I’m disappointed to see Man at the Garden so misunderstood by the internet. He begins the song claiming something so profound: “Twice emotional stability a sound body and tranquility - I deserve it all” The song becomes a checklist of things that truly show to matter in life & are worth the effort. It’s a mantra to remind self of what it takes to achieve that (why he deserves it) and the contrast of deserving those things regardless of any of your efforts (why he doesn’t necessarily “deserve” any of it because it’s also grace, heaven, ancestors, etc: “we deserve it all”).

    • @andylin9523
      @andylin9523 2 місяці тому +7

The internet has always been a cesspool it’s just become more toxic and cynical overtime, nobody deserves anything and everything needs to be a personal achievement. Even though we’re social animals anything to do with community and helping your fellow man has been dumbed down to “spooky Marxism”. We all deserve a base level in our modern society and yet people will bend over backwards to actively keep others down. Everything Kendrick has been trying to promote is helping yourself so that you can help others and build community.

Kendrick to me is like the great rock bands of the days. Pink Floyd for example. Anyone of their records could be someone’s favourite and they have a valid reason behind thinking so. The same applies for Kendrick. You could tell me Untitled Unmastered and I’d be like, shit I understand lol 😂

Luther doesn't read as _control_ to me at all but, rather, a love song but a love song about hip hop and his love of black music, people, and culture. (Take your enemies in front god introduce `em to that light, concrete flowers grow, I just wanna see you win, I wouldn't give these nobodies no sympathy, and even when he's on about the "'Rari, crown, wrist, froze," these are common symbols appearing in rap music and hip hop culture. And "pound, on the way home," is referring to speakers."
This one makes me tear up a little bit. It's very endearing to me, the earnest desire for the hip hop community to see and value themselves and their creations the way he sees and values them.

Some of these songs on the album are definitely only understood by the ones who live what he is talking about. To me Luther is a song that says so much about modern relationships that may have good intentions at heart but with the “world not being ours” there are so many distractions & disappointments that stop us from being our best selves for self & for the ones we love. This is why he mentions introducing your demons to God and destroying them with “fire”. So genius… this world = heartache “She just doing what she know”. As soon as I heard this song, I felt it I understood it cause I live it every day as the “victim” and the “villain”. That “better days coming fasho” line hits in a different way when you understand the pain tucked into these type of love stories.

This whole album feels like kendrick making an excuse to get busy and utilize the moment to create something that reflects his life at the moment. A public diary that all his collaborators can use to help build up the west coast artists he put on. And it's also display of his faith in God, his endless passion to fight for what he thinks is right and to pay tribute to hiphop and the ability he was blessed with and nurtured. Furthermore, it always stays personal and close to his heart so he has to always look within himself and recognize his flaws when they appear to him as well as embrace them to his own benefit.

Gates is a great shout but I'd also say a large part of the influence for Kendrick talking to God comes from the song 'Oh my God' by Sticky Fingaz in which Sticky also talks to God and the effect used on the God voice are almost identical. Anyway, check that song out if you get a chance. It's incredible as is that album 'Black Trash, The Autobiography of Kirk jones.' It's a rap album intentionally constructed to follow a filmic narrative. Very cool! - Oh and great vid!

15:59 The original song is a classic Black staple!! It’s something our parents and Grandparents played a lot, definitely music you’d hear in a GNX for sure, with a lot of 80’s music- like the sample you hear in Squabble Up, the Latin interludes and that meld with LatinX culture- the Nas sample, Tupac sample, SWV sample- very intentional classic Black music samples. I can’t get enough of all the layers to this record.

But i now believe Kendrick planned all of this! Bc 1stPS came out in Oct. So that could be when he planned out these 18 months. I think he was told he is on the list for the SB after his '22 performance with Dre. Its not crazy for him to plan performing at the SB.
And we dont know when Kendrick laid down the Like Dat verse, but i BELIEVE he had '24-'25 mapped out BEFORE it dropped.

You should consider really diving into Gloria a little more. First, he DID help his friends. In fact, Kendrick’s main job was as a hype man. He was supposed to back Jay Rock and push him to the front. He did that for years. Remember, Kendrick didn’t really start getting solo gigs until he was 25 or thereabouts, even though he was with TDE at 16 years old. Bottom line is that he paid his dues and wanted to do his solo work. Second, he DID put other, up and coming artists on. Indeed, he’s been putting other artists on for years, including SZA, Rapsody and J Hitter 3.

The GNX works on so many levels but the most important piece is the role of the GNX is in LA culture. It is a coveted car from collectors cause of the limited production but also because in the streets of LA it represents the culture of the music and the spirit of Black and LatinX people in LA especially “Past the 10”. It is a direct call out that drives home what he said about Drake and culture vultures. They have no true connection to what the soul of hip hop is even though they masquerade in the cars, clothes, and jewels, it’s like yo he doesn’t even go to this school😂 But it does put an exclamation point on his thought and discourse around culture and authenticity and respect for the lineage of hip hop. You can’t fake real.

THE TIME HAS COME!!!!!!!! Been waiting for your breakdown since the prophet Kendrick spoke his word on that bright and early morning🙏🏾 I'm gonna say the same thing I mentioned on the Grits & Eggs Podcast: Kendrick wasn't the one asking us about being conflicted after all LOL He said he got a spirit within him............Drake woke up Anubis/Anansi/Ogun & had this man speaking on behalf of Lucy himself all in the song reincarnated. "I rewrote the devil's story just to take our power back, reincarnated."
P.S: we're seeing the record Euphoria happen in real-time with the fact that Drake is now Suing UMG and Spotify. Go back and listen to that and his verse on the /America Has a Problem remix/.

I think that his savior complex, while it was shed with Mr. Morale, does still live on as a sort of leader for the culture: I can’t contextualize this properly, but I think that he does see this as how he rebuilds his ego after Mr. Morale. He needed to be vulnerable, or take down his defense mechanisms as said in the Mr. Morale concert film, to regain that ego, albeit on a much smaller scale, to only come out(or pop out) when necessary. That’s a theme in the beef, it’s that Drake *needed* to be taken down, and to an extent the industry needs to be taken down.
    Thoughts might be in replies.

I got a ton of shit on r*ddit because I said tv off was one of the weaker tracks on the album. I love the song but it's one of the most basic "give em what they ask for" tracks. It goes hard like any Kendrick track and I'd say it's like an 8/10 but the rest of the album is just so great I don't think it stands up to everything around it.

I mentioned that at the end of the video a bit, but I feel like every time someone has tried to sell me on any type of “second album” theory it hasn’t come true😭
