As a one who has a 89' Jeep Cherokee with 286K miles, this video was near and dear to my heart.
Me too with my 92' Cherokee 4.0, super easy to work on.
As a Cherokee owner, I approve of the humor in this video.
I agree, you have to live with one of these trucks to understand the whole "its a Jeep thing". My 01 XJ 60th Anniversary model 2.5TD has the same doors don't stay open option, and currently the tailgate won't open either!
This jeep is nicer than my daily. 👍🏻

A jeep thing once more flummoxes me?
Surely, Jeeo things I don't understand, Ray does, as he stated quite early..
That Dana 26/28 front axle aint gonna love that 35-38" tire
Snap-on guy: " you can't do that to your screwdrivers. They're screwdrivers, they're for screws"
Ray: slowly nods while blinking and walking backwards ... then proceeds to do everything your not supposed to do with a screwdriver that we all do honestly...
As a prior XJ owner...I bet the reason the hood is spaced out at the rear is to get more air flow out of the engine bay....if your trail crawling they like to get real warm. One trail run I was on my temp gauge was getting high enough that we actually removed the hood and threw it into the back of the Jeep to keep it cool during low speed crawling.
Why bother to upgrade the cooling system to fix that issue when you can bolt some white trash spacers on amiright ?
I look at that front suspension set up and just think.....I'm glad neither me or my family are traveling in it 😅
Or anywhere near it
@@curtisj2165 Yup. That thig is a _POS.
The front springs are bowed out middle way down the spring.
Why would they travel in it? Do you and they need a ride somewhere?
@@handbananaistherapist642 It's a Jeep thing. The rest of us think it's nuts. (So do some of the Jeep folks, but it's the kind of nuts that they like.)
It looks like one good bump and those front springs will depart the vehicle!

"We can see the ditch were going to fall into" Wow I need that, way toooooo funny!! Thanks Ray.
It"s the end of the world playing in the background seemed sort of appropriate while Ray was trying to pull the bonnet up on this post apocalyptic modded old Jeep.
People want to believe that lifting the rear edge of the hood allows air to flow out from under it for cooling. Actually, the area between the rear of the hood and the bottom edge of the windshield is in a HIGH pressure area. Air will more quickly flow in UNDER the hood than out . Note that the air intakes for cabin air intake (heat, defrost, a/c) are placed at the place where air flowing over the hood meets the windshield; that placement maximizes the airflow into the cabin.
At swamp-crawl speeds. there's no pressure at the base of the windshield. At highway speeds, the cowl induction helps put enough airflow down the firewall to keep the interior a little less swelter-ish in Florida's 10-month Summer.
That booster reach-around install was epic! Included filming!!!! Funny video!
😂😂😂😅😅
If you didn't fix that brake booster, the jeep would have had air brakes. (At least that's what it sounded like.) Oh, and Ray, you are having WAY too much fun lately and it's GREAT to see how much happier you are, doing your own thing.
Hits different when ur the boss

