I have a 99 4runner 2wd. And it tackles down a good amount of trails. Got me out of being stuck in mud situations as well. These 4runners are beast. And one thing I do I gotta say, it’s mostly about the clearance and grip of tires you have on. And take it easy with that extra full send haha. I love my rig. I’m at 198k miles and it runs like a dream. I know it’s Still baby miles for it. I have a homie at 310k. Still Runs smoothly and takes on off road stuff like a boss.
Pro tip: The later generation Mazda BSeries trucks (mid 90s to early 2000s) are just rebadged Ford Rangers. Most aftermarket upgrades are cross compatible, so keep a lookout!
I have a second gen pathfinder, and its not like its a super hardcore wheeler, but i just got back from definitely pushing it, it did amazing for the subframe version, im looking for a first gen now
The GMT800 platform Tahoe Z71 and Suburban Z71 are fantastic, rugged, and often overlooked overlanding platforms. They came with skid plates, a rear locking diff, 330lb of torque, and are extremely reliable and cheap to maintain and repair. Parts are cheap and everywhere, and aftermarket support is sufficient.
Ranger feller here, wasn't expecting it to be on your list lol. I currently own 4, I'm building a 302 v8 for a swap, a built mudder, and a crawler. The original squares are nice, but unless you're building a nice hotrod, stay away. The 93-97 trucks are equipped with solid axles, coil springs in the front and leafs in the rear. They came with 2.3l 4 cylinders, 3.0l v6, and the 4.0 ohv v6, all of which are great engines reliability wise, it isn't uncommon to find 2.3s with 500k or more miles, and 300k plus on the v6s. Get a manual and you've got a very capable and reliable truck, though its been my experience the 3.0s are the most high maintenance of the 3. The 98-11 trucks are a little bit more finicky but are still good vehicles. They have torsion bar ifs, and leafs in the rear with an optional 8.8 posi rear. The 2.5 is still a very good engine, the 3.0 is solid, but the 4.0 sohc engines are garbage and you need to stay away from them. The 4x4 package also includes a factory 2.5in lift and you can easily clear 31s and even 33s with proper backspacing. People really sleep on these trucks, very solid performers and when parts do fail they're dirt cheap since ford made 3 trillion of them and they share parts with the explorer, bronco 2, and even 3.0l stuff from the Taurus and Aerostar with tons of aftermarket
No Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ??? $5k all day long, 4.7L V8, solid Dana axles f/r, nice luxury interior, very reliable. I sold an Xterra to purchase my 04 WJ, 4" long arm lift, 33" tires and daily commute it. Has completed the Rubicon trail twice and driven/overlanded all over the western US with no reliability issues in great comfort. Not sure how you missed this one???
And a transmission waiting to fail. Not including all the wiring debauchery fiat/chrysler did to them. And that front axle is the same axle on the lighter xj. They should have made the d44 standard.
I think some good cheap options include the GMT400/800 Chevy Tahoe, or really anything built on those platforms, the 1G Kia Sorento which shares a ton of components with the Montero, the Chevy Trailblazer, Toyota Sequoia, and the 1G/2G Explorer.
Yes the trooper is reliable, I have over 200,000 on my 1999,. But he forgot about the Isuzu Rodeo/ Honda Passport which uses the exact same drivetrain as the trooper. My 1997 Passport also has over 200,000 miles and both vehicles are capable of making the drive from Alaska to Florida at a moments notice.
isuzu is very respected in australia and south east asia, the diesel engines normally go to 500,000 km before overhaul - as long as you do the recommended service intervals.
I’ve got an old Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) with the inline 6 and I can absolutely vouch for that engine it’s surprisingly powerful and smooth for being the smaller engine and has plenty of low end torque and mines got 240,000 miles and runs perfect.
I have a 98 b3000/ranger knocked named the goat. Stock suspension height and 30’s has taken me on amazing adventures with 16-18 mpg down the freeway to work. Clocked 1000’s of miles on Mt.Baker trails. Great trucks I got mine for $1500 and a new vacuum sequence up front for the 4WD. Great video! Excellent choice in SUV!
A 1996 isuzu trooper is best with a 5 speed. The 3.2L engine is waaaayyy easier to work on and has more isuzu than gm. Regardless, im so happy that he mentioned these!
I really like your GX470 with bronze and black... Nice combo! I have a 99' 3rd gen SR5 4runner; with 5speed manual and 4x4. My daily driver, with 6112's and 5160's in the rear. The only crazy thing is my Yoda has over 330,000 original miles, so I've been changing all the worn out parts as I see fit... I'm doing it all myself except for the exhaust. The manual is becoming very hard to find; especially, since the market held the majority of numbers with automatic transmissions. Happy Trails! 🏜🏞🗻🌄🏕
My daily driver is a 4.0 liter 1992 Jeep yj with 150.000 miles ,it’s completely rust free and in an amazing condition and it looks like new ,it has a 2.5 inch lift and 32 mud terrains , since it was new it has never broke down once and it only needed minor maintance like clutches ,oil changes and U joints , thaws 4 liter engines are made to last
Manual or auto? Havent heard anything good of the 4l30 tbh, but the trooper as a whole seems like a pretty good option. Just dont want to deal with a poor transmission.
Great video, if you can’t find Mitsibishi panduro. Look for the Mitsibishi outlander. The same architecture and off-road set up are in it as the panduro. I had a 2010. It has the old version of the new AWD setup(But mostly mechanical). I never got stuck in it. And I live in northern Alberta. We get a lot of snow. It’s faster off the line too. Older F-150’s should be on the list. With front lockers and two solid axles. You’ll go anywhere you want.the 5.0 would work. But the 5.8(351W) would be the best engine for a bit more power. I daily a 89 4x4 with the 351( with a manual). Plus they are easy to fix or get running in the bush. That’s once you know the ins and outs of the truck. With a 8 ft box, you’ll have a lot of room get your gear in and out of the bush. And that with a jockey box to put your tools, etc. You’ll need to have the knowledge about gearing and driving. Cause there are no drivers aids to help you. Being a older rig. That one is for you old school over landers.
I love to see people like you in the comments! Monteros are fantastic vehicles, however I was surprised to see them on this list due to their rareness. We have 2 2003 monteros and adore them! It tooks 3+ years to find each of them though. It’s very common for not a single one (that isn’t the montero sport model), for sale across the entire US. Keep on keepin’ on montero friend! Edit: the dude in the video mentioned a 3.5L or 3.6L. I don’t know where he got that, as I know both of ours are 3.8L v6s, and I’ve seen 4 cylinder diesels in Australia and/or New Zealand.

