There are many different shades of the Marshall sound, but every Marshall amp-from the Plexi through the JCM800 and Jubilee to the latest JVM models-delivers a certain instantly identifiable quality of tone, crunch and distortion.
That unmistakable Marshall character is very alive and well in the company's latest DSL models, which deliver an incredible variety of classic and modern Marshall tones at exceptionally affordable prices, offering possibly the best value of any tube amp line in Marshall's long, illustrious history.
The four latest additions to the DSL line include the DSL15H 15-watt head, the DSL15C 15-watt 1x10 combo, DSL40C 40-watt 1x12 combo and the DSL100H 100-watt head. Each boasts all-tube circuitry, a dual-channel design, full/half power switch, digital reverb and more. Amazing, each sells for a street price of under $1,000. For this review, I tried out the two combo models-the DSL15C and DSL40C-which deliver impressive power in portable packages. - Розваги
I love the fact that you did this with the Epiphone. Great sounds from that rig.
I have the same guitar...
OleWetDog: yes, certainly nothing wrong with Epi's. Mine sound as great as my Gibson LP's...
Scotty McLohr then u have a shit les Paul
@@george1906 have you had the chance to play Epiphone lately? Some have the same pickups and sound just as good. The finish is different and the headstock gives it a different asthetic.
Nicolas Ortiz Haha why would I, I have a Custom Shop 58 Les Paul.
I like Paul. I know he gets shit for whatever reason but the demos are informative and a good indication of the amp's sound. Well done Guitar World.
Blank Slate: I don’t know why he’d catch shit...other than the fact that the world's a fkg critic. I agree: he’s a good player and puts everything in lay terms...
thank you so much I was looking for a good amp like the Marshall DSL40C and i love that you used an epiphone for this demo rock on man!
Nice work demonstrating the amps Paul. You seemed to really enjoy this particular setup quite a bit.
Thanks for a solid review again, Paul!
Nice to see a demo with someone who can actually play for a change. Gives a much better view of things. thank's.
Best video so far of this amp. I’m sold
Great demo! Every time I see Paul play I know he's been woodshedding! Great player, always even better than the time before, thanks also for showing us that affordable far east production still gives us Les Pauls and Marshalls that sound like Les Pauls and Marshalls...
Great demo, love my Marshall
Great Demo! keep shredding
Finally!!! My JCM800 2210 costs to much to take on the road & I was hoping they'd come up with a re-issue voiced like the JCM900's or 2000's. This is the first thing I've seen from them that'd fit the bill. Keeping my 800 at home & buying the DSL40C for the road. Nice, nice job Marshall.
Paul you are just Badass on that epi thru the Marshall amps. I just got the DSL 40. Change the speaker to and eminence CV 75 and what a difference in the sound. I play a Michael Kelly Telecaster thru this amp and it sounds as good as any guitar.Rock on Paul.
Paul , playing a Les Paul , through a couple Marshal Amps !!! Doctor Shred is schooling us & the lesson is Cranking Out the Jams !!! Thanks Paul . I always watch the videos with you playing. Great Amps from Marshall
Best demo of Paul so far.
always love tour demos
this guy is a monster guitar player
No he's not.
@@timothytaggart3289 are you better ? We'd love to hear your greatness
DSL40 Is a excellent combo! wish I had the money to keep it along with my Mesa Mark V!
you know it's a winner if guitar world makes it sound good (Y) this will make a nice new edition.
finaly an amp without a hard name
great demo thanks
Oh yeah! I just bought a Marshall DSL15C has great cleans!
Great video
I always like Paul's demo's. There's no doubt Paul is right at home with this setup. I will say, just once I want Paul to do a demo, and start playing solo jazz😁
I bought that 40 watt marshall and its a tone beast
we use a shure sm57 to mic the amps
Thanks Paul, great demo. I have a DSL15 and its amazing. The only way to get that Marshall sound is to get a Marshall, and the sound of that Epiphone is just amazing, really professional. I ordered one in the hope of getting this tone. Why do people need an array of pedals and signal processors, when you can get this sound with a mid price guitar and a 15w amp? More videos please ..... 🙂
Rörtjut på rörtjut! Annars ett vackert sound!