@@Rekuzan Exactly, we can make fun of cars. Some of them need to be made fun of.
Congrats on 500k Ray!!! Its been a real ride!
I'm over here pointing at the passenger fender well, saying "Ray, use the prop rod... right there!"
I was screaming at him as well
same thing I'm here yelling at my pc screen ( It's right there on the passenger fender Ray)
It probably doesn't work😂
Me too
Ray probably wanted the hood wide open to access the brake booster and the stock prop rod doesn't raise the hood enough.
Ray is a master at the ol 'reach around' lately 😁He’s been giving a lot of customers that special treatment
As a Jeep owner, that is called a brake booster stud friction holder in place bracket, available only on select Cherokee models ! 🙂
On thing I can say is that this is still mostly an American Motors Jeep, seeing as they designed this version, as opposed to later Chrysler and/or Fiat Jeeps, so there's that.
I used to run track use only shift levers with lockout reverse (on both manual and automatic transmissions) and a 3500 RPM stall torque converter on automatic transmissions. Pedestrians thought I had the car in neutral and was revving the engine and would cross the road in front of me while the RPM was ramping up to where the transmission would engage. Applying the brake in an effort to prevent the car from lurching forward toward the pedestrians didn't work because the front tires would leave the ground and I ran without rear brakes so I could do burnouts and get the tires ready for drag racing. In hindsight, I was really fortunate that I never hit anyone or anything.
BTW, the track use only shifters prevented my cars from being stolen several times because the thieves couldn't figure out how to operate the trigger and lockout reverse mechanisms. Having a switch for the electric fuel pump that was hidden under the carpet added to the theft deterrence.
There was a guy who had a 914 that was stolen several times, but always recovered nearby when the thief gave up trying to drive it. Various things about it required The Knowledge, like how to get the shifter to work at all.
Not only can you see the ditch you’re about to crash into, that custom induction hood will ensure terminal velocity so that when the wheels finally return to ground both of the springs will deploy their ejection from the vehicle feature.
Awesome!
I'd pay good money to watch that.
The owner opted for the decapitation feature
I had an 83 ramcharger 4x4 with 114 hockey pucks between the frame and the body for the lift and added 4 more hockey pucks the the steering shaft with two treaded rods to stretch it , I drove that truck for 5 years like I stole it 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
Getting that hood open turned this into an unboxing video.
Yeah, He probably paid a machine shop two hundred dollars to make those hood hinge spacers. and then found out the damn hood release doesn't work now. lol
@Tim Glass I wonder how much he paid for those padlock fixtures on the corners? Like there's anything under that hood that anybody'd want to steal? Not when it takes a crane to get the hood open.
Or a pound of C-4.
The thing I love about your videos even more that the content (which I love, having been a mechanic back in the day, the 70s and 80s) is your sense of humor. I always have a smile every time I watch one of your videos.
Happy to see your having fun while improving the vehicles your working on. Seeing your videos makes for a great start to the day ahead.
I'm a simple man. Rainman Ray puts up a video about an XJ, I click.
I've owned my '99 XJ 4X4 for about a year, and put about 20K on it (just hit 168k a few days ago). It's never been off-road aside from dirt driveways. (Yet!) The 4.0 is comfortably seated near the top of the list of my "Ten Favorite Engines." I've personally seen 4.0s with 300-400k on them, in both Cherokees and Grand Cherokees. Damn solid engine!
My buddy has an '88 XJ that he's in the process of a full teardown and rebuild, it was his first car, and a hand-me-down from his grandfather (the original owner). The other night he asked me when I was gonna sell him MY Jeep, I told him we couldn't even begin that discussion until he put his back on the road and we went 'wheeling together.
No, mine is not for sale, yet I keep getting random strangers asking to buy it. I dunno why, it's bone-stock except for a beefier luggage rack and OEM rims from a Wrangler... And the Grand Cherokee front leather seats... And super-clean undercarriage... And DOESN'T leak oil... 🤣 I have no grand plans for my XJ, I'm keeping the original ride height, maybe add a brush guard with some lights. And, of course, a mild subwoofer.
These Jeeps are enjoyable to drive. Reasonably-good road manners (except on windy days), fairly competent in mild-off-road situations (in stock configuration), and there are photos and videos all over the internet of XJs not only getting into some serious off-road fun, but also getting the overconfident fellas unstuck.
3:30 - Yup, definitely a leaking booster. My first car, '83 Oldsmobile Omega, blew the booster three days after I had the master cylinder replaced. 😠I literally stopped the car - from highway speeds, or in stop-and-go traffic - by using BOTH feet while pulling UP on the steering wheel and praying the engine wouldn't stall from the vacuum leak. I'd rather drive a car without power brake assist, than with malfunctioning power brake assist!
8:15 - Hello, Hood Prop...👋 Sorry Ray didn't see you there!
That actually was a not-so-bad job. Everything seemed to go well from beginning to end. I was surprised to see nice new brake lines installed, and I'm sure you were relieved that they weren't going to snap as you flexed them!
A few years ago, I had to change the air diverter motor in my '99 Camry's A/C, I discovered it's MUCH easier to remove whatever seat is in my way if I have to spend a prolonged period of time sprawled out under the dash. I'm cursed with both a bad back AND bad knees (trust me when I say, proper knee protection is IMPORTANT to any mechanic, detailer, or stereo installer!) and the pain from yanking a front seat out is preferable to the pain of prolonged bending and/or positions more suited to the Kama Sutra!