I've had a number of nice ZJ Grand Cherokee's and one WJ Grand Cherokee too.. my next vehicle I was hoping to find a super clean 4.0 ZJ Grand Cherokee with Selec-trac and the FACTORY tow package since they come with 3.73 axle gearing and most also have limited slip rear ends too.. I have a 3" lift and a set of extended shocks sitting in my garage for when I find the right one. Never know, between the Mitsubishi and that Isuzu I'd be happy with any of them!!.
@@BabyCharlotteschannel I’m not entirely sure why, but when looking at reviews of the “regular” monteros and the montero sports of the early 2000s, I’ve found owners to leave lower reviews and seem a little less impressed. I’m sure they’re still enjoyable, but it seems not as enjoyable as the “regular” monteros. Purely speculation because I don’t really know, but maybe it doesn’t use the same cast iron 3.8 or transmission that the “regular” monteros do, and are less reliable because of this. Or maybe the 4wd doesn’t have a locking center or rear differential like the “regular” monteros, making them less capable off road.
The Xterra deserves its place on this list IMO. First gens are slightly underpowered but built like tanks, second gens have their problems but are fixed with preventable maintenance and can beat pretty much everything on this list to 60.
2nd gen was one of the best and most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. Don't forget the 3g Pathfinder. Same chassis/engine and more room. It's even available with a 5.6 V8 and they are cheap.
nothing beats honda cr-v when it comes to price! And my suzuki grand vitara is amazing off road! Cheap, dependable, great 4x4 system, great off road and better interior design than most other suv's in its price range. Love it!
Did you really wonder if there was a better alternative to what you listed? Okay. Let's consider Dix, my 14 hand saddle mule. Now it's true, there will always be a problem with emission standards. You can't get around that with a mule, and there's no point in deniel. Plus, there's very little high end speed, as gearing is too far separated. But there are days of low end torque. And once you get the hang of letting them do the clutch release, it's a breeze to climb where goats fear to tred. I get about 50 mpb (miles per bale), though your milage may vary. There's a great deal of variations in alfalfa octane levels, so for the best performance, a pocket full of oats is a recommended additive. This is a no frills overlander approach with a very long pedigree of success. Saddlebags and a bedroll are readily a available options, as is a trevoiis in case you overpack. A .30-30 scabbard is an encouraged purchase, as fresh meat will be needed on long excursions. Their futuristic AI (Animal Independence) guidance system can be autonomous to a fault at times, but is unusually persistent when inclined. The 4X4 traction control is almost flawless as long as you don't attempt to override the AI guidance system. Yep, there are a few you left off the list. And these $1500 (average) brands are not yet in high demand, but I expect that to change soon. (After all, YOURE reading this, aren't you?)
Nobody ever gives the 96-04 Nissan Pathfinder any love! Great trucks, dead reliable, cheap! Mine has 220k miles and still runs great! All of the electronics and accessories still work too!
I have an old 93 Jeep ZJ 4x4, I have had it for about 13 years now. Got it as a daily driver and its fallen in to antiquity over the years. I am planning on reviving it in 2021 and turning it in to an overlander. Nothing cheaper then a 4x4 you already have.
God I have a 98 manual trooper that I bought with 24,500 miles and now she has 246,780 and I hit a tree years ago and dented the front like right down the middle and she still runs flawless, the only thing that has broke on her is a power steering house and that’s only because she sat and didn’t move for five years. I always went around trucks off-roading because the Izuzu is so light and has godly turn radius.
I absolutely loved my 98' Dodge Durango until it turned into an absolute money pit. Don't get me wrong the v8 magnum is an absolute powerhouse. But they should have followed it up with a beefier transmission. This video was a big help.
I loved my 98 Durango but after replacing the fuel pump twice and ball joints and radiator when it started overheating again I just couldn’t keep dumping cash into it
Bought a new 2006 4runner Sport V8. 14 years, 120k miles and not a single problem. Best vehicle I have owned in my entire life. Will never get rid of it. Will buy another new one next year.
9K lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee with Dat Hemi ( 5.7 liter v8 Hemi) shit for gas milage but it blew up a 18inch piece of granite I drove over with just a small dent in the muffler. Been doing trails all around Silverton Colorado. Taught my kid how to 4 wheel up there .
“If you got the money”. They hold their value almost superficially well. Definitely not the cheapest option, and you might have to get one with so many miles that it is no longer more reliable than any of the other cars on this list. Great car, but not cheap.
Or if you want to get your foot in the door. Get a gen 2 Xterra. You do have to watch out for the "milkshake " and some bearing issues. I got mine, an off road edition with some minor body damage ( thank God no panel damage. ) for 6500 bucks post taxes.
If you want the space of the Land cruiser but want to save some money, look into the Lx470. They made a lot more of them than the LC, so it’s easier to find a cheaper one. I just bought a 99 w 160k miles for $7k. It was alil cheaper than all the rest because the previous owner was way behind on its maintenance. It took me a lil bit to get over the alien eyes head lights, but this things goes wherever i point it.
Rick, look into Land Rovers. Just bought a 98 Discovery LSE w 75k miles on it and absolutely ZERO issues. Also more capable than about anything on this list
@@cameronjohnson3852 Aren't Rovers pretty scarse in the states? I know it's been a min but years ago I wanted a good tough 4×4 and had always lover The look of the LR, RR. But everything I came across was considerably more than I wanted to pay, not to mention at the time very few wanted to part with them. Also does Land Rover have a US factory? Ive always figured like most european car brands they're great to have to work on if broke down but only if your not in the US. 😆 At the same time shocked me cause I guess I never thought about it, but apparently Jeep is the same way if your trying to buy one or get parts in Europe. In my own experience the only LR's I've seen on the road locally tend to have their nose in the air, expensive as hell, and never had a drop of mud dry overnight on their undercarriage let alone dove radiator first into the mudd ways of the back country. Nor busted through a snow drift to remake a driveway and go to work. 😄 All n all Still want one though I only say that when certain my 2000 Wj ain't within earshot 🙃
I had a 2000 Toyota 4Runner as my first vehicle and loved it. Had lots of fun and drove it for about a year then rolled it. Despite this still love the truck and it kept me and my family safe while rolling at highway speed. Totally recommend!!
Oh my gosh my dad used to have an Isuzu Trooper! Manual and 4wd! Had it not had deer blood stains in the back that smelled on hot days (from the previous owner, mind you), I wish he still had it to pass onto me for my first vehicle! Instead I was given a 2wd 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country XJ. I grew up in the car, but unfortunately I was hit and she was totaled :( But she went to another 16yo who needed something reliable and cheap (she was very much drivable, just a large dent and slightly slanted steering). I was bought a beautiful 2010 Forester after that, and I couldn’t ask for anything better for me. With some mods, she will be a overlanding machine, but right now she’s a safe and go-anywhere Subie!
Another great vehicle is the 2002 Chevy Tahoe, it’s pretty helpful. The problem with having one is that it’ll have a problem for every 100 or 200 miles. They’ll come around $8,000 or sometimes $2,000

