Gotta give major props to Rachel Zegler; instead of lypsincing to the already recorded versions of the songs, she chose to sing live on set for every take, to better set the atmosphere for herself and others. She's just incredible.

I just learned this too! She didn't do live takes of the song in the arena, the director said that if she'd done that, it would have damaged her vocal chords. I don't know why specifically, my guess is there is kind of a growl in the way she sings it, but there is probably way more stuff. I don't sing so I have no clue. She really does have such a fantastic voice, I've been so impressed listening to the soundtrack and covers of other songs on UA-cam. This makes me want to watch the West Side Story that she is in.

The theory behind Tigris is that she quit being a tribute stylist after Finnick’s year. She was his stylist and then learned that Snow prostituted him to Capital citizens. Disgusted, she ceased all communication with her cousin and became a rebel ally.

    • @fuzzyapple
      @fuzzyapple 4 місяці тому +26

It's not really a parallel though. Cato didn't regret killing all those other tributes, because that's what he trained and prepared for for years. The only regret he had was losing in the end and as his final act he wanted to take the tribute that betrayed him (Peeta) with him.
Coral on the other hand did not prepare for this, careers weren't a thing back then. She killed to survive, but was then hit with the fact that they are all gonna die anyway. The outcome (from her pov) would've been the same even if she just hid in a corner and didn't hurt anyone else.

  • @noxxpee
    @noxxpee 5 місяців тому +347

In the books, we read from Snows pov so a lot more things are clear, here are some things from the books that im sad wasnt made more clear in the movies (also just some fun facts):
-Arachne’s death was actually pretty sad. Snow hesitates for a second and Lucy Gray pretty much is the one to yell and tell him to help her. His commentary is what upsets me, though. He basically goes on about how even though she was a bad person, he still had known her since they were in diapers and was his “friend” nonetheless.
-Snow talks about what would happen if he didnt get the Plinth Prize (the money) and mentions how he’d probably sell Tigris’ body for money, just like he did with the tributes in the original 4 movies.
-Lucy Gray actually sings the same song that Katniss sang to Prim & Rue. Deep In The Meadow I think it was called.
-Rachel Zegler (Lucy Grays actress) actually originally denied the role of Lucy Gray. She was already away from family for a long time filming Snow White and wanted to return home instead of jumping into a new project, but she found out her boyfriend Josh was accepted into the movie. Josh plays the role of Sejanus Plinth.
-Lucy Grays cousin, Maude Ivory, had more time to shine in the books, she’s actually one of my favorites for absolutely no reason lol i wish they showed her more.
-Lucy Gray and Snow kissed much earlier. They kissed in front of everyone during that one moment where the mentors were interviewing the tributes and the tributes were chained to tables.
-Tigris washed Lucy Grays dress for her. Im actually really upset that they didn’t include Tigris and Lucy Gray’s friendship in this.
-There are theories that Katniss’ grandmother is Maude Ivory (like I mentioned, Lucy Grays cousin) or is somehow related to Lucy Gray because Katniss sings and knows songs that Lucy Gray herself wrote. There are songs that Lucy Gray never preformed, and only sung in front of The Covey or Snow and yet Katniss knows them. They think its Maude Ivory because she had a good memory when it came to music and could remember songs even with only hearing them once before. Maude Ivory and Lucy Gray were really close so it’s rumored that she remembered her cousins songs and passed them on to keep her memory alive. The reason why Lucy Gray’s hanging tree song sounded different to Katniss’ is because of how long it was passed down for. The pace of the song was kinda messed with. Katniss’ sounds kind of rushed and hurried while Lucy Gray’s is slow and relaxed.
    - Its important to add “Gray” to “Lucy Gray” and “Ivory” to “Maude Ivory” because its in their culture to be named alongside a color. Lucy Gray mentions how “The Covey always liked color” so its a tradition to be named with a color. In the books, when people just call her Lucy, she corrects them and tells them that her name is Lucy GRAY. Its her first name, like the name Mary Ann for example. You wouldn’t just call them Mary or Ann, their name IS Mary Ann.
-Also, a theory that a lot of people believe in. In the original 4 movies, you might remember how each District had an electric fence put around the entire District, the the theory is that Snow had done that so nobody in the Districts could run away like Lucy Gray did. But coincidentally, District 12 is the only one whos electric fence is broken and doesn’t work. Perhaps so that if Lucy Gray is alive and ever wants to return to D12, she can. And honestly, i believe it could be true. Lots of people dont think so because they think Snow didn’t actually love Lucy Gray, but I think he did because in the books he literally tries to gaslight himself into thinking shes Capitol-like because hes “ashamed” that he likes someone whos from the Districts. Also, he says that he wouldn’t marry Lucy Gray and not because he doesn’t like her, but he says he would rather marry another girl (i think her name is Livia Cardew or smth) but he says that he would rather marry her, not cause he likes her or something, but because he DISLIKES HER and he knows that “Livia Cardew could never make him feel like that. Not in the way Lucy Gray made him feel.”
He obviously believes in the classical “love makes you weak” trope so he’d rather marry someone he doesn’t love or even like, and then proceeds to use Lucy Gray as an example on why he needs to marry someone else 😭 in my opinion, its obvious he did have some love for her.

