gets stabbed in season. 6 Benton is going crazy to save him him running down the stairs still give me goosebumps, it's very adorable
This scene always brings me to tears. I love how Benton is the only one that can reach Carter, and especially as he was Carter's mentor over the years. It's quite fitting and both Actors were at the Supreme top of their game here. I miss when this show was on. I watched all of these episodes the nights they originally aired. You were NOBODY is you mjissed an episode and couldn't talk about it the next Friday morning.
Benton reminds me of my husband. Always the quietest with the loudest influence. I have to remind him of how powerful his voice is especially with our children

I love weaver in this scene. Because you can see her affliction for him not following her rules. She who likes to be in control of everything. I also love that she stays in his way for him not tô leave. IF one thing she ever demonstrated was that she would not run away from a fight.
I found the intervention scene really painful to watch at the time. It's probably what Carter needed at that point, but so many people in the room facing him, forcing him to retreat in the corner where Sobriki had been waiting for him, I don't know... maybe they could have been a bit more "gentle" and thought it through a bit more? Without Benton being a true friend and running after him, that intervention could really have caused more harm than good.
Yes that is why you have to be careful with interventions ..They can cause the other person to go off the deep end ??? And most workplaces in today's world look the other way..As long was the performance is not effected .. XD
The relationship between them is dynamic..(LaSalle and whyle). Such a great show and it still stands the test of time so many great actors and actresses got to show what they had in range and they ended up having amazing careers, goes to show when you have a perfect trifecta of actors, writers and producers you end up with long lasting tv gold. Love this show .
What stings even more than being in the same room as the patient that stabbed him and Lucy is that he’s going to Atlanta for 90 days, where Dennis Gant was from before moving to Chicago.
Yeah that story line was so sad. Poor Gant had no support and was in a super competitive and harsh environment with no one to back him up. Pressure like that must be horrendous. This is what I love about ER is the fact that they tackled so many uncomfortable topics, topics that are still having to be challenged now, let alone the 20 odd years ago.
I was a teenager in school 30 years ago (omg)but made sure I was in front of the TV every Thursday to watch ER for years! I want to binge watch as an adult seeing it with new eyes. No matter how many hospital shows made, ER is king!

The friendship that Benton and Carter formed throughout the seasons was amazing to watch. He understood what he needed to say to Carter in order to get him to rehab. He was scared when Carter was stabbed and almost died. Out of anyone in the hospital (besides Cleo) he truly ended up caring for Carter.
Benton and Carter had such a deep amount of respect for each other. i remember towards the end when Carter had the surgery and Benton was in the private sector and the moment they shared was so awesome. after all that time their relationship was still stronger than ever. great show, if you haven't seen it, stream it!
Night flight to Atlanta. I remember the "old days" (before airplanes became like crammed sardine cans). It was great to fly at night. The peace and quiet of that interval in time. Once I was on a flight with less than 20 passengers. So fantastic to have the whole row to myself and all the attention.
Having lost several classmates I went to school with because of addictions this is very still relevant storyline. it's amazing and it speaks to the power of the show and the writing and acting ability of the show that a show that started in 1994 ended in 2009 12 years later still has storylines that are relevant today. I don't know what that says about our society as a whole the fact that the storylines are still so relevant but the fact that they are speaks to the strength of the show and how it dealt with a real issues and actually accurately showed for the most part the human consequences of behavior.
This is the best episode ever. I constituted tough love from so many people, that is to save the one (Carter). This is ER’s best storyline ever…The world needs more loving tough love.
I think all need a Peter Benton is our lives. Someone that won’t let us be subpar, someone that always demands us to be excellent in the things we do, someone that we can respect. And can breath life into us
The problem with Grey's Anatomy is that they tried tirelessly to recreate the Lucy Knight thing, which is fine if you're doing it once or twice but they do it with like almost every other character and a lot of the ways they kill off some of those people is just ridiculous.

This was perfectly written: Carter brings up what all addicts bring up when it wasn't to a point beyond lost hope yet: he brings up that nothing has suffered from his job and performance so he therefore doesn't have a drug "problem" which is what they were all accusing him of. Its almost like he was saying/challenging them and saying "I may have a drug "dependency" right now... but it hasn't been a "problem"..." They like to throw the exact words and what they "technically" mean back at thise helping them
I love this scene, so much! The emotions look so genuine, particularly between Carter and Benton by the van. These two had such a brilliant arc together!!
When Carter asked "Is he fired" if won't go to rehab and Dr. Green nodded Benton's reaction said it all. He knows Carter doesn't like being put in the corner and will fight to the end to get out from there

Probably the show’s most complex character, and La Salle just played him on so many levels it was mastery as a television actor.

Exactly. Which is why Noah was such a dynamo for ER's flow - he killed all the subtle pieces of the emotional spectrum between calm and intense.

I love how when Carter first enters the next shot is Benton looking straight at him. Out of all the people in that room he respected Benton the most and the disappointment on Benton's face is so apparent. When Carter breaks down it's so heartwarming how Peter embraces him like family.
There’s no better scene than 4:48 as camera slowly pans right and you see Benton was on the plane with him - accompanying his best friend to rehab.
I remember watching this scene. It stuck with me for so long. It's like one of the most poignant scenes of ER.

