Thanks for starting with the clean tone comparison first then progressing to crunch. This is how the comparison demos should be presented. I would like to hear every note and feel the music in a comparison video. It bugs me when some demos start with lots of talk, then followed by high distortion sound and fast playing - that buzz just masks everything related to the true tone. Very good job!!!
I have had both units. I got the podhd500 mostly because i had seen sooo many rigs with that unit, and it was about 75.00 cheaper than the Boss. I loved the sound the punch the whole thing from a distance. When I purchased it I found what the difference between myself and a label backed guitarist. They can afford a guitar tech that can tweek out the sound. I honestly could barely get past the on switch. I took the unit back, sprung for the difference and brought the Boss home. Boss had a great tone, no surprise. It had great patches, again no surprise. It had EZ edit features and dual screens which made programming smooth. If you have owned POD you may have better luck than I. If you want bang for the buck and ease of use, make it BOSS
Djeeze, did you plug into this demo to get an impression of sound options/capabilities or to earbrush your absolute tonal hearing ? (Ps! If you're also offended in any way by my spelling skills - I'm norwegian...)
I own the HD500 and love it. The tone differences are subtle. I think both have their strength and weaknesses, I don't have any first hand experience with the GT but it sounds good also. I think it would be like splitting hairs choosing one over the other
It's like old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" . I have the boss GT10, POD HD 500, and the GT100. All of them had the ability to produce all the effects from high gain, clean, crunch and warmer tones. It all depends on how you set up your amps and your kit. Thus by far the best comparison of the 2 powerhouse but none are better than each other. For versatility and user friendly, I'd choose the GT100.... Thanks for posting...
Do you find the pod HD has latency in patch changing. I had both at the same Time. I couldn't get pass that any got rid of the pod. Global tap tempo was awesome somthing boss never had.
After owning both line 6 and boss multi effect units I've come to this conclusion. Line 6 has better preamps by far but don't sound well with an amp. Great direct recording. Boss are way better to use with an amp you like and use the overdrive and distortion models to find your sound. Both are great products depending on what you are using them for.
Line6 and amps without fx-loop are a no go! Therefore you are correct. However when connected on an fx-loop they can do wonders. Therefore you need less money to create a very good tone, but if you want to reach something personal and more fulfilling you have to go for the Boss.
Boss has great effects..but i would like a standalone unit and the pod is pretty much built for that....infact it first came out as a studio unit...really I like the crunch and cleans on the gt but when the pod hd is played you can hear the tone as you want a great warm modeler to sound..deep, real and satisfying
I have been a user of "boss" products in the last 10 years, I used their processors with a JC 120 amp to get the optimal tone of all the stereo effects. I recently had problems with my processor and I bought a Line 6 HD500. The structure is fragile and it looks like a toy, hesitate one second on the store ) but......Now I know "boss" made me lose many hours of life looking for what does not have..True amps and pedals tones. Line 6 HD 500 is too much better than boss. Easy to understand, and the dirty tones are awesome.
How does it look like a toy? Looks almost identical to the BOSS product. By the way, great story. BOSS is a company that's pushing obsolete technology only because people trusted them for so long, so they think people will be willing to still shell out ridiculous amounts of money for products that would have been "mindblowing" 2 decades ago at best. They really need to stop with the COSM stuff and just overhaul their stuff. That's why Line 6 is on top of the game, because they knew they could do better with today's technology, so they overhauled their modeling technology.
duke gdl Ah, that's kinda lame, I thought they replaced it with metal when they went from the old PODs to the HD series. I'd still get a regular HD500 though because the new HD500 doesn't work with old Variax workbench. Either way, I'm sure it holds up well enough despite not being pure metal. I just can't really respect BOSS anymore. They discontinue all their good pedals and keep pushing crap pedals that sound awful. Their effects are good, but the distortions are pretty meh. I don't want to pay 100 bucks for 1 effect each either anyways or spend 500 on a bunch of mediocre sounds on their multi FX boards.
IMHO for my ear : - Boss GT - 100 - Good cleans / crunch and warmer high gains ( not tooo over the top) POD HD 500x - with the boost and the delay somehow the pod wins over the Boss....but there seems to be some kind of reverb based noise in the high gains for the pod.....and seems to me you enjoy playing on the POD more than the Boss........