I got the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) with the QDII and the HEMI, Beast of a machine, even has Uconnect for the phone which is nice! Love mine, need to throw some KO2s on it soon
Lifting my Countryman for overlanding. Definitely not the best car, or the most reliable, or really anything else wanted for overlanding or daily driving..... but still, I'm going to push it and see how short it takes me. Need a list of things I can do other than tires and lift. Something anyone can do to a normal crossover or sedan to make it better for overlanding with the understanding that it won't ever be "ideal"
Regarding Subaru... Outback is the good option for off road in long journeys, Forrester for off road in crazy journeys and Tribeca for off road in family journeys. Is it true?
I looked at the Lexus 470 and I was really torn on wanting to buy one but ended up getting the Grand Cherokee because I didn't want to pay for premium fuel on my daily driver. they really are great rigs though.
I got a TJ wrangler sport for $4500 and after 2.5in lift kit competition 33in tires and replacing the cooling system and having to replace the rear axel bucause I was stupid and it cost $8200 it also only had 117,000 miles.
If you’re buying an xj for this purpose don’t get the 99-01 because an issue with the head cracking. Might not be a problem but if you’re putting more heat and wear off-roading or overlanding I’d worry about needing a new engine.
If people are not scared of long wheel bases, I wheel my 97 suburban with my cousin who has a jeep WJ. My 97 suburban has a 6inch lift, 33 inch tires (can goto 35), I have a 6ft long roof rack, the seats fold down and it fits a full size bed in the rear with room for a cooler still. Motor is brand new rebuild cost me less than 2k. Also has a brand new transmission. Parts are plentiful and being body on frame you can weld on rock sliders easily. Rough country also has a hidden winch plate for them and I have a 12k winch behind my bumper with wireless remote. Decent power, easily can pull others out of a tough spot. Only thing I had an issue with was power steering. The power steering over heats QUICKLY without an aftermarket cooler. I found a company that converts the Sigwa pump input and output to AN fittings, ran pushlock fittings and a big cooler with a thermal switch. Problem solved. Ive brought that truck up steep rocky hills that evens ome XJ kids were surprised I even attempted.

