Having heard numerous collections of great opera choruses that didn't feature this, when I finally got to hear this, I couldn't understand why it wasn't on EVERY collection. It is stunning.

Utterly wonderful. Beethoven's humanity, always there in his work, at its most poignant.

Seems like a very appropriate song for a world cooped up inside and yearning for sunlight

One of the most indelible images in all the operatic repertoire is these men who have not seen the sun in months or years.

Did you read the lyrics in English or German? I cannot find an English translation of just this chorus. What part of it particularly "speaks to our time"? Thanks from México

Without knowing the lyrics, I sense it pertains to the ubiquitous dark presence that surrounds the planet, 24/7. Stanley Kubrick mentioned Fidelio in Eyes Wide Shut, his bold, nail in the coffin finale.@@steveegallo3384

@@tombader4921 -- Hmmmm....I sense some bias on your part toward baleful cheerlessness. Reminds me of Walkenritt ("Apolcalypse Now") and Barber's 'Adagio' ("Platoon.") Any remaining Dark Presence is amply shattered by 'Heil, dir Sonne'!

Yes, it speaks to the plight of political prisoners in every tyranny today, and the triumph of love and the human spirit. It isn't hard to think of political prisoners today - or martyrs - whose spouses have remained magnificently strong, though I can't think of any who have succeeded in liberating them in the way Leonora does, or by any other means. That was rather naive and fanciful of Beethoven, even then; and today's tyrants are even stronger and more impregnable against resistance. But Beethoven encourages us to remain hopeful that things can somehow be made to change.

@@malte996 oh, I didn't knew that, thank you! But the people in Austria speak german too, just with an (sometimes really heavy) accent. Even the official lyrics is written in german (you can look that up when typing "PrisonersChorus lyrics") So I thinks its basically the same!
