I was wondering if you found special needs books for Rosie. Our daughter with Ds is now 40 yrs old! She did a combination of special need and regular classes throughout public school. I always wondered why they did not use phonics. They used sight words and she can read at a 4th grade level. She started teaching herself cursive as the teachers said she could not learn it!
She has now worked in the Mail Room at the Department of Commerce in DC for 20 years and has earned good paychecks and has quite a large money invested. Hope that is encouraging for you.

Don't take AP classes! Instead, look for a college to do dual enrollment at (in NC it's called Career & College Promise). That way you earn college credits for free! She could potentially graduate with her Associates completed. I just graduated from a 2 year school and my best friends were high schoolers, one a life-long homeschooler. She can also join clubs and other activities on campus.
My high school didn't even offer AP classes, instead we had College in Our Schools where we could take classes at the HS for college credit. This was great because the closest colleges are 45+ min away.

I agree! I took AP English in High School and was able to be placed in a higher level in college. I still had to take the same number of English classes as others who didnt take English AP courses.

I really admire that you don't want to sugarcoat history, Angela. That rocks and I wish more folks had that impulse. To that end, definitely check out A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. It is a history that focuses on the role that Indigenous peoples, People of Colour, and women played in America's history. A Patriot's History was written in response to it, as the author thought Zinn was too critical of the traditional narrative. I think critical thinking is good, though, and I love that Zinn looks at the role of everyday folks in changing the course of history.

Thank you, THANK YOU for sharing your homeschool recommendations! I just spent some time examining the Masters Books Language Arts and Math curriculum. Our son has Down Syndrome and is reading at about a 4th to 5th grade level. Almost every LA & Math curriculum we have seen over MANY years has been either way too complex or overly simplified for his needs. This made it necessary for me to be very creative. My heart leaped when I saw Masters books curriculum because it covers so many Charlotte Mason bases in uncomplicated, story form. My son loves stories! While he is now 23, I am still working to extend his skills to give him the best possible opportunities in life. I can’t thank you enough for opening our eyes to new and improved possibilities. Bless you!

the coping skills workbook would have been something I would have extremely benefited from while I was in school. I always struggled with anxiety and angry outbursts because I had no idea how to channel my emotions. it makes me so happy to see that you acknowledge those feelings and are trying to help your child work through them instead of ignore them. my childhood would have been so much easier if someone had taken the time to help me work through my anxiety and frustrations

    • @Olgaleigh

Rebecca spooner came out with a new curriculum that includes all your subjects in one unit each month and her history is real like what you are saying. Christian but no sugar coating. She has free samples you can try and see for yourself. Gatherroundhomeschool.com Changed my views on homeschooling and how I wanted my family to be raised. I tired The Good and the Beautiful and it just wasn't a good fit for us.

Hi Angela- This may be off topic, but I noticed you and CR hates when it rains because the yard gets soaked. I had this same issue last summer so I hired a landscaper to put in French drains (EZ Flow drains) and poof, the soggy yard was gone. Best Buy EVER!. It wasn't that expensive. If you want to know who I used, let me know. I live in Huntersville, NC

When I was in 8th grade, we did a whole congressional hearings unit where we learned about the bill of rights and the constitution and it was great we were able to look at Supreme Court cases and how they applied to the constitution and how to defend every amendment and what they mean to us as people. I thinks it great for everyone to be informed about this topic and perfect for 8th grade year because it gives you a sneak peek of what is to come in high school with history. In my case, we were already learning about the revolution, so the constitution fit right in. But if you do think you should wait on the material, it would be great for when Kennedy takes APUSH(AP United States History) or U.S. History. For the APUSH exam, it is always helpful to have examples of events or ideas that connect to the topic you are writing about in the exam. For the 2 sections of the exam you are required to provide outside evidence, so having knowledge of Supreme Court cases would certainly not hurt. Let me know if you would like any more information about AP History, I have taken AP European, APUSH, AP World: Modern, and AP Macroeconomics, as well as a few other APs and would be happy to make book recommendations.
Two of my AP history’s were independent study, so I have in-depth knowledge of the material as well.