how is driving an economy car offroad better than using an SUV as a people mover? Just because it's a woman driving it doesn't mean she doesn't have to go off road at times. What ever "off-roading" you're doing is probably pretty mundane. And if it's not kiss your civic longevity goodbye.
The toyota truck from I believe mid 80s is fantastic. I have that and a 2002 4runner and they both are amazing cars that are cheap to maintain and are amazing for offroad. They even have 300,000 miles each and they run like they're new.
Got a 2000 Excursion limited 4x4 v10 430s with locking rear. 44 gallons of gas. Enough room to sleep in the back getting a couple inches of lift and I'm good. I'm stoked. Especially for the snow. Oh I got it for 6k.
A hint for german viewers: The Opel Frontera almost indentical with the Isuzu Wizard is a great choice if you don’t need a hardcore offroader but want to spend to mich money. It’s dirt cheap, very reliable and if you put a paar of KO2 on it it is capable to handle almost everthing you find in Europe on legal roads. You can get it with the same v6 they put in the trooper or a 2.2 diesel from Opel who is a good choice. A used one for hunting and cruising around Corse, Yugoslavia and the greek island and it never failed me once.
Everyone is buying up all the used Suburban’s and lifting them now for Overlanding, plus replacement parts are the least expensive and most widely available of any brand made. Have fun changing out the starter on that V8 Toyota (under the intake manifold).
The Ford ranger came with solid *axles*?? It only ever had a solid rear axle stock. Front was a twin-traction beam until 1998 then it went modern IFS style. Great truck nonetheless
Foresters and Outback’s are worth mentioning. The models that can brake slipping tyres to redirect torque to tyres with traction can compete with the best 4WDs in tough situations, just use decent AT tyres. Forester especially for doing that on high fuel economy, regular fuel on a 2.4L, as capable as the Outback, a bit less storage, maybe like 20cm shorter?. Though I ended up getting a 2004 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty XJ 3.7
The Ranger never came with a solid front axle. It had a twin I beam type front axle. A common mod is to swap Jeep axles onto it. That gives you a solid front axle and easy to find axle parts due to the large availability of Jeep parts.
I went for the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×4 with the 4.0 l6 with 100.000 miles with a 4 inch lift 33 inch ×12.50 R17 but bought new drive shafts, Replace the radiator so no overheating and ice cold air conditioning, did the best tune up possible and new headlight lennes with $400 lights ,I can't find anything that's needs to be done because everything is done and done correctly and it has original paint and its mint condition and mint condition interior with 6 way power seats, 10 pack CD changer and every other option. I have around $10000 C$ but it drives like it dosen't have a lift kit and big tires and 0 death Wobble and I'm very happy with the 4.0L6 on and off road and if I wanted to sell it I can easily get my money back but I'll never sell it due to the condition and I'm the second owner and bought it from a 70 year old guy whom took Amazing Care Of It .Great Video And Some Great Advice On SUV'S That Are Very Capable On And Off Road For Great Prices. New Subscriber From Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