Love the epiphone
I have ordered a 40c now =)
The only thing I can think during this is "where's his pickup selector knob?". I put a creamback in my dsl40 and it "completes" this amp. Definitely the way to go.
Perfect amp for Paul to review
6:20 for 40w
Well that was a pretty good demo actually.
Hi, do you recommend this combo to play punk rock? can I reproduce a tone similar to Ramones? Thanks
that's probably the best Epi flame top I've ever seen.
Nice Marshall. From Rolling Stones to Randy Rhoads in one amp ;) ♫ Friedman are the best amps on the planet, but these are great amps for the money and will do almost ANY rock sound you can imagine.
Paul, I respect you more and more as a guitarist with every vid, and I've watched L-O-O-O-O-O-O-T-S of your GW vids! Great post.
Played a 15H the head version of the the 15 combo at GC last night . It has no reverb but it sounded great . Wish they made a 40H head version . Considering getting the 40c or maybe the 15H .
Get the 40!
Incredible
I want the 40C so bad now
I agree that this is not the best choice for metal, but if you turn the gain down and use an overdrive/boost pedal, it handles metal better by tightening up the midrange response while adding saturation.
Thanks!
These are basically like a rework of the now discontinued Haze series of amps, glad I have my Haze it is badass, which leads me to believe these probably are to. Only thing that concerns me is it might be a real close copy of the Haze and the 40W Haze combo has some frequent microphonic issues if I remember correctly, still will be a home run for a budget series Marshall. The 15W ones are amazing for home use.
No these are not a re-work of the Haze amps, these are re-work of the DSL 2000 and actually sound real great compared to the nasty Marshall Haze amps.
The DSL40C appears to me to be conservatively rated.. It has pretty good size transformers,, PCB build looks very good,, (SMDs seem to be located on the seperate digital reverb board), power tubes are chassis mounted.so if biased fairly hot the heat from the power tubes does not affect the PCB board..
It seems to be better built than me new Laney LC50 that is the last ones to be made in England.. It has a spring reverb but the layout seems more messy and the power tubes are PCB mounted..And I can't find a test point to measure the plate idle dissipation.. My amp runs at 400V plate on its TAD selected EL34B-STR, as the filter caps are the more common ones with a 450V rating and 100µf. The marshall runs larger but lower rated filter caps in series with balancing resistors so the amp can operate beyond 500V.
Between this and the blackstar HT40... get the Marshall.. THe blackstar runs at ~385V plate has numerous SMDs and a very small output transformer,,and is not a full tube amp. I think the phase inverter is transistor driven..
The plate voltage is around 450-460V depending on bias level, and with just a 270 ohm screen dropper (instead of choke) and large filter caps,, 165µf (two 330µf in series) on the plates and 50µf (two 100µf in series) on the screens this is in fact more a 50 watt amp than a 40 watt amp, unless the power transformer can't deliever enough current..
Put a celestion vintage 30 and you can cut through any loud mix.. But the amp is allready heavy so I would settle for a Celestion century vintage.. (Will cut the weight down with 1.4kg to a final weight of 21.5kg).. A Vintage 30 would give a weight around 24.5kg..which is super heavey for a 1x12 with a single handle on top.. Believe me my Laney with large transformer and a 70/80 weighs at least 23kg.. And it is a beast to lug around..
sounds nice \m/
Throw a Celestion Creamback in these and you've got yourself tonal bliss.
I play through a Creamback in a single 12" cab and it's total bliss....shh...don't tell anyone. Just bought this amp and was planning on doing just that...putting the Creamback in....
pjmuck: creambacks, best thing I did for my extension;)
Greenbacks for me, sounds killer
Epiphone getting some love in this demo.
If you are trying to cross that road to fame a simple Epiphone Les Paul standard and marshall dsl40 will definitely get you half way past that road
Σε ευχαριστώ για το ενδιαφέρον σου.Στον BLACKSTAR κλίνω κι εγώ ,απλά ελεγα να πάρω εναν marshall.Γειά στην ΚΥΠΡΟ !!!
Just in case you didn't understand this from Chris's reply to you: the 100H and 40C each have an effects loop, while the 15H and 15C do not.
wow, pauls' tone is actually good for a change
He fucked it up at 5:48. Tone was muddy and fizzy
volume wise which is more clear in tone when playing at volume 5 or so, Marshall DSL 40C or a Fender Blues Deluxe (which is also rated at 40 watts RMS)? thanks.
