  • Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) Ladder Company 20 backing up into an intersection. It's interesting to see the articulating ladder (called a tiller) using its rear wheels to steer. You can see the driver in the back steering the wheels. Great ladder truck.

      The ones built today are a lot easier to drive than the one he was on. On that one the wheel is flat rather than angled like they are today, he had no power steering, and he was exposed to the elements.

    It is actually called a "Tractor Drawn-Tiller Driven Ladder Truck". From the 1920-1970's it was common that the Tillerman was a non auto driver because the tiller steers opposite of the Tractor Engineer aka Chauffeur. It is NOT rare in the US as many cities with narrow streets or tight turning radius utilizes the TD-TD Rigs. FDNY, Boston Fire, Baltimore Fire, LAcoFD and Memphis Fire are just a few. I'm retired after 25yrs in the Fire Service. I was a Lt. with the City of Annapolis FD at Co. 36 and we had a TD-TD 100' Seagrave.

      No tillers in Boston. Last batch of tillers for BFD were 1976 Seagraves and they've long since gone. Other depts in the area still have some though...Somerville, Waltham, Melrose, others.

      The one I was assigned to was 63 and a half feet long. The truck it replaced was a 42 foot standard ladder truck (one driver). The 63.5 footer could go places that the smaller truck would have to turn, back up, turn, back up, and then the final turn. The bigger truck was a one shot deal. It didn't help the older one also had a ladder tip sticking 3 feet off the front bumper.

    • @dbyers3897
      @dbyers3897 3 місяці тому +1

      They are common in California due to extreme traffic congestion & lower weight limits on roadways due to the loose sandy subsoils. Lees common back east since newer trucks have a tighter turn radius &/or all-wheel steering (OshKosh/Pierce). FDNY has very few anymore. Boston has long ago stopped buying TDAs & mainly uses single rear axle designs. Phila, Balto & DC, Atlanta, LA still use them. Dallas, Seattle, & Portland each have a few. Tractor-trailer technical rescues, USARs, & hazmats are becoming more common.

    Could make the trailer axle knuckles steer in the opposite direction of what you turn the steering wheel. So in a left turn (for example) you steer normally to make a left turn like the tractor driver but the trailer wheel are going to the right, thus swinging the rear around. Turn left to go left, turn right to go right. I guess you could get used to anything if you practice but would make it easier. Kind of the same principle of a fork truck that has rear steering. The rear axle wheels go opposite of what you turn the steering wheels. And millions of those are in use by everyday people.

    • @DavidGHarris518
      @DavidGHarris518 2 роки тому

      That's what the rear driver does. He turns right on left turns and left on right turns. The thing is you can't turn the wheels back to straight at the same time. The front driver turns front wheels straight sooner. The rear driver has to wait until the trailer, not the tractor, is halfway through the turn before straightening the wheel.

    • @DavidGHarris518
      @DavidGHarris518 2 роки тому

      We always trained them for a month before just driving regular traffic. Usually in an empty parking lot. Then when they get good at that, we'll drive around town. After that, we then go emergency traffic. The key is the front driver communicating with the rear driver.

    • @josephheston9238
      @josephheston9238 Рік тому

      Basically it depends on either the worm gear in the steering box or the location of the tie rods on the steering knuckles. If the worm gear is cut clockwise and the tie rods in front of the steering knuckles, turning the steering right would have the wheels pointed right. If the worm gear is cut clockwise and the tie rods are behind the steering knuckles, turning the steering wheel right would have the wheels pointed left. If the worm gear is cut counterclockwise and the tie rods are in the front, turning the steering wheel right would have the wheels pointed left, etc..

  • @Sparkyyyyyyyyy
    @Sparkyyyyyyyyy 6 років тому +4

    Ah yes. This is called a Tiller. It’s essentially a permanently connected tractor-trailer or as some people call a lorry that has rear steering operated by a “tiller-man” (that guy on the back of the truck). These are used in areas with tight streets where regular ladder trucks have issues making turns and fitting between cars while backing up. These trucks are actually quite rare especially in FDNY.

