@@tambuistuff Absolutely. I think Sting was surprised and kinda freaked out that people thought his song was romantic and not creepy. I don't think Lionel Richie even recognizes how bizarre and stalkerish this song is. One of my least favorite songs.

I have not heard of him. Was he a studio musician? In New York? I’ve heard of many of the LA guys , but haven’t come across his name before. Or was he just the “earlier generation” from Dean Parks, Steve Lukather, Waddy Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar or Tim pierce?
@@helenespaulding7562 yes Louis Shelton was part of the Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians based in LA in the 60’s/70’s that played on tons of radio hits and soundtracks for television and movies. Louis Shelton’s discography is a mile long!

Although "Wasted Time" is one of my favorites from 'The Eagles', I wouldn't advise them to react to anything from that band. They could risk getting a strike against their channel.
Don Henley has a lot of people who scour UA-cam for 'Eagles' tunes being posted/reacted to. I know of at least two other reactors who have gotten strikes after playing one of their songs.
There's even videos talking about Henley going off with people on YT making money on his music...

There was a period in the 80s when everything Lionel touched turned to gold. Great vocals, songwriting, production, & arrangements. A legend & a icon. So many memories attached to this song & the whole 'Can't Slow Down' album.

I never thought of this as a break up song. I always interpreted it as a guy who really likes someone but either cannot bring himself to or doesn't know how to even approach her. He hasn't even told her his feelings for her as he hasn't even started by saying "I love you" to her.

In person, he comes across as one of the most genuine artists that ever hit those heights.

I heard this song a billion times back in the 80s but I never really realized how musically good it is. Lots of subtle touches, that out of nowhere chord in the chorus, and the super tasty Louis Shelton guitar solo. Beautiful.

I never took this as a breakup song. I always thought of it as a friend who wants to take the relationship to the next level but does not know how to broach the subject. Although it is a beautiful song, I also get creepy, stalker vibes from it. This guy may not even know the object of affection and has only watched her from a distance, which is why he doesn't know much about her.

I remember seeing the video to this song back in the day and thinking it was about an older man stalking a blind girl.
That's not what it was? Because it always seemed like it to me.
I didn't see it as stalking so much, as they were in the same university setting by coincidence. But rather unrequited love from afar - he can't approach her as she's a student and he's a teacher. But maybe I was too naive at the time to see it otherwise, lol.

Songwriting ✅, Lyrics ✅, Performance ✅, Production ✅. One of the best ballads.
The melody is fine. The lyrics are horrific, especially the chorus. He says I don't know anything about you but I want to tell you first of all that I love you. That's not just nonsensical, it's creepy. Other than that, it's a competent sludgy ballad.

@@bitslammer I get that and, of course, it's just a pop song. I hadn't heard it in a long time and hadn't really listened to the lyrics. It just struck me as very weird for a full-grown man to think it would be romantic to tell a woman those words.
3 Times a Lady is another heartwarming tune. It's about Lionel Richie's Mother. Worthy for sure.👍

This was a HUGE album back in the day, Lionel Ritchie has such a memorable voice.
"Stuck on you" by Lionel Richie, from this same album, charted on the country hot 100. "Deep river woman" by Lionel Richie is another good song, with backing vocals from Legendary country group "Alabama". Lionel is so versatile.
All Night Long and You Are - definitely the next to hit. But honestly, the only way to process this song is with the video!
Stuck On You, from this same album, is by far my favourite Lionel Richie song; so smooth, so much soul, and quite a heartwarming message to boot.
All Night Long was my favorite solo one of his back in the day. The video was lots of fun to watch too

I got my ENTIRE shop singing this obsessively for weeks. Management was so pissed at me.
His music and friendship with Kenny Rogers was inspirational. I love The Commodores, His solo work and his on stage with Kenny. They were true friends by definition.
Absolute S TIER classic; you have to hit “Stuck On You” next, it’s unbelievable.
A friend asked my group of friends and I if we wanted to go and see Lionel Richie live in London (late 90's) and we all thought it was a bit of a joke, because Richie wasn't cool by that point. Anyway we all said yes go on and thought that would be the end of it, but a few weeks later the friend had purchased all our tickets, so off we went, just thinking it would be a bit of fun. Well.... the man himself came on to stage to a long intro of this song and every one of us got goosebumps to his great voice and this song that's so familiar. A lesson to us not to joke about a performer ever again!

The video documentary of the making of "We Are the World" is fascinating in part because of Lionel Ritchie's meticulous directing of all the other performers, over and over, to get their very small parts just right. The man is a brilliant arranger.
This album is almost a Greatest Hits! It might be good for a full album listen. He has a lot of ballads, but for his more upbeat songs, I’d recommend All Night Long or Running With The Night. These are both on the Can’t Slow Down album

Another song to consider listening to is “Zoom” which is actually a Commodores song but Lionel sings lead. I remember a concert of theirs where Lionel sings a short set accompanying himself on a white concert piano, midway through the second song the piano suddenly levitates then rotates on its vertical axis, he was obviously strapped somehow to the bench and piano. The crowd went crazy.
Next do All Night Long or Dancing on the Ceiling, Lionel on his party vibe!
I think "All Night Long" is his best solo piece, but I think it's also cool to see what The Commodores brought to the table. For that I'd suggest "Three Times a Lady"-- the backup harmonies and "oooo's" make the song soar.

I loved the one time I saw Lionel Richie on a talk show and his former girlfriend surprised him by being in the audience. They had nothing against each other, I mean, she was THERE. And they met each other for the first time in years and his former girlfriend said that her mother made her break up with Lionel because, "He was just a musician and he was never going to amount to anything." Lionel, the girlfriend, and the audience got a great laugh out of it.

If you really want to hear the best of the best from the master balladeer Lionel Richie you have to listen to My Love" or better yet "Still" from his Commodores days. Simply heart -moving and awe-inspiring in their beauty. Especially the latter. Pretty much perfection.
Lionel is not a flashy note singer, but he hits the right ones and that is why he was so popular, and still get plays today. Great track!
His voice is so gorgeous. Some others to check out are, Lady, Still, Three times a Lady.

there's a great recent documentary on Netflix about the making of We Are The World, which Lionel Richie wrote with MJ. He tells some great stories in the doc. You guys should re-visit that song now that you would recognize so many more of the artists singing on the song.
I've always liked this song, but I've always preferred "Still", "Truly", "You Are", "My Love", "Penny Lover", and "Just To Be Close To You" to this one. No matter. Lionel Ritchie is America's greatest writer of love songs in the R&R/R&B era.
When you talk about breakup songs, to me the absolute best one is Heart of the Matter by Don Henley. I'm tearing up just thinking about it....

It's tough to choose the next song for Lionel cuz he has so many great ones but here's my list in order from my most favorite to favorite. "Running With The Night" with amazing guitar from Steve Lukather, "All Night Long" with a fun party beat, and "My Destiny" with a killer R&B groove.
The "Can't Slow Down" album had some real bangers, but you have to be in the mood for this type of album, as far as something more mellow, poppy and light, but there's some uptempo stuff in there as well. Sheldon's guitar solo is very tasteful in this. Thanks for reacting.
I'd highly recommend you check out "You Are" from his 1982 album, it's more an up tempo number that will give an idea of his range with the solo stuff.

I read another comment talking about another killer of a ballad that Lionel wrote and he gave it to Kenny Rogers. There is a video of Kenny doing "Lady" live and you must hear it. His rasp is sooooooooooo amazing. He can turn it on and off at will. Gorgeous song - like this one. And Kenny's performance is epic.
