Lol. Agreed. I got back into collecting my old lost big box pc games about 2 years ago and had to do quite a bit of work to find them all at reasonable prices. Hardest to find was the Wing Commander 3 film tin version but I got it and my collection is complete! Wish I had never gotten rid of my originals when I moved out at 18 though lol.
A big thanks to local Seattle collector Kevin Ng who let me borrow many of the extremely rare and valuable games in this video! It was a great mix of every publisher and genre and his games you almost never find out in the wild anymore. Such a cool dude!
I love seeing all the old PC games like this. I missed out since we didnt have a computer back then. I wish there was gameplay footage with these videos though.
Big box PC games are nothing short of art. My family couldn't afford a gaming pc in the 90s and I can't even count the hours I spent looking at the game boxes. Good memories.
This really takes me back to when I was kid. I'll have to see if I still have my sealed shareware and retail games that were passed down to me when I was younger. I know I have a copy of Doom Shareware sealed, Prince of Persia (standard box), Red Baron, and some other early DOS games a lot of which were from Sierra. I've even got a lot of the old shareware compilation CDs like a few editions of 101 Games that had Duke 1, Duke 2, Commander Keen, Crystal Caves, and Corridor 7. It would be cool for me to be able to help out a collector by adding things to their collection that they may not have yet. Seeing this video brought me back to when I was just two years old and my dad was teaching me DOS commands so I could play games on the PC after he went to work because he wouldn't be there to do everything for me. DOS taught me how to read before age three and now 23 years later I'm working as a senior cyber-security analyst. Geeked at birth and such good memories.
AHH takes me back! There was something so special about receiving a game in a big box with beautiful artwork and all disks and manuals inside. Or visiting a game shop looking at all the different boxes deciding which one to buy. Maybe it's nostalgia talking but it's an experience you miss with a simple download. Of course at the end of the day it's all about the games though not the packaging.
Thanks for this video. This brings back great memories. Stores who sold PC games in the 90's needed a lot of shelf space to display the large and often irregular shaped boxes. Very cool!
You do a great job with creating these videos on UA-cam. I really enjoy watching all the different games on PC or console that have been out there. Makes me want to go find and buy them. Dave

I've never paid more than 20$ for a PC game, and own more than 300 CIB. Just don't buy anything from ebay, it's just stupid to pay these prices. The biggest part of my collection come from thrift stores, garage sales or flea markets. But I also bought lots from website like Craigslist. My most recent acquisition come from one of these website and I bought 71 CIB PC games (mostly from the 90s) for 80$. You just have to know where to check and most importantly, be patient. Sometime, I can't find a single game for many months. And if someone is trying to sell you a game that you really really want for a stupid price, just tell him to go fuck himself. Because that's how the price rise for all of us. That Gabriel Knight box is indeed pretty sweet, wish I had that one in my collection. I think it was either 7th Guest or 11th Hour big box that had a very unique design to it. Cosmology of Kyoto also had a *really* cool box design
I was super lucky, an origami Gab Knight came up on ebay in Oz, not sealed but still was complete. Got it for $64AUD posted. One of my favorite games in my collection!
Heh, I got Wasteland for PC for 45 cents from a local thrift store a couple of years ago (missing the 3.5" disk but has both 5.25" disks and everything else). And the 3.5" version of LOOM with cassette for 65 cents. I actually ordered Jazz Jackrabbit 2 directly from Epic back in the day and they didn't send it in a box like that. I just got the game (in jewel case), manual, and comic.
I know I am not the only person to immediately see the Day of the Tentacle box, very nice. I don't know if you are aware but we Canadians got a Maniac Mansion TV show that was actually pretty funny.
I was born in 86. I didn't get my hands on a PC until about 1998. I remember going into stores though and looking at a lot of PC games and wanting to play them all. Box shapes would definitely catch my eye. I think my first true experiences until I got hooked with Counter-Strike and Team Fortress for HL1 was Outlaws, some of the Beavis and Butt-Head CD roms and I fondly remember Simpsons Virtual Springfield. Obviously StarCraft and Diablo 2 was a huge thing for me also. It all got crammed together by about 2000 when I hit high school. I have the Diablo 2 battlechest along with WOW. I have a small box copy of the HL1 pack that has Blueshift,Opposing Forces,Counter Strike and Team Fortress, so happy my brother found that. I didn't even play Maniac Mansion until after 2010 when my pal told me about the NES version. I now own a super nice version of it in the box, NES that is.