For someone that been through a Sb going through addiction to Opioids and pain killers this episode really hit close to home.. First your blindsided by the people who care about you, then you lie, then you’re in denial, then your angry, then frustrated, then emotional... This episode hit an addictive person right on the money.. Praying for anyone who has this issue. It’s not fun.

Poor Carter. He felt so guilty over not being able to help Lucy. He could be an ass at times but I felt so sorry for him.
And having gotten stabbed himself he feels even more guilty knowing how brutally she died.
Not to mention the guilt at what happened with his cousin, being blamed by their cold-ass grandparents when he was trying to help.

Yup. I watched this show as a kid with my family in the '90s, and that bit is probably the most specific line or detail I remember.
It’s truly touching to see how much everyone cares for Carter, especially Mark, Kerry, and Peter. They did everything they could to help him get better.

Andrew, absolutely have to agree with you. This scene brought tears to my eyes. Maybe one of the first times that I actually saw Benton as being a caring individual.
I agree especially when carter got stabbed and lost Lucy and got the worse of it when had a drug substance problem.
Another great one is when Benton transfers to another hospital “Hey Peter, I’m a good doctor because of you.” “No you’re not but keep trying.” Even as he walks out the door Benton still pushes Carter to work harder.

I always cry when Carter cries! When Carter cries, you know something is seriously wrong! Carter and Benton were my favorites, and Carter took Lucy's death so hard! But this great Dr. overcame it all! And he went through renal failure, and the death of his son Joshua! Rest in peace Joshua! Even though this show was a drama, it felt like the characters were so real! To me this show was the best show that ever aired, and there will never be a better show than ER!

The only person who could have possibly gotten through to Carter in that moment was Benton, and he did. This story arc really showcased the respect and care these two men have for each other. It's beautiful and humbling.
I remember watching this episode back in 2010 when I was 15, this storyline was one of my favourites and Carter was my favourite character. I remember thinking how well they portrayed addiction, despite being 15 with no experience or thorough understanding of addiction, this scene was extremely powerful and it stuck with me. I'm now 27, and 12 years after first watching this scene here I am again, re-watching it, except this time with my own personal experience with addiction to painkillers. I didn't think it was possible for this scene to be even more powerful but watching it now with a deeper understanding of just how Carter feels, god this is one of my favourite scenes of all time in any TV series or movie. It will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I watched this years ago. Never knowing the pain of addiction. Im 40 broke my back at 18 and have been an addict to codeine/ morphine for a while. The drs in the UK used to just throw medication at you. Never monitoring you. I love this clip because they all cared about them. Am struggling badly. I still work full time and everything but it is evil. I wish u all the best.x
I watched it as a teen when it originally aired. I had a lot of experience with addiction by that point, multiple adults in my immediate and extended family, and I also thought it was very well done. This is the first time I’m rewatching it but it’s stuck with me all this time. I think I’m gonna binge the series, I’ve never rewatched it.

I kind of feel bad for Carter, there's so much loss and pain in his life. His brother died at a very young age, his mother became very distant, his cousin had an overdose, he and Lucy get stabbed and she dies before he can apologize for his misjudgement, Mark Greene passes away, and then his son dies. I mean the guy can't even catch a break. But I will say he does try to have a bit of a positive attitude throughout most of the series, he I think grows the most throughout the show.
don't forget his guilt over Dennis Gant's suicide
Dennis Gants death is why I couldn’t understand why he treated Lucy so badly. He saw first hand what a mentor treating somebody so harshly could lead to. I know he had just had his heartbroken by Anna but that was no excuse.
@@piperjaycie Everybody's different and treats issues differently, Lucy had a lot more resiliency with how she treated her patients more so than Gant did. I also think by the time season 5 and 6 came around Carter started to come a little bit more confident with himself but that confidence started to go to borderline arrogance with his students and that guilt from his own arrogance is what led to him having this downfall at the end of season 6.

Teacher and apprentice became a blood brothers relationship. Once you respect someone that inner voice inside you always listens to what they have to say.
One of the things this story revealed was that Carter was never allowed to ask for help growing up. He was always the dependable one, and when he is the one who needed help, he couldn’t ask for it.

Carter could be an ambulance driver and this shit would need to get addressed pretty much the same way. Not to mention that outside of the people in the room genuinely caring for him, their heads would role if he ended up seriously hurting or killing a patient later on.