I live in the UK but I recommend getting a Mitsubishi shogun/Pajero/Montero. The radiator burst on mine and I had to drive it home with no coolant. It lasted ages before it seized. And when it did it continued to work when it cooled down. Has happened several times and it’s still totally ok. Each time has been my negligence or a rock bursting the radiator etc… so it can’t be said it’s unreliable it’s just I’m a bit stupid with cars sometimes. I have the 6g72 engine. I would prefer a diesel though for the extra torque

For the Jeep Cherokee XJ, I opted for the 1994. Crank windows, manual door locks, 4.0L engine, manual transmission. Simplicity at its best.
4.0 with 5 speed is great! I have also 5 speed XJ but with 2.5 turbo diesel engine. Love that thing! :-)

They came with skid plates, a rear locking diff, 330lb of torque, and are extremely reliable and cheap to maintain and repair. Parts are cheap and everywhere, and aftermarket support is sufficient.

Ranger feller here, wasn't expecting it to be on your list lol. I currently own 4, I'm building a 302 v8 for a swap, a built mudder, and a crawler. The original squares are nice, but unless you're building a nice hotrod, stay away. The 93-97 trucks are equipped with solid axles, coil springs in the front and leafs in the rear. They came with 2.3l 4 cylinders, 3.0l v6, and the 4.0 ohv v6, all of which are great engines reliability wise, it isn't uncommon to find 2.3s with 500k or more miles, and 300k plus on the v6s. Get a manual and you've got a very capable and reliable truck, though its been my experience the 3.0s are the most high maintenance of the 3. The 98-11 trucks are a little bit more finicky but are still good vehicles. They have torsion bar ifs, and leafs in the rear with an optional 8.8 posi rear. The 2.5 is still a very good engine, the 3.0 is solid, but the 4.0 sohc engines are garbage and you need to stay away from them. The 4x4 package also includes a factory 2.5in lift and you can easily clear 31s and even 33s with proper backspacing. People really sleep on these trucks, very solid performers and when parts do fail they're dirt cheap since ford made 3 trillion of them and they share parts with the explorer, bronco 2, and even 3.0l stuff from the Taurus and Aerostar with tons of aftermarket
No Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ??? $5k all day long, 4.7L V8, solid Dana axles f/r, nice luxury interior, very reliable. I sold an Xterra to purchase my 04 WJ, 4" long arm lift, 33" tires and daily commute it. Has completed the Rubicon trail twice and driven/overlanded all over the western US with no reliability issues in great comfort. Not sure how you missed this one???

And a transmission waiting to fail. Not including all the wiring debauchery fiat/chrysler did to them. And that front axle is the same axle on the lighter xj. They should have made the d44 standard.
I think some good cheap options include the GMT400/800 Chevy Tahoe, or really anything built on those platforms, the 1G Kia Sorento which shares a ton of components with the Montero, the Chevy Trailblazer, Toyota Sequoia, and the 1G/2G Explorer.
For sure on the GMT400/800 and Trailblazers are dirt cheap, highly capable, and reliable after a solid axle swap....

Yes the trooper is reliable, I have over 200,000 on my 1999,. But he forgot about the Isuzu Rodeo/ Honda Passport which uses the exact same drivetrain as the trooper. My 1997 Passport also has over 200,000 miles and both vehicles are capable of making the drive from Alaska to Florida at a moments notice.
My friends first car was a Rodeo. Still has that beast over a decade later. Bought it for $500 bucks.

isuzu is very respected in australia and south east asia, the diesel engines normally go to 500,000 km before overhaul - as long as you do the recommended service intervals.
I’ve got an old Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) with the inline 6 and I can absolutely vouch for that engine it’s surprisingly powerful and smooth for being the smaller engine and has plenty of low end torque and mines got 240,000 miles and runs perfect.
I love my little Ranger (Mazda b4000). I'm still working on getting it overland ready.