    • @noxxpee
      @noxxpee 5 місяців тому +37

If I remember correctly, he didn’t purposely kill himself at the end. Snow figured out about his addiction beforehand and knew he would drink it so he poisoned it. The Dean was the only one who was truly against Snow so he got rid of him, hence the “Snow lands on top”

What you wrote about him loving Lucy Gray actually supports my thinking that he didn't. He was ashamed of her, he mocked her family and songs in his head unless they were about him, he would have left her at the drop of a hat to pursue more power if he was given the opportunity. He liked her voice and her looks, like a shiny toy, not a full person. That's not love. He was infatuated and obsessed, I would say. The way he's written makes me think he's not really capable of love as any normal person would imagine it.

He can't leave her but she can't get out of 12 to go with him to 2. If you read his inner thoughts its not really about her telling on him. As the reaction says, she has no proof. Its that he is going to 2 and she can't leave 12. He would have to let her go.and he would never do that. He even says to himself 'What do I say, I love you but I love officer training more?' They were definitely in love otherwise it wouldn't hit so hard. Also, they parallel Katniss and Peeta. Snow has to choose between ambition (going to 2) or love and he chooses ambition. Katniss refuses to choose between victory and Peeta.
I don't think her singing in the bar means much, they changed that from the book. In the book she has finished her set and then sees him and sings one more song, The Valley Song. Which has lyrics like 'to see my true love go by' and 'the birds in the heavens know I love you'. And its the same song Peeta falls in love with Katniss to when he hears her sing it as kids. Lucy Grey doesn't lie when she sings, she uses song as an outlet for her emotions. When Snow asks her why she trusts him she writes a song to explain it. In the film they have her look right into the camera and sing 'I'm pure like a dove, when I've learned how to love'. She's singing that to Snow before she dies.

We don't know if Lucy gray got away or died. Just like the song, which she's named after, that she sang to snow at the lake, it's a mystery. I think it's written that way because she's meant to haunt snow even 65 years later during katniss's games. Katniss and Lucy gray share certain similarities. Like the Hanging Tree song. Lucy gray wrote it, but when snow came into power, he banned any rebellious music or sayings. Hence, Lucy Gray's songs so it was probably very haunting for snow to hear it from katniss. Especially since Lucy gray wrote it based on the hanging of the first man so snow was there for the original meaning of the song. Also, snow in the book questions Lucy Gray's intentions more. Whether or not, she actually cares for him. That's why snow tells katniss that she's indifferent towards peeta at the beginning of catching fire because snow sees himself in peeta, and sees Lucy gray in katniss. He sees katniss as this overall master manipulator. He also tells katniss in that conversation that they not lie to each other. Also in the lake scene, Lucy gray tells snow he can trust her, and in the woods later, Lucy gray tells snow not to lie to him when asking about his third kill. There's plenty of other parallels but that's some.
Dean high bottom at the end did not know the morphing he was drinking was poisoned. Snow took it out of sejanus's belongings and put something in it to kill high bottom to get him out of his way to power. That's why in Mockingjay, finnick talks about snow poisoning his enemies. It starts here.

It feels good to know that Katniss was torturing Snow just as much as he was torturing her. Not just because of his control slipping away from him, but also in his heart.
To me, it's also so clear how Peeta was much like Snow could have been had he been a selfless person deep down. The whole sharing your bread with the person you love, the whole doing everything in his power to save the person he loves etc. It's really telling how Snow and Peeta parallel each others, the same way Katniss and Lucy do. But whereas Peeta was selfless and caring, Snow was cold and possessive. It's crazy how deep down, both Katniss and Peeta represent to Snow what his life could have been.
As some call it, some sweet justice.