I'm wondering if I could play one of those in my living room without having my neighbours go crazy or if I'm better off going with my old Solid State + headphones comb.
Debating between the Fender Bassmaster 15 or Marshall DSL 15c....any suggestions and/or insight?
Hi Paul, what mic do you use in this video for the 40c ? Thanks a lot. Regards,
which one would give a heavier sound, or are they the same
What kind of solo tone man? Metal, blues, rock country? :D
Not going to lie, there's a lot you can do with just adding a Tube Screamer in front of pretty much any amp.. :)
In the marshall website it stated that the speaker of dsl15c is 12 inch. In your description is 1x 10? Which is correct? Thanks
Thanks :)
I wish they would do demos in a band situation, I've had several amps that sounded pretty good in my bedroom or at guitar center and sounded like crap with my band
Yeah me too, but this DSL 40 is a monster in every way !
Ok Thanks ;) I need it for small gigs so i'm glad to now i don't have to buy a 40W amp
I would just like to know if the dsl 15 has enough power on its own to practice with a band?
clean tone is pretty hard to listen to, but when the gain increases, heck yeah
He should mention the power scaling. You can drop the 40 watt to 20 and the 15 to 7. The 40 watt also has an effects loop and the 15 does not. He should have mentioned those facts, maybe I missed it when I was distracted by TV when I was watching COPS as this was playing. :) "I was scared man. what I do? what I do? ...I was scared man..I was scared"..LOL...those silly criminals.
I'm glad he mentioned the shared EQ part, I seriously didn't take that into consideration and it's making me feel bad that I ordered my DSL100 already, maybe I should've just went with the JVM50 used.
+Brian mo do you think the 40 is worth the extra money for home use
+nunchuckerz - I use the 40 for home use and I like the results.. This amp is quite good with 2 mods.. 1)change the speaker to a creamback or a Warehouse guitar speaker like the Invader(good speaker and good company) they are reasonably priced. 2)the bright cap mod. It's very simple.. You just snip one of the legs on a capacitor.. You can find directions on web. This amp is too bright and harsh on the red channel.the mods resolve this. Buy one used and do those mods and you will have a killer little tube Marshall that's quite versatile.
nunchuckerz I'd go wit the Victory V40 instead of this
These amps sound good-Marshall tone. He sounds good, maybe even better with a jam track!, but still good.
yeah I got that :) Thanks though!
I used to own a JCM 2000 DSL (DUAL SUPER LEAD) Hands down, Best sounding amp ever for metal!!!! super thickness, but with awesome tone for lead.. I could kick my own ass for getting rid of that thing. But, you can bet that the next thing I buy is a 2000 DSL or that 40 wt Combo, that thing has great sound for a combo
I love mine ,and I use an Epi les Paul as well, also a strat and Epi 339- they all sound great through this amp- someday I'll get off my lazy can and make a vid- I just wish it came with a 4 button switch so u could change the classic from clean to crunch-
i would love a switch pedal to at least do the clean and crunch tones, but all 4.... wow... yes
The Epiphone Les Paul have a nice Sustain? someone can tell me things about the Epiphone Les Paul, the sustain an other stuff please
It only took 8. years but now i use the same guitar and amp lol
What is the volume difference between the 40 and 15 and then what is the difference in volume between the two at half power? I have a 20 watt single channel Jet City and it gets pretty loud with gain cranked and volume at 3. So I was wanting to know if the 40 would be too loud for bedroom volumes and if so how much the half power cuts down on it. I would probably be hooking it up to my 1x12 cab as well. I am kinda confused as to how loud my current amp is compared to one of these.
As soon as I can get rid of my old AVT150 stack, I'm buying the DSL40c.
Well, great musicians like John Lennon, The Edge, Gary Clark Jr., Joe Pass, Noel Gallagher, (the list goes further) play Epiphone, the older Gibson´s brother! Remember that the first Les Paul was Epiphone. It´s over 140 years old. Everything Gibson is comes from Epiphone.