I think the HD500 sounded pretty killer in the clean demo, but the crunch and high gain parts sounded like the input was set incorrectly and was clipping. Turn your input gain down! That crackling is the input clipping, NOT the pedal! My HD500x will be here Tuesday. I will be making some comparison (HD500x vs Positive Grid BIAS Desktop) and demo videos when I get my 500x next week. I got the 500x to replace BIAS as the BIAS software itself didn't work for shit. I made a video on it already, check it out and stay tuned!
Boss is very plesant to my ear but in the other hand Pod has studio quality like remastered sound ready to recording. Both sound pretty awsome for me. If I have to pick only one I will go with GT100 because of durable switches and easy interface which is essential on gigs, despite its amp modeling isn't so spectacular like on the PodHD.
Pod HD is a bit more expensive than GT100, and as you say, the podHD doesnt seem as solid as the Boss pedalboards. those pedals look like little plastics and very easy to break. Probably that was what kept me away from PodHD, but it is some sort of prejudice because I dont really know, I never had a line 6.
GT-!00 for me. Played both and through the FX Loop on an amp, no contest. And I know that this might not be possible for all but remember guys this is effectively a preamp, therefore the best tone results will be achieved(again where possible, for those with an amp with an FX Loop in the rear) via the three or four cable method. This way you're bypassing the Preamp stage in your amplifier and only utilizing the power amp section, simply put it's the cleanest Ac route for your guitar without jamming extra unwanted frequencies on top of one another.
One important note when comparing these two pedals. The HD500X has about 6 seconds more of loop recording time, plus there is free software for the HD500X unit. Boss does not have any software so tweaks all have to be done directly on the pedal.
The saddest part about this Demo, is not just the badly tuned guitar, but the fact the person did NOT even properly set-up the GT100. For those who own one, you'd know the Output options will significantly change the spatial and eq settings of the Output sound. Thus, what sounds "digital" in one setting -PA, SEND/RETURN can sound organic through an Combo Amp, Stack, module. Also, the Pre Amp sections do wonders for your sound: they create a different sonic palette depending on WHICH amp module you use.... So, this Demo becomes unfair to not just the products demonstrated, but to also the potential buyer, who doesn't get to hear What They Can Actually do when set-up right....which is NOT a task.
Anyone who says the line 6 isn't good live is delirious....I managed a band that covered Pantera and Metallica...the guitarist was playing a dime bag darrel signature guitar and using one of the original little pods...going straight to the sound board and started leaving his marshals home...He couldn't believe how great it sounded...so my guess is that this new line 6 POD has to be even better plus you can tweak it while in your DAW then take it too your gig...not to mention the looper is a huge plus..glad to see the Boss has one as well...I see every body hating on the effects but yet I seldom see guitarists without their little stomp boxes on stage...this surely is much better than daisy chaining a bunch of 9V stomp boxes together and it has 100 of them!!!!Not to mention every out put and input known to man lol If you're worried about not using an amp...hook it to your favorite amp!
Metallion 1,968 Well yes according to you, but it's subjective and I'm sure there are plenty of people who would agree with my thoughts. But you're obviously the grand arbiter of tone, so who am I to argue?
+mutley365 It's all good I think is a matter of taste, it may be that the distortion that hd is too bright and the gt is smoother, I hear it that way, and that doesn't mean one is better than the other, I like the sound boss has, to me it sounds warm, for others it could be more digital.
Thanks for the HD patches. Never tried the GT-100 but never had to. The HD500 everything beyond what I need and have been using for 3 years. I love it's flexibility live, even direct through a PA if needed and it's a dream in the studio. Tones you can go back and forth on, but the hardware features, connection options on the HD500 far outweigh the GT-100. You have to look at the entire package as a whole. Rock solid and road worthy ( It has way more than 9 lives with my lack of finesse of hauling gear around!)
Its just the presets nothing to worry about. Keep in mind you can still edit some patches to make them sound like the same. But for me Boss is way to good. HD so digital~
Bull. Boss is the fakest sounding garbage I have ever heard. All of their distortions and amp models are lifeless with no warmth to them. HD is the most realistic sounding floorboard amp modeler out on the market today.
bobthe771 I really don't get it, the POD is extremely warm sounding compared to the BOSS. I get it if you have a preference but the POD is definitely warmer.
