- Yes, they are both loud. The Vortex R4 is replacing the 500T, but for the moment the sirens will run together until funds are available to have the siren restored and relocated elsewhere in the town.
That was probably one of the most insane siren experieces I've ever had. Sounded so freaky with both running together.

Come to Sampson Alabama on Thursday every week
They activate their vortex and darley champion
(Champion is on the rusty water tower
That 500AT is still fighting.
Happy they are moving it and not scrapping it! Nice vid!
They both spin like brothers
That’s epic dude! Two sirens in one!
Old sirens all the way!
ok bro lmao
R.I.P the 500-AT. Was removed at some sort of time period.
The Whelen WINS
It sounds that way in the video, but that was from me being closer to the Vortex. They are both pretty much equal.
The 500 sounds better in my opinion
How come in this video it seems to be running a 2020 but it Ians video with all signals it seems to be a 2030?
sirenfan97 it was "downgraded" to a 2020 afterwards. The 2030 couldn't decode the DTMF that the county used. If I remember correctly at the time they used Whelen's DTMF protocol but the rate of fire of the tones was way slower than the typical one.
why is the 500at mounted on the legs of a water tower?
Why not?
+Pro Viper It just seems... weird.
it probably was cheaper and more sturdy
Patrick Murphy there are tons of sirens on water towers here in oklahoma
Conner Tate Oklahoma gang
Not a 500at guys. It’s called a 500shtt.
The 500AT wins, he was much closer to the Whelen and the 500 was still clearly heard at most times.
No the 500 is old and underpowered the Whelen 4004 wins this round
+Pro Viper No, we were setup much closer the vortex.
+Pro Viper That 500 is far from underpowered, and being "old" has nothing to do with a siren's performance. Trust me, I was sitting almost directly in between the two sirens at the same time and that 500 was at least equivalently as loud as the Vortex if not a tiny bit louder. However I can also say that where the Vortex reigns superior is in the far-field performance, as the wave shape of its sound (and it having only one tone instead of two) carries much further than the 500 does. Up close to the two, the 500 definitely "wins" the loudness factor in my opinion.
Awesome
old school all the way
how loud does the federal 500 get?
It’s about 125 at 100’ its close to a thunderbolt
@@xtramayo3727 yea it is 2 decibels quieter. Some thunderbolts however can reach 132dB if they are maintained properly and have a properly working 5M (A2) blower. Although silverstreet is very old, it still reaches 132dB bc it works properly and is maintained well
That Vortex is as loud as the 500AT! I’m surprised that Vortex’s can get that loud
The 500 was louder. The Vortex will outperform it in range though since it's single tone and has a much more focused beam of sound.
@@DJ2226 Oh, in the video the Whelen seems just as loud as the 500.
I think the whelen won that one, but only barely.
Loud Whelen 3016 And Federal 500AT Siren. One sounds like a 3T22 cuz same chopper
500AT has a faster response time when starting up. Both start wind down together. But where is the 500AT going?
7367Network 500at is a mechanical siren
The 500, if memory serves, is to be relocated elsewhere in town
The siren on the water tower sounds like alerter 125
did the 550at replace that whelen?
mimiguy tale no? :( at least there not scrapping it and placing it somewhere else.
+mimiguy 2 Nope the whelen replaced the 500AT. though it isn't really a replace its a reposition almost. the 500at is being moved somewhere else to cover more distance
sounded like a 3t22 at one point.
Where is this located exactly?
@MyMy TV they said "exactly"
Wait, I thought it was a 500SH-TT
It is, people get them mixed up all the time. The early model 500s like this one were called the 500SH-TT and 500SH; SH standing for Single Head, and TT standing for Two Tone. This old naming scheme was also used on other units as well, even the Thunderbolt 1000T was called 1000-TT in catalogues and such. The later model 500s, where they switched to 9/12 were called 500 and 500T to simplify the naming scheme.
Nicodo 123 Same
I thought it was too
I think new wins just because voice capabilities
The Vortex isn't voice capable.
+DJ2226 I keep getting mixed up with the 4000 mind my mistake.
Wow
The water towr
Whelen drowns 500at
I was a little closer to the Vortex than the 500. At an equal distance they are both on par with each other with the 500 being slightly louder up close.
In alert
Whelan vortex R4: 1
Federal 500AT: 0
Nope 500 packs more punch I know because I used to live there