I remember the original Outrun that came out for ZX Spectrum having a music cassette with it with the original arcade music. The game also came on cassette which was a pain when you had to start it in the right place for the right level.
A great video, thanks! Ultima I is really hard to find complete and in good condition. Usually it’s more than $200. Fun fact, the Japanese Ultima I has a cloth map (I have it too). Also I’m lucky to have that small Ultima II grey box sealed, I wonder how much that is nowadays...
If it's for the IBM, the smaller grey box U2 will likely fetch north of $500 depending on condition. A sealed Apple II original release large box U2 went for over $1200 recently. The rarest one is the small black box.
Picked up some of these last year for the game room. Putting in a new addition and shelf to the Murray Game Museum just for PC Games as the boxes take up space.
Clothmaps, coins, vynil covers, weird shaped boxes. Man, they were packed. As a kid, in the 90s, I was pirating games because my family wouldn't spend that much money on games, since we had friends and such to pirate games for PS1 and PC. Now you are lucky to even see a manual on modern games, let alone a coloured one. You get a flimsy paper about safety, heallth Very few games can come with some extra bonuses, like the Inside/Limbo compilation on PS4 has art cards and a poster, Slime Rancher has a colourful manual that acts as a lite encyclopedia of slimes and each expansion of Witcher 3 came with two decks of Gwent to play with friend along with tokens and rules. If you want cool shit, buy the collector's editions.
Definitely. I’d like to see more videos like this, and I don’t even collect Big Box PC. I just appreciate looking back at the older stuff that laid the foundation for modern gaming. Also, I view your videos because I feel they bring awareness to our community. Others may see it differently. That’s their prerogative. I appreciate your videos and what I learn from them.
I’m a passionate pc collector and am very happy with this video. I’d love to see another video about the truly rare and expensive games. NWN wasn’t the first graphical MMO though.
I remember that Suspended one being on shelves at the local game store we had back in the 80s. Wanted it just for the box, but I am sure the game was probably just another text adventure game, and lord knows I had plenty of those already. Used to stay up until 3 am making very little progress on those text adventuires, and on school nights, and then be tired as heck! My best treasure I still have is a sealed PC version of Zork II, I ended up with two of them back in the day and I found the extra one a few years back still sealed and perfect, no idea what it is worth now, hard to look up sealed version, there are plenty of opened ones though.
I personally would love to see more of these BB PC games videos. I didn't play them much but it's still fascinating. PS. I find these "Stupidly Expensive" videos helpful. A. If I find one of these in the wild at a decent price even if I'm not familiar with it. I'll grab it because I saw it on here and know that it's likely worth a playthrough. B. I find things out about games in my collection. Or rather games that were once in my collection.....
I watched someone in Goodwill open the plastic wrap and seal off of a big box Duke Nukem 3D and Mortal Kombat 2. I couldn't tell him to stop in time... it was a sad day. At least I still picked them up in great condition for $2.99 a piece
True story: My senior year in high school (this would've been late December 1994, right before Christmas), I went over to my buddy's house in Danville, IL (his sister was a classmate of mine, and I'd had his father as a teacher back in middle school) just to, y'know, hang out and stuff, and lo and behold, Jane Jensen, creator of _Gabriel Knight_ (and her husband) were visiting the family from California. Turns out that they were close friends of my former teacher and his family, and I ended up staying for most of the night, talking PC games with Jane, and cleaning her out at poker to boot. Incredible memory of mine.

As usual, these videos on Old PC games are awesome!
Immediately when you showed jazz jackrabbit, I instantly thought of LGR.
Hello MetalJesus. Thanks great video! We have just picked up a tonne of Big Box PC games and it is handy to have something to refer to.
Love this video. I would never play a PC game but I love the boxes and artwork. Wouldn’t mind watching you play some of them either.
Wish I had the space to collect these! Definitely do more videos on this one, love the history.
I’m a passionate pc collector and am very happy with this video. I’d love to see another video about the truly rare and expensive games. NWN wasn’t the first graphical MMO though.
The only experience I have in the pc retro games is DooM. I’ve never heard of most of these!
Then you’re in for a huge surprise if you choose to play them. Old PC games are lit.
I appreciate you’re naming the prices in the video now
I personally would love to see more of these BB PC games videos.
Yes, do more of this. Though I don't collect big box pc exclusively, it is my favorite to collect for. Have a few of the ones mentioned here.
I’ve been watching these videos for two weeks and I didn’t know Metal Jesus’ name is Jason until today.
Would love to see more of these videos. I can’t afford to collect so it’s almost as good to see what others have managed to snag.
Love the extras included back in the day
Seeing Big Box game videos make me sad, I used to have a hundred or so big box PC games.
Day of the tentacle was great loved most of the Lucas art stuff back then, full throttle, Indian jones, Sam and max etc
