    I can't thank you enough.. 35 years of trying to get those damn lids off, your method worked. I am passing it forward .... I taught my granddaughter how to do it.

    Thank you , Jane! I thought I had to wait until my husband came to home to open this darn 5 gallon bucket of paint, but after watching this video I had the bucket open in 5 minutes!!! Every time I take on a project my husband says, "Do you know how?" and chuckles. I just roll my eyes. I can't wait to see his face when he comes home the painting is finished! OMG, thank you! It is January 30, 2022, 12:05 am and I have been fighting with trying to get this lid off this bucket for hours. Doing this trick had it off in minutes. I wish I would have found you first.

    Hello Ivan, I have never had an issue with the lid not creating a good seal once re-applied. As a best practice (if it is joint compound) I top it with a small amount of water to keep the surface moist before re-applying the lid. Thanks for your comment.

      Joint compound comes with a clear plastic topper.
      Keep replacing this to keep it fresh

    Perfect. And glad to hear you don’t have issues with the mud drying out by adding a spritz of water before closing.
    After finally getting it open a second time to actually use it- and struggling to mix it (had to hand mix a little at a time it to thin for skim coat since the drill was borrowed and wasn’t doing the job) I then had to put the lid back on. All tired from having my hand above my head skimming I couldn’t even get my weight to seal it again. It was so annoying. I bet with these cuts I’ll be able to close it in a snap too! Thanks.

    Thanks for the tip but I just went from the hole down and got it open with just a bit of effort. I'm pretty sure it won't re-seal properly if you do it this way. It's just if you are planning to discard the bucket, right? You don't want paint all over the back of your vehicle! Anyway good tip - helped me choose the right tool to cut the lid. Thanks!
    Also, just fyi - search for "5-Gallon Paint Can Opener". No need to even cut the lid at all, but costs a few $.

    Cut the tabs bottom down as they are designed to be cut to avoid your product drying out from exposure to air where you cut above the bucket lip, also buy a bucket lid wrench and use it.

    Not sure if you knew this.. but those holes; if you put a screwdriver into them, you can use them to pry the lids off. No hammering, no other tools needed. All you need is a screwdriver, it's simple, and effective. Before you ruin your lids, try a screwdriver. Why do you think the holes are there?

    Hi, question for you. I'm using similar buckets for my cheerleaders. We call them cheer buckets. The girl's can use them for storing drink's and snack's in them at games. They also use them as seats between cheers. How the heck can I make these easier for the girl's to remove and replace? They are hard even for me.. HELP!!! Thank you.

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  8 років тому

      +Jacqueline Ramirez You know, Jacqueline, the only way that I know of is the way I showed in the video. However, I have seen newer 5 gallon buckets where there is a band that you remove and pull off...kind of like a giant version of a juice bottle. Once the band is off, it is easier to remove and replace the cover. But that is all I can think of...

    Wow, I just spent 2 hours literally taking my jigsaw and cutting the tops in half to get them off my what I thought was a great deal on 10 free buckets. My friend works for a beverage company and gave me 10 buckets. I spent hours trying to get those damn things off I just took a jigsaw to them! They did not have the little slits on them and I do not have that tool they make for them because I lent it to my nephew and of course he does not know what he did with it! I will never accept free ones again I'm so frustrated from now on I will only buy them from home depot wow!
