      With all the emphasis about elven hair since PJ’s trilogy, it’s been a few years I’ve entertained myself with the idea of the elves getting bald because of their lost connection with the Undying Lands, and a dark Lord promising them wondrous wigs, while "forging a Master Wig in the fires of Mount Doom". I was probably not the first on the idea but now, with the trailer of ROP online, it’s only become a new zeitgeist.

    It’s so easy to misjudge narrative manicheism as being simplistic and old-fashioned, though sometimes it is (most often than not in low-quality fantasy?). Unexperienced writers are prone to this mistake, thinking they’re bringing depth and subtlety while inserting morally flawed heroes and not-so-evil villains in a universe usually built on strong moral duality.
    Not that it shouldn’t be tried. Star Wars show Andor does it well, thanks to its good writing, and the showrunner has been smart enough to leave aside all narrative elements that could play as obstacles to his own take on the franchise (jedis...).
    All in all, I agree that nobody should never try to implement this kind of trendy trope into Tolkien’s universe. It ruins it to the core.

    I think one of the problems with "wokeness" in storytelling is that because writers are so conscious about "perpetuating harmful stereotypes" you can kinda guess what will happen based on the race, sex etc of characters. e.g. the Sith inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi will redeem herself because she's played by a black woman

    • @AdamWeisshaupt
      @AdamWeisshaupt Місяць тому

      The people that are woke are usually first world citizen that are not suffering any kind of hardship. If you are a straight white male in Ukraine you are privileged an oppressing a spoiled person in the US. That is how I see it as a non-American. And you are also never included in the stories. They only represent American. Wokeness replace one culture white American with the same culture black American.

    • @AdamWeisshaupt
      @AdamWeisshaupt Місяць тому

      Putin is a good example of wokeness . He think America is oppressing Russia and its all Americas fault. But people only believe in the part of wokeness that benefits them. That they oppress the whole world, according to their own teaching, is not welcome. The reason is they want to be oppressed. The reality is they are the most privileged people and therefore they are oppressing the rest of the world.

      @@amys0482 I think you're entirely *technically* correct with your position on this. Weak writing is weak writing, and a story can have (even quite strong) woke elements and be excellent.
      However, it's impossible to ignore that in the current entertainment environment we can predict whether a story will be weak with nearly 100% accuracy based solely on how woke it appears from promotiinal material. Many of those so-called facists (I don't know who you're thinking of but that term gets used just as freely as woke does) may not be the most articulate, or pass as intellectual giants to you, but they've usually identified something real.

    • @amys0482
      @amys0482  Місяць тому +1

      @@Golmov_the_Wretched The begrudging way you acknowledge that a story "can" have woke elements and be excellent is the problem--not a problem with you, but with the success of the rhetoric or as evidence of discriminatory bias.
      I would argue strong themes nearly always make stories better, especially progressive themes.
      What the critics point out is that "performative" or tokenist writing can be cringey and lower the quality of the work. But I think calling this "woke" is disingenuous.
      It's not the message that is bad. It is how it is woven or shoved into the story.

    The whole production has been, to steal from Douglas Adams, almost, but not quite, entirely unlike Tolkien's writings. The only reason to watch it is curiosity, but it is the sort of curiosity that makes train-wrecks fascinating. Even setting aside the extremely poor portrayal of Tolkien's 'feigned history'' (as he called it), the storytelling itself was egregious. Númenor makes no sense; _mithril_ makes no sense; time and distances make no sense; the whole 'key' plot for Mount Doom makes no sense; the Harfoot society makes no sense. One could go on. I will let Mark Twain (writing about James Fenimore Cooper's literary offenses) say it for me:
    "A work of art? It has no invention; it has no order, system, sequence, or result; it has no lifelikeness, no thrill, no stir, no seeming of reality; its characters are confusedly drawn, and by their acts and words they prove that they are not the sort of people the author claims that they are; its humor is pathetic; its pathos is funny; its conversations are-oh! indescribable; its love-scenes odious; its English a crime against the language.
    "Counting these out, what is left is Art. I think we must all admit that."

