Federal Signal 500SH-TT & Whelen Vortex R4 - Byron, GA

  • After finally diagnosing the coding issue with the new Whelen Vortex that was installed to replace this old 500SH-TT siren, both sirens got to run today for the first time simultaneously. Both sirens ran for just under a minute and a half of the steady (alert) signal at noon, in conjunction with Peach County's weekly siren test. For those wondering, the 500 still has an edge over the Vortex in terms of loudness, but the Vortex's sound will definitely propagate further than the 500 does because of its smoother tone, versus the raspiness of the 500's sound. It was incredibly loud at times from my vantage point when both sirens swung around to point my direction at the same time, definitely made my ears hurt a bit! Also, the thought never occurred to me at the time of the recording to even once pan over to show the Vortex, so I apologize that it's not seen in the video but it's obviously very clearly heard throughout. The Vortex is located about 500 feet east of the water tower behind the Byron Fire Department. And no, the 500 will not be switched off nor removed from the water tower anytime soon as the county hasn't allotted the funding just yet to at least remove it, so the two will continue to run together until that day arrives. If the bulk of the city's population can't hear a siren outside with these two running, they're obviously deaf!

    Love the melody the Vortex and 500 make but seriously that 500sh-TT beast still drowns that Whelen out with ease. Just comes to show Chopper driven sirens are WAY better than those Speaker toys.

      Yea electronic sirens would never reach 130dB it seems like. A 4004 or Vortex R4 is only about 121dB. The 2910s however do come close to 130dB but still, electromechanical sirens would always be around as they’re typical louder than electronic sirens. Nowadays they’re about the same

    Here's a thought, Keep the 500 for fire runs that the fire department receive, & the Vortex for tornado warnings, Like I stated it's just a thought.

    That's a cool recording! You should go back one day and get a shot where both sirens are visible.

      ***** Yes, that's actually what I was just thinking about earlier this afternoon. I may try to set up in the school's parking lot across the street from the water tower since they're out for the summer, which should put me inline with the two sirens (500 in foreground, Vortex in background) and both sirens should be plenty visible in frame. If the weather works out next week I'll see what I can do!

    Looks like a mix of an ACA P-10 (Air intake and back) and a ASC T-128 (Horn).

    I love how the 500 totally drowns out the Whelen lmfao. Vortexes are still great sirens tho, I just wish they were 125dB just like the 500. At least the 2910s are 129dB

    I was curious to ask. The 500SH-TT as you have it listed in this video is the same thing as a 500AT right? Just using the full model number, correct?

    • @umbrefawx
      @umbrefawx 9 років тому

      umbrefawx Or was this the model produced after the 500AT? I know the Regular 500T is a 9/12 port, i'm assuming this is the 10/12 port version by the sounds of it. I wasn't sure if they where the same or not but do notice this one has a different intake cone, figured id ask. You'd probably know better then most folks.

    • @murrfarms
      @murrfarms  9 років тому

      umbrefawx I'm not really sure where this big guy fell into the timeline compared with the other 500 models of the same styling, but yes, the "500SH-TT" nomenclature is just the full model type that's listed on the ID plate. I think the actual "500AT" designation is what the 9/12 version has as a model number, but I'm not really sure. That's the only part that really sucks when it comes to the 500 series sirens, there is so little information on them out there and most of what is out there is from either whatever literature people could actually find specifics about the 500 in, or just from real-world experience of seeing what type/styling has what numbers listed on its ID plate and such.

      may i ask is there such thing as a Federal Signal 500BT?

    • @murrfarms
      @murrfarms  8 років тому

      Mr.Someone Yes, there was both a "500B" (12-port single tone, single phase) and a "500BT" (9/12 dual tone, single phase) offered alongside the standard "-A" and "-AT" at the time. As far as I know there wasn't a single phase option available for the 10/12 "500SH-TT" like this one, simply because the chopper load was too great for any of the common single phase motor sizes available at that time.

    Does the Vortex have pitch fluctuations?

    • @freebrickproductions
      @freebrickproductions 9 років тому

      stormblade123hsm Really only the 2001-130s have that, and from what I remember, that's because of the wind sometimes reducing the load on the chopper causing the motor to spin it faster.

    • @DJ2226
      @DJ2226 9 років тому

      stormblade123hsm Nope. The 10 port side of the 500T puts out 575 Hz while the Whelen is doing 560 Hz. The tones clash like they would on German dual toned sirens running 415/425 Hz.

    • @TheMatsushitaMan
      @TheMatsushitaMan 9 років тому

      DJ2226 I concentrated on the Vortex and it seemed to fluctuate. It must be the wind.

    • @TheMatsushitaMan
      @TheMatsushitaMan 9 років тому

      ***** The 500AT did not fluctuate. It held a steady pitch in the face of wind.

    • @freebrickproductions
      @freebrickproductions 9 років тому

      stormblade123hsm I was referring to 2001-130s in my comment, on 500ATs. I think what you heard was just the wind causing the Whelen to sound like it was "fluctuating".

      PINKBOY1006 That's the 10 port side of the 500's rotor harmonizing with the Whelen's tone, as both sirens are in the mid-500 Hz range.