Love the shift in the channel to cover High Performance content. "It's a Jeep thing"
I had a 94 5.0 stang, it was very "custom" . It was a death trap held together with zip ties, clamps and tape. It had a brake booster leak and many other issues that I drove around with for years. I was the only person that could drive the car because it was so custom, only I knew the secret operational order.
Looks like a wreck in action even when sitting still.
What a P.O.S.
Still baffles me to this day decades later after taking Electrical Systems and Brakes as an Autotech class that the brake booster works so well, and the engine can produce enough vacuum to make that happen.
I mean for a 80 year old women can press the brakes and stop a 7k pound vehicle.
The hood being lifted at the back is to aid cooling which sucks in XJs. Mine has louvers like many others do and it helps.
I've had 3 of those jeeps with piles of miles and loved every one of them.
One of your funniest videos to date 😂 Not laughing at you but laughing with you. Keep up the great work Ray.....

I have to disagree with one thing you said Ray... That Jeep will never be finished. It's become a life-long hobby! 😎

You call that a life?
Don’t know why they quit making that engine, in my opinion one of the best Jeep ever had! I was trying my best to hold those wires out of your way, just couldn’t get them!
The EPA is why they stopped making it
My working theory is just like when Mopar stopped making the "slant-six:" it was TOO reliable, which meant fewer sales.
Those front spring look like they are about to escape
I was thinking the same thing. A good bump and twang, spring gone.

My first vehicle was a 96 XJ 2 door 5 speed. I miss that beast every day. I sold it with 285,000 miles and she still ran mint. That straight 6 was an incredible engine.
You don't see the prop rod right there on the right side fender?
Raising the rear of the hood will not let air out from underneath the hood it actually has a high-pressure area up against the front the windshield at forces air into the back of the hood which is why it's cheap cowl induction.

Best jeep ever. 4.0 will last forever.
Today on "Just Rolled In".
That jeep cherokee must have been the absolute last ones before they retooled the line for the 96-01 update. That i6 is the best engine and easiest to work on when it finally gets into its prime after 200k miles. Mine all died around 350-375.. piston skirt breaks and rear main seals helping to burn up the transmission.. was the worst. But they still want to crawl down the road knocking and barely going into gear. I drove one with a bearing knock and piston slap for over 20k miles, before it finally died. But I knew how to baby it along. I miss those jeeps.. don't settle for a wj or any diamler chrysler cut rate jobs..
That Optima battery just doubled the blue book value on that Jeep😅
In my state 0lder Jeep Cherokee's are ramped up like the one your working on. The mountain roads will have a convey of 4 to 5 jeeps heading up to hunting camps or whatever they do in the Idaho Mountains.
Love the cj, xj an the old AMC wagoneers. My sister currently drives a J20 4x4 with an amc 360 in it. She bought it not knowing I built the engine for it in 2007. She said it does better than the 2012 Silverado in the northern Iowa winters.
That solution to get the booster studs in was proper next level professionalism! As soon as I saw the brake lever bracket didn't line up with the holes I knew this job was going to be a B*st**d with just 1 person, you proved me wrong and made light work of it! Nice one Ray!
I did think of the ratchet strapped prybar solution but I always find ideas like that work better in your head then they do in reality as I can imagine every time you put pressure on the prybar with the ratchet strap it would slip off as soon as you let go of it
When you said, "unless?... Watch this" I was convinced you was about to shout "wife unit?!" 😅

