Nice addition! I would suggest you send that old cluster back to the guy, so he can take advantage of reusing it, instead of leaving in forgot in a box.
Check engine light with glow plug codes is common when changing out a cluster. it stems from extended key on engine off time then starting the engine. Basically the glow plugs had run through their start timer before the engine was started. Don't feel bad about missing the bolts at first you were distracted by the check engine light
I remembered the screws, but was not sure if you did not film it to confuse us viewers! great new cluster, especially with the blue lumens ! nice video, have your self a wonderful day!
Every GM cluster I've ever pulled had that same issue with the connector being stubborn as dirt. Also love how it's always up at the top, but also feeds through the top of the dash, so you can't actually tip the cluster forward and see what you're doing. I live way out in mountain-country. Red dome lights are
That was very nice of Eric to do that for you, as well as the attention to detail re getting the mileage on the replacement cluster close to the actual mileage of the original cluster.
Ahh the classic GMT 800 cluster. I made a career of remanufacturing these at work, before I retired. The biggest problem they had was bad solder joints and mold on the circuit board. Also, you could get one of several custom appearance appliques for those.
This is so true. I was having a really bad day many years ago, a classic car dealer and shop had a new project parked in back, a 1959 Buick. I had grown up with one and I love them, so I had to stop to check the car out, doing that made my day a whole lot better!
"More like a sponge these days" True words right there! At my shop we have a 2016 Buick with a 2.0 turbo engine, less than 100k miles with a broken piston. Driven by seasoned folks, so not romped on and maintained properly. IIRC there is a TSB on this.
Lucky Man, what a thoughtful gift to send you Ray, simple plug and play system and looks great mate so have fun with the new toy and it shows what great subscribers you have following you Ray and we all wish you well. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖
I've been a sub here for years. Love the content, the humor, etc. Today my gauges went out in my 04 gmc yukon. Magically this video pops up and in 30 seconds i know how to fix it. Thank you magical psychic mechanic man.
Accurate observation about the chimes. There are so many "Warning" signals at the work kitchen that it's all just totally normal. Except for this one timer that sounds exactly like a fire alarm. Works every time. Cheers mate
I agree. There is a problem when too many alarms sound. (I am ex merchant marine capt. retired) I was walking back across the yard, when my vessel was in drydock and nearly got run over by a moving dockyard crane. It was sounding the obligatory 'dee dah' alarm. I thought 'why didn't I hear that?'. The answer was: all the time we were alongside the dock, that is all you could hear. Constant alarms going off all the time. My brain had simply tuned it out. Made it more dangerous.
Nice. The tach reline is more appropriate.... from 4800 to 3250. On another note, I think a 1/4 magnetic bit driver screw driver works on those screws.
You can probably take the back off of the cluster and swap the module that contains the lcd and retain your original mileage. It worked with my 1996 full size chevy conversion van.
You need some of that blue juice for the windshield, 😆😆😆😆 Looks good, Ray! I just replaced the front brakes today on my Dad's 2015 Buick Encore ( original brakes + living in the rust belt + torx screw holding the rotors on = ☹☹☹☹☹☹) When I used some brake clean to clean everything off, I swear I heard the sound effect that you and Eric O use, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, brake surgery was a success😁 Have a great weekend, Ray🤘
I would've thought the vehicle's mileage was stored in one of the onboard computers and the gauge cluster was just a display. I learned something new today. 🙂
@@basilbailey47 That's where the OBD2 can read it, sure. But it doesn't match the dash cluster reading. The dash has it's own memory for the mileage, no? Otherwise it wouldn't have the discrepancy.
That is a good looking cluster, it's just missing the kilometers. How are you supposed to drive up and visit everyone in Canada. Sounds like some place in southern Florida had quite a bit of rain. We saw pictures on the news of all the flooding there, I hope you guys are all right.
Shout out to Automotive Circuit Solutions. They can restore your gauge clusters among other electrical-type module repairs. They refreshed my 2003 Tahoe cluster and added a tranny temp gauge. Great company, fast turn around, reasonable cost. Check them out. And congrats Ray on your new toy. I’m making my “new” ....just bought it...2005 Tahoe perfect. Ray, thanks for sharing and teaching. Dave in Omaha.