I've heard people saying that have only seen the movie think that Snows switch to evil was very sudden and unexpected, but the book is so much better at showing Snows very slow switch up. For example, in the book, Snow always HATED Sejanus. He only tolerated him because he knew his dad had money, that's really the only reason Snow did anything for Sejanus, hoping that he'd be rewarded. Snow also had a very weird mentality towards Lucy Gray, like very possessive and protective. I might be wrong, but I think once he thought that " he missed when she was locked up in the Capitol, because he knew where she was at all times". He was just very messed up in the head, and you can't really see it in the movie

I'm honestly glad we got this story instead of the Hunger Games of one of the characters from the original trilogy. I'm sure it would have been great, but the fact that we got Snow's rise to power and how despicable he's always been as a person offers so much more substance and context to the original trilogy. That's not to say I would be opposed to Suzanne Collins writing more Hunger Games books, but I'm glad we got this first.

Lucy Gray is the one who came up with the Hanging Tree song. That first hanging we see, the man had been convicted of murdering 3. Then the jabberjays call out (for this dead man) for his love to flee. It's also heavily I'm implied that only those in her music group would have heard the full song to remember it and Katniss's dad who sung the song is likely the son of someone in Lucy Gray's group.
I love it 💕 part of what makes Snow so paranoid of a leader is he never gets closure on Lucy Gray, she'll always be a question mark haunting him. Then one of her songs come back in the rebellion that takes him down

It's Maude Ivory. Lucy Gray's little cousin Maude Ivory, the blonde little girl. She is Katniss's paternal grandmother. She could memorize a song after hearing it once so Lucy Gray probably taught it to her before the whole situation with Snow. Then she passed it onto her son Mr. Everdeen and he passed it onto his daughter Katniss.

So, this story is much more complex than first meets the eye. The story explores three different strands of philosophy about the nature of humans and the type of governance required to govern them. These are drawn from real life philosophers and their work, and are represented through how Viola Davis' character, Lucy Gary, and Tigris view humans and the world. The story explores how Corio, through his experiences, ends up picking one of those philosophies - that of Viola Davis' character, and that explains why he does what he does in the Hunger Games series. It is actually a brilliant piece of storytelling by Suzanne Collins, and arguably the most important dimension of the story that is lost in the movie, it is much more present in the book.

Also Lucy Gray's ending is supposed to be a mystery like the Lucy Gray from the song she was singing by the lake. Lucy Gray is a fictional character from a poem by William Wordsworth, it's about a girl who went missing during a "snow" storm and her footprints being what was last seen.

53:51 Lucy Gray’s ending is so poetic, because there’s actually a real ballad/poem from our world, Lucy Gray by William Wordsworth. The Covey have a naming convention where their first first name is from a ballad and their second first name is a color. Lucy Gray is the only one who gets both from a ballad.
Anyway, the premise of it is about a girl who gets lost in the woods in a snowstorm (get it, snow?) and when her parents go looking for her they follow her footprints to a bridge where the tracks stop halfway across. The ending of the ballad is left a mystery, where some people think she died in the woods, while others think she’s still living out there and you can still hear her singing.
The song that’s playing when the Covey go to the lake is adapted from the poem, and that ending is what she and Snow are discussing.

But my only real thought during watching was more of a "what a little selfish coward". The way this movie is basically like "look at Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird's weird-love-or-obsession-idk building a rebellion!" and then- "'look at Coriolanus Snow snuffing out the rebellion he created 20 minutes ago-- also fill in the gaps of the decades he spent making everything worse for every district possible and every child who will ever be reaped for the Hunger Games yayyy"
    I mean:
    - Lucy Gray sings a song about how the Capitol could never take who she is. She gets her life (approximately) back after the Games. Snow makes sure all the victors never leave the games and become Capitol puppets once they've won, going as far as doing experiments such as the one that turns Peeta into a murderer.
    - District 12's people were allowed to roam the woods and hope for a better life through nature and all. Snow puts wires around all the Districts and purposely restricts the forest from the people in District 12.
    - He changes the "pupils from the Capitol have to help the Tributes" into previous victors have to train/help the Tributes precisely *because* he experienced how devastating it was for these people to lose their tributes, thus putting the Victors on a constant state of horror and depression and guilt.
I mean you see how yes, these games were twisted, but how everything that becomes even more twisted and cruel and part of a never-ending circle of abuse didn't exist until Snow came along, experienced the thing himself, and chose to push that abuse further. And somehow, Suzanne Collins/this movie manages to make you kinda root for him for the first third of the movie (if not more) because you're (we are, the viewers) a poor delulu soul who do believe people can be good. But not Snow, he never could've been.

She actually got her big break when she was cast as Maria in Stephen Spielberg's West Side Story (which is a really iconic and classic musical, and an even more iconic character) when she was just 18. So it's left totally ambiguous whether or not Lucy Gray survived (even more so in the book than the movie). The whole point is basically that you're not supposed to know and its left a mystery, which personally I love as an ending for her character. Also it's a reference to a poem by Wordsworth, The ballad of Lucy Gray, where she gets lost in the snow and what happens to her is left unknown. The symbolism is WILD.
As for Dean Highbottom, I don't think he did know it was poison. He talks at the end about how his guilt for 'creating' the games lead him to an addiction to morphine and he thought there was morphine in the vial but Snow had poisoned it to kill him. In the original books it's talked about how Snow used poison to kill his enemies and rise in power, and this is essentially meant to be the start of that.
Honestly i love this book and movie so much, the way it ties into the original trilogy is just insane and absolutely genius!