I just bought a GT 100 used in brand new condition for $250 bucks I just can't leave this thing Aone I love it. I am getting ready to use it this Saturday live I can't wait .i was ready to throw it out the window until I found the set up demos on u tube it took me about a good week to start figuring out how to use it now I am starting to tweek this GT 100 out the way I like it. It's just a matter of paying attention to the demos they teach you step by step how to set it up. apposed to reading the owner's manual. I chose the GT 100 it's just what I was looking for all these years of of my music journey. Patrick Romero Denver Colo thanks for the great video.
C'mon guys... In some country there is no food for eat, and Those people just play on old bodged transistor radios on a shit overused chinesse guitars... With lot of fun and smile. Is it matter on that pro price level wich one is better? Judging instead of play and have fun? Guys! Just go and play it and buy what Your hearth is say You to buy it. in both of this companies a lot of engineers and workers did great job for You. And don't forget... Everything is sound good if You know how to play as good with fun! Peace!
Yeah, it matters. If i am going to spend that money on something, i'd like to get the best i can. Especially because there's a lot of people for whom money is an issue, i don't want to throw money around without being informed.
***** Just because they can doesn't mean they have to or even that they want to. At the end of the day, music is about expressing yourself. The more tools you have at your disposal, the better you can express yourself.
Well in this example I would take the GT hands down. But it seemed to me that part of it may have been in the EQ of each. Plus I have read many comments that the HD shines when it comes to the amp sims which we did not hear. For premade GT patches I would go to Boss Tone Central & download some great ones there. I think if Line 6 made an all amp pedal I might go for it & save about 1500 / not buying an Axe FX or a Kemper.
I play live every weekend with the HD500. Can't be beat for the price. I play it line in to a Tech21 PE-60 and mic to mixer cuz I like the 12" celestion. This is the ultimate live gig rig. Small and simple.
Metal --> HD500/HD500X Rock/Clean --> GT100 Both can do a great job playing everything you throw at them, but the HD500 is a bit better for metal/distorted sounds. Another thing to note (and it kind of pisses me off about BOSS) is the fact that GT100 is still using COSM as a modeling engine, which is a bit outdated
HD500 is noticeably clearer on everything. It is harder to navigate, but that's because it has so many options for sound tweaking. It took me some time, but after playing with it, I've dialed in a fantastic live sound. Learning to dial in a good recording sound is something I still struggle with.
The GT100 sounded more compressed and the audio wasn't clipping for it... The HD500 had audio that clipped because the input was too high for the mix, or the output was too high, and i'm not saying I could record better audio... the crap on my channel is proof of that... either way, I'd still choose the HD500 because it sounded more... organic? Great playing in the video, and I'm sure your recording is much better than here because it is 2016 after all and this video is 3 years old. :)
That's because BOSS rides on outdated technology because of how iconic they were back then. Back then they were innovative, now, they're just recycling old technology. Even Line 6 knows when to utilize new technology and techniques, it's why the POD HD replaced the POD XT and 2.0. Guitar modeling was improving drasticly both hardware and software these past few years.
Very nice comparison bRo ^^ Im a great fan of the Gt100 (which is my main unit 4 years) but i must admit that the Pod HD is more realistic/detailed in High-Gain with more harmonic content ...sound really awesome... these R pretty cheap nowadays !!!
Try again now that you have more experience with the Boss. Your POD was set up better than the Boss because you had it longer and fine tuned your setting. You can get the warm and expanded tones and effects from the Boss. See pro demo from Alex Hutchings and Roland here on UA-cam for better examples of the Boss GT100, ME 80 and ME25.
ladys, stop fighting. i have both of them. Boss-100 sounds better as you listen here, but better in a digital way.because it sounds more digital, great tone, better than HD 500 for Recording. HD 500 sounds more warm ,more organic .less digital. worst for Recording, but better for PA,monitors or 4 method cable sound. so you guys need to realise what sounds good for you. same bands want sound more clear, louder effects and that is digital.then go for GT.100. if you want the sound to sound more like a valve amp with less defenition and warmer sound, then the HD 500. boss more easy to use on itself, and HD 500 more easy to use with the interface on the PC, both great and they can do dual amps what i think sounds great having 2 different amps in one go. or use the volum pedal to change from one to other one. HD 500 have more meatl amps with pre amp or normal amp, and boss more effects, hd 500 have great reverbs dated all century, boss more of the new staff. boss have 5150 ,hd have soldanos. both they great, i use hd 500 for live and boss for recording. for an album i like to record with hd 500 and top up the lead with the boss. so its up to you guys.