We live in Minnesota and all three of my kids got into a state school with a very simple transcript that said basically English 9, 10, etc; Geometry, Algebra, etc; Biology, Chemistry, etc; basically just what they did and then their grade. I followed HSLDA’s simple transcript. I saw other people put a ton of effort into a transcript that no one cared about.

I really appreciate the preparation and thought you are giving to the transcripts and record keeping for your high school years. I was home schooled, and I now work at a local college as an advisor for dual credit students. I love working with home school families, as dual credit is such an awesome addition to their home-education journey. However, I am shocked at how often parents send me an editable excel sheet--electronic and unsigned--as an "official" transcript for admission. It will serve your kids well for you to put a lot of thought into how you prepare their official documents! I enjoyed this video and look forward to homeschooling my own kids one day.

More than once, and especially when I first got it, I would get going and have them not so straight and they would get punched wrong. You can also cut the spines if you want to bind workbooks and stuff on the top!

Hi Angela! I really like how in your homeschooling, you focus on teaching accurate history to your kids, sometimes diverting from the “sanitized” version that’s in a lot of history textbooks aimed at children. I’ve found that Patriots History is not great for that - it really minimizes the issues of Native American genocide and mistreatment over the centuries, Japanese internment camps, that kind of thing...Definitely above your kids’ current level, but I’d really recommend Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States - it really isn’t afraid to dive head-first into those tough topics. Great video as always!

If Rosie (or any other kids tbh) is into music then I’d definitely recommend looking up Jolly Phonics. There are free videos on UA-cam so you can decide before you buy, make sure you choose the American English though, I made the opposite mistake at first! It introduces phonics using catchy songs and goes up in levels based on the complexity of the letter sounds. My older kids join in singing the songs with the littles too

The Coping Skills workbook! I was just researching emotional regulation curriculum for my 1st grader. I was looking at The Zones of Regulation (which is I think what his kinder teacher used) and the Big Life Journal. I'll check out this coping skills workbook, too. Thanks for this video. Mom of 4 and first year homeschooling over here.

I would love it if you could talk about your approach to tricky subjects that standard american curriculum usually doesn't cover. Like alternate histories that focus more on black & POC history or non male-centered history that has been erased in standard history text books. With everything going on right now in the country (and has been going on for the centuries), how do you approach subjects like racism & misogyny? Do you have any supplemental books you have your kids read about this subject? I love that you got them the book about critical thinking & deciding court cases. It seems like a great way to help your children form their own ethical & moral belief system. I know it can be uncomfortable to talk to your audience about subjects that may end up being controversial, but I think its important to speak about how you are teaching your children to combat racism and misogyny, especially when you have 3 black boys and 7 girls! Thanks, love your videos and appreciate you sharing about homeschooling

As you're planning high school be sure to check into your state's dual credit (college) courses availability! As a homeschooled student I now think that those courses really helped to prepare me for full time college!

Wow. It looks like it's a lot of work to home school just one child & you have five in school! I've seen everyone basically fall into an exhaustive heap when their schools are ending the past few weeks just from home schooling the past few months because of Covid & they had teachers doing the curriculum. I have a new found respect for home school parents that do it full time.

I wanted to say you are an awesome mom. I am so glad I cam across your videos because they inspire me to want to do more and introduce more topics to each of my children. I am so glad you said you live in N.C because I do as well. If you don't mind would you let me know what all our state requires for homeschooling. I have been homeschooling my children with the k-12 program and this year I pulled them out to do something a little new and fun. If you could help me I really will appreciate it so much. I don't know if we need to keep a portfolio for each child or not. Thanks for your videos.

I read "Grandma Gatewood's Walk " last year and it was good. Definite descriptions of domestic violence throughout it, but like any other book you can skip over anything you don't think is appropriate during read-aloud. I also want to do the Appalachian Trail. I've completed the Long Trail in Vermont.