Niiice! I put blue LEDs on my cluster background, too. Didn't like the old MG 1980s "orange" look. Such a bad choice they had with that. Oh, I have an MG TF. Still trying to figure out what the TF stands for. Totally F*****? I don't know. All I know is, stuff keeps breaking on it and I keep having to fix them.
I remember having to repair my digital odometer on my 95 Blazer. Finding parts are impossible to find. Now let take a look at the new full digital guage clusters, that are simple and easier to produce with less parts, will just as difficult to replace and repair. Manufacturers only produce so many repair parts before they allow the after market to build their products.
And to think, my new vehicle set up process includes 1) disabling all chimes in programming, 2) and if that doesn't work, pulling the chimes out. I had a microwave oven once, it knew I pulled the dang beeper off it, so it would not turn on, so I soldered it back in, and drilled the piezo disk to kill it, the microwave was silently happy ever after.
Yeah, easy install, big bang for the buck and effort on these trucks, especially when the stepper motors go south. Been there, done that, with all my GM trucks. Good job, man. I love watching you work because you are a very smart man. I learn from your work-flow every video. Thanks for sharing.
That was child's play. I replaced all my gauge faces with white versus black Indiglo gauge faces. Now that was micro surgery. While I was in there, I also swapped out the stock bulbs with LEDs. Much easier on the eyes both night and day. That was in my strap on '99 Miata. You don't get in the car, you put it on.
I need one in my 06 Suburban K2500. I love my rig. Just did new taillights last week. I've been avoiding replacing valve seals. Not sure if that's a common issue on the Vortec 8100, but mine are junk.
I’ve worked with many guys who leave the drivers door open, key in ignition, then they walk away while I’m concentrating on my own task, then there’s an endless chime
Whatever you said about Govt and Chevrolet is been recorded now forever. For those who care we can dredge that statement up and point our arthritic fingers in years to come and say, see he was right!😂
Nice. I replaced mine with a rebuilt one with LEDs and also the HVAC auto that no lights worked and kept turning on my heat in the summer. Anyway, when I had the ignition on with the battery still connected mine set a long list of codes, too. Might be the cause. Who knows. Love your dash. Someone was really nice because mine cost me about $175. Take care. btw...mine only has 3 screws in it. One is in the knee part and I ain't removing that just to get a screw when 3 works. Even 2 work well enough...lol.
New dash looks great bud, I tried to modify the dash in my first car and ended up breaking the fuel and temp gauges which made driving 10x more excitiing 😂 definitely not a recommended "mod", regularly had to get friends to bring me fuel and people always commented about my car overheating, I just went along with it like "yea she runs a little hot sometimes" lol
Did it come preloaded with the miles on it or did the computer do it? I only ask as I had a hilux that needed a new cluster and both the new and old one had to be sent away to be calibrated to match each other. I should add I'm in Australia
hi ray finely caught up with the past two months of your videos. comment numero 1 glad to see that the shop is doing well. numero due i noticed that you are doing a lot of heavy duty repairs than what you used to do when you worked with a company and numero tre at least with the land rover range rover you did not have to dismantle half the engine to change the spark plugs !! well done for now and for the future of your business

Nope I was yelling as well
Yep, yelling all the way from here in the UK!!
Like crazy!
Yeah, fox as well.

I was sitting here going, "Ray, did you put the screws in when we weren't looking?" Fortunately you caught it.

Love the new cluster. Love the chime also. But I ignore the dogs barking and it drives the wife crazy. Selective hearing I guess. 😂
Just upgraded my guage cluster not long ago. I got the check engine light delete package. Saved me tons of money!
Love the upgrades... makes the Dirty Max feel like it's a new truck! 😄
Didn't know that yelling at my computer screen would be heard, but I was yelling "you forgot to screw it in'" and you heard me. Happy to help!
Yes Ray the chimes can become unheard but they never have for me, and they drive Eric-O crazy as well.

I just love the distinct sound of mid-2000's GM plastic. :-) As a C5 Corvette owner, I hear it every day.
I used to jam a tennis ball into the door jam over the switch to make the chime stop while working on my dash of my old Buick.
Accurate observation about the chimes. There are so many "Warning" signals at the work kitchen that it's all just totally normal. Except for this one timer that sounds exactly like a fire alarm. Works every time. Cheers mate

Your new cluster goes well with the Banks gauges! Cool!