Ah, weight reduction package stage 2, you mean?
I had a 2000 Cherokee with the straight 6. I loved that thing. My muffler rusted off, so I ran a pipe from the cat out the side right in front of the right rear tire. It sounded amazing at 3k rpm.
That’s actually a pretty swear rig someone is working on. You can clearly tell it’s not a daily and it’s a project to someone. Not everyone can afford to do everything at once and it seems they’re well on their way to making it something awesome to them. I think they are doing a great job.
Roughcountry lift with an IRO 3 link is what it looks like. Not bad.
agree, it's not all that bad. solid base to build off and fix up.
Ray, loved the vid - reminded me of my failed booster experience. i bought a new Australian-built fuel injected V8 wagon 30 yrs ago to tow a caravan as my aging Subaru had insufficient power & weight. when i test drove, i noticed the brakes were very insensitive. the salesman’s comment was “they’re new linings & will get stronger as they bed in”. i believed him in my naivety. The first trip away with the van in tow was absolutely terrifying & unpleasant. i had to brace myself against the seat to get the combo to slow down. it was really dangerous to drive & i had to anticipate every slow down & keep an extra distance. several trips back to dealer later and they finally admitted the vacuum brake booster was inoperative and was replaced under warranty. while the brakes now “worked”, they weren’t as sensitive as i was accustomed to & i never really liked the poor brakes & understeer in wet conditions. still i had lots of fun sleeping in the rear over several yrs til i finally got rid of the thing for a used carburettored Mitsubishi Colt which required constant fiddling to cold start & later a new 2006 Corolla which i still have. i love it’s reliability & pleasant drive.
I’d swap the direct steering & sensitive braking of the hatches for that wagon any day. but the experience put me off the dealer & manufacturer of that wagon.
I can understand wanting an XJ project. Especially since I already have a TJ that I love more than...er...the dog. I have found myself looking at 90's and early 2000's XJ's myself. But that one there, that's a bit more "projecty" than I would ever want. Would need a ton of time and money, and in the end, it would still be, well, needing more and more... By the way, thanks for the link to the Folding LED lights. Those look pretty nice, but so far I have had good luck with the Horror Freight Braun brand that go on sale quite regularly.
In mid-99 there was a design change to the 4.0L cylinder head, those heads tend to develop cracks. I can't remember what month in '99 the change occurred, it's something you might want to be wary of.
My Jeep about to hit 100k! It’s got projects here and there but the engine is tip top! Many more smiles per gallon to come.

Cool, you and Eric O both came out with brake videos this morning.
I test drove an XJ one day because it's brakes had a bunch of issues.
I have to say, I really liked the little truck for seating, sight, height, creature comfort in placement of controls.
It needed it's caliper mounts welded up because the pads were eating into them.
It needed rear brake and differential repair for lube soaked brake shoes.

I had an early four door jeep similar. If I kept it, it would have over 300k miles too.

Those straight sixes were great as long as you kept the oil leaks to a minimum and kept them cool off-road. I’ve seen many with 300-500k. The rest of the Jeep usually rotted away well before the engine would ever die. They weren’t speed demons or fuel sippers, but they were very torquey and reliable.
That Jeep looks like a lot of fun Ray. Great work. Cheers.
That thing sure makes the case for the ol' BFH.

Boy does this bring back memories of my 91 XJ. 😂😊
I'm old enough to remember a time before 13mm existed. Those are 1/2 inch bolts my friend
Seeing you under the dash of cars reminds me that my ribs and side still hurt from the door jamb jamming me when I worked on cars. I am going to be putting driving lights on my pickup and am dreading getting under the dash to run the wiring. Great job Ray. Keep it up.
You're having to much High-Performance fun with that Jeep Ray, lol. 😂
Love the content today.

@8:25 had the same thing happen before on on a few vehicles. My solution was to use silicone tape to secure the plug to the socket. Worked like a charm, added another layer of splash resistance, doesn't have the potential to cut / strain the wire like a zip tie might.
you were having way too much high performance fun on this one
The opening tells me it’s gonna be one hell of a show.
"WHO DOES THIS?!?!???" Said the man LIVING in Florida...
Having so much fun trash talking, the hood prop was completely overlooked.🤣🤣
