I would be more hesitant of my words if I were a large news organisation like the WSJ. I would state clearly that China and Russia wish for BRICS to be antithetical to the G7 and NATO. May be true but the west has no resources, they get it from us, how many of these countries people are in the "west" because of our skills but lack of opportunity or unfavorable living conditions, we can now all go home and build our home lands with our resources and thrive on that. Possibly, but believe it or not, going from poor to middle income is the "easy" part. Going from middle income to highly developed like US or Europe is the hard part. There's a thing called "middle income trap" in economics where countries who developed thanks to cheap labor find their development because of their very success, their labor is now expensive, the factories move out and the country had failed to develop their own economic engines. Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Russia, Mexico are notable examples of this. Going beyond middle income sustainably (aka not a oil rich kingdom) has been achieved by Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan.

The case of Indian payments to Russia for oil imports in Yuan, is an exception and a temporary aka short term solution. BTW, India also used UAE's currency to pay Russians for oil imports. Russians have also accepted lots of Indian Rupees and have invested some of their earned Rupees in India.
BRICS + wants to develop an alternate finance system in addition to SWIFT so countries can select which system is better for themselves. Furthermore, I believe transaction fees will be much cheaper than SWIFT.

It was in the 90's that a currency analyst in Goldman Sachs coined the term BRICS for him to comment on these countries' currency, interest rate and general economic conditions as a group. At that time, it seemed to make sense because these countries were in similar economic development stage, and the cold war just finished. Fast forward to today, it's no longer applicable as the countries' are vastly different in industrial, agricultural, commercial capacity, and their geo political ambitions. To speculate that there is a chance for a common currency is just lunacy or intellectual challenging. They may share a common dislike of US, and US dollar, but asking them to give up part of their sovereignty, decision making capability in order to form a currency bloc, that won't happen nor does it make sense for each country.

actually its a very big misunderstanding that most people have about BRICS being a rival of the G7. These are two different economic blocks with entirely different socio economic goals. The biggest difference is the development goals - all brics countries are very populous and their challenges of demographics like use of resources, energy, human development requirements are entirely different from the G7 which largely have to preserve, reinvest and optimise existing wealth.

I will give my vision as a Brazilian and I imagine that India is the same. Indonesia is needed and invited to join BRICS as a representative for ASEAN countries, where the EV industry is developing very fast in Indonesia.
Possibly, but believe it or not, going from poor to middle income is the "easy" part. Going from middle income to highly developed like US or Europe is the hard part. There's a thing called "middle income trap" in economics where countries who developed thanks to cheap labor find their development because of their very success, their labor is now expensive, the factories move out and the country had failed to develop their own economic engines. Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Russia, Mexico are notable examples of this.
Going beyond middle income sustainably (aka not a oil rich kingdom) has been achieved by Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan.

Honestly, I don't think that any currency backed by gold could function for long - this would hinder accountingwise development.
Backed by a basket of goods' values (rare earths, gold, etc) would make more sense.

There isn't not enough gold for example available, at current prices, to cover the increasing demand for goods and services around the globe, the countries’ national debt, and all the paper and electronic currencies circulated in the world. You will just run into the same problem with other resources, then what?

actually its a very big misunderstanding that most people have about BRICS being a rival of the G7. These are two different economic blocks with entirely different socio economic goals. The biggest difference is the development goals - all brics countries are very populous and their challenges of demographics like use of resources, energy, human development requirements are entirely different from the G7 which largely have to preserve, reinvest and optimise existing wealth.
As long as china and India don't solve their border issues West don't need to be afraid of this group but if it did solve then.... You can say bye bye to western dominated world that we currently live in . Russia is a big player in this but India and china is what truly matters in this group
