Luther doesn't read as _control_ to me at all but, rather, a love song but a love song about hip hop and his love of black music, people, and culture. (Take your enemies in front god introduce `em to that light, concrete flowers grow, I just wanna see you win, I wouldn't give these nobodies no sympathy, and even when he's on about the "'Rari, crown, wrist, froze," these are common symbols appearing in rap music and hip hop culture. And "pound, on the way home," is referring to speakers." This one makes me tear up a little bit. It's very endearing to me, the earnest desire for the hip hop community to see and value themselves and their creations the way he sees and values them.
This album is flawless in my opinion. Zero bad songs. It's now tied with Good Kid Maad City as my favorite Kendrick album. For real. I'm gonna bump this forever 😂
I believe every message aimed at a love interest or a woman in this project is a message for music/hip hop culture/rap as the love interest. Culminating in the most important component to the relationship, Gloria.
Im a Mac Miller lover (Swimming and Circles mostly) but Kendrick is a close 2 and my number 1 living… glad I found your Channel.. i struggle with thinking its not for me… im 44 and white but seeing channels like yours lake me feel more welcome:)💚
My second thought when I saw the new album was that I couldn't wait to see your video essays on it. And you definitely nailed your predictions on what the album would be
Gates is a great shout but I'd also say a large part of the influence for Kendrick talking to God comes from the song 'Oh my God' by Sticky Fingaz in which Sticky also talks to God and the effect used on the God voice are almost identical. Anyway, check that song out if you get a chance. It's incredible as is that album 'Black Trash, The Autobiography of Kirk jones.' It's a rap album intentionally constructed to follow a filmic narrative. Very cool! - Oh and great vid!
Do you think the Spanish at the beginning of wacced out murals and gloria are of any significance to those songs and understanding their meanings? Also if I'm not mistaken they are sung by the same woman that sings the Spanish at the beginning of reincarnated. If you put them all together they might be like a poem of some type that gives more context to the whole album
@@SuperTankdempsey oh absolutely, that’s probably the biggest thing I wish I could’ve talked about in the video, but I was going so fast trying to get my thoughts out I didn’t add a section about those moments, if I go back to the record in the future I will definitely be talking about those passages more!
@@makingmediamatter thank you for responding! I enjoyed your video and would definitely watch you talk about this album more! I have been loving gnx so much! Def in my top 5 albums of the year! I think my favorite track rn is reincarnated but honestly it changes every listen
I feel like he’s gonna drop another album because he never puts the heart songs on the intended album (part 5 was put on MM a few weeks after release). Not to mention the snippet from the teaser not being on the album and there being 2 cars in the teaser
Love the knowledge and respect you have on hip hop 🙂↕️ thank you for your thoughts on this album. It makes me so happy that you also have the Spaceships line stuck in your head. I think it’s too underrated when people talk about the best parts of the album
Great content examination little sister! Excellent job, and I love your presentation and break down of Kendrick's lyrical meaning and execution! It's inspiring to see the younger generation receive his positive messages. ❤🙏🏾💘🔥🙏🙌🏾🤲🏾💓❤️🔥
This whole album feels like kendrick making an excuse to get busy and utilize the moment to create something that reflects his life at the moment. A public diary that all his collaborators can use to help build up the west coast artists he put on. And it's also display of his faith in God, his endless passion to fight for what he thinks is right and to pay tribute to hiphop and the ability he was blessed with and nurtured. Furthermore, it always stays personal and close to his heart so he has to always look within himself and recognize his flaws when they appear to him as well as embrace them to his own benefit.
Going back and forth with Kendrick and Eminem's albums just has me like, Man, I wish they dropped some songs together. I don't know what the theme and vibes would be like, but I just want it to happen in general. Two goated artists on a song together can't go wrong with that. maybe😅😵💫
I got a ton of shit on r*ddit because I said tv off was one of the weaker tracks on the album. I love the song but it's one of the most basic "give em what they ask for" tracks. It goes hard like any Kendrick track and I'd say it's like an 8/10 but the rest of the album is just so great I don't think it stands up to everything around it.
I waited for Squabble up for so long, ever since the snippet because it’s clearly a hyphy beat. And at the drop of the sample there’s a subliminal idea that most people don’t notice is that he’s talking about pit bulls massive hit “Fuego” where he says “you think you gangster, don’t cross the line.” Once again mixing Spanish hip hop culture with original 70s black funk
Glad you mentioned the lower case, maybe he wanted the caps GNX to standout?? Not sure but he obviously done intentionally. My left field/reaching theory: KDot seen wearing his Oasis shirts in the studio and rumors about him linking up with the 90s “Gen X” band made headlines in UK. They have an all lower case font design. Pretty stupid after I just read what I wrote but yeah.
THE TIME HAS COME!!!!!!!! Been waiting for your breakdown since the prophet Kendrick spoke his word on that bright and early morning🙏🏾 I'm gonna say the same thing I mentioned on the Grits & Eggs Podcast: Kendrick wasn't the one asking us about being conflicted after all LOL He said he got a spirit within him............Drake woke up Anubis/Anansi/Ogun & had this man speaking on behalf of Lucy himself all in the song reincarnated. "I rewrote the devil's story just to take our power back, reincarnated." P.S: we're seeing the record Euphoria happen in real-time with the fact that Drake is now Suing UMG and Spotify. Go back and listen to that and his verse on the /America Has a Problem remix/.
I mentioned that at the end of the video a bit, but I feel like every time someone has tried to sell me on any type of “second album” theory it hasn’t come true😭
After being spoiled by media personalities like The Company Man, Rob Markman, Curtiss King, and even Professor Skye…I really struggled to get through this video. I assumed that it would be somewhat uninformed, but wanted to prove myself wrong. But after watching, it felt very detached from the actual art and HEART of this album. So much of this album was meant to connect with the heart, and this review totally missed that. It’s very intellectual (and inaccurate in some instances), and is clearly from the perspective of a person who is not connected to the culture. I love that so many people are engaging in hip hop, but I wish, at the very least, more research was done before this review.

@makingmediamatter he does this a lot: Poetic Justice, for example, and in pieces of his verse on Look Over Your Shoulder (the Busta Rhymes song)