I have a 98 b3000/ranger knocked named the goat. Stock suspension height and 30’s has taken me on amazing adventures with 16-18 mpg down the freeway to work. Clocked 1000’s of miles on Mt.Baker trails. Great trucks I got mine for $1500 and a new vacuum sequence up front for the 4WD.

A 1996 isuzu trooper is best with a 5 speed. The 3.2L engine is waaaayyy easier to work on and has more isuzu than gm. Regardless, im so happy that he mentioned these!
I really like your GX470 with bronze and black... Nice combo! I have a 99' 3rd gen SR5 4runner; with 5speed manual and 4x4. My daily driver, with 6112's and 5160's in the rear. The only crazy thing is my Yoda has over 330,000 original miles, so I've been changing all the worn out parts as I see fit... I'm doing it all myself except for the exhaust. My daily driver is a 4.0 liter 1992 Jeep yj with 150.000 miles ,it’s completely rust free and in an amazing condition and it looks like new ,it has a 2.5 inch lift and 32 mud terrains , since it was new it has never broke down once and it only needed minor maintance like clutches ,oil changes and U joints , thaws 4 liter engines are made to last

Great video, if you can’t find Mitsibishi panduro. Look for the Mitsibishi outlander. The same architecture and off-road set up are in it as the panduro. I had a 2010. It has the old version of the new AWD setup(But mostly mechanical). I never got stuck in it. And I live in northern Alberta. We get a lot of snow. It’s faster off the line too. Older F-150’s should be on the list. With front lockers and two solid axles. You’ll go anywhere you want.the 5.0 would work. But the 5.8(351W) would be the best engine for a bit more power. I daily a 89 4x4 with the 351( with a manual). Plus they are easy to fix or get running in the bush. That’s once you know the ins and outs of the truck. With a 8 ft box, you’ll have a lot of room get your gear in and out of the bush. And that with a jockey box to put your tools, etc. You’ll need to have the knowledge about gearing and driving. Cause there are no drivers aids to help you. Being a older rig. That one is for you old school over landers.

I love to see people like you in the comments! Monteros are fantastic vehicles, however I was surprised to see them on this list due to their rareness. We have 2 2003 monteros and adore them! It tooks 3+ years to find each of them though. It’s very common for not a single one (that isn’t the montero sport model), for sale across the entire US.

Edit: the dude in the video mentioned a 3.5L or 3.6L. I don’t know where he got that, as I know both of ours are 3.8L v6s, and I’ve seen 4 cylinder diesels in Australia and/or New Zealand.

I've always loved these for a overlander, camping and exploring vehicle. I've had a number of nice ZJ Grand Cherokee's and one WJ Grand Cherokee too.. my next vehicle I was hoping to find a super clean 4.0 ZJ Grand Cherokee with Selec-trac and the FACTORY tow package since they come with 3.73 axle gearing and most also have limited slip rear ends too.. I have a 3" lift and a set of extended shocks sitting in my garage for when I find the right one.
Never know, between the Mitsubishi and that Isuzu I'd be happy with any of them!!.

I’m sure they’re still enjoyable, but it seems not as enjoyable as the “regular” monteros.
Purely speculation because I don’t really know, but maybe it doesn’t use the same cast iron 3.8 or transmission that the “regular” monteros do, and are less reliable because of this. Or maybe the 4wd doesn’t have a locking center or rear differential like the “regular” monteros, making them less capable off road.
The Xterra deserves its place on this list IMO. First gens are slightly underpowered but built like tanks, second gens have their problems but are fixed with preventable maintenance and can beat pretty much everything on this list to 60.

Xterra is an underrated beast, especially 2nd gen.
2nd gen was one of the best and most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. Don't forget the 3g Pathfinder. Same chassis/engine and more room. It's even available with a 5.6 V8 and they are cheap.

Now it's true, there will always be a problem with emission standards. You can't get around that with a mule, and there's no point in deniel.
Plus, there's very little high end speed, as gearing is too far separated. But there are days of low end torque. And once you get the hang of letting them do the clutch release, it's a breeze to climb where goats fear to tred.
I get about 50 mpb (miles per bale), though your milage may vary. There's a great deal of variations in alfalfa octane levels, so for the best performance, a pocket full of oats is a recommended additive.
This is a no frills overlander approach with a very long pedigree of success. Saddlebags and a bedroll are readily a available options, as is a trevoiis in case you overpack. A .30-30 scabbard is an encouraged purchase, as fresh meat will be needed on long excursions.
Their futuristic AI (Animal Independence) guidance system can be autonomous to a fault at times, but is unusually persistent when inclined. The 4X4 traction control is almost flawless as long as you don't attempt to override the AI guidance system.