    • @SaveLiveTV
      @SaveLiveTV 6 років тому +1

      "Used in areas with tight streets..." Oooooor you could also just use a smaller regular truck with rear wheel steering instead of literally using an 18-wheeler. Never quite got the sense of such a truck..

    • @Sparkyyyyyyyyy
      @Sparkyyyyyyyyy 6 років тому +4

      SaveLive TV have you ever measured how long a ladder truck needs to be just to carry a ladder on top of it. And think of this, that ladder can extend to 105ft. And can only have so many sections to make it stable. That means the truck had to be a minimum of about 20ft in order to carry all of that. That’s about 5 Toyota Prius’s bumper to bumper. Imagine trying to get that around a tight corner. So since they can’t make it shorter they put a bend in it and put a steering wheel on the back to make the truck more maneuverable for situations like having to position a ladder a certain way or making backing into quarters easier then a tractor trailer. These things are actually a lot more maneuverable than most ladder trucks which is the reason FDNY got these.

    • @SaveLiveTV
      @SaveLiveTV 6 років тому +1

      Just saying but there are european firetrucks less than half the size of that which have a longer ladder. For example this ua-cam.com/video/jlbHyxQ-4jo/v-deo.html a standart german ladder truck, 105ft ladder including a basket and a bending part. Many of these trucks include an automatic rear-wheel steering, all of those which Tiller Ladders dont have. Also there are ultra-low truck based ladder trucks existing since the 1970s like this: ua-cam.com/video/DEqYAW1i560/v-deo.html also 105ft including basket, bend down parts and rear-wheel steering. I know the systems are different between europe and the US, but in navigating through narrow roads europe is definitely a few steps further.

    • @nol7034
      @nol7034 6 років тому +4

      U.S. and European ladder trucks are really two different animals that have a ladder or the bucket as the only thing in common. As I’ve observed, the European rig is essentially an elevating platform staffed by two used for aerial rescue or to direct streams into a structure. The U.S. rig is an elevating platform staffed with four to six (depending on city or district) that also performs aerial rescues and directs streams. But it is also a tool cache that includes extra ground ladders, some rescue equipment and the crews have additional responsibilities for interior search and rescue and backing up engine companies as needed. Each is designed for it’s intended purpose. One is not better than the other, each is good for it’s designed purpose.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting 6 років тому

      Joseph DePaola just to say: most modern 105' Tower Ladders on this side of the pond are based on a 32' long truck (not the chassis itself, but including the overhanging bucket at the front). If a 32' long truck is too long to get around some corners, the departments might also purchase them with all-wheel steering, it doesn't really need a tractor trailer unit.
      Yes American and European Aerials differ a lot ...the size of the truck chassis which is "necessary" for a 105' in the USA would be used for a 150' to 170' high Aerial in Europe

      @@jamesrivera7618 Actually it's a common misconception, even among some in the FDNY. At one time Ladder Companies ( or Truck Companies) were called Hook & Ladder Companies. In fact, if you look at any of the the old "Jimmy Walker" firehouses, for example, you might see a H&L designation over the apparatus doors... and sometimes without a numerical designation. That's because those houses were built to accommodate two units, anticipating that a H&L Company might be established therein in the future. The term was later shortened to Ladder Company I think in the 1950s or 60s. Not sure why though.
      In any event, the term Hook & Ladder referred to tools that they used, not to the fact that the rigs were tractor driven and had a tillerman. A "hook" comes in various lengths. Six foot is most common. Ten foot is also carried. There was a longer hook, but that wound up in the firehouse basement. A "hook" is sometimes referred to as a pike pole in some fire departments.
      If you look at a FDNY firefighters badge, on one of the leaves of the Maltese Cross you will see a hydrant, on the opposite leaf you will see two tools...a hook and a ladder.

    It doesnt make any sense why u need a firetruck which is big as a fucking airplane. How do they maneuver in small narrow streets?

    • @code3paris

      Those tillers are actually more maneuverable than the twin axle trucks. Amazing but true.

      Dies make sense when you have to go up tall ass buildings you need long ladders. Long ladders you need long trucks
