I found that once the castle nut is off, spraying with penetrating oil will help the stud pop out of the control arm somewhat easier once pressure or shock by tapping is applied. Spray, then take a short break to let the oil do it's job. Another tip is to remove the lower ball joint assembly by removing the four bolts. If it's not attached, it won't be subject to the shock of pounding. The job is a pain regardless, but damaging other parts that might not need replacing seems counter productive. My lower ball joints and boots were good. I was replacing the upper balls, adding strut lift spacers, sway bar links, and replacing rotors and pads at the same time (as well as inner and outer tie rods on drivers side), so everything was coming apart anyway. I did get a couple of pointers from this video, so thanks.

I'm going to be honest with you tho, you have to put more videos and diversify your content and I think you would be very popular.
Love your videos. For the next viewer: to separate the UBJ, I used a wood-splitting wedge(whatever steel/wedge-shaped object you can find), between the upper control arm and the top of the steering knuckle(next to the ball joint). A couple light taps with a hammer ...more direct/better-placed force... very easy. Good luck, other other guy.
Im new to DIY trying to install the new upper ball joint is turning out to be more difficult than I thought. I have the ball joint press tool but do I need to remove my brakes and everything? Because I cant line everything up straight to install the new ubj
I have already replaced the left side. That was months ago so I'm rewatching videos to remind me what I had to do. You have to have a ball joint press to install the new one so use it to press out the old one as well.
Thats a good way to put invisible fractures in the spindle... a $15 dollar pitman arm puller would make this a lot quicker and won't damage critical suspension components.
Absolutely,The worst thing is to beat on any suspension or steering parts,It puts microscopic fractures in the metal.Companies that have access to SEM's or tunneling microscope showed over the years that 30% of all accident are due to this brutal grease monkey mentality.Toyota had a recall on the main steering rod for 4runners and pickups in the 90's,Due to it breaking,The conclusion was that all had either pitman arms or tie rods replaced and the method of removal was beating or air chisel. The torsion force puller are the safe way to do these jobs,And they are cheap to buy.
The stud on my '02 Tacoma is rust welded in there. No amount of prying with the ball joint fork and banging on the knuckle would release it. I even pb blasted it well before. Such a pain in the ass...
Replacing lower ball joints after damaging them with a hammer: $150 per side. Buying a ball joint press to do it right and not damage other parts: $49.
Ah, but what is the method for removing the upper ball joint without damaging the lower one? My lower is still good, and I really don't want to destroy it.
As we know toyota have some cars sharing a lot of parts do you know if we can use rims from 4runer on 2012 hilux in the past there was no issue with that but now 4runner no longer looks like the hilux
I am not sure. The old 90s and 80s hilux do share the same bolt patterns with the 4runners and tacomas and my tundra. But we don't have any new hilux in the states
3 minutes in. No, hitting the upper control arm is not the mistake. The idea is to send vibration through the union of the tapered shaft and upper control arm, so hitting the warm out pillowball isn’t doing shit for you. Notice how when you finally accidentally hit the upper control are it popped right out? Right. To those who said it would cause fractures of whatever, no. It won’t.
If the coil springs are still good, the the BJs should be straight up and down. If they are cocked to the side, meaning outside, it means you may have lifted your truck and the upper uca is pushing down on the LCA making it cocked?
@@bobsyouruncle8052 then that is a spacer leveling kit. It probably raised your truck 2 inches taller than normal. Which means, you'll need a aftermarket UCA to correct the angle of you UBJ and LBJ. With the way your current BJs are sitting it will not last long. Also when bumping into pot holes, you'll find that the spindle will hit the coil springs. This will damage the springs and you'll have either a premature BJ failure or broken coil spring. Becareful

Hey man, can I come visit for a weekend and we can put an ARB locker in my 2000 tundra? Maybe stick around a few more days and install some new UCAs
If I have time, it would be great to help a person out. The problem is, I am so over work and my schedule is so tight.
Sorry why are hitting the ball joint and not where the bolts passes through the Upper control arm?
Why in gawds name would you hit the knuckle? Hit the UCA where the tapered fit is
@videostar2528 because that's where you are suppose to hit
What generations ?
Thank You

Good video, should hit the upper control arm or the ball joint stud since the upper ball joint is bad any way.

Yes

The UPB must be pressed in the spindle. its fitment into the UCA is only done by the castle nut, no press.