Nobody ever gives the 96-04 Nissan Pathfinder any love! Great trucks, dead reliable, cheap! Mine has 220k miles and still runs great! All of the electronics and accessories still work too!
I have an old 93 Jeep ZJ 4x4, I have had it for about 13 years now. Got it as a daily driver and its fallen in to antiquity over the years. I am planning on reviving it in 2021 and turning it in to an overlander. Nothing cheaper then a 4x4 you already have.

God I have a 98 manual trooper that I bought with 24,500 miles and now she has 246,780 and I hit a tree years ago and dented the front like right down the middle and she still runs flawless, the only thing that has broke on her is a power steering house and that’s only because she sat and didn’t move for five years. I always went around trucks off-roading because the Izuzu is so light and has godly turn radius.
I absolutely loved my 98' Dodge Durango until it turned into an absolute money pit. Don't get me wrong the v8 magnum is an absolute powerhouse. But they should have followed it up with a beefier transmission. This video was a big help.

9K lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee with Dat Hemi ( 5.7 liter v8 Hemi) shit for gas milage but it blew up a 18inch piece of granite I drove over with just a small dent in the muffler. Been doing trails all around Silverton Colorado. Taught my kid how to 4 wheel up there .
If you got the money just buy a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser best suv you’ll ever have been having mines for 25 years those things last forever
“If you got the money”. They hold their value almost superficially well. Definitely not the cheapest option, and you might have to get one with so many miles that it is no longer more reliable than any of the other cars on this list. Great car, but not cheap.
Or if you want to get your foot in the door. Get a gen 2 Xterra. You do have to watch out for the "milkshake " and some bearing issues. I got mine, an off road edition with some minor body damage ( thank God no panel damage. ) for 6500 bucks post taxes.
If you want the space of the Land cruiser but want to save some money, look into the Lx470. They made a lot more of them than the LC, so it’s easier to find a cheaper one. I just bought a 99 w 160k miles for $7k. It was alil cheaper than all the rest because the previous owner was way behind on its maintenance. It took me a lil bit to get over the alien eyes head lights, but this things goes wherever i point it.
Rick, look into Land Rovers. Just bought a 98 Discovery LSE w 75k miles on it and absolutely ZERO issues. Also more capable than about anything on this list

But everything I came across was considerably more than I wanted to pay, not to mention at the time very few wanted to part with them. Also does Land Rover have a US factory? Ive always figured like most european car brands they're great to have to work on if broke down but only if your not in the US. 😆 At the same time shocked me cause I guess I never thought about it, but apparently Jeep is the same way if your trying to buy one or get parts in Europe. In my own experience the only LR's I've seen on the road locally tend to have their nose in the air, expensive as hell, and never had a drop of mud dry overnight on their undercarriage let alone dove radiator first into the mudd ways of the back country. Nor busted through a snow drift to remake a driveway and go to work. 😄 All n all Still want one though I only say that when certain my 2000 Wj ain't within earshot 🙃
I had a 2000 Toyota 4Runner as my first vehicle and loved it. Had lots of fun and drove it for about a year then rolled it. Despite this still love the truck and it kept me and my family safe while rolling at highway speed. Totally recommend!!

Oh my gosh my dad used to have an Isuzu Trooper! Manual and 4wd! Had it not had deer blood stains in the back that smelled on hot days (from the previous owner, mind you), I wish he still had it to pass onto me for my first vehicle! Instead I was given a 2wd 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country XJ. I grew up in the car, but unfortunately I was hit and she was totaled :( But she went to another 16yo who needed something reliable and cheap (she was very much drivable, just a large dent and slightly slanted steering). I was bought a beautiful 2010 Forester after that, and I couldn’t ask for anything better for me. With some mods, she will be a overlanding machine, but right now she’s a safe and go-anywhere Subie!
I went with the Ranger route and i'm loving it! Super cheap to modify and super easy to find 2nd hand parts! Can't wait to get this thing finished:)

Lifting my Countryman for overlanding. Definitely not the best car, or the most reliable, or really anything else wanted for overlanding or daily driving..... but still, I'm going to push it and see how short it takes me.
Need a list of things I can do other than tires and lift. Something anyone can do to a normal crossover or sedan to make it better for overlanding with the understanding that it won't ever be "ideal"
Regarding Subaru... Outback is the good option for off road in long journeys, Forrester for off road in crazy journeys and Tribeca for off road in family journeys. Is it true?
I looked at the Lexus 470 and I was really torn on wanting to buy one but ended up getting the Grand Cherokee because I didn't want to pay for premium fuel on my daily driver. they really are great rigs though.
I got a TJ wrangler sport for $4500 and after 2.5in lift kit competition 33in tires and replacing the cooling system and having to replace the rear axel bucause I was stupid and it cost $8200 it also only had 117,000 miles.
If you’re buying an xj for this purpose don’t get the 99-01 because an issue with the head cracking. Might not be a problem but if you’re putting more heat and wear off-roading or overlanding I’d worry about needing a new engine.