So basically, since the BOSS sounds more digital, we should all stop using real amplifiers? Your sentence makes more sense. If the Line6 sounds more realistic, then we should be using that. I think what you're trying to say is that the Line 6 can be muddy, and it can. The BOSS has more distinct mids that'll cut through a mix, but it sounds less realistic. EQ is your friend.
Utk foot switch sy lebih suka produk Boss, tp sayang edisi GT distorsi-nya terlalu smooth. Dan utk POD HD500 it's bite... mantap. tp kurang suka foot switch model unyu-unyu gitu hahaha...nice review, bro
buenas amigos. soy proncipiantr en el boss gt 100 mi pregunta es . como puedo configurar el efecto booster con delay que se escucha en 0:20 en adelante. hasta el sonido del pod es lindo. gracias por ayudar.
I own POD HD500.Sound is amazing. Not right from the box but I learnd a lot about tweaking and now I spend less time to get right sound.Boss sound more digital to me and with Pod i realy can feel bit of real amp when I play!
I have an old Boss gt8, and is freakin hard to find a natural sound... Too many time spent rolling the knobs and pushing buttons to try to get out something similar to a guitar tone... Too frizzy or too buzzy, and i'm tired! XD Just using always the same patch for everything... XD I think my next step will be a POD...
Tips on GT-8; Natural overdrive is amazing for rhythm, Blues Driver on top gain for solo with an eq enhancing the bass. Sounds great!!!! We don't need actually 1 billion effects but find those that fit the occasion. These presets are great in amps equipped with Celestion Speakers. In this case, I tested them in the Celestion g12T75.
I think the GT-100 sounds more like an amp; the HD500 sounds like a stomp box. Also there seems to be more compression and nasal quality to the POD than the Boss. Boss just overall sounds clearer to me. Having said that, I love your playing. Nice phrasing.
Gt-100 super easy to get a great tone from, I fought with the hd500 for about 2years before I just gave up and sold it, there were just to many inconsistencies. I have since bought an 11 rack best purchase I've ever made.
Wow, I've been checking out the Avid Eleven Rack and it looks/sounds insane. I gotta get one - no, I WILL get one! I have one question that might sound silly though. Can you hook up a wah pedal through this rack? That's the only thing I think may be missing...
It's weird how this stuff sounds close, but there's something missing to me. I can't tell if I'm imagining it until I listen to my Wampler distortion pedal, and modern tube amp. Could be the recording.
Долго думал,слушал,выбирал и взял BOSS gt100,как по мне,так на чистых POD чище звучит,а вот на перегрузе BOSS однозначно намного сочнее и четче,взял BOSS,очень доволен.))
Wow! Juicy sounds! And fantastic playing!! Can you share your preset? I want to see if it sound the same with my guitar and in the pod hd500 fx loop with a tube amp! Thank you!
I've recently purchased the gt-100. I'm finding it to be very noisy and it colours the tone a bit. Dampens it, makes it a bit fizzy sounding. Think I might have to take it back and upgrade to the line 6. Thanks for the video. It's been very helpful.
It didn't. I had to change my gain staging which has yielded a better tone overall. Quite happy now but I think this is still an area that could use improvement as I never had problems with my zoom g3x or digitech rp250.
I have both units at the moment trying to decide which to keep. Anyone know if it is possible to setup a global tap tempo in the GT 100? Pod HD has it and I love it. But...... Gt100 has instant patch changing pod HD has a delay when changing patches. Any way to edit that???

how about tuning the guitar :)
MrMakas i guess both tuners on these pedals in not accurate hahah

Yes I agree, Im use GT-10 with Marshall DSL 40c pluged on 4 cable method and I thing that all tones I get depends on the settings on GT-10 and my amp

Your tone brought a smile to my face. There's hope for these floor-based, non-Fractal, cheap effects processors yet!