An addict with people around him who care about him and who have the medical knowledge of how to deal with it.
I didn't have that. In fact, my brother told me no when I asked him for help. His wife is a doctor.
I had to hit rock bottom on my own and decide it was time to get help on my own. It's the most effective way, granted.
But certainly the least pleasant, apart from dying due to overdosing.
I'm just grateful that my mother decided to emigrate to The Netherlands from Poland, before I was born, so that I could have decent healthcare and many opportunities.
Always liked to see how he acted around patients who had this background after he comes back to work. It was a nice touch

It took rewatching the show to realize that Benton and Carter were really the best characters to watch 2 phenomenal actors performing at a stellar rate. Benton really becomes more nurturing and kinder to Carter once he himself becomes a father. But always Carter was this little annoying brother to him, especially in the beginning, but eventually involves it evolves into a very deep brotherly love and bond The early season where Carter wants Benton to come to his family graduation,. Benton is too arrogant to even realize that Carter really wants him to come bcause he highly admires him as a friend. And then you see the evolution of their bond, when Carter gets stabbed in season. 6 Benton is going crazy to save him him running down the stairs still give me goosebumps, it's very adorable

This scene always brings me to tears. I love how Benton is the only one that can reach Carter, and especially as he was Carter's mentor over the years. It's quite fitting and both Actors were at the Supreme top of their game here. I miss when this show was on. I watched all of these episodes the nights they originally aired. You were NOBODY is you mjissed an episode and couldn't talk about it the next Friday morning.

I love weaver in this scene. Because you can see her affliction for him not following her rules. She who likes to be in control of everything. I also love that she stays in his way for him not tô leave. IF one thing she ever demonstrated was that she would not run away from a fight.

I remember this scene so vividly, back when it originally aired. Not a lot of shows will bring me to tears, but this scene did.
I found the intervention scene really painful to watch at the time. It's probably what Carter needed at that point, but so many people in the room facing him, forcing him to retreat in the corner where Sobriki had been waiting for him, I don't know... maybe they could have been a bit more "gentle" and thought it through a bit more? Without Benton being a true friend and running after him, that intervention could really have caused more harm than good.

The relationship between them is dynamic..(LaSalle and whyle). Such a great show and it still stands the test of time so many great actors and actresses got to show what they had in range and they ended up having amazing careers, goes to show when you have a perfect trifecta of actors, writers and producers you end up with long lasting tv gold. Love this show .
What stings even more than being in the same room as the patient that stabbed him and Lucy is that he’s going to Atlanta for 90 days, where Dennis Gant was from before moving to Chicago.
Yeah that story line was so sad. Poor Gant had no support and was in a super competitive and harsh environment with no one to back him up. Pressure like that must be horrendous. This is what I love about ER is the fact that they tackled so many uncomfortable topics, topics that are still having to be challenged now, let alone the 20 odd years ago.
I was a teenager in school 30 years ago (omg)but made sure I was in front of the TV every Thursday to watch ER for years! I want to binge watch as an adult seeing it with new eyes. No matter how many hospital shows made, ER is king!

The friendship that Benton and Carter formed throughout the seasons was amazing to watch. He understood what he needed to say to Carter in order to get him to rehab. He was scared when Carter was stabbed and almost died. Out of anyone in the hospital (besides Cleo) he truly ended up caring for Carter.
The way Benton said 'NO'...he wasn't going to give up on Carter like everyone else in his life has 😢💔👊👊👊

Benton and Carter had such a deep amount of respect for each other. i remember towards the end when Carter had the surgery and Benton was in the private sector and the moment they shared was so awesome. after all that time their relationship was still stronger than ever. great show, if you haven't seen it, stream it!
Night flight to Atlanta. I remember the "old days" (before airplanes became like crammed sardine cans). It was great to fly at night. The peace and quiet of that interval in time. Once I was on a flight with less than 20 passengers. So fantastic to have the whole row to myself and all the attention.
Having lost several classmates I went to school with because of addictions this is very still relevant storyline. it's amazing and it speaks to the power of the show and the writing and acting ability of the show that a show that started in 1994 ended in 2009 12 years later still has storylines that are relevant today. I don't know what that says about our society as a whole the fact that the storylines are still so relevant but the fact that they are speaks to the strength of the show and how it dealt with a real issues and actually accurately showed for the most part the human consequences of behavior.
Benton was always there for Carter. He's there when Carter wakes up after that surgery he needed.
This is the best episode ever. I constituted tough love from so many people, that is to save the one (Carter). This is ER’s best storyline ever…The world needs more loving tough love.
Noah Wyle is a tremendous actor. This storyline with him battling his demons should have been an award winning caliber performance for the actor.

The problem with Grey's Anatomy is that they tried tirelessly to recreate the Lucy Knight thing, which is fine if you're doing it once or twice but they do it with like almost every other character and a lot of the ways they kill off some of those people is just ridiculous.

This was perfectly written: Carter brings up what all addicts bring up when it wasn't to a point beyond lost hope yet: he brings up that nothing has suffered from his job and performance so he therefore doesn't have a drug "problem" which is what they were all accusing him of. Its almost like he was saying/challenging them and saying "I may have a drug "dependency" right now... but it hasn't been a "problem"..." They like to throw the exact words and what they "technically" mean back at thise helping them
I love this scene, so much! The emotions look so genuine, particularly between Carter and Benton by the van. These two had such a brilliant arc together!!
When Carter asked "Is he fired" if won't go to rehab and Dr. Green nodded Benton's reaction said it all. He knows Carter doesn't like being put in the corner and will fight to the end to get out from there