    thanks: Forgot the show too. But happy to watch it through channels like yours.
    Other than you - I pretty much think Elrond was just like Galadriel. The show trys to confince you that the character is the opposite of what he really is.
    Galadriel just got the "stoic elvelike" face and Elrond got the "sundayschoolteacher smirk elvenlike" face direction from the showrunners. Elrond literally only shows up because he needs something from the dwarfs, lies to his friend (by losing the rock-smashing), spys on his "friend", breaks into his secret mine, breaks his oath and tells everyone about mithril (he couldn´t make the offer of wood and stuff without the permission of the king and talks with the smithelve openly about mithril and let him study it) and in the next scene he says "but you can trust me because I am only an half elve". He could have slept with Disa and Durin and himself would still say he is the best guy/friend in the world. I think he is worse than Galadriel - because I don´t care for anyone who interacts with Galadriel - but Durin and Disa would be such a good couple to follow if it wasn´t for oathbreaker Elrond.
    Sorry - It seems season 2 will open some old wounds. ;-)
    The most shocking was - I read that Halbrand is called that, because its German for Halb (Half-) Rand (Frame) and its glasses that only has a frame on the bottom of the glasses - because he is an eye! I speak german and think its the most hilarious trivia I ever read about a show.

    The whole thing is about the choice between submitting to the will of Eru, as you deem it, or following your own desire and ignoring the rest of His creation. Melkor wants to possess Arda. Feanor makes the Silmarils to capture the beauty of Arda, then sends his family to hell in an oath to retrieve them. Galadriel finds peace when she is able to forsake the ring, like a lesser Silmaril, and abandon her quest for power. The dwarves follow the will of Aule, not Eru and are perhaps doomed. Men war because they are deceived into fearing death, rejoining Eru. The hobbits are at peace because they follow the word of Eru as it appears in their own hearts, to seek harmony.
    Amazon just decided not to include that part lol.

She's already done that to Numenor by brining Sauron to their Island and help drive a wedge between the factions. So basically this Galadriel is Sauron's helper because she's just that dimwitted? All that, and about a foot in height over RoP Galadriel, who is a single-minded hothead with the emotions of a teenager even though she's the oldest main character (*) in RoP. They've got a lot of ground to cover to tone her down, wise her up, ramp her magic skills, and manifest her ethereal grace and telepathy talents. I've whined before and I'll whine again: the original LotR trilogy showed that you can take a well-loved property, follow it quite closely, and still have a winning and beloved set of movies. Same with GoT for the first five seasons. I know showrunners want to make their bones but could they please do it with their own properties, not the revered ones with the built-in audiences? We don't mind little surprises but don't make foundational changes to narratives which have stood considerable authorial attention and reader challenges.

    People on the left keep confusing diversity with woke. Diversity is fine because it's organic - I give you shows like OZARK and HALSTON and THE DIPLOMAT. There are plenty of diverse characters in them, but those characters are never handled with kid gloves - those characters are never given a pass, and never clumsily and predictably elevated over heterosexual white men, simply by virtue of certain immutable features. This is called art. Whereas woke, which commits all of the above-mentioned crimes and more, isn't art. It's propaganda, and propaganda is the death of art.

      I work in the DEI space. I think you misunderstand it. DEI is not a zero sum game where unqualified people with immutable features are elevated above hetero white men. It is about shifting systems of prejudice that formally ONLY gave opportunity to hetero white men to allow equal access to marginalized groups.

      @@amys0482 Crimes against art, yes - and as a worker in the DEI space, which I think largely a racket, you devise the divisive and counterproductive "struggle sessions" to which I referred in another comment? 🙂 I hardly need remark that when - like Amazon, creator of THE RINGS OF POWER - you create formal policy and checklists which demand the hiring and promotion of certain groups over other ones, based solely on things like race and sex, you've already built your house on sand, and are merely practicing racism and sexism in their modern manifestations.