If people are not scared of long wheel bases, I wheel my 97 suburban with my cousin who has a jeep WJ. My 97 suburban has a 6inch lift, 33 inch tires (can goto 35), I have a 6ft long roof rack, the seats fold down and it fits a full size bed in the rear with room for a cooler still. Motor is brand new rebuild cost me less than 2k. Also has a brand new transmission. Parts are plentiful and being body on frame you can weld on rock sliders easily. Rough country also has a hidden winch plate for them and I have a 12k winch behind my bumper with wireless remote. Decent power, easily can pull others out of a tough spot. Only thing I had an issue with was power steering. The power steering over heats QUICKLY without an aftermarket cooler. I found a company that converts the Sigwa pump input and output to AN fittings, ran pushlock fittings and a big cooler with a thermal switch. Problem solved. Ive brought that truck up steep rocky hills that evens ome XJ kids were surprised I even attempted.

The toyota truck from I believe mid 80s is fantastic. I have that and a 2002 4runner and they both are amazing cars that are cheap to maintain and are amazing for offroad. They even have 300,000 miles each and they run like they're new.

A hint for german viewers: The Opel Frontera almost indentical with the Isuzu Wizard is a great choice if you don’t need a hardcore offroader but want to spend to mich money. It’s dirt cheap, very reliable and if you put a paar of KO2 on it it is capable to handle almost everthing you find in Europe on legal roads. You can get it with the same v6 they put in the trooper or a 2.2 diesel from Opel who is a good choice. A used one for hunting and cruising around Corse, Yugoslavia and the greek island and it never failed me once.

Everyone is buying up all the used Suburban’s and lifting them now for Overlanding, plus replacement parts are the least expensive and most widely available of any brand made. Have fun changing out the starter on that V8 Toyota (under the intake manifold).

The Ford ranger came with solid *axles*?? It only ever had a solid rear axle stock. Front was a twin-traction beam until 1998 then it went modern IFS style. Great truck nonetheless

Foresters and Outback’s are worth mentioning. The models that can brake slipping tyres to redirect torque to tyres with traction can compete with the best 4WDs in tough situations, just use decent AT tyres. Forester especially for doing that on high fuel economy, regular fuel on a 2.4L, as capable as the Outback, a bit less storage, maybe like 20cm shorter?. Though I ended up getting a 2004 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty XJ 3.7

The Ranger never came with a solid front axle. It had a twin I beam type front axle. A common mod is to swap Jeep axles onto it. That gives you a solid front axle and easy to find axle parts due to the large availability of Jeep parts.

I went for the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×4 with the 4.0 l6 with 100.000 miles with a 4 inch lift 33 inch ×12.50 R17 but bought new drive shafts, Replace the radiator so no overheating and ice cold air conditioning, did the best tune up possible and new headlight lennes with $400 lights ,I can't find anything that's needs to be done because everything is done and done correctly and it has original paint and its mint condition and mint condition interior with 6 way power seats, 10 pack CD changer and every other option. I have around $10000 C$ but it drives like it dosen't have a lift kit and big tires and 0 death Wobble and I'm very happy with the 4.0L6 on and off road and if I wanted to sell it I can easily get my money back but I'll never sell it due to the condition and I'm the second owner and bought it from a 70 year old guy whom took Amazing Care Of It .Great Video And Some Great Advice On SUV'S That Are Very Capable On And Off Road For Great Prices. I was able to score a 1996 4Runner sr5 with 4x4 and only 116,000 miles for $3,200 and including the price I’ve only put 5,300 and it is unstoppable

They used a different name for other markets because "Pajero" is a curse word in some countries.
I live in the UK but I recommend getting a Mitsubishi shogun/Pajero/Montero. The radiator burst on mine and I had to drive it home with no coolant. It lasted ages before it seized. And when it did it continued to work when it cooled down. Has happened several times and it’s still totally ok. Each time has been my negligence or a rock bursting the radiator etc… so it can’t be said it’s unreliable it’s just I’m a bit stupid with cars sometimes. I have the 6g72 engine. I would prefer a diesel though for the extra torque