YEA GIBSON JUST DID WHAT THEY ALWAYS DID BACK IN THAT TIME, WHEN THEY HAD STIFF COMPETITION THEY WOULD JUST BUY THE COMPANY AND POOF, NO MORE COMPETITION
Nice Demo, you should be sitting for Richie ! (in BJ)
Yea but the 40W has a Half-Power switch that cuts the output by half making the amp go to 20W. So if you're willing to spend the extra 100 bucks (I'm assuming, dunno the price range for both amps) you can get the 40W and use the Half-Power to do your small gigs and practices but still manage to have that higher output if the venue is bigger.
Yeah, that's right. It has a triode/pentode switch on the back. It cuts the power in half.
The classic gain channel on these amps have more gain than my mg15cfx in overdrive :/
Alex Hooi its true my friend
that top on that epiphone though...
why the mic in front of the amp?
Wonder how my Agile 3010SE would sound on this?
Is this good for getting the classic Marshall overdrive without spending over $1000? I want Slash-like tones. For heavy stuff I have a pedal so I'm not concerned about that
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!! very much so, I tried one yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it, I prefer it over the peavy 6505+ combo, this thing has a fat distortion also, I am getting this amp, I fucking love it!
I have a UK made DSL 50 head. These amps have much more distortion, more like a diode clipping. I prefer my amp. Big distortion is just a boost pedal away.
is the DSL15c louder than a Fender Blues Junior? thanks...
Les Paul - Faded Topbacco burst or Desert burst, I think
Thats a nice Epiphone. What pickups are in it? Sounds really great
Yes, they sound great and WAY more affordable
GAK! All great except for that "Tone Suck" switch.
Sounds really Slashy!
Tryna decide if I should get the DSL40C or a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III.. I play Blues, Hard Rock, and Punk. I dont want an amp that is crazy gain. Help me out
Hmm, depends on your budget then but you really can't go wrong either way.
Also, JP gives advice on getting his tone in these vidoes /watch?v=5kOIx7HbhxQ and /watch?v=i24e8icZG1o so you could copy most of these other then the Mark 5 specific controls.
This may get you a little close to the tone you're after :) Don't forget to add a little Verb and Delay which are crucial to the solo tone IMO!
Nice haircut Paul.
Hi, can you tell me what mic do you use to record please ! :) thanks .
How u gets a distorted tone with such clarity from that 40c. I suck at eq and cant figure it out. The gain know makes no sense to me🤣
These new DSL amps are awesome. The sound is just right for a Marshall, it's almost as cheap as the (fail) MA series, but a hell of a lot better. Paul's sound is also good for a change, let's face it, if he has a good sound, we all can. ;) Just kidding, rock on :) \m/
I heard that the DSL40C has a switch between 20/40watt, that true?
I have the dsl15c. My review.
Clean channel is amazing. Throw an overdrive or treble booster in front of it for an amazing sound.
Distortion channel is shockingly bad. Way to much gain and it thins out when you roll back the gain enough.
Tone shift is just pointless to me as it ruins the sound. Deep switch makes the amp really beefy at low volume and is great.
I bought a DSL15c, and within one year it had crapped out on me twice. I got my money back for it and bought a Blackstar HT Club 40. I suggest you do too! The voicings are a lot better.
How is Dsl 15 c? I want get Metallica tones.
It is funny because i sold my ht club 40 and bought the dsl40c I put a new speaker de cap19 mod and never looked back, the blackstar sounds very dark has more aggressive and modern gain harder to tame and on the clean channel sounds more Voxy than Marshall.
+NirvanA1Channel go 40C it's really not that much more expensive than the 15C.
+George Khoshaba I'll use it at home. I can t play at house i thought. My neighbours are too grumpy.
You can switch from 40 to 20 watts on the 40C. Problem solved.
Hey hi from Greece - Volos (Βόλος) can you tell me please if the 15w amp is ok to use it in my home , i need to tell me if the 15w amp is to much for home playing.Thank you i've been watcing you for a long time.
can you get realy clean sound as well?
Man, Paul needs a signature guitar...and call it the Great Paul :)
"40 watts of power or 15 watts of...(pause) Marshall sound(?)"
Can any of these AMPs work within a band (against the drums and all) especially talking about the 15C?
maaaaybe the 40 watter, but definitely not the 15. These are more practice amps and tiny bar gigs. For bigger gigs get the DSL100H full stack. Yeah baby!!