This is the only movie I’ve watched where I read the book first, and I was not disappointed. I loved it for the adaptation it was, and nearly everything was kept in (aside from the obvious time crunch of snow’s time in 12). I wish it ended with actually seeing snow poison himself and everyone else and become president (remember in the other movies, snow wears roses to disguise the smell of blood from sores in his mouth) and it definitely hinted that snow became evil more because of the betrayal by a girl rather than in the books it describes his thoughts better, he was already going to be a psycho without Lucy gray. you could see how both Coriolanus and Lucy would mutually desert the other and snow cared more for his family rep than anything, he would likely have later sold his own cousin out if it meant keeping snows on top. but still was a brilliant hunger games movie in my opinion.
It’s hinted by the ballad that Lucy gray dies, but theories are that Lucy gray is katniss’ grandmother as she knew the hanging tree song, a song banned for decades. Maybe coz her grandmother wrote it and then katniss’ dad sang it to her…

And the song she is named after is a ghost story about a girl who's footprints in the snow just vanish. She says no one knows where she went. It's a mystery. Just like she is. So her ending being so ambiguous is a reflection of that. Coriolanus comments on how he doesn't like the song. He doesn't like mysteries and ghost stories. One of the many foreshadowed points that highlight how they were never going to be good together

Plus the familiar lake where Lucy gray and the Covey like to hangout by, katniss has been taken there by her father and he’s probably sung it to her multiple times and named her after swamp potato since his grandma or mother (Lucy gray) loved the name so much. The author left it up in the air as regards to Lucy
He made tigress a stylists then messed her up badly
Also Mags from Catching Fire won the 11th Hunger Games
    I think Lucy escaped

The fact I read the book and didn’t even realize his hankie had her scent, thought it was just another memento😂 but it makes so much more sense, I’m impressed with how you figured that out just by watching haha

Snow poisoned the morph ling, knowing that he would drink it. Also, it is highly suggested in the book that Lucy is Katniss's paternal grandmother.

I'm glad the "I can't have killed them all for nothing" bit hit you too. I feel like sadly a lot of people view some of the Tributes in the Games, the ones that are actively killing others rather than just defending themselves, as purely evil, which isn't fair. I haven't read the prequel book, but from the movie, we don't know that girl's life. She may have people dependent on her in her District. She got dealt an awful lot by just being reaped, I cannot blame her for trying to survive.
I think this even extends to the Careers in the original trilogy. They were essentially brainwashed and, let's just say it, groomed, to be killers. We don't even know what age they start in the academies - it's likely their parents made the choice for them, and even if not, can a child really make important life decisions like that for themselves? No.
Unfortunately people do have a tendency to, like the Capitol citizens, have their favourites who they root for, to the point of cheering on the death of the violent Tributes. But the truth is none of these children deserved death.

The entire thing about Lucy Gray is that her fate is a mystery. She was named after William Wordsworth's poem Lucy Gray, which is about a girl who disappears in a snow storm and is presumed dead, but her body is never found; so nobody knows for sure if she died in the snow storm, or if she ran away. The poem is slightly altered in the book and is referred to as a ballad, but it is explicitly stated by Lucy Gray's cousin Maude Ivory that she got her name from that poem. Lucy Gray's destiny is quite literally told to us as soon as we find out what her name is: SHE IS TO BECOME A MYSTERY AFTER DISAPPEARING IN SNOW'S WRATH

My guess is that the snake that bit Snow was poisonous and it made him see things. So Lucy Gray wasn't really there and had already run away.

@@maddiem2890 didn't he think he was hallucinating afterwards? It's been a bit since I read it and I don't have a copy on hand cause I borrowed it from the library, but I seem to remember that.

I can't remember if he thought he was hallucinating from the bite or not, but on page 506 or somewhere near that the doctor tells him it wasn't venomous. I think it was probably more like a placebo effect, he thought it was venomous so he freaked out. @@katherynhoward3840

So as a person who has read the book and seen the movie, the book conveys so much more the essence of snows character. In the movie it makes you think that Lucy's betrayal caused him to act like he acts but if you read the book you realize that this was just the final push he needed he already had the mindset that we knew he just hid it one detail from the book i love is that he always refers Lucy as *his lucy gray* .