great tones! the crunch/boost one from the GT-100 killed me.

It would have been better if you had immediately compared the different sounds. Having said that the line 6 sounds smoother and warmer.
I was set on getting the GT-100, but I think I just changed my mind and I now agree with your assessment!
+Continental Aquatics It's the other way around, the GT100 sounds warmer and the HD500 sounds treblier and anoying, again that's your choice bro.
+Metallion 1,968 Tone is subjective like you say.
I agree,,
Fernando Monreal The Boss is hella fizzy compared to the HD500 as well.
I get it if you have a preference but the POD is definitely warmer.
bobthe771 You can easily EQ that out. An amp will naturally sound a bit trebley, there's always post EQing when it comes to guitar tones.
How about crunch and distortion sounds? Are they OK?
Thank you, Gandhi!
***** Just because they can doesn't mean they have to or even that they want to. At the end of the day, music is about expressing yourself. The more tools you have at your disposal, the better you can express yourself.
A. Wagner And again, just because you can, doesn't mean you should or even that you want to.
A. Wagner That is nowhere near what I said.
Man, he plays great!! Hats off to you!! Subscribed
I play live every weekend with the HD500. Can't be beat for the price. I play it line in to a Tech21 PE-60 and mic to mixer cuz I like the 12" celestion. This is the ultimate live gig rig. Small and simple.
Shawn Gierling Not big on the HD but the PE's are really something.
The Boss sounds like better for concerts!! Has that good feel of concert.. And the hd500 sounds more like better for studio! That's my opinion!
Really? Which one is more easy to use???
very good comparison brow, i can feel that both in optimum settings and it's really helpful for me to choose. nice brow thanks for upload
Metal --> HD500/HD500X
Rock/Clean --> GT100
Both can do a great job playing everything you throw at them, but the HD500 is a bit better for metal/distorted sounds. Another thing to note (and it kind of pisses me off about BOSS) is the fact that GT100 is still using COSM as a modeling engine, which is a bit outdated
nope you false always line 6 better than boss Gt thing
HD500 is noticeably clearer on everything. It is harder to navigate, but that's because it has so many options for sound tweaking. It took me some time, but after playing with it, I've dialed in a fantastic live sound. Learning to dial in a good recording sound is something I still struggle with.
i also agree with you, it's pretty difficult to choose which one. but for now, i picked HD500, because i already get used to it. thank you
The GT100 sounded more compressed and the audio wasn't clipping for it... :)
I don't care what sounds more accurate. Only interested in what's enjoyable to listen to. The Boss wins.
HD500 is way better.. its sound is more natural , the GT100 seems to be out of the 80's with a too synthetic sound
Guitar&Jam true!!! The GT 100 may have somewhat more sounds but they're too digital sounding
They probably using the same modeling they did in 1998, so yeah
hd synthetic too
With this guy's chops and technique, I'm pretty sure he could make my toaster sound good!:) Great stuff!
Wes
Some sounds are clipping on the hd. You should've turned the unit down a little more before recording. Thanx for the video though!
I like the amp emulators in the HD more, but that boss isn't too shabby. It's just a bit on the synthetic side for me. I liked the video. Thanx again!
Very nice comparison bRo ^^
Im a great fan of the Gt100 (which is my main unit 4 years) but i must admit that the Pod HD is more realistic/detailed in High-Gain with more harmonic content ...sound really awesome... these R pretty cheap nowadays !!!
Nice demo. Thanks for your hard work.
ladys, stop fighting. i have both of them.
HD 500 have more meatl amps with pre amp or normal amp, and boss more effects, hd 500 have great reverbs dated all century, boss more of the new staff. boss have 5150 ,hd have soldanos. both they great, i use hd 500 for live and boss for recording. for an album i like to record with hd 500 and top up the lead with the boss. so its up to you guys.
what?
what, what
What what what
what
So basically, since the BOSS sounds more digital, we should all stop using real amplifiers?
Your sentence makes more sense. If the Line6 sounds more realistic, then we should be using that.
I think what you're trying to say is that the Line 6 can be muddy, and it can. The BOSS has more distinct mids that'll cut through a mix, but it sounds less realistic.
EQ is your friend.
i think it's a matter of taste.i think both of them sounds good. i would love to have one of them :D
Iove the patches, can you post the on line 6 and give us the link, the one above doesnt work
Utk foot switch sy lebih suka produk Boss, tp sayang edisi GT distorsi-nya terlalu smooth. Dan utk POD HD500 it's bite... mantap. tp kurang suka foot switch model unyu-unyu gitu hahaha...nice review, bro
Devia ao menos ter nivelado o volume no master. A pod Hd claramente tá com mais volume que a Gt-100.
Can you break down the mixing of the Gt100 all of the tone from clean-crunch-hi gain with booster and delay thanks
I think the POD Sounds to Digital... the Boss Sound is More Nutral...in my opinion.
Great riffs! Nice playing, dude!
line six all the way.. boss gt100 sounds like the old gt series. business..
oh man i love the high gain, booster and delay on the hd500, perfect sound for me, it's brighter than the boss gt-100
Nanya bro, POD HD 500 bisa dijadiin soundcard utk rekaman gak? Kemaren gw punya XT live bisa gw pake sound card buat rekaman soalnya. thx
great video....thanks for taking the time to do it.
The pod is better sounding hands down.
I think the GT-100 sounds more like an amp; the HD500 sounds like a stomp box. Also there seems to be more compression and nasal quality to the POD than the Boss. Boss just overall sounds clearer to me. Having said that, I love your playing. Nice phrasing.
My ears must be stuck in the 90's or something. I prefer the sound of the GT-10.
Nice patch! Can you share the patch for the HD500? Thank you.
That g is sharp as he'll
Wow first, I want to say nice playing mate. I have the boss gt 100 but I love boss gear. I think they are both great mfx pedals. W
That's the only thing I think may be missing...
of course you can !
GT100, I wasn't expecting it to sound better than the POD but for me it did..
Like POD HD500 it'Perfect
And for some odd reason i can't put my finger on;the Boss Gt-100 did sound better to me over all? Thanks for the demo.
tuning int the first song...ouch
It's weird how this stuff sounds close, but there's something missing to me. I can't tell if I'm imagining it until I listen to my Wampler distortion pedal, and modern tube amp. Could be the recording.
and also, perhaps tune the guitar, ya got two tuners there in front of you.
i prefer the nike socks :D
Both has unique sounds but as i am a lead player i would definitely go for line 6
HD 500 Perfect
Hi can i ask some patches for the clean tone and crunch boost of GT100 sounds nice
HD500 is better for me.
After years listening and playing with a cheap, for what it offers, pod go makes these effects really odsolete and erelevant.
please next time.. tune your guitar!
true!!
Yeahh
Bullshit!
Bullshit
Wow! Juicy sounds! And fantastic playing!! Can you share your preset? I want to see if it sound the same with my guitar and in the pod hd500 fx loop with a tube amp! Thank you!
Thanks a lot for those patches !! :)
BOSS GT-100!
You're joking.
I've recently purchased the gt-100. I'm finding it to be very noisy and it colours the tone a bit. Dampens it, makes it a bit fizzy sounding. Think I might have to take it back and upgrade to the line 6. Thanks for the video. It's been very helpful.
Noise gate solve this.
It didn't. I had to change my gain staging which has yielded a better tone overall. Quite happy now but I think this is still an area that could use improvement as I never had problems with my zoom g3x or digitech rp250.
Check you are using the right output mode. My boss sounded terrible till I worked that out. Like night and day
if you come from a biased viewpoint you never open your mind. HD 500 is far more flexible.
boss has a clean delivery..thats the most important thing when you play on the stage..boss creates tone perfectly. peace out
to me line6 hd500
The Digitech RP1000 beats the hell out of both of these:)
Александр Питерский I have both:)
+batmandeltaforce can I have one?
I have both units at the moment trying to decide which to keep.
Anyone know if it is possible to setup a global tap tempo in the GT 100? Pod HD has it and I love it. But......
Gt100 has instant patch changing pod HD has a delay when changing patches. Any way to edit that???
Jack thammarat
Доброго времени суток! Вы не могли бы поделиться настройками что на видео, именно нужно по HD 500!?Очень понравился звук. Спасибо заранее!
